Also, the "turntable" sound is Tom Morello toggling between two pickups, one on and one off, while rubbing his hands on the strings over the pickups to create the effect that someone is scratching a vinyl disc - you can hear the sound of the strings scrape as he does it. He also used a wah wah pedal, and I think for some of his later songs he integrated a sort of effects unit touchpad into his guitar to give him even more sonic variety.

I saw a zoom interview with Tom, right at the beginning of the pandemic lock downs, where they asked him, not how he made those sounds, but what made him even try something so far out of the box in the first place....
Tom said the week before they went into the studio to start recording their debut album, he was listening to some morning radio show. They had a musical guest on who was a popular DJ at the time, and was performing locally that night at some club or concert. Tom said he was being a bit braggadocios, which was common for DJ's and Hip-Hop back then and said something along the lines of..."Yeah, I'm so good I'm gonna put wedding bands and rock guitarists out of business". Tom said it got under his skin, and he said to himself..."Oh yeah mo-fo, well let's see if this rock guitarist can put you out of business!!"
He then went straight to his room and started trying to figure out how to make his guitar sound like a DJ record scratch, and he worked on it for like 2-3 days straight, by the time he got to the studio to start laying down tracks, he had not only discovered how to record scratch on the guitar, but a lot of other similar type unique sounds and styles. He played them for the rest of the band and they loved it and decided to incorporate them into their songs, and the rest is history.

It is about the military spending and the hunger for war to keep spending on that.
Morello has a major in political science from Harvard AND he also introduced Adam Jones and Maynard James Keenan to Danny Carey - happy happy coincidences and we are gifted with such amazing bands.

Bingo Bingo! The MIC to be exact, a triad of organizations that include arms dealers/weapons manufacturers, U.S. legislators/Lobbyist and the U.S. Military itself.
The term was coined by President Eisenhower, see, after WWII, where we battled Germany and Japan at the same time, Congress passed legislation that we build our military in such a way that we would be prepared to fight two major conflicts or wars, on different fronts, at any given time.
By 1961, when Eisenhower gave his presidential farewell speech, we had more than accomplished that goal, and despite a lot of powerful people being upset that Eisenhower didn't tell a nostalgic/heroic story about WWII, which he fought in, he instead warned of this new 3 way relationship, which he called the Military Industrial Complex, and said now that our goal was met we needed to quit using it, or it would send the country in a dangerous direction of seeking out conflict and war globally in order to feed the greed of the MIC. Pretty prophetic stuff!!

The lyrics in the song that summarize the whole thing are :
    "Weapons, not shoes,
    not homes, not food.
    No need, just feed
    the war cannibal animal. I
walk the corner to the rubble
that used to be a library.
Line up to the mind cemetery. Now
    what we don't know
keeps the contracts alive and movin'.
They don't gotta burn the books,
    they just remove 'em
while arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells.
Rally round the family, with a pocket full of shells."
It's about politicians that claim to represent family values on the campaign trail, but once elected, pour all the funding into defense contractors/arms manufacturers to make weapons for war instead of social work projects.

The first time I heard them was shortly after discovering Nirvana and grunge music, that was my "eargasm" moment for me, hearing something sooooo different. Anyway, not long after I heard RATM when some one popped their tape in the boom box we listened to at the skate board half pipe I spent a lot of time at. I got soooo friggin pumped I pulled off a trick I had been trying to do for weeks!! I was like, ok, that's the new house band for this half pipe..lol. I got into them pretty heavy, but it still embarrasses me that it was almost 15yrs later after that, when I started revisiting bands of my youth, that I started really paying attention to the lyrics.

I'm a guitar player, and I've been playing for about 30 years. Yes, all the sounds are done full on guitar. It isn't really that difficult to do anything done in the song it's just that no one else had done it before this. In fact, with the scratching thing, even how Tom does it adds some unnecessary steps. I'm self-taught, so being able to make weird noises is just part of the journey.

    • @sunshynff
      @sunshynff Před měsícem

Well the Beastie Boys did do it briefly, but that was more because they started out more of a punk rock band who fell in love with hip-hop, which was a genre getting almost no love on major radio stations back in the day, so their management at the time couldn't stop them from switching to rap, but talked them into making their first couple singles a combination rock-rap, so they could hopefully get some radio play, which worked, in 1983/84 they got tapped as the opening act for the Madonna tour....lol. The first actual hit that was truly rap-rock was in 1986, with Run DMCs remake of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way", which also featured Aerosmith.

They never had a DJ in the band.
Tom uses a combination of effects pedals for his guitars and manipulating the guitar itself.
For the turntable like sounds, he would hit a switch or two on the guitar and literally rub his hands acrusd the strings.

My husband saw them in Hawaii back in the day (early 90s)….. the entire arena was like a mosh pit. Said is was f$cking scary and super exciting at the same time!!!!
Yep- THAT IS TOM!!! He has his own special set of skills (claims them as making R2-D2 noises). Zack comes from an ancestral line of Mexican revolutionists….so he had a LOT of content to speak on. Morello was, obviously, also an activist, but Zack contributed a majority of the fuel to that fire. However, speaking of fire, it was their bassist who set the American flag a-blaze at the 1999 Woodstock appearance. They have also been permanently banned from SNL d/t their unapproved/inappropriate flag hanging tactics.

I live in NE Ohio within spitting distance of the Rock Hall. There is currently a video of Tom talking about his sound and how his guitar when he was young didn't have the bells and whistles that a lot of other guitars had, so he had to get creative with his toggle switch and tools. I'm fact, one of their songs unique sound comes from striking an Allen wrench on the strings. He also didn't pick up a guitar until he was around 18, so he got a super late start to playing.

Idk, man. I think rap-metal/nu-metal really had it's roots earlier than you're thinking. The way I remember it unfolding is that, at first, it wasn't even a glimmer of an idea in anyone's head. The two genres couldn't be further apart, most people thought. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Run DMC and Aerosmith busted out a HUGE crossover hit with "Walk This Way" that brought rap more into the mainstream and opened people's eyes to the magic of the two genres combining. You can draw a direct line of inspiration from there to the Beastie Boys and Rick Rubin's innovation of using Led Zeppelin and other heavy guitar samples and loops for the "Licensed to Ill" album. This, in turn, inspired Anthrax to do metal versions of Public Enemy songs ("Fight the Power" and "Bring tha Noize") along with their own metal/rap hybrid songs on their "Killer Bs" album, as well as doing stuff with Beastie Boys, etc.
From that point on, people started experimenting with this new idea of mixing rap and metal (which, before that, would've sounded like a crazy idea) but it still hadn't gotten huge. This is when you start hearing the funk metal bands you mentioned (Faith No More being at the top of that list, I think, especially with their biggest, rappiest hit, "Epic"). Not long after, there was the soundtrack for the movie "Judgement Night," where every song on the album featured a metal band paired with a rap group. A little while after that, we started seeing the first rap metal bands, and this group of metal bands with rap-style vocals eventually turned into a whole-ass genre called nu-metal.
Regardless of where it started, the reason I personally wouldn't include Rage Against the Machine into the nu-metal genre is because I feel like they came to their sound more organically than the nu-metal bands. The reason Rage had rap vocals is because Zach was a rapper. Period. He wasn't a metal singer who decided to rap his vocals because it was a cool new style. He rapped because he was a rapper and the other guys played funky metal because that's who they were. These four guys just each did their own thing and it created this sound.
By contrast, the singers of most nu-metal bands were really metal singers (or metal singers at heart) who started doing rap style cadences instead of singing because that was the trendy new thing to do. With those bands, it was a costume they were wearing. With Rage, it was just who they were as musicians.
Either way, I think if you put Rage Against the Machine up against any nu-metal band, there's a difference there that is pretty striking. Rage, imo, is in their own lane that no one else shares and no one else has even gotten close to sharing since. This isn't because -- like you theorized -- that I don't like nu-metal and so I don't want Rage to be part of that scene. I actually liked nu-metal (most of it). I feel this way because I honestly think Rage's sound doesn't fit the nu-metal sound and is, instead, it's own beast. They're one of those classic bands that's so unique in what they do, they transcend genre.

I would say they were the Segway. Beastie Boy's 'Sabotage' was probably the first song to introduce this style.

From the POV of a 40+ dude like me who discovered Ratm at 11, when looking it back, the genre would be more RapCore or Heavy Funk more than New metal even though in the 2000's they Felt into this broad genre. New metal in my humble opinion has more distortion, heavy riff and way more less this unique funky / groove that Ratm always brought with them.
Always a pleasure to watch you react.
    Love from France.

Fun Fact: Tom Morello would’ve never been in a band without someone’s help: Adam Jones. The only reason it helped Tom start his career to be in his first band, was because Adam needed a “wingman” for a couple of ladies Adam bought with him! 😊
Idk if anyone said it yet!

I’ve been saying all over YT that one line is bigger than ever: “They don’t gotta burn the books, they just remove them.” As much as that has happened thruout history, it’s also happening right now in 2024 America. Removing the books they don’t agree with. Trying to decide what people can and can’t learn. That’s a real “mind cemetery”.

Actually, Tom Morello major in political science and even work on the White House some years before RATM become big.
