Little fun fact about Bismuth: She actually confirms the existence of metal being part of the Gem race since Bismuth is a type of metal rather than a jewel or stone.

And it actually fits some throwaway lines from earlier episodes. Peridot says something to Amethyst in the initial trip to the Kindergarten about her being "the only actual gem," in the Crystal Gems. And while while its clearly referring to Garnets fusion status and Stevens hybrid status, its ALSO implying a distinction between gemstones like quartzes (Jasper, Amethyst, etc) and organic stones like Pearls. So there being such distinctions is already canon by this point
Bismuth is a metal, but it does form crystals when heated and cooled right, rather than the mostly-amorphous structure of most metals. You CAN make other metals make crystals but bismuth does it pretty easily at at-home temperatures and pressures, and you can get a cool rainbow.effect. So she's not a gemstone, but she is a crystal
They're all inorganic materials even pebbles exist
So.. if peridot tried hard enough… she could use her metal telekinesis powers on bismuth… heh, imagine the shenanigans
I remember what Greg said way back in season one. "There's no such thing as a good war." No matter what you do, there will be casualties, and if you stay out of it, the earth is destroyed. I'm not saying there wasn't room for improvement, but I'm sure happy that I don't have to deal with that kind of ultimatum.
It is very interesting how Rose´s story is told in reverse, and we learn more and more about her past as the show goes on. No more said now, though.

Lapis just went downhill after superwatermelon island, i like her but her being the abuser and the victim is just a "no no", I'd rather feel pity for Jasper for becoming everyone’s punching bag.
Look at how jealous Eyeball is when "Jasper" lets Doc sit on her lap to pilot the ship.
I don't think I've ever watched a show that gave so much depth and character development to a dead character. Sure, there are some characters (like Harry Potter's father) that show two sides of themselves. But never have I seen this much complexity from a character the audience never knew first hand. It's amazing.

The interesting thing about Eyeball's weapon is that it's a chisel, which is a sculpting tool. Meant to break rocks. She was literally made to fight other gems
As children we grow up with an image in our heads of who our parents are, and thats even more extreme for children who have lost a parent as a baby like Steven did. He put his mother on a pedestal, and now that he's growing up that image of her in his head is cracking and he's struggling reconciling the "perfect" person in his head with the reality that no one is perfect, and we all make mistakes becoming the people who we are.
Boy oh boy the shot of when bismuth and Steven meet gived me shivers the first time. I don’t know why but I felt it was good and bad that bismuth was there call it intuition but anyway nice reaction krysta !

Take a moment to look back at both Steven and Amethyst.
Steven from episode one onward was terribly fearful that he would never get the Gem powers needed to become a Crystal Gem and help GAP, so much so that he nearly broke down admitting this to Connie before discovering that he had healing spit rather than tears. Garnet and Pearl seem to look on Steven as Rose Quartz's heir...they hadn't contradicted him since encountering Peridot...and Steven still feels inadequate/unable to measure up to Rose Quartz's ideals even after he's inherited most of her powers.
Amethyst has been treated by Garnet and Pearl as the least important of the Crystal Gems. While it is true that Amethyst contributed to this by her slack discipline, words like Garnet's "we kept Amethyst, didn't we?" and Peridot's joking were very hurtful , especially once Amethyst learns that she's supposed to be a big warrior elite Gem, not a "runt".
It was therefore very important to their joint development that they realize that it's improbable that they could accomplish certain things by themselves, only together. Steven and Connie couldn't outfight Jasper by themselves, only together as Stevonnie. Same for Steven and Amethyst.
As for Rose Quartz shattering Pink Diamond, when did RQ become a pacifist on this show? She was the leader of a violent rebellion to protect Earth's life; she was the commander of one side of a battle where "thousands of Gems were destroyed" (Strawberry battlefield). To Lapis's voicing of the hopeless words of "we can't fight them", Steven resolutely replies "that's why we HAVE to fight them". Some things are worth dying for; and in such case it may also be worth killing for if necessary.
Was Pink Diamond straight up assassinated in cold blood, for no real reason? Was she shattered in a fight? Was she shattered to prevent her from doing something absolutely terrible to Earth?
Also remember, if you didn't think that what Rose Quartz did to Bismuth wasn't right, Garnet and Pearl apparently just accepted Steven's account without question and didn't bother to release Bismuth from the bubble so she could re-form and tell her side of the story. Sometimes the enemies are not just in front of you.
This made me wonder what if Steven ended up like Mirabel and never got his powers.....

1_ it is sad to see how amethyst believes so little, so incapable.
Seeing how this affects her so much prevents her from expressing how she feels and doesn't allow her to let go of who she really is.
Another thing about the episode is seeing how Steven was so mentally manipulated that he actually feels like he has to be his mother.
See how a child was indoctrinated to think that he was a mistake and that if his mother was still alive everything would be better. Seeing how her family members miss her and argue over her really affects Steven.
2_ Ok, bismuth...
A gem who came to want to do crazy things to protect those she loved.
This behavior can become selfish, not thinking of the gems it would destroy without the ability to regenerate.
She was locked up without her loved ones even knowing what had happened to her.
(I won't talk about it anymore, I don't want to throw a spoiler).
In the chapter we also see how Steven thinks again that he will not be able to look like his mother

What could you do if you were a gem with a purpose and only for that you serve without knowing what change is.
Up to a certain point, you can understand why she feels this way, They shattered her diamond, her creator. Someone so important to a gem, and more so if Jasper's purpose was to be a warrior who would fight for her diamond.

I love how much you love Peridot, I feel like a lot of people underestimate her arc & how much growth she went through in such a short amount of time. I think her and Lapis' relationship is the cutest & they're able to help each other so much, just warms my heart every time we see them interacting.

The fusions are obviously one of the best parts of the show, I like their basically a whole new character but combining the best traits of the gems that it made up of. Also the fused weapons are amazing.
Steven vs Amethyst - I really like how this episode showcases how much Ame has grown already. Ame in season 1 would have never been able to admit she was feeling bad about the fight with Jasper, and she even was very aware that she tends to lash out at others. This episode also just really goes hard on Ame and Steven’s sibling dynamic. It’s so wholesome how she’s obviously proud of him but she hates that she’s not able to teach him anything anymore. Set up for Smokey too. Ponytail Ame is also Best Ame. Side note: the grinding eggs in the disposal makes me think of Chidi’s metaphor of his brain feeling like a spoon stuck in the disposal when he gets too stressed in the Good Place.
Bismuth - This was a treat to watch when it aired, and it was double length which is why there was that little anime intermission thing. The VA for Bismuth, her delivery of “Then you really are better than her” is just… so good. “It’ll be really funny if she does it a third time.” IT WAS NOT FUNNY THE THIRD TIME! I get both Rose and Bismuth’s sides on this, but if you use a weapon you better be prepared to eat it.
Beta - I love that Peri and Lapis are just chilling and making meep morp at the barn. They’re so cute.
Earthlings - I think Smokey is non-binary, like Stevonnie. And I love them. I love puns and they’re just… the best. I love that Ame was the first Gem that Steven fused with. They’ve always had the most in common. “Come here, sis.” I will never be over this delivery from Dietz. It’s one of the reasons Ame is my fav.
Back to the Moon - I love that Ame was just as surprised as Steven that Rose shattered Pink Diamond.
Bubbled - Some of these space shots are so flippin gorgeous. I love that we got Love Like You in the show and that the Gems were all a mess when they were reunited.
oh, also, FYI: Bismuth was the 100th episode and an incredibly hyped up special, hence the credits continuing into the show and the transitions.
this season finale is WILD, from now things will get real lol. Loving so much these, you're great, Krysta!

If you even attempt to argue that violence is correct under that context you’re tacitly ceding that the use of violence is the important point of distinction, and not the anti/fascist point. It’s a really clever and insidious rhetorical device.
The Gems were fighting an asymmetrical war against an overwhelmingly powerful force, that Earth even survived at all is solely due to the deployment of the anti-gem WMD and subsequent repurposing of the planet as the cluster’s incubator, it’s not like Rose’s tactics won the war.

@@DrawciaGleam02 The Diamonds decided to use the Flash of Light, which destroyed or corrupted every gem Rose didn’t protect, then the diamonds decided the earth wasn’t worth colonizing and repurposed it as the incubator for the cluster instead.
I suppose a part of the reason why they decided to do this is because of Pink Diamonds loss, so I guess Rose is responsible for that, but that was a shattering, a targeted assassination of an enemy general, very much in line with the kind of tactics Bismuth was advocating for.
Season 3 is really where the plot starts to thicken, up until this point they've only given small details here and there to give context to what the Crystal Gems have been doing the whole time, but now they're giving you a lot of the bigger clues about what exactly went down and the gravity of the situation really sets in, it's such amazing storytelling. Unfortunately season 4 is like 70% filler but there are some really good episodes still, then season 5 is just nonstop emotional kicks to the gut you may wanna not wear makeup for those episodes lol. Can't wait to re-live it again vicariously through you!

There must have been some planning for Bismuth: the first time Steven goes into Lion's mane you can see Bismuth's gem floating there.
I don’t like how the bismuth episode makes it seem that bismuth is just in the wrong, it was war and she had to see her friends die and suffer under tyrants. Especially after what we see in episodes later in the show I think Rose shouldn’t have gone that route.
out of all my time re-watching Steven Universe, I never made the psychological connection of Jasper returning to the place where she was born. Nice One Krystalogy!!!!

Bismuth was basically saying "I'm going to kill your family" to Rose/Pink, and she wanted to try to just scare everyone away. They fought and Rose bubbled her to try for the ending she wanted. It didn't work out...

I guess what I meant is that she prioritized the people she loved while a bunch of others were getting greatly harmed because she couldn't face those same people? I wouldn't blame her for wanting to save the people she loves though, that makes sense tbh... I guess maybe I meant that at the time it had come off as "nooo let's not kill people" as opposed to "nooo don't kill my family", which I guess I must've reasoned was less laudable because not caused by wanting to save everyone from this in general?

amethyst was the kid before steven and then was pushed out of that role sort of? shes a lot younger than the rest of the gems i think so she really is still just like. a kid/teenager. i definitely think amethyst and steven gaining more of a sibling relationship makes sense for them? like shes the older sibling. idk their dynamic is really interesting to me

If you haven't by now, it's worth looking up pictures of actual bismuth crystals. It's a weird and amazing substance.
Don't ever forget Roses sword was made to destroy the form but never the gem, and this was stated by it's maker
Did you guys know that the forge entrance looks just like bismuth's gem when it opened
So another fun look into the fandom at the time. People got hype when Bismuth finally came up. Because we see her gem bubble the first time Steven goes into Lions mane. And the distinctive shape/pattern of the gem made people guess early on that itd be Bismuth. And when we see Lapis's flashback to being put in the mirror, a lot of us (correctly) guessed that the gem who poofed Lapis was Bismuth (largely because of the weirdly specific design, we thought itd be an important gem. The rainbow dreads made us think it was gonna be Bismuth specifically).

i raised myself on this show, it aired as i started highschool and future ended as i finished, i was distant with my family and this show gave me all the lessons i really needed to become someone i love. watching you go through the show has been a really amazing experience, so thank you for sharing ♥

Season 3 is in my opinion, the best season of Steven Universe. Perfect 10/10, pretty consistantly great all the way through. Peridot and Lapis are great, Amethyst vs Jasper arc, Pearl development with her no longer resenting Greg, the mysteries behind Rose. It has the masterpiece Mr Greg, along with some of the other best episodes like Superwatermelon Island, Same Old World, Beach City Drift, Alone at Sea, Bismuth and Earthlings. All of the other episodes are great too. Overall just perfect.
Yo, I'm struggling like Pearl after that last episode
This part of season 3 is one of the best arcs of the show like obviously the best arcs tend to be when it’s gem related lore and characters and lord pink diamond is such an interesting character to say the least. The diamonds are such mysterious characters to this day so can’t wait for you to see the others

If you think about it Jasper is the most tragic character in the series. Literally a child soldier who has been brainwashed to believe in what's essentially eugenics. She believes her only reason for existing is to kill.

I actually would’ve liked if Amethyst went on an adventure with Jasper instead of becoming Smoky I feel it would’ve made a better story and give her character more depth when she inevitably had to accept she wasn’t perfect like a Ryuga and Kenta relationship from beyblade
As soon as I read that adventure bit I immediately thought of Kenta and Ryuga. Then I clicked "Read More" and you said it. I think it would've been cool but I like the introduction of Smoky better because it brings Steven and Amethyst closer together after Amethyst had been struggling with her insecurities because of Jasper. Besides, Amethyst belongs with the Crystal Gems. She doesn't really need a soul searching journey to have some character development.
SPOILER ALERT:
Oh my Gosh watching this scene after finishing the show is crazy. Noticing how Pearl immediately covered her mouth at the mention of the “shattering” of Pink Diamond. When he said that Rose killed her, the look in Pearls eyes because she knew she was the one that did it was indescribable.

I love Bismuth. The show didn't do quite enough to deconstruct why her argument was more than just 'giving us the best chance of success.' Steven's response to her is childish and reductive, but Bismuth's goal wasn't victory, it was revenge. The Breaking Point wasn't useful unless the opponent was unable to move and that's... an execution scenario, not a combat one. And why would shattering be more strategically advantageous than bubbling?
The Amethyst situation I believe is supposed to reflect how a lot of disabled kids feel growing up when they've always been told there's nothing wrong, that they can willpower their way anywhere, without acknowledging genuine barriers and developing strategies and resources to help.
Yeah, it was really pretty clumsy in the writing, I doubt they ended up meaning to construct a rhetorically insidious centrist argument about how a violent anti-fascist is as bad as a violent fascist. But that’s how it came off.
As a student of comparative political science, American history, and revolutionary literature, it really annoyed me.

Well Steven Universe's message is about restorative justice, rather than retribution or punishment. So I absolutely have no problem with the Diamonds being redeemed because that was what the show set out to do from the beginning. I wish the show had had more _time_ to dedicate to their slowly changing perspective and show their failings and slip ups along the way, but it did what it could in the time it had. Imperfect, but a good message about how it's never too late to be better. Because the characters are immortal you've got some troubling implications regarding colonialism and stuff but... still, good effort.
My problem with this episode specifically is that it doesn't quite position Bismuth's argument in context: That she's more about vengeance rather than truly having the best chance of winning. Shattering a gem is no different strategically from bubbling them, though admittedly there is a small chance of bubbled gems being freed.

Bismuth has a pretty low melting point (you can melt it in a pot on a stove) so that lava should have melted her lmao
Another plot hole: gems don't need air to survive so why is there an airlock on the moon base, and how did they get air up there? There's no air on the moon and they have no reason to waste time bringing air to the moon

This episode I believed Pearl shattered Pink. There was a lot of guilt in that gesture of hers, and I was pretty sure by now she was pink pearl.
Turns out I was sorta right?
It was pearl transformed into Rose just like I thought, and she was feeling guilt here…

I actually think Bismuth is in the right here, at least more than Rose. Having to kill someone is horrible, but war is horrible, and if you at least have an option to kill a few choice targets where you need to, that could help end the war much faster and avoid more suffering long-term. I don't think just going around shattering every enemy gem is a good move, but the tactical advantages of limited use of breaking points shouldn't be denied.
Rose's fight with Bismuth actually happened before she shattered Pink Diamond, so at the time that Rose said no to Bismuth using the breaking point, she hadn't shattered anyone.
Edit to add: I just remembered that you're much further ahead in the series now, so you didn't really need this explanation now, because you know more about what went down with Pink Diamond's shattering, and with Rose and Bismuth's fight. I'll leave it up anyway though.
