i wanna shed light on what rebecca sugar calls "the princess gauntlet" when steven goes back to homeworld; he lives in a tower, his clothes are made by tiny "things" (aka mice), he has two evil step sisters and a evil godmother, and then the ball-- all of these things are a reference to popular disney princess tropes, but in this context, they just seem... off... yeah, anyway, just thought that was interesting

Lapis saying "I've felt worse" was instantly added to my top 10 moments of the entire show!!
White’s dialogue is really interesting, from “you gave everyone a scare”, “did you get everything out of your system” and to “everyone’s so relieved”. It implies that White knew all along that Pink was alive and she see’s the rebellion as nothing more than Pink’s little outbursts and her being extremely dismissive shows how little White took pink serious.
Edit: also when you think more about it, it makes the rebellion and the fact that Blue and yellow have been grieving for years, even more grim, the fact that white knew all along, but never said or stopped anything, shows that she cared more about teaching a lesson and telling pink “I told you so” when she came back home, rather than the fact that thousands of gems lost their lives and ended up corrupted.
Yeah (spoiler alert) l don’t know how she was forgiven honestly. She made thousands of gems and the diamonds suffer and for what?? Her “Perfect Empire”? I think the show kinda screwed up on that one
It's confirmed in _Steven Universe: End of an Era_ that White did indeed knew about Pink being Rose.
But remember, she still went with the corruption spell hoping it would kill her, as a way to remind the other gems who's boss. Because she doesn't actually care that she was a diamond or not. That's because she stood up to her authority, and like Hopper said about the ants in "A bug's life", she believed, you let one gem (diamond or not) stand up to them than they ALL might stand up. The diamonds (Yellow, Blue and White) are bigger, but all those puny little gems out number them 100 to 1, and if they ever figured that out, there goes there way of life, it's not about colonies, it's about keeping the gems in line, that's why she still made Yellow try to destroy the Earth, even if it was given to Pink who was not dead.

I still cannot belive that we are so close to the end of this show. I feel like we are just started a few weeks ago and there is still plenty of content, but we are already here, at the end of S5. All those Sundays I was looking forward to some SU content and it soon will be over...
Yeah the show had this impression of being long bc of the enormous hiatus it had years ago but it is really short (and i suspect it was like this bc Rebecca wanted to put ruby and sapphire wedding and CN cut it short)

Fun Fact: they had to cancel the show earlier than expected (and have tried multiple times in the past) because of ruby and saphire kissing on the episode of the wedding because from the beggining of the show, Cartoon Network wasnt okay with ruby and sapphire being together due to them both being females so the creator of the show, Rebecca Sugar, stated that gems have no gender even though the majority of gems take the form of a female. Some countries even edited a mustache on ruby to make her look like a guy because being gay is still considered wrong. Cartoon Network told Rebecca sugar that she was not allowed to show Ruby and Saphire kissing on the episoide of their wedding but she still did so anyways causing her show to be canceled earlier than scheduled. The finale of the show was rushed due to the little time she had to finish it. Thanks to Steven Universe and Rebecca Sugar, other cartoons started to show more gay relationships to show that they support not only the LGBT+ community, but Rebecca Sugar too because of the struggles she went through to keep the show going for how long it lasted.
Do you know how sad it is for a show to be canceled just because of gay characters, it makes me so angry how there are SO MANY people out there who still stick with a 1930s mindset, some even 1800s. It makes me even sadder to see children promoting that exact same hate that their ancestors made. It's really sad and ignorant!

Yeah this is especially with my parents today. As soon as they see something like a homosexual relationship, they instantly hate on it and sometimes stop watching. I literally don’t know what’s so wrong with it at all. It’s not me nor is it you so why is it a issue? Why is it so unnatural and disgusting? These questions will never get any clear answer. Being gay is exactly the same as being straight or Bi. No difference at all. Not only that, but others could complain how one character looks like. That’s why l’m avoiding showing them Demon slayer cause they might say something about Inosuke and l don’t wanna hear that.
Important thing about Pearls; they tend to have the same gem placement as the gem they serve. Yellow Pearl & Blue Pearl both have their gems on their chests, just like Yellow & Blue Diamond have theirs. Check out our friend Pearl though; even though she served Pink Diamond in the past, their gems and their placements don’t match.
But if you look at the White Pearl that kidnapped Steven on Homeworld, her gem placement matches perfectly with Pink Diamond’s gem, now in Steven’s possession. There’s been a presumed theory that our Pearl and this “White Pearl” were swapped at some point when Pink Diamond got careless, because the pearls typically have their personalities reflect the master they serve.
Yellow Pearl is very blunt like Yellow, and Blue Pearl is very melancholy like Blue. If you remember back from the early seasons, Pearl has always been very orderly and strict. There’s a reason for that, if you think about who her former master might’ve been…And due to the flashback sequence at 19:55, Pink Diamond’s childish antics with this Pearl, a trade happened.
And we see later on that pearls can and commonly were reset or set to "factory" condition. So our pearl having no memory before her time with Pink makes sense because she was probably reset when she was given to Pink
I remember when I watched Reunited for the first time, I was sitting by some friends playing D&D and when Ruby and Sapphire kissed I yelled "THEY KISSED ON THE MOUTH!!!"
Edit: on the end song (Love Like You), Rebecca has said it could be from anyone to anyone (For example: As a Larsadie shipper, I can see it as a song from Lars to Sadie) but it is generally theorized by most of the fandom that it's a Rose song to Steven/Greg/anyone in her life.
6:50 There’s a plot point here that’s never tackled, but in one of the first three seasons, Lapis told Steven the story of how her gem had be cracked and how she was trapped in Earth for thousands of years. In a flashback sequence, it seemed to show our Bismuth being the one that poofed her! You can tell because that Bismuth’s gem is in the same placement as ours. The flashback was before we were introduced to Bismuth in Season 4. This point is never addressed in the show, but I’m wondering if it was touched on in some other form of Steven Universe media like a comic or something. Anyone here in the comments know?

An intresting thing to note, all Gems of the same type are voiced by the same person. All Pearls are voiced by Deedee Magno Hall, All Rubys are voiced by
Charlyne Yi, All Amethysts are voiced by Michaela Dietz. But if you pay attention, White Diamonds Pearl is voiced by White Diamonds voice actor Christine Ebersole.
I always interpreted 'Familiar' a little differently from the literal. Familiar because he's sort of losing himself in Pink's echo. He may not have all her memories, but there's so much pressure to take on the role of his mother it's easy to fall right back into old habits and forget to be 'Steven.'
The way he sings it seems wistful but also a bit remorseful as well. Like he's not quite sure how to feel about this situation's familiarity at first. He only really moves away from this more somber tone as he realizes he could utilize his experience with the similar situations to try and fix it.
Also this song points out a bit of an unfortunate correlation between their living situations; while they were both loved, they were also both neglected, raised to unrealistic expectations, and suffered overall from how they were raised. So while there's some niceness to the familiarity of it all, it's also cruddy when you stop to think about the full scope of it.

I don't know about the other diamonds, but Rose was known to only be able to heal with her tears, or at least that's what I think. Even if she could use other fluids, I think that scene, where you can see a peddle being brought to life was made specifically to show how the others were also made, from tears, on the same spot.

25:34 In the episode Steven creates the Watermelon Stevens, he told them to think about the sacrifice baby melon made "for all of us" creating the religious hugging society. And when they fought Malichite, Steven controlled a watermelon to convince the others to help fight, creating this warrior society. I like the idea that maybe this episode created a colonizing islander society that wear leaves on their heads.
Seeing how distracted you were by White Diamond’s appearance gives me a better idea of why so many people didn’t actually understand her character. If only we’d had a full Season 6.
I always interpreted the song at the end as Rose singing about Greg. Honestly i feel it is more so a song about self doubt one has about themselves (rather true or not) when viewing the ones they love, regardless of what type of love that is Familial, Romantic, etc.
One could say the song is Rose's feelings about anyone who loved her, The diamonds, The crystal gems, Greg, and her soon to be son.

I remember the first time white diamond and her pearl showed up I was absolutely shocked and scared. The fact that we had to wait so long for the diamond days arc after legs from here to home world aired was so painful
When Connie saw everybody down and knew her only option was to rush pink diamond, with what she thinks is a diamond shattering sword, she became my favorite character.

I didn't think a show could have so many good songs. I could listen to a whole soundtrack of these personally.
From the viewpoint of the Diamonds (Yellow and White especially, but even Blue) seeing what they regard as Pink Diamond fusing with organic Connie would be about the same level as watching Pink doing the nasty with Lion.
WD's Pearl was formerly Pink Diamond's original Pearl, who obviously became too attached to her mistress (for example, conspiring with Pink to deceive Yellow's spying). As she speaks only with WD's voice, it was plain to me that "White Pearl" had absolutely no free will of her own, and was merely a puppet device. In caste-bound Gem society, it would be impossible for a mere Pearl to deputize for a Diamond, so her presence at the ball was really White Diamond's in all respects other than physicality.
I’m sure others have already pointed this out but a lot of factors contribute to how unsettling White Diamond’s first appearance truly is.
The buildup is certainly a factor. While the Diamond symbol has always shown White, we’ve never actually had any mention of her up until now. The first time is in the episode after the wedding. But how Yellow and Blue talk about her, how as they head toward Homeworld even Yellow is nervous, it does such a good job of building a bit of dread.
Then there’s White’s Pearl. Not only does she appear to have been injured (an interesting feat since Gems’ physical bodies are conjured from their mind so the implications of her form having a noticeable crack is… not great), but she’s also not voiced by the same VA as the rest of the Pearls (Deedee Magno Hall), but as we learn in a second, she’s voiced by the same VA as White Diamond (Christine Ebersole). Again, the implications here… and Christine does a fantastic job sounding inhuman, without any real emotion.
And then the actual meeting. True to her name, White Diamond is coated in nothing but monochrome colors. There’s no change in her tone throughout her entire interaction with Steven, and she doesn’t even seem to realize that Pink/Rose isn’t who is standing before her. She sounds like a patronizing parent and treats “Pink” like a kid who just threw a little tantrum for a couple days and then came back home and learned her lesson. And not, you know, someone who they thought was shattered for a few thousand years after a terrible war. She doesn’t even let Steven get more then a couple words out between her sentences.
Lastly it’s how her Pearl responded to events at the party, how she seemed to be acting as her surveillance, how displeased White Pearl seemed.
Like, it’s all such a great introduction to this character.
Being part of the fandom during the time these episodes were coming out was a great experience.
The amount of hype and theories alone was fantastic.
Just an fyi, on watermelon island, the bald Steven statue is a reference to when baby melon sacrificed himself, showing peace. The other statue with the markings is a reference to when Steven encouraged the melons to help fight Malachite
Fun fact, because of the news of the cancellation, people had to wait months between Legs to Homeworld and the next episode. Audience at that time literally just got the biggest cliff hanger in the entire show, as well as waited MONTHS knowing that the show had a high chance of just getting dropped even with Rebecca's pleas. It was agonizing, but hey, the fanfics were on fire at that time.
Honestly no matter what you say about Steven universe and Rebecca sugar she gave us lgbt rep and ever since then it’s been growing in animation with Steven universe being the first show to have a gay wedding and full on kiss.
The music of these last few episodes is just top tier. Escapism holds a place in my heart, always. It always gets me in the feels.
Future is pretty much another season to me, so there's more to come!

Something I noticed a while ago but just bringing it up now, is how white pearl says, “Pink Diamond’s presence is required.” While the other two pearls say, “My diamond requests your presence.”

Thank you for the content Krysta, and if I'm correct before the movie came out there was talk of canceling Steven Universe so some things were "rushed", and the Kiss at the wedding was censored in other countries and some places a whole episode just wouldn't be aired because of their relationship.

The wedding! One of my favorite moments in the show… the pink Diamond reveal to Yellow and Blue..l and White Diamond’s crazy looking self… seriously, she still creeps me out to this day, like…. WHY ARE YOU LIKE THAT?! WHY DO YOU GOTTA LOOK LIKE THAT?!

Fun fact: The two different statues of watermelon steven are references to two other episodes where watermelon stevens appeared. The statue where the watermelon steven is hanging his hand outward was the first episode they appeared where baby watermelon steven sacrificed himself. The second statue is a callback to the episode where steven transfers his mind into a watermelon steven to help alexandrite defeat malachite. In this, episode you see him gather a group of warriors and preparing them for battle through a speach with a pose in the second statue we see in this episode.
One detail of the wedding is that the creators made sure of putting RUBY in a dress and Sapphire on a suit because many places changed ruby to a boy to not show two girls kissing
"Love like you" (the end of the episode song you were analysing) is probably my favorite of the whole Steven Universe series. It is the reason I bought an ukelele and start studying music. And I never saw that interpretation of the lyrics. I like your take on the meaning and I'm loving follow you through one of my dearest cartoons. Excited for the next episode

27:12. OMG I FORGOT ABOUT THIS PART. So the song that plays here for the remainder of the episode is called “Escapism.” A demo of this that Rebecca Sugar sang was leaked months before this episode, along with a series of other leaks for episodes. At the time, all we had were Sugar’s vocals and the guitar chords, but we didn’t know which character would be singing this song.
There was this bingo card leaked describing all major plot points that would become episodes in Season 5 that leaked between hiatuses of the different arcs. Pearl & Lapis had major episodes during Season 5, and due to their characterization, it was heavily believed that either one of them would sing this song, because of the lyrics.

In Pearl’s case, we’d received rumors that we’d see her in her original servant form, so the lyrics suggested a theory that we’d see how Pearl felt about her life before meeting/serving Rose/Pink Diamond. The song would then be Pearl’s Escapism of how much she wanted to run away from Homeworld and start a new life, and how Pink could offer her that life. Ultimately, that rumor was disproven with us seeing the flashbacks in “A Single Pale Rose,” but no new song with it.
In Lapis’ case, leaks had already gone around that she would likely flee from Steven and the gang one more time before allying with them. The song was believed to be Lapis grieving her lost time in the mirror once more and maybe her fleeing Earth one more time because of how she hadn’t fully adjusted to her new life, or due to the Diamonds coming to Earth. Ultimately this idea was also chased too, since while Lapis did flee it was only to the Moon-base to watch over Steven, Peridot and the Crystal Gems. And then of course she got her own song, That Distant Shore, so that threw that theory out the water too.
It was still so amazing to see how many theories took shape with just that little bit of information we had to work with. You have to remember, Steven Universe didn’t release new episodes on a week to week basis like other Cartoon Network properties. It released in like 2-4 group episode bombs, MONTHS apart, so this theory took root for nearly a year before we finally got to see and hear which episode the song finally played. This being a song for Stevonnie as Steven tries to mentally (and quite literally) escape and distance himself from the Diamonds and Homeworld was the last idea in anyone’s mind. It’s so great to see someone’s reaction to groups of the episodes and arcs with the info fresh in their mind from a couple minutes ago, instead of months like many of us had to deal with.
So uhhhhh, we do agree we need to get Krysta on Adventure time next right?

Blue and Yellow (and White to a lesser extent since her thematic role is more general) during these episodes are really excellent analogues for old family members struggling to understand a family member who has come out as gay or transitioned. Since they can't understand the new person they just try to fit them into the old roles they recognize and it makes everything worse
Fun fact: the melon stevens made a whole religion about baby melon steven and a tribe for the melon steven that fought malachite

Something about the wedding episode: Countries that weren't fond of same sex couples had been trying to hide the queerness of Garnet by implying that Ruby was a guy and Sapphire was a girl- so Sugar took a stand against those people by putting Ruby in the dress and Sapphire in the suit.

I just love that they had the balls to put the fight against Blue and Yellow Diamond in the wedding episode -- so that places like Russia couldn't censor the lesbian wedding without butchering the plot. Pretty sure that Sapphire is the one in the pants for similar reasons, since some countries' localizations translate Ruby as male. Also if you ever catch a glance of the world map in the episodes where they're on the moon base looking at the globe, you'll notice that russia itself is missing too. Russia canceled SU, so SU canceled russia.
