ベンチーニ・コロール 24 Sはイタリアのミラノで1953年に生まれたカメラです。ベンチーニは戦前からカメラを製作販売していました。カメラは主にボックスカメラやフォールディングカメラでした。第二次世界大戦のときはカメラ製造を中止していて、飛行機の部品の製造をしていたようです。戦後すぐ(1946年)にカメラ製作と販売を再開しました。それらのカメラはご紹介のカメラのように一見して戦前・戦中のカメラの様ではなく、モダンなデザインが際立っています。カメラ本体はアルミの一体成型で表面は鏡面のような仕上げとなっています。カメラのデザインとしては後期のアールデコ、あるいはモダンなデザインといえます。このアルミの一体成型で鏡面仕上げというデザインは際立って楽しい雰囲気を醸し出しています。他に例を見ない形態といえます。確かに、機能中心のモダンデザインといえるものの、なにか鉄腕アトムに出てきそうなＳＦアート的な雰囲気があります。私はこれをSFモダン(Science Fictional Modern)と呼びたいです。イタリアのミラノでカメラを製造していたベンチーニは何か1500年前後のルネッサンス時代の革新性を身に着けていたのでしょうか。ミラノはフィレンツェやベネチアとともにルネッサンスの中心であったし、現代においてもイタリア・デザインの中心地であるわけですから。彼のデザインと思われる戦前のボックスカメラROBYは従来の箱型から、カメラの正面と背後のフイルム面を曲面で作り、その性能は不明ですが、他に類を見ない革新的なデザイン性を感じます。
