Major issue most African American Women don't want to address is your first point *"Unbalanced/unhealthy diet "* .Any issues with skin start from inside out, mainly the gut. We're so quick to spend money on external products or vitamins to ingest yet we *FAIL* to invest and put more emphasis on our *health* which is a long term investment not just for hair but our lives! Despite how much we do to fix the scalp externally, you can't avoid internal health being the dominant factor.
Yes!! This is 1000% factual.
you are sooo right sister
Vitamins to ingest is an easier way to get nutrients though. For example We would have to eat a lot of oranges to get the most effective recommended dose of vitamin c.
@@solarlola5953 if we weren't eating the SAD diet(ie Standard American Diet) high in processed foods... and primarily eating WHOLE foods we wouldn't have to deal with Vitamin C or any vitamin issues as much... keep in mind it wasn't until after the introduction of processed foods did we see a need to even focus on the vitamin topic. How our ancestors thrive without all the extra junk we put in our body is something to make note of. I'm apart of a few health groups that have healed many health conditions an no longer need to be concerned about Vitamin issues (according to our physicians and how we feel) such as Vitamin C because our bodies no longer need extra supplementation. Sorry, tried to keep this short so if you want references and some reliable sources to learn more about these topics let me know I'dbe happy to share!! Take care!đ

I just went back to greasing my scalp after 10 years of not doing it. My scalp was dry and itchy. I kept my hair tucked away because it wasn't growing and broke off badly. I went back to water and grease hair is thick and growing. Mostly it's moisturized with normal shedding now. Grease can't be all bad because think about it before all these oils and experts we only had grease and hair was healthy and thriving. I say do what you deem best for your own hair and happiness.
I use grease and water too and my hair loves it. You gotta know how to use it.
Agreed
I have a similar story where i also stopped using grease 10 years ago because of youtube. I recently started using grease on my hair again and honey my hair retains length & moisture better, reduced split ends and breakage. Idk why I stopped. I dont put it on my scalp cause it will seep onto scalp anyway.
Same for me!
Do you use honey on your hair as a mask?
How do you even know what to do for your hair when we have so many qualified people saying two different things! It drives me crazy! Thank you for the inside look tho!
Trial and error to discover what your hair likes
@Jaime Smith - ... And lives in the same part of the world as you... ie The same climate.
Hair scientist say not to leave oil in the scalp.
My hair has grown the longest past waist length and itâs because I oil my scalp with correct oils and washout with water only everyday or every other day and clarifying natural shampoo every other week. Just take the pads of your fingers while in the shower with water only to help remove the excess and the oil . Steaming with oils is extremely beneficial. Luscious thick length is the results
What are the correct oils
Angel J. Red Palm, Argan, coconut, Avocado etc..low molecular weight and absorbs nicely
What do you mean steaming with oils? How do you do that
Thanks for your comment and for sharing your secret to long hair. Iâm sure lots of people will find it useful. Perhaps it also helps that you rinse your scalp regularly so any oil you do apply isnât there long enough to clog your follicles and aggravate the scalp.
Can I ask how you are certain that this is why your hair has grown so long. Perhaps its your other practices that have benefitted your hair. Or it could be your diet is excellent.
I do put oil on scalp but not grease. It makes a noticeable difference in how my hair feels and looks and it prevents my hair from itching. I find that without oil my scalp can sometime be TOO dry but I usually donât put much, I just put it on the tips of my fingers and massage my scalp.
Same! When I don't oil my scalp, it's start to get itchy
I stopped using hair grease while ago. I mainly used olive oil in my hair and my hair is healthier.
I grease my scalp. My mom always greased it wen we were lil girls n we still had Beautiful healthy hair. I luv grease
Same here, grease is my best friend and I have 354 micro locs. Oil does nothing for my scalp. To each his/her own â¤
Me too!
Plush Furr exactly
ME TOO!!!
Me too
I am Team Hair Grease for life! All the âkitchen oilsâ ran down my face and left my hair dry as a bale of hay by the end of the day. I just returned to hair grease TWO WEEKS ago and my hair is already on a higher level! I feel that growth is never stunted (unless you are on certain medications or have certain illnesses), but retention is. I will go out on a limb and say that people with hair types 3C to 4ZZ that use hair grease correctly (water, leave-in conditioner and hair grease) are not in the TWA phase for years (donât come for me). If your length retention has been stunted, get off of the anti-grease BULLOLOGY and get some long hair: Use SULFATE shampoo and seal your moisture in with hair grease. If you used hair grease, then you wouldnât need a sulfate-free shampoo because the hair grease is going to seal the moisture in for days. Take it to another level by using water, leave-in conditioner, oil moisturizer (such as BB or Lusterâs Pink Lotion) and seal with hair grease.
Right. Sulfate shampoos have saved my hair. People don't realize that even natural butters can build up on our hair and a lot of sulfate free shampoos can't clean it away properly so that's why after a few months people find that their favorite hair products "stop working". I use a clarifying sulfate shampoo with as less oils as possible and I noticed mt conditioners and styles work better and dont "stop working". I even used hair grease in my two sons 2a hair and it left their hair soft for days with me having to reapply.
Zoe ! If you are using the hair grease as a sealant, the hype around Blue Magic-in my opinion-is true. I have tried the Blue Magic in colors white, green and blue and the green is my favorite for sealing (I have thick strands and high density so if you have fine hair, adjust the amount so that you won't have it too heavy on your hair). I also use hair grease on my scalp because the kitchen oils kept running down my face-even after massaging them in! For my scalp, I use any "super grow" formula: Bronner Bros. (aka BB), Doogro, Africa's Best, et cetera. Hair grease is super cheap, so it is not a waste of funds to try it out and see if it works for you. If you use leave-in conditioner, you may want to replace the cream with a spray when you begin sealing with hair grease and DEFINITELY invest in clarifying shampoos for wash day. It won't matter that the natural oils are stripped because of the clarifying shampoo because that hair grease is going to seal in the water and leave-in conditioner for days!
@Zoe ! Yeha I agree with @buzzard eggs. I used the green Blue Magic as a kid and it worked very well. I also saw a video of an actual chemist who says you dont need a sulfate to wash out grease. There are sulfate free ones that do the job. Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo has an ingredient thats strong enough to wash out grease. I tried it and it worked wonders. All the grease was out of my hair and I didn't have to use a sulfate shampoo.
@@BuzzardEggs You know what you're talking about!
This is definitely the way to go! đđžđđžđđžđđž
I am a Trichologist, and I thank you for making this video. Just this afternoon I had this conversation with a friend. Excessively oiling the scalp can also exacerbate seborrheic dermatitis. Thanks again.
@Not about beauty hey that's the same career path I want to take. But I believe you can use hair grease on the hair or the scalp. It all depends on what your hair and scalp needs and how you maintain your hair. I was living proof of that for years in my younger days when I rocked relaxers. I grew my hair down to my hips, washed my hair weekly or bi weekly, greased my scalp and kept my hair wraped. Now that I'm natural I love my oils, but I'm experimenting with grease again to see if it's something I would consider going back to. When it comes to hair and scalp there is no one rule fits ALL because I know different people that achieve beautiful healthy hair using different products and methods
Meena Doby if you do take that path you will come to understand why it is not best practice to excessively oil the scalp. You note I say excessively some people can lightly oil their scalp however there are a great many people suffering from seborroheic dermatitis the oil feeds the condition leading them to have a very itchy and sore scalp. Furthermore, you may have been able to maintain a healthy head of hair all your life but that doesnât mean it was due to greasing your scalp. There are so many factors that play into the health. I have many patients who have stopped greasing the scalp and their hair has flourished. In short oils on your hair are beneficial but on the scalp I err on the side if caution.
Not About Beauty how often would you recommend âoilingâ your scalp?
@not about beauty you're right. Because back then I ate healthy & consumed a tone of water. Which may have had everything to do with my rapid hair growth.
Carlie Victor not at all if possible BUT if you notice it gets dry after washing add a light amount like literally what you rubs in your hand throughout.
I'm white with curly dry hair and I had start watching African hair videos then my hair started growing
Lisa Scales thatâs awesome sis! Iâm glad you hair is now growing đ
Lisa Scales interesting
Does she have African hair?
Not surprising. Curly hair tends to be dryer than other hair types since the sebum can't travel down the hair shaft as easy as straight hair.
azure kite it dont matter..she said she had curly hair.
I find that if I keep my scalp clean and I moisturize and oil my hair (not my scalp), my scalp will never be flaky or oily.
Connie Payne Thatâs exactly what I do. I have been on this natural hair journey for about 1 year and 1 month. My hair growth has been phenomenal. I wish more people thought like us because our scalp already produces its own oil
That's what I do too. Whenever I oil my scalp, it starts snowing in my head literally đ
At the end of the day, it's about what works for you. Oiling my scalp and my hair allows hair growth(22 inches straight).
what oils do you use? how often?
I don't use oils on my scalp, just on the length of my hair. I find that my scalp will get moisturized from this process. I used to oil my scalp and my scalp would end up flaky. Between discontinuing the use of petroleum based products (on my scalp) and washing and/or rinsing my scalp frequently, my scalp seems a lot healthier. I'll have to point people to this video if they ask what they can do to reduce flaking.
I suffered from dry scalp for my entire life from a baby through to adulthood until about 8 years ago when I started to put Jamaican Black Castor Oil on my scalp. Prior to this I always used grease on my scalp, such as the green Dax and I even tried the really light Dax organic oils which was the best prepared product I ever found for my hair. My hair was always moisturised, never dry, and my hair always grew quickly but my scalp was always dry and/or flaky. I also always retained good length.
After a few weeks of using JBCO the dry scalp stopped and has never returned. I thought the results might be temporary but it's completely permanent. My hair still grows at a similar rate but I retain even more length than before. So I'm all for oiling the scalp, maybe just avoid over oiling so as to avoid clogging follicles.
Yup! I stopped greasing my scalp when i first when natural and wondered why my hair was breaking off like no tomorrow. Started using jbc oil mixed with some peppermint oil and rosemary. My hair is flourishing way more in 2 months than the 3 years I have been natural. A little goes a long way with jbc oil however it works!
I grease and oil my scalp. I don't have an problem. My hair is mid back.!!
My scalp was itching every time even when I would just finished washing my hair. This is my first time using grease and it's better now! I grease my scalp and my hair and I have no problem.
I do not oil or grease my scalp. I have that book!đ I use Oyin Handmade's Juices to hydrate my scalp and move the sebum up the hair shaft. Since our hair is tightly coiled our sebum does not move up the hair, it stays on the scalp, so I help it with water and my hands. I have been natural for 8 years and this is the only method that works to prevent scalp build up for me. This is a great video because most people do not realize this!
I stopped putting anything in my scalp and wow what a difference. No immediate itching or irritation. My scalp feels great! I've been ever since leaving my scalp without any product applied directly to it. Loved the vid, loved how eloquently you spoke and ty for using actual science of our hair. đ Your hair looks lovely as always
Bronzedoll thanks for your comment! Iâm really pleased to hear how effective your own sebum is! Isnât it wonderful not to be walking round with a greasy scalp? When I first realised greasing/oiling my scalp was unnecessary I finally felt liberated. Amongst individuals like us, who donât have clinically dry scalps, the best thing to do is refrain from applying any products to the scalp and keep it clean. Wishing you all the best on the rest of your hair journey!đ
Grease molecules are too big to clog pores. Slaves greased their scalps and didn't have clogged pores. It's worked for black people for hundreds of years.
Grease doesn't work for everyone, but neither does oil or butter. A lot of us with afro-textured hair went back to hair grease and our hair has thrived. Oils and butters kept my hair at shoulder-length. Grease, blowdryers and shampoo have helped my hair reach waist-length. If grease (mineral oil) clogged pores, why doesn't baby oil (also mineral oil) clog pores all over the body?
+Heavenseventeen But it wasn't healthy. I think many black ppl get caught up with length, and appearance, then to actually take their health into account. My natural hair, doesn't like grease...well at least that particular brand of grease, but even when i wanted to give other greases a try, i couldn't bring myself to because of what grease is. I think my hair would thrive if i use grease, but i don't want to expose my body to any more crap than it's already exposed to, when there is a natural alternative. The natural alternative may not make my hair reach my back in a short amount of time like grease would, but hey, i'm willing to wait.
Black people have been getting relaxers for a long time too but it's not healthy for our hair either.
Also, slaves did not have healthy hair/scalp and suffered from many infections and diseases that left them with bald patches because they we unable to do thier hair.
People say hair grease is unhealthy but never seem to provide any proof. I used to believe it just because I read it on blogs and forums. No one ever provided actual studies or proof. Just word of mouth. Grease is petrolatum and mineral oil, which are fossil fuels in the ground. What's unhealthy about dead animals/fossils underground? Oils and butters come from the same ground, but people say they're healthy.
+Heavenseventeen If you look at the ingredients of most hair greases, "mineral oil" isn't the only ingredient, there's a whole slew of other ingredients, that have nothing to do with petrolatum and fossil fuels. I mean the proof is on the products container, and a quick google search and a trip to your local library can tell you that/provide you all the proof you need. Things from mother nature most of the time have more health benefits that outweigh the risk, and most of the time the only "risk" you have with what's natural is if you are allergic. Man made things get you to where you want to be faster, but is it really worth it when it comes to health? Is length really worth it? I'm all for doing what you want with your hair, but i hate how ppl act ignorant, and/or naive to things.
She said that it can clog your pores on the face and body by breakouts and bumps but on the scalp your hair is forced to grow through but can be blocked causing itchiness and poor hair growth quality
I stopped oiling/greasing when I first became natural, which was 5 years ago. I did do hot oil treatments once or twice a month during that time. As of the last 2/3 years I only use black Jamaican castor and jojoba oil, on my scalp when needed. I think it is helping my new growth not to be so dry and snap since Iâm paying more attention to my ends.
What a coincidence! I recently started experimenting with a different hair regimen that doesn't include the use of oils. It's too early to see results but I was noticing that regularly oiling my hair and scalp would result in a lot of itching or hair that was dry AND greasy. I still believe oils greatly aid in hair growth but when done correctly. My Indian side of the family oil their scalp/hair twice a week but they always wash it out. I think oil treatments as a prepoo are going to be my method of choice.
I.used to have a really flaky scalp until I stopped oiling it. Then the flakes went away
_itsvicky_ me too. Now I don't put anything on it but shampoo and my scalp is perfectly happy.
I've got The Science of Black Hair too. Great book.
As a child the practice was to grease the scalp. I suffered with a constantly itching scalp: without any dandruff, build up or bumps but it was agony.
When I decided to go natural I stopped applying anything to my scalp. I once tried a Jamaican Black Castor Oil challenge, only to be thrown back in time to an itchy scalp again upon 1st use. It took 4 washes to get my scalp to settle down. My hair loves it but my scalp screams every time.
Coconut oil is the only thing I can apply to my scalp but I generally do not put anything on my scalp as it's unnecessary for growth/healthy hair.
My hair is currently the healthiest it's ever been even though I've yet to see bra strap length let alone waist length! But I haven't given up hope!!!đ
Thanks for the video.
I grease and oil as close to my scalp as possible. Sometimes I oil my scalp but only when needed. If it is itchy or feels dry or hot for example. Water is key. Sometimes just going in with warm water and rinsing the scalp makes a big difference and I massage my scalp. Feels naturally oil. If I do not want to mess up a style and I am not ready to wash, I simply spray my scalp with water or with an aloe vera mix. I massage for about 5 to 10 minutes and the deed is done. I do not think grease is bad though because back in Trinidad I would use grease all the time but I water rinsed 3 times a week without re-applying the grease and my scalp was great. The first time I experienced flaking, itching etc was with my first sew in....... I was not rinsing like before. Everyone is different though.
I used to grease, then stopped because of CZcams and experienced ridiculously dry scalp and dandruff. I have a healthy diet and drink lots of water. Now I use a blend of oils specific to my scalpâs liking. My scalp doesnât like to go over 5 days without so I wash on day 6. Although, now instead of lubricating my scalp every other day I just do once a week on wash day. Anything more and I get s. dermatitis.
My avatar is an old picture of about 4 years. My hair is now natural and I most def use grease. In-fact today is the day I refresh with moisture . I will spray my hair with hot water and then put my B&B Pink lotion in it and afterwards, will be greasing my scalp.
Its funny that I used to oil my scalp only ones a months and that's when I was washing and plaiting and I never ever had any problem of itching or dandruff, surprisingly when I started oiling my scalp regularly my hair stopped growing its like it has reached menopauseđđđ now am going back to my old routine.
I guess it depends on the person. When I switched oils, everything was fine until recently. I noticed my scalp was having a reaction to it (painful, itchiness, flakiness) so I switched back to grease after years of using oil. My hair is doing good! Minor shedding. Really helps my super dry ends as well!
My scalp already over produces sebum, so greasing/oiling my scalp is unnecessary. I also live in a very humid climate, so when my mom use to grease my scalp as a kid, it was disasterous.
I experienced stunted hair growth from oiling too much after a traumatic event when I was 17. I didnât really know that I was doing more harm than good until years later when I decided to just stop using oil for a few months to see if there was any difference at all. My hair grew like it did when I was younger and as a result I only oil my hair once a week to keep it moisturized. I know Everybody else is different but thats what works for me personally
I agree, I was listening to these so call experts , they are wrong as to left shoes, and my hair is dry falling out itchy scalp. When I was using water and grease my hair was thick also And healthy. I am going back to what work for me Water and Grease !!!
when i used to oil my scalp my hair would be SOO itchy!
I used to think it was good to oil my scalp because of what I would hear on youtube.
However, since i stopped oiling my scalp I have experienced NO itching. My hair is still growing perfectly fine without oiling my scalp.
I oil my scalp if it needs it. I use food grade oils, and my scalp is much better off for it-not dry or itchy, and dandruff is a thing of the past. I use pure aloe gel on it too, at times. My hair has actually increased in thickness since I started doing this, grows relatively quickly, and is approaching tailbone length. Iâve never had an issue with clogged pores or hair follicles on my scalp, so I definitely think this is highly individual.
As others have pointed out, Indian women have been oiling their scalps for years, and have some incredibly thick, beautiful hair. So: I donât think itâs fair to say oiling the scalp is a bad idea.
I use to oil my scalp all the time with grease and I would wonder why it never grew and why I had bad dandruff. I stopped oiling my scalp 5 years ago and started washing my hair once a week because a clean scalp equals a healthy scalp. I have super fine 3c curly hair type but really that's what worked for me. You have to do what works for you. I'm sure others that have 4c hair type can go longer without washing their hair. I can go 2-3wks and then have to wash it because my scalp will start itching. I have went 2 - 3 months without washing my hair due to having box braids before the itching became unbearable LOL. Anyway, I stopped greasing my scalp and focused on my ends. I use blue magic grease and water on my hair and put it in buns. Most importantly, I leave my hair alone due to laziness LOL( low manipulation). My hair grew crazy thick and length wise and the dandruff magically went away. I literally heard little of what she said the entire video. I just came to hear someone else opinion on oiling scalp but I ended up only reading the comments and since I can't read and hear at the same time then here we are.
My hairâs grown more since I stopped greasing it and focused more on keeping my hair tangle and knot free
My mom greased my scalp and hair as a child and it did nothing for the growth or texture of my hair. I never greased my scalp as an adult and my hair grew waist length! If people just drink enough water for their body weight, their scalp and skin will be hydrated and there will be no need for grease or heavy moisturizers. Iâm speaking from experience. The best oil for scalp and skin is jojoba because itâs light, it doesnât clog pores and it mimics the skins natural sebum/oil.
I grew up greasing my scalp. I stop for a few years to see the differences. My scalp doesn't like heavy oils or heavy grease but sometimes it needs oils. For instance in the winter when the air is really dry. I don't have to lotion my skin too much in summer but I don't miss in winter. I find my hair likes an oil treatment but rinsed out. Hair products can sometimes be too heavy too and clog my scalp. It's hard to manage at times.
I only oil my scalp with JBCO about 2 times a week, its enough for me and my scalp is not itchy or left feeling dirty
I stopped greasing my scalp at 10yrs old. It kept my hair flat and my scalp accumulated so much crap. Throughout my life i revisited it but never kept the practice. There's no need. It also made dandruff worse. As an adult, i may use warm oils as a treatment but its washed out.
aqua fina this is exactly what I try to tell people excessively oiling your scalp makes scalp conditions like eczema worse. I stopped 10 years ago and I feel fine if my scalp feels a little dry I used an oil free spritz. Oil is not moisture its lubrication.
Thanks for the informative video! I grew up with relaxed hair and also thought that I needed to grease my scalp, as I had lots of problems with dandruff and itchiness. Now that I'm natural, I have adopted different hair care practices. I avoid oiling my scalp and apply oil to the hair shaft only during my LCO sessions (avocado oil is my favorite). I no longer have issues with flakes or itching!
one thing i appreciate is this isnt opinion like a lot of natural pages but you did proper RESEARCH. You have the science to back up theory
to a degree...but for SOME people it's the other way around, for beneficial reasons.
The molecular construct of oil is small and can penetrate the skin thus causing a blockage but âgreaseâ or petroleum jelly is too big of a molecule. Youâll find that jelly or grease will not cause acne or blockages:) I switched to grease and my hair can finally retain the moisture I worked so hard to put in it!
Great! I definitely need to make an update on grease. I'm glad to hear it's served you so well.
I used to grease then oil my scalp when I had a relaxer and I always had what I thought was dandruff. Once I went natural I stopped oiling my scalp( Which I first start was a mistake) but my hair actually started growing more. Also my scalp didn't itch anymore and I haven't "dandruff" ever since.
For some reason I grew up thinking that if I had lots of dandruff, in between styles, that meant my hair was growing, so I would try to go as long as possible in between wash days.. I donât know how I came to that false logic đ¤Śââď¸ lol.. but it wasnât until I got older and saw a dermatologist (at a practice directed by a Black doctor in Montclair, NJ) that I was finally corrected.. she explained a clean scalp was everything and she wasnât lying lol
I definitely donât do everything Iâm supposed to do to care for my hair but just keeping it clean and moisturized has done wonders, even with all my hormonal/health issues
My scalp is already pretty oily so I can go forever without adding oil. There was a time I didnât do it for a year and my hair grew fine. Never had dryness; it just feels so good after braids đ
You are a real natural beauty
flawless, hair, flawless skin
I need moisture more than oil so I prefer teas, sprtiz & mists to oils. This helps me avoid buildup and I can go two weeks before my next wash day. I do use creams/custards to reduce frizz, but I avoid the scalp. My hair is thin density, medium strands, high porosity.
Oiling can grow hair very fast i grew mine to my waist once, but caution of too much oiling and too much scalp massage. My hair shedded badly and lost half its density from constant head massages with coconut oil. My scalp became dry and itchy for months even after I stopped oiling so much. I believe my scalp got clogged and reacted as such. My hair hasn't been the same since. Also coconut oil has plenty of protein that my hair didn't need.
how is your hair now? is it regrown again?
Honestly i really think my hair 4c does not need a regimen. I have to just see what it needs when it needs it.if i don't have oil i will put grease in the scalp and vice versa. I spray my scalp with water occasionally too when it's dry.Not putting anything on my scalp does make my scalp dry, itchy and flaky after a while. I have eczema and psoriasis so my scalp is definitely more prone to dryness.
mstcherie13 same to a t
I don't grease my scalp specifically, but I have started adding grease to my hair again when I restyle before wash day. I apply it to damp hair and then comb or brush it. I know that in shorter areas it reaches my scalp, but doing it this way I havenât had any itching, and it cuts down on tangles. I think the most important factor is how much you use.
I have 3c hair and sulfur 8 hair grease is the only product that has stopped my scalp itch, it smells really bad when I'm in the sun though, that's the exchange lol
I donât grease my scalp. I find when I add olive oil to my deep conditioner my scalp is not dry and it is moisturized. Hence I donât have dry flaky scalp as a result of this regimen.
I do the same now
Girlll bye my mama used grease and my hair and it was down my back
đđđđđ
I used to use a leave in oil and I noticed every time I'd use it 3 to 4 days later I'd have a lot of dandruff so I try to avoid putting any oil or cream on my scalp. I can go a week without dandruff and maybe it's genetics but my scalp is quite greasy on its own! That's always a good thing.
I have seborrheic dermatitis and I have tried oiling and not and my scalp is dry and itchy both ways. Can you please research and share how we can make a conditioner with the same properties of sebum that we can put on our hair and scalp so our hair will be protected and grow without breaking at the rate of other hair types pleaseâ¤ď¸
aliciabrillante in the Science of Black Hair Audrey Davis Sivasothy proposed that small amounts of jojoba oil, a substance with a structure similar to our scalpâs sebum could be used to supplement dry scalp. In your case, since you actually have clinically dry scalp, this may be a healthy option for you. I wouldnât recommend applying anything else besides water to your scalp, however.
Other than that, the emphasis of your moisturising and sealing steps should be placed on your hair in lieu of your scalp. There is a licensed trichologist in the comment section, maybe you could reply to her message and see what other advice she has for your condition. I hope this helps!
Try using an anti fungal like ketaconazole tonwash your hair followed by a moisturising shampoo. Conditioner on hair, moituriser on hair if your scalp feels dry still use an oil free spritz like Anita Grants aloe rose .
I think grease works if you donât make enough oil from your glands but if you do , donât grease your scalp . I find my scalp gets really itchy and dirty with grease so in giving it a break .
Every. Single. Time. I put any type of oil, grease, or butter on my scalp I get massive amounts of irritation and shedding. As soon as I wash my hair, boom, itâs gone.
Dry scalp can also be attributed to African textured hairâs ability to rub back onto the scalp, and easily grab sebum and moisture from that area, causing dryness.
I know people have had success with greasing their scalp, and if it isnât causing isnât clogging of the pores, or irritation, more power to you, but for me at least, I find just spritzing regular deionized water on my scalp and giving myself a quick scalp massage is great for when I experience dryness
Im sorry but I actually donât agree with this one..
I have to use oil on my hair ,but use an oil treatment once a week this helps my hair health and growth. The oil treatment I use is mayonnaise or cholesterol . My hair seems to just absorb any oil and so I see the need for daily coconut oil, castol oil and olive oil. Is there an oil that I could use that stays on my strands , because I haven't been lucky at funding one , thank you .
When I grease my scalp it always produces a bunch of dandruff the next day.
I think when it come to oiling the scalp you need to check first if your hands are oily from your scalp if so just do a massage . Or if you feel you need to add more oil go ahead . But obviously just oiling your scalp because you said you would do it 4x a week Is not good if your scalp is already full of oil and I see why that could cause scalp issues .
I'm a barber and I hate greasy hair, every time grandma or auntie bring junior in for a fade i gotta deal with a freshly greased scalp, smh. We need to evolve into better, healthier grooming habits; that grease the scalp bullshit came from slaves in the fields trying to protect their scalp from that southern sun, 150 years latter and we still doing it, still using petroleum oils, smh. Then when we do go organic we pick the worst of the bunch, coconut oil, and Bamas continue to use it even after their scalp and hair hardens and the hair starts falling out, I mean I just don't get it....
Natural oils like Shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil which acts like the sebum in your hair treat dandruff which is caused by any thing but dry scalp is a big one. Greasing your scalp is good for black a well-greased scalp is a healthy scalp.
Actually I've tried going for a week and a half not oiling my scalp and it was extremely difficult not to do so. My scalp and hair are extremely dry. So when I don't oil it besides it being so dry but also when I don't my scalp feels so tight. When I do oil my scalp it feels more normal, not right or dry feeling. It feels more pliable. If this makes sense.
1ycj After putting oil directly on your scalp for so long, your scalp actually will stop producing its own sebum, so once you stop using oil on your hair your scalp will feel itchy because itâs dry.
I absolutely hate greasing my scalp it feels so dirty
Wawa M Possibly you are unaware how to apply oils and butters to your scalp... do you know the time frame in which oils absorb into your scalp and which oils can??
Grease makes my hair feel sticky and collects dust
@@MyfamilyJenkins what do you use to moisturize your hair and scalp?
I use coconut oil
@@MyfamilyJenkins oh OK... My hair hates oil so I have to use grease... I don't care for it all that much either but its good stuff
I think everybody hair is different. I would have problems with itchy scalp and dandruff. When I tried using oils, I had buildup on my scalp, but when I used grease my scalp was less itchy and no more dandruff.
would misting your scalp with water be a better option than greasing?
I don't grease my scalp as part of my hair routine but I do hot oil treatments on clean wet hair and put the mix oils +EO on my scalp and then rinse the excess off . Or as a prepoo and my hair feels better and often softer.
Ossouko 3 thats a great way to use oils
Im white and i have dry curly hair and scalp but i wash my hair once a week and i use like caster oil and essential oils however after washing my scalp and doing scalp treatment tonight i was thinking maybe i should let my scalp breathe and see what happens i don't have flakes or nothing but let me see how it acts all tho im really wanting to apply a light coat of black seed oil with some essential oils so it absorb in my dry scalp let me try this week with out
oh snap! I won't grease my scalp or wait 2 weeks to wash my hair ever again! Clogged pores and stunted growth are the opposite of what I want for my hair growth journey.
I find that my scalp flakes and scabs when I have a long term protective style in - like a sew in or braids.
I donât have dry scalp when my hair is loose. I put argan oil on my hair but not my scalp.
I am lazy with my hair.I have a bathroom full of oils...I just used them for the 1st time in about 2 years. They are multi purpose so i can use them on my skin too. My hair was filthy (just snapped out of a funk) almost dreaded on me. I washed, deep conditioned and oiled it. I am pretty sure I am going to get it braided for 2 months. My scalp has never been dry (before or after oiling)my hair strands are. I need help with dry hair.
I actually have A VERY oily scalp (naturally). It's very waxy. It needs to be removed so I use tresemme moisture rich shampoo and conditioner every week. I love doo gro grease!!
I donât use grease, hair lotion or hair cream,i just use Wild Hair Growth oil đ¤ˇđ˝ââď¸
greases are too thick so I use a light sunflower seed oil and maybe a cream at the ends. And then I use water into my scalp and ends to hydrate. I never have an issue with dandruff actually
My scalp donât like nothing applied to it. Anything I put on it other than water will act up my dermatitis
In Cuba we grease our hair but never ever our scalp .
Do you believe in terminal hair length? My goal is past tailbone length but hair has been stuck at bsl. I also have a major issue with dryness Iâll moisturize and 10 min later itâs dry again :/
You should try grease with a leave in it helps seal the moisture and use sulfate shampoo or a really deep cleansing shampoo ive always used grease ( dont put to much )and it helped me retain length on my 4c hair. Aloe vera is also really good .âş
Grease works for length retention, I was stuck at shoulder length for years until I went back to grease and water
(In my experience) the more I wash my hair/scalp the healthier it is.. kind of like, how you can still gain or retain weight (fat) when you âdonât really eat.â When your body doesnât know when youâre going to eat next it just begins to store your fat more, instead of burning it off.
(In my opinion) your hair will produce its own natural oils more once it knows that it will be cleansed and moisturized/hydrated on a regular basis.. if that analogy makes any sense lol..
And I can only use certain very light weight oils (sweet almond, jojoba, etc.) on the length of my hair after straightening.. I can use heavier oils when I pre poo but still nothing on my scalp.. or Iâll walk out of the salon with flakes so big like I didnât just spend my time and a cute coin to get it done đ¤Śââď¸ lol
Thank you for sharing this information!
I thought my dry scalp occurred because i didn't oil it but since i started putting aloe vera on it before shampooing, i have never had the issue again
Are you saying applying grease to the scalp is better than applying oil
How often should we wash our hair? I'm currently doing it every 3 weeks with shampoo and in between water rinsing once a week.
I never oil my scalp just wash it frequently
I only use Batana oil on my scalp once a week. My scalp hates anything else. Iâve tried not oiling my scalp and flakes arrive in 3 days. Gotta oil my scalp.
Hmmm - I wonder what makes batana oil so special. I'm curious - this is my first time hearing about it. I recently held a live chat on my Instagram (@Naturally_High_Hair) with a trichologist and she was saying that a flaky scalp is indicative of oiliness, not dryness. It can be provoked by the presence of malassezia on the scalp. This is an opportunistic commensal fungus that feed on lipids. Oiling your scalp can increase its abundance and trigger itchy or flaky scalp. Watch the live chat!
Thank you all for your comments..... They've been helpful
You're most welcome
How about jojoba oil that is closest to our skin oils
safiyah nkodia itâs fine to use it sparingly if youâre suffering from clinically dry scalp (according to Davis Sivasothy in the Science of Black Hair).
Jojoba oil does not penetrate the hair shaft or scalp at all
rho690 Exactly each head is different as well each person absorbs oils differently
caramel chocolate oh okay my apologies
rho690 this is true but it is similar in structure to sebum and therefore could be used to supplement low sebum levels amongst those with chronically dry scalp.
Must I use sulfate shampoo to wash the grease out
Love the vid
I love reading blogs and visiting natural Hair channels because of the UNITY and yes I'M a natural African American BUT what I don't understand is why we dont unite at Work and support each other like we do here??
I only oil my scalp when itchy which is less often now
You're so great!!!!
I put oil on my scalp and I have sebboric dermatitist. If i don't put oil on my scalp I get a break out....
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the information.... I have a question... not pertaining to hair but Iâm just curious... are you still studying Spanish or do you still speak it daily?
Thank you
Love your accent.đ
Grease gave me terrible dandruff back on the day.
Same.
Grease scalp and ends
better than dry scalp
it gets ichy like almost every freaking time
Some of what you are saying is not for black ppl at all. Greasing your hair with natural oils and lubricants can be beneficial for your hair
Exactly. I tried using the fancy oils and they did nothing for my hair,so I went back to good old grease. I know several Black elder sistahs who have greased their scalp all their lives and they all have long thick hair. One of the elders even told me,she tried the oil thing for about a month and her hair begin to break off. She trimmed the damage and went back to grease and her hair has grown even passed the point where it was before the damage. If oils work for you, cool but oils don't work for me at all unless it's already in the grease. Grease is a great sealant.
@@simonex5572 that's what I was talking about greasing your scalp and hair I use both oils and grease. Shea butter is like a grease too.
