What Did We Stumble Across? - Strange Old Coins Found Metal Detecting a 300 Year Old Farm!

  • We find some of our oldest things metal detecting old colonial farm fields because the land has been pretty much undisturbed for centuries. Back then all farming was done by hand so people were working in these fields constantly, and will all that activity they can't help but dropping and loosing things. This year several farmers in our area didn't harvest until the week of Christmas so we've been patiently waiting and watching. Finally several open up and the first one we chose to go to is this field that surrounds a 1740's house and from what we hear the fields have never been detected before. The one caveat though, it was planted with corn which makes detecting pretty difficult. We made the best of it though and along the way pulled several really old coins from the ground, including 2 that were not only crazy old, but also really strange, with none of us ever even seeing either of them before! What a cool mysterious site trying to figure out that type of people must have passed through here all that time ago. An awesome way start the farm season in the new year!

Farmers are starting to learn that there are better options than leaving the corn stalks standing. There are a few combine attachments AKA Stalk Stompers that knock the stalks off at ground level. This helps with decomposition of the stalks and cuts down on tire damage. In the future I think you will see more farmers using them. Lets hope so!

I prefer to leave the stalks standing, especially for no-till farming. Chopping the stalks creates a thick matt of stalk material that prevents the ground from warming in the spring.

Belgian Leopold cents and German Stubers are familiar finds where I live (The Netherlands, not far from German border). Would be interesting to know how they ended up across the pond. Maybe the farmhouse was inhabited by Belgian/German immigrants back in the days? I enjoyed this episode.👍

Kind of like detecting parallel, along side a concrete sidewalk. That’s where the 6 inch coil would have been ideal. I have the Legend pro pack and I’m happy with it. Happy Hunts. _/ 👍

Hey Jason and all the fellow detectors who watch his channel. I just bought my first home in the country on 5 acres in NY. The house itself was built in 1988 but almost two halves of it is bordered by very impressive stone walls that date back probably 200 years. Upon exploring today I found a circular stone well that also dates back probably 200 years. I took my dads $60 cheap detector around the property and found a square actually close to the house, semi raised up, with hundreds of signals just below the surface. Original 1800’s house or barn on the property filled in years ago??? Regardless this “toy” detector only reads small signals at the most 3 inches. I know 1800’s gems can be 5-8 inches or more. Any suggestions on an easy to use detector around the $500 range? I will eventually email Jason but I’d like to hear from his viewers too.

A great first detector is the Garret AT Pro. It’s a rugged, super versatile detector that is waterproof up to 10 feet. Salt water detecting can be done but it’s definitely it’s weak spot. I have many detectors, that cost 2 to 3 times more than the AT Pro and I still use my AT Pro fairly regularly.
