  • Coleus are a tender annual that are fairly expensive to buy in the garden centers. They are grown for their great looking leaves and can take partial shade and sun. They are more colorful when not in fulls sun. I show you how to start them indoors and get them ready for the outdoors. They grow fast and are easy to start. Save money and start some!

    In Ireland i have grown the same coleus plant for three years. I eventually used it as a mother plant as they are very easy to root from slips.

    Guys, don't press seeds into soil with your fingers, especially when soil is dry. Seeds will stick to your fingertips and it's a mess. Hold your spray bottle at least 3ft away and mist them until surface is damp. I leave seeds like coleus/calibrachoa/snapdragon on surface, but if you want to cover you can then sprinkle with very fine, dry soil and do another round of misting.

    Great video, thanks so much! A lot of helpful tips! Just one question I was curious about. Have you ever heard that changing the ph deliberately will brighten up the colors? I was watching a diy show a while back, & I remembered that one of the hosts had planted transplanted a full grown coleus plant & gave a tip to bury a rusty nail to change the ph in the dirt & that would really bring out the colors?? Have you heard of this method, is there any truth to it? Would love to know! Thanks so much.

    I planted 3 120 trays of those this Spring and they didn't come up. I think it was too cold for them, although it shouldn't have been; I didn't get my Heuchera either, so now I'm really determined. My petunias came up, and everything else did well, but those and Arizona Gaillardia.That one is a puzzle.

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  Před 7 lety

      That is a puzzle. Did the stay to damp perhaps and mold or rot. Would be a stretch though.

  • @katkur9731

    I’ve noticed that you put your trays in aluminum baking tins. I’ve read that aluminum can alter soil ph. Is this accurate? I’m not planting in the tins, just using them as drip trays and for bottom watering for my solo cups. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn’t setting up my seedlings for failure. Thank you so much for your videos and all your knowledge. I’m a faithful follower

    thank you i needed this tutorial, yesterday i've purchased a coleus seeds pack (color mix) from a house&gardening supermarket (Dedeman) and the pack has 0.5 grams and cost me 2.5 RON ( $0.63) . When i got back at home i've planted the seeds indoor and hopefully will get some nice plants..i've heard that this plant grows very fast . To bad it's annual si i guess in the fall will die.
    At least coleus seeds are bigger than the petunia seeds..i hate small seeds :)) (because of small germination/survival rate)
    Monday i'm gonna purchase a wild strawberry seeds pack (fragaria vesca) to try few in a pot or 2. I guess it's not to late to sow wild-strawberries and i could get some to harvest ? I've heard these can keep producing until late fall ..Also another question, if i make wild strawberries plants from seeds, how to save the roots alive for next year, over the winter ?
    (there is no wild-strawberries roots to buy, only for normal strawberries so i have to start from seeds)

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  Před 9 lety

      They like the warmth. If you have space to keep the protected indoors it depends how big you want them. You want to start them 8-10 weeks before the last frost date in your area. If you dont really have room to keep them inside about 8-10 weeks before the night stay around 50.

    You didn't mention how often to water at each stage. Is it just a case of wait till the soil seems dry then add water or is it more consistent like every other day while they're growing from seeds and every day when they're moved to the cups...

    hello Gary. I've been growing veg for a few years and do pretty well with them. Want to grow some flower to brighten up the front yard for my wife. We live in New England and the flowers I want to grow are Bachelor Buttons, Cosmos, Aster, Marigold, Snapdragon and Zinnia. The packages all say "Outdoor Planting Dates" of April-June. Would I be ok if I started them now or is it to late for this year? Was planning on using the paper towel method for germination. Don't have a heating pad so can I just use my homemade grow light? Ty, Jack

    • @MyFirstVegetableGarden
      @MyFirstVegetableGarden  Před 9 lety

      Jack Yep, start them now. I dont think you need to germinate first as the all grow really well. Save some time and just put them in the starting mix. The grow light should do nicely. But I also recommend putting the seed outside during the day when young as the sun will help them.

      Gary Pilarchik I have never heard of these before this year. They look pretty cool and I like how you never know what they will look like and if you get a really cool looking one you can name it and clone it forever. I have over 200 growing now with two tiny leaves. I didn't even push them down I just sprinkled a bunch right on top and when they sprouted used an eye glass screwdriver to pick them right off the surface and put them in their own cells. it worked really good. I filled a bunch of those plastic cells most of the way with cheap topsoil and the very top with that special seed starting soil.
