I’ve been binging this series, but the rubber band gun in this one really made me smile. My grandfather made one for me when I used to stay with them in Georgia over the summer, traced the pattern from a water gun I got at a dollar store (that looked exactly like a colt python, back when you could buy that sort of thing!!!), and I played with that rubber band gun more than I ever did the water gun!

Kids are way easier to make than these projects are.
Another easy game to make and play is the Royal Game of Ur. As a woodworker, the board is easy enough to make, the rules of the most basic form of the game are easy for kids to learn, and it's a really fun game. You can use D4 dice if you have them, or you can use coins, since they have the same probability. One of the most popular games in the world for 3000 years.
And speaking of the oldest games in the world, there's also Mancala, which is easy to make, and you play with beans or pebbles or whatnot. Google the rules, it's fun to play, and again, popular for many thousands of years.

Something you guys might find useful: if you need a mortise chisel (or generally just a thin chisel) but can’t get one because delivery times are beyond shocking right now, get a flat head screwdriver and some sandpaper and sand the end to a point before honing. Don’t forget to ventilate or wear a dust mask (if you can find one right now) while sanding. It doesn’t take too long and can get pretty decent results.
That's a cool tip! I've done that before in a pinch. Depending on what you're trying to do, you may not even need to sand it down. Be careful about smacking it with a hammer though as screwdriver shafts can splinter and cause injury.
You can also do a similar thing with a Phillips screwdriver to make a makeshift punch or awl. Just sand or grind the tip as round as possible.
Hey Rex, when i was 6 jears old i started woodworking with my grandfather in his litte woodshop, everytime i visited him.
He build anything i needed back in the days for me, boxes, chairs, toys and many more.
Till today (30 years later) i love woodworking and making toys like yours. It's realy relaxing and working with kids is great. Best thing is their little smile when they realize that they did it with their own hands.

My late grandad and I made that when I was a kid in a very simple way. We made it like a slingshot. We took a scrap piece of flat wood. Glued a chothes peg {clothes pin} at one end. And a nail with an elastic band to the other end. When we pulled the elastic band to the peg; it left small gaps that was enough to put some stones or anything in it to slingshot at targets. By releasing the tension in the peg.
This is what I love about America, we all come together in times of need. We all figure out how we can help out our friends and neighbors. School by me will be shut down for the rest of the year. As I am figuring her sched out my nine year old daughter wants some shop time daily!!! Rex you rocked it!!!
Every time I see videos where parents get kids engaged in making things, it brings me so much joy! Tiny present and future creators!
Even my soon to be three year old loves using a brace! She’s a traditionalist and eschews power tools.
Thanks Rex for the video! I just picked up 4 pallets and ripping them apart to prep for my kids coming next week. The weather is nice and my balcony is prepped for making some wooden projects with my kids aged 6 and nearly 8. We probably will not have much of a result, but spending the time with you kids, doing stuff with your hands and enjoying it, even though it is just making holes, hitting nails or just sawing stuff, this is the time they will remember. I learned more from woodworking in the last couple of weeks, since I found this channel, than on the other 6 months since I started research about it (an watched a ton of videos on youtube).
Now, to complete the the 'game', I can see that woodworking for humans is more than a title, you are an amazing guy!

A slightly more advanced project (both in building skills and gameplay) for older kids is an Othello board. I used to have one (didn't make it; I bought it traveling abroad somewhere). Basically the same as the Tic Tac Toe board, but expand it to an 8x8 grid of holes and paint 64 pins white on one end and black on the other. Pro tip: the looser the holes, the easier to flip the pins with your fingertips. On mine, the board as also the lid of a shallow box to hold all the pins. Come to think of it, I just might have to make myself a new one...

Man, I love your channel. I went from watching one random video (not even sure how I found it), to binging all your videos, to becoming a patron. And it's because of content exactly like this. We came because of the awesome projects, stayed because of the fun/happy attitude, and support because of the wholesomeness (is that even a word?). I've been using it, I do not work in an office by with the wife and kids home we have done more house stuff. I have been doing a major reduction to time on the computer and online. I'm breaking away from caffeine and working on getting to sleep and waking up earlier. I hope that when I come out of this we will have a clean house with some painted rooms, we will have spent a lot of time together and I'll have broken a bad habit and gotten work into a good one.......The time with the kids has been fun so far. Also I think we are going to bake the tick tac toe board from here and then make a little trebuchet that can throw treats for the dog to catch. He's good at catching things and that sounded fun

I’ll have to make these with my daughter soon. Right now we are about to start on a poplar fairy house she wants with all kinds of tiny furniture. Should be fun! I love bringing her out to the shop with me on the weekends and it’s one of her favorite things to do too. She loves helping with just about anything. She’s super clean freak to the max so she picked all the cracks out in the concrete last weekend with a stub of TIG welding rod.
Rex, you’re a cracking fella! Your knowledge, your skills, your explanations and patience are first rate...but it’s you and how you are that makes it all sing.
It might be fun to figure out how to put two independent triggers on that band flinger. One in front of the other like an old-timey double barrel.
I agree, but the clothespins are easy and independent.
@@RexKrueger you could tie them in to the clothes pins even. You'd have to make some sort of lever system. On one hand, I don't think it would be particularly difficult. On the other, it isn't exactly a necessary modification. It might be fun to do if you get reeeeaally bored though.

I assembled a shed with these plan [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ]. The guidelines were clear and simple to execute. Indeed, even an amateur can have the capacity to construct quite fast using this plan. I'm glad I purchased the plan. It additionally spared me much cost.?
Reminds me of the rubber band wands my friends and I made with a clothespin attached to a 3/4 PVC tube with epoxy. I think I dialed the wow factor up to 11 when I put an end cap on the back and dropped a laser pointer down the front.
Index finger straight and in line with the barrel... Like its an ingrained habit. We just learned something else about Rex. 😁

Made one of those rubber band guns when I was a kid. Didn’t look as nice as yours though. I was inspired by a Readers Digest story “Shootout at the Red Horse Barn”. Good times.

Rubber band guns. That brings back memories. Mine were scaled up to rifle size and used strips of inner tube instead of rubber bands. They also used a different trigger so you could shoot rocks instead of rubber bands. The original wild west slingshot. Looking back on the crazy things I did it was probably a miracle that I survived childhood with everything intact.

i think most board games could be done... othello, chess, shoots and ladders, hungry hungry hippos, monopoly, candyland, risk, cards against humanity, just google board games.
guns, cars, tractors, trucks, trailers... or just a bird house or wooden tools to play in the dirt... shovels, etc.
And how many of them have YOU made?
Can you make a video about lathe chisel sharpening jig - both how to sharpen different chisels and how to make the jig?

Yo-yos are another fun thing to make if you have a lathe and a moderately heavy hardwood. They take a little practice, but are simple to make after a while.

My Teacher wife will be glad to give you links to learning channels.. the public schools have a large percentage of families without computer or internet so public schools don't provide homework or online learning. Mrs Buzz is a catholic school teacher and they are continuing the curriculum that the students have about 3 hours a day work. Tests are just beginning to be posted on her online webpage.
This makes me so excited for when my little man is old enough to help me in the shop.
There is a modified version of Tic-Tac-Toe. Each person is given 6 pieces. The pieces should be "nestled".
2 small
2 medium
3 large
If you have a token larger than the opponent, you can place that token on top of your opponent's token. Is is commercially available, and requires a different strategy then regular Tic-Tac-Toe.
I would personally make my tokens from various bottle caps, if possible.

A checker board project would be a great cutting and shooting board exercise. Glue the squares to a backer board for stability.

My kids are way too old for these things... but they are just big kids at heart. Sorta like their dad, really. Gonna have to make a couple of the rubber band guns to make their day. Hmm, maybe one for No. 1 Son’s girlfriend and The Daughter’s husband, too - can’t leave them defenceless!

If you wanted a more traditional trigger mechanism, you could make a trigger, pin it in the center with a nail, and then attach a rubber band from the top of the trigger to the bottom of the clothespin. Great ideas, as usual!
