    In my marching band some of the instructors were in this show and they explained the story of the baritone that is thrown onto the field in the very beginning of the show. Basically one of the baritones (Tyler Miller, who was one of our bands' instructors a few years ago) left his baritone in a parking lot somehow and it got ran over by a pick-up truck. When the Cadets instructors found it Tyler was punished but the rest of the band kept the baritone and played soccer and other games with it after practice was over. It eventually was added to the show to be thrown across the field at the start (can be seen at 0:21). This story was told by another instructor who was a tuba in this show.

      And then there's Blue Devils 94 ("My Spanish Heart", featuring "Spanish Fantasy" and other music by Chick Corea- what a weird piece), which I *think* is still one of the only, if not the only, "down" endings in a DCI championship-winning show.
      If you watch it again, look for the guard guy at the top of the heart made by the flags laying on the field--the one who jumps a field version of a figure skater's double axel, except from a dead stop, in the last five seconds or so of the show. Good God.

    This was the first ever DCI show I saw, along with many of my bandmates. It was during band camp in my first year of marching band. We were sat down after dinner in a big hall. Seeing this show on the projector and the big, full sound the entire corps blasting through the PA system was just mind blowing. It helped that the theme was easy to understand too for a bunch of 13 year olds.
    The full sound of the brass, the amazingly choppy and clean beats from the drumline, the expressive playing from the front ensemble, and the super clean and graceful visuals from the colour guard. It was such a big inspiration.
    RIP Cadets, FHNSAB.

    I'm one of those people who loved the drum corps activity up until the last 10 years or so (I miss the G bugles like a lot of the "old school" fans do)..... HOWEVER, I must say this show was absolutely amazing. Their gold medal finish was definitely well-deserved. Despite the high physical demand these kids had, they played and spun so well.

    • @KyleNally
      @KyleNally Před 4 lety

      The thing about using Bb horns is that more people can play them. DCI wanted to facilitate the inclusion of more high-level performers, but no matter how good you are, there's always a learning curve moving from a three-valve Bb instrument to a two-valve G bugle. Yes, they were higher and brighter (and harder to play in tune!), but I really think DCI produces better shows now because half the season isn't being spent getting used to a new instrument with different fingerings.

    Frank Ticheli arranges beautiful music with the -hummable- main melody restated many times through the piece. I suggest you listen to his Amazing Grace, Loch Lomond or Shenandoah, more traditional arrangements. As for corp's from the 70's and 80's, many former members are teaching major corps (Carolina Crown, Blue Devils) and taking DCI to a new level based on what they learned along the way. Never forget that you would not have your I-Pad if it wasn't for the transister and circuit board.

    DCI should do more video recordings this close! I don't care if it would look a bit "amature" this adds a lot more depth to the show! The closest I've ever been to a show was finals night when a demon colorguard was changing at the end zone into her angel costume... Wow I kept looking at her because she did all her performance right at me! She looked at me and I couldn't take my eyes off of how she was performing to the angelic look.

      The very best corps - i.e. those that have won championships - have a signature brass sound that is uniquely theirs: you can hear just a snippet of their show and, with no prior intro or visuals/unis to go off of, immediately identify the corps in question. The two most notable examples, IMO, are Devs and Crown.

    Every year in DCI is amazing, but each year every group gets better and better. More and more people, who might not even play a single instrument, are becoming fans of DCI because of the shows they put on. I'm not saying that a 1990's DCI show isn't great, it just keeps getting better each year. Plus music evolves over the years, which mean DCI evolves as well.

    We wore gauntlets from 2003-2006. I marched 06 and 07, I guarantee I wore a pair of gauntlets in 06. Then we switched uniform companies and went back to the older style in 07 and got rid of the gauntlets. Hope this clears things up

    By far my favorite show ever. This replaced Phantom Regiment 2008 as my number 1.

    This is cool to watch now. And I like multi cam to an extent. I do however despise how they do multi cam when they show performances at the cinema. So much is missed. I prefer to watch full cam until I get something on dvd. This would be a cool feature for each corp as well.

    Any corps and their staff is free to use whichever technique they choose. I do believe that most corps use 2nd position as their standard, but Cadets' technique varies from the rest of DCI. That's what you get everywhere you go. Subtle differences. It's all personal preference of the staff. :)
