Love your channel! I've learned so much. thanks for educating us.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching.
I've had coleus reseed on their own, and when I pinch out the blooms I throw them on the ground so that they will come up from seed the following year. This is the first year I've actually sown seeds in a container using seeds I collected from coleus several years ago. This is turning out to the year I'm collecting seed from almost all of the plants I've really enjoyed. It can't get better than free! I collect cuttings in the fall and overwinter in containers in my kitchen window or plant up small seedlings that I overwinter in my unheated, attached garage, where the temps have never fallen below 39, which coleus don't mind at all.
I am hoping to collect seed this Fall of these. I have never been able to overwinter them successfully but I have a dark house and little room so I am not sure I will attempt it again but who knows, I may give it a whirl. I don't have a space like the your garage, ours has no windows, but it sounds ideal for overwintering many things. I have not tried direct sowing in the Fall with these but I think I may and see what happens. Our main issue is we get what I call a fake spring where things will germinate and then we get hit with some hard freezes, killing off the tender seedlings.
I did winter sowing in milk jugs that I started in January of '22. I had such a variety! Those I planted directly in the garden with 5 hours of sun and they grew up to 4' tall! I pinched them back all season, but in the fall, I let some go to seed. This year they have just popped up all over and are so easy to transplant where you want. I don't think I'll ever have to buy any again 😁
That is great to know, I have not tried any of these in any direct sun but I have plenty in small pots I may try and see how they do with morning sun.
I’ll have to try dollar store seeds, thanks!
You are welcome! So far they have worked great for me.
How do you overwinter the coleus?
I don't, I start them from seed in the late winter, early Springtime. They are so easy to start from seed that overwintering them is not worth it, for me.
