  • 'Bjærg' is a piece deliberately dealing with the different traits of a proposed 'Nordic Tone' in music, especially as put forward in the book 'The Nature of Nordic Music', edited by Tim Howell (www.routledge.com/The-Nature-....
The title is Danish and means two things - on the one hand, it simply means 'mountain' - a noun - but on the other, it also means '(to) salvage' - an imperative verb. The point here is that the piece is dealing with and depicting both concrete Nordic elements from nature AND less concrete atmospheres and/or emotional states of mind(s) in the Nordic countries, which is often associated with melancholy and darkness.
As performed by Jesper Nordin and The Symphony Orchestra of The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, on October 17, 2021.
