This is one of my favorite album covers of all time. I believe I bought this album the day it was released in the US (I visited record stres nearly every day back then and I bought the album the day I first saw it disaplyed in the record store). I knew nothing about the band. I had never head of them. I didn't even know if it was rock and roll. It could have been opera for all I knew. But that abum cover galvanized me the second I saw it. I bought that album on the strength of the album cover alone. I was not disappointed when I got home and put the record on. The atmospheric sound effects, the tritone guitar riff, Ozzy's dark, husky vocals, it all captivated me. I liked the band before that first song was over. Thank you so much for this. I have spent so many hours staring at that picture over the years. It was really fascinating to see the real location.

A ringer is a horse substituted for another of similar appearance in order to defraud the bookies. This word originated in the US horse-racing fraternity at the end of the 19th century. The word is defined for us in a copy of the Manitoba Free Press from October 1882:
"A horse that is taken through the country and trotted under a false name and pedigree is called a 'ringer.'"
It has since been adopted into the language to mean any very close duplicate. As a verb, 'ring' has long been used to mean 'exchange/substitute' in a variety of situations, most of them illegal. From the same period is the term 'ring castors', meaning to surreptitiously exchange hats. Castors, or casters, were hats made from beaver fur. From the 20th century we have the Australian phrase, 'ring in the gray (or knob)', meaning to substitute a double-sided penny for a genuine one. Coming more up to date we have 'car ringing', which is the replacing of the identification numbers on a stolen car with those from a genuine (usually scrapped) vehicle.
So, that's ringer; what about dead? Dead, in the sense of lifeless, is so commonly used that we tend to ignore its other meanings. The meaning that's relevant here is exact or precise. This is demonstrated in many phrases; 'dead shot', 'dead centre', 'dead heat', etc.

Hey! Do you realise that the church featured heavily in the 1976 film, 'The Eagle Has Landed?' Michael Caine stood in the church doorway talking to actor Treat Williams, who was playing a US Army Ranger officer. Mapledurham was used extensively in the film. Guess what? THE MILL was used too! They built a mock up mill and waterwheel directly in front of the original mill- as featured on the Sabbath gatefold! The film makers could not use the original water wheel for the scene that they wanted, so they built a mock up.

The watermill was also used as a filming location for Taboo with Tom Hardy a few years ago, the church was also used in The Eagle Has Landed with Michael Caine

Welcome to England! The Mapledurham Watermill featured in an episode of Miss Marple: The Blue Geranium where a woman dies after being warned by a medium, which I think is kinda cool because Agatha Christie is very dark, full of murder, betrayal & deceit - not as cosy as people often assume! We love our Murder mysteries here in England! Very spooky setting!

Loving your tour of England. I live about 20 minutes from Mapledurham and once went to a Christening in that church. Did you get to have a look inside, it’s beautiful? We arrived by boat along The Thames and walked past the water mill, I had no idea it was the one from the Sabbath cover at the time! Not really your genre but The Eagle has Landed was filmed in Mapledurham, the church features a lot.

One of the things I love about Europe is, how old it is compared to America. So much history.
Looking forward to see what else you decide to dig up and film while across the pond.

STAR LAKE!!, you just took me down memory lane. Saw many 'a shows there, from Slayer to The Allman Brother and everyone in between - that's where you went to concerts if you lived in the PGH area. In fact, I was just up thata way last month for some family business (first time I'd been there since about 2011) and the venue is now called The Pavillion at Star Lake, so it has reclaimed part of the original name, at least for now. Thanks for and great channel and thanks for what you do, friend!!

No matter what time of year it is, if its dark and gloomy outside, that first Black Sabbath album is listened to. Of course if its fall time, then the feeling surrounding the Sabbath music is very special. Good show!😎🤘
