  • This video will explain what is happening to your clutch control and gas control when moving off. Most learner drivers will struggle with moving off with stalling the learner car at some point. Even after you have passed your driving test and you get your first car, you might even struggle to move off and keep stalling your car.
This video will help to explain what is happening to your feet and what you should be doing with the gas and clutch control to move off without stalling your car.

I learned clutch then add gas when moving off. Its so frustrating I was taught the wrong way, I've just had to adapt in my new car. Nearly been driving 6 months and rarely stall now. This video is very helpful thank you 😊

It’s really frustrating when you’ve learnt in your instructors car and they teach you to only use the clutch to move off. Now I’m here dreading driving in my first car as I’ll have to learn this from the beginning. What was the point :( thanks for the video will watch it again

I understand your frustration, some instructors are not making it easy for some learners. Good luck driving your first car.

I had the same thing, although, I learnt with my father as opposed to my instructor. But generally, I would also move off with only the clutch, once I passed, I switched to a petrol. It wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be, unfortunate that you were taught that way though.

I had the exact same thing taught to me. Failed straight away my driving test! The examiner said I didn't have enough control of the car. I explained that my driving instructor taught me to just use my clutch, even on hill starts. My examiner was really nice though even though I failed my examiner took the time to teach me how to bring the clutch to the biting point and add a bit of throttle during the exam. My examiner advised me to find another instructor and do more lessons with the new one then book again!

Oh no, this is now my instructor has been teaching me. I’m on my 7th driving lesson today. Do you think I should bring it up ?

Ask your instructor to explain the advantages of using gas first and ask your instructor if they should be showing you this way. If they try to push it under the carpet, then they know that they should be showing you.

Don't know if I'm just getting away with this on hill starts but I find in my 2011 fiesta, I can lift the clutch just enough to hold the car, then release the footbrake, add gas, lift the clutch a touch more and move away.

If you are coping and not rolling or stalling, then good for you. You must have an excellent control of the clutch.

Hi there, yesterday as I was driving, was waiting to make a right turn at a set of lights and as I moved off the line to get into 2nd.. I accidentally grinded that gear and over-revved the engine a bit. Would that be something to worry about? I heard that grinding your gears can do big damage to the car.
    Thank you.

If you are constantly doing that it would damage the gears. But if it happens every now and again then you should be ok.
