Is the Smith & Wesson 5.7 the Best On the Market?

- Last week I had the opportunity to put 150 rounds through the new Smith & Wesson M&P 5.7. Here are my initial thoughts.
Smith & Wesson provided me with this M&P 5.7 at no cost to review.

Federal Premium provided me with ammunition for the review.

I LOVE MY S&W 5.7
I just recently purchased mine and put the 407k Halosun red dot on it. Hit the range yesterday and it is now my favorite pistol in my arsenal.
I usually load new magazines and let them sit for a few days and let the springs take a bit of a set, prevents a lot of new magazine troubles. Good review 👍
That’s a good idea.
A lot of the ar-reloading type pistols I have are usually like this when loading them. If they overlap even a little the hole clip will jam. Never shot 5.7 but I already preordered one because I’ve heard things about the ruger and the one I wanted didn’t have a safety.
Loaded mine to 20 on both mags , shot as soon as I Loaded. No flaws or feeding problems like some people say
Have the Ruger 57 and really like it. The M&P 57 has caught my eye. You are the only reviewer I’ve watched who pointed out the magazine concern. I appreciate that, forewarned means being prepared. The magazine assist that you showed is interesting and different from after market one I was able to pick up for the Ruger. The barrel fascinates me and I like the better Red Dot set up.
excellent review Eva hope to see more of your reviews on more firearms
I bought the Ruger 57 pistol and carbine last year. I may have to add this one to my collection, I love this round! Thanks Ava and Peaches!
Excellent review. Thanks.
Nice explanation of the inner workings of the Fire arm . I kind of like the idea of having hand gun that fires the same rounds as my rifle . Blessed be
Excellent Review 👌 Excited to see new innovative design. I would enjoy seeing more of this 🙃
Thanks! Will do!
I think the M&P 5.7 is worth taking a look at. Thanks for the great review.
Got to handle one of these yesterday. Felt pretty good for a 5.7 (can't avoid a certain amount of girth front to back with that cartridge). Sights, optics cut, and ergos seem well sorted out. Definitely wouldn't mind having one!
I had it for a week before I was able to get to the range so I broke in the mags at home. I loaded one and left it in the 5.7 for a couple days. I ejected the mag and noticed loose rounds falling out. So I cycled through loading and unloading both mags. When I went to the range I had no issues whatsoever. Definitely needed that load assist piece.
Breaking in the magazine to make the magazine reliable before range time is great advice. You are very fair in your assessment and this is a great review. Love your dog by the way. So cute.
Thank you!! I want to be fair with all my reviews, regardless of who I’m sponsored by. I’m sure my sponsors appreciate it though. Also, Peaches says thanks. 😉
do you like georgia tbilisi batumi?do you like russia moscow?
7:26 this is good info for buyers - I'm probably going to get one of these myself, and now I know to fully load and unload the new mags a few times before taking it to the range. Flexing the mag springs through their full range of compression and extension is a cheap way to break them in, with no rounds wasted. TYVM
Thanks for another great video Ava (and Peaches) 😂. I always enjoy your gun reviews. I voted for you numerous times for the Gundies. Best I can do. Good luck! 🔫❤️
Thank you so much!! I truly appreciate it.
... Ava. Those Federal loads are FMJ. The Fiocchi loads are JHP's (the black tip covers the hole you would normally see with FMJ's). The polymer/polymer-carbonate tip is designed to not only improve external/terminal ballistic performance, but it's primary use is to rapidly drive the jacket back to ensure fragmentation and to prevent clogging from foreign material upon impact.
Ahh, I feel dumb for not realizing that. 🤦🏻♀️
Informative, throughout review!
Thank you!
I've owned the M&P40 and 380 EZ Performance Center which were plagued by magazine-induced feeding errors out of the box, which reduced my faith in their automatics as a whole - despite their overall positive reputation. I want to give their 5.7 a chance, so I appreciate the heads-up on the mag break-in.
That’s too bad. My 380 ez has had over 1000 rounds through it, not one malfunction. I wonder if it’s the luck of the draw on the mags that come with the gun ?
@@GlennCJudah I think you’re right, regarding the EZ. I saw that some owners resorted to scoring the followers in their mags to fix the same problem I had (frequent last round stovepipes) but I opted to trade-in the pistol in lieu of going dremel-happy without guaranteed results, or going through the whole warranty service dance. I really wanted to love that EZ, damn it!
A few mags through it. And spoiler it's amazing. Their best pistol.
Not to mention all the issues their new 10mm M&P pistols
Excellent video, darn it now I want one with 4 extra mags
great video thanks ❤
Direct gas impingement in a gun that small is pretty neat. Should definitely help accuracy a lot.
The FN took me over a year to break in. Had to work the slide. The load is just too light. Very excited about the M&P!
I don't have a S&W. Yet. This is going to be my next new gift to me. Soon as I can find one that is. Thanks. Although I like your channel I didn't need to be sold on this.
Treat yo self!
Just saw this old review And it comports with others I've read, especially on the earlier magazine issues. Bought 1, but have yet to shoot it.
Cool video and informative tky
Glad you enjoyed it
The Fiocchi ammo you showed appears to be a JHP round with a ballistic tip. The federal is an FMJ. Massive difference in the effect on target.
That barrel design is next level
Agree!
Thank you 😊
Good video thanks
Thank you!
Got to check one of these out a few days ago at Scheels(probably the only FFL in North Texas that had one). Like what I've seen so far. Looking forward to renting it!
Oh nice! I just started working with Scheels. Cool company!
@Ava Flanell That's cool! Their ammo prices are reasonable too! There's a Scheels in Colorado?
I believe the black tip is a smokeless round. An it suppose to help reduce build up in the gun. Effectively not needing cleaned as often.
8:19 you could also just load and unload them with live ammo a couple times. Might scratch up the cases a little but better than shooting a couple mags while fighting malfunctions.
I ran into that issue with Magpul on AR 15 didn't realize break-in. For magazines was a thing.
Just found the channel, I think I'm an Ava fan
Ava is making me want to give S&W a second chance. Never liked their guns but this looks good
I recently had someone at the range shoot my M&P 2.0 and the Competitor. They hated S&W prior, but they were surprised by how much their guns improved. You might be surprised as well. 😊
Just got one yesterday! Had the same issues right off the bat...failed ejection and also would fail to put the next round into battery. Super disappointing because when it shot, it was amazing but then it would jam. After about 75 rounds later and a lot of $$$, it seemed to finally break in and work fine. Going to give it another try today. Hoping the issues are done because it shoots amazing! Really don't want this gen 1 to be a fail!
Did u clean before its 1st trip ? I did and ran 300 with 0 issues topped off mags shot elite ammon t6b s4 Vanguard black fangs , fn blue tips , even federal eagle ran great and that ammo was iffy in NY ruger n rock, fn ran it ok too ..
I really want one of these!
Treat yo self!
Just load and unload the mag by hand to loosen it up. Or use a paint stick to compress the spring a bunch of times. There's reason to shoot live ammo if you are having issues with spring pressure.
You look like Dr Shelly Chiropractor. You too should do a video together, let her crack your back. Views through the roof. Great content btw.
Only mags I have ever HAD to use the speed loader. I really bruised up the finger tips after 5 mags. Speed loader is very important.
I have one and love it, it just lacks in support. No holsters for it with a light, no magazine pouch, no rear slide replacement, still trying to figure out what type of front sight the gun uses so I can install a fiber sight.
I turn off my red dot and just use my steel X/S tritium optic height sights on my own M&P 2.0 4.625 inch barrel 10mm with no safety lever. I like that more when qualifying for my open carry security guard license. I use a Holosun 508T red dot on my 10mm.
Mag issue is common. Some people even just loaded, then unloaded the bullets like 5 times and seemed to fix the issue.
I was only able to get the FN MK2 Five Seven in Cali and I love it, but ammo is $50 a box where I live, so I don't shoot it as much.
I need one
my concern is that rotating barrel gets a lot of friction with the slide and over time, I would be worried that there could be some wear that might affect function. Also, don't want to be cleaning out a gas port every 200 rounds. This gun seems amazing but I think I'm going to opt for the PSA Rock.
You worry too much ;)
Been wanting to get this for my gf because of the low recoil. What did you think of the grip feel and trigger reach?
I'm gonna wait till they come out with the silver slide version.
Have you shot it with a can yet? I’ve read a few reports of baffle/endcap strikes, presumably attributed to the rotating barrel system and the way the suppressor mounts. Not sure how widespread this is, so was just curious.
I’ll have my gun tomorrow, so I’ll try it out myself as well.
2:24 Awwwww! Hey there lil puppers! 🐕🌮 Yo quiero taco bell?
I opted for the Ruger package LC Carbine an 57 pistol. Common mags. Am going to try the Smith when one gets local. Expensive ammo to waste at the range.
How do you like the Ruger?
@@AvaFlanell so far I like them both. The carbine is a blast to shoot.
Springs break in under use, load and empty the mag to break in faster.
It’s optic ready for a 507k and the sights but they arent suppressor height. Maybe they claim they are, but I can hardlyyyyyyyy co witness with my dot. They barely poke up and into the view of my red dot, not sure why they wouldn’t make them a slight bit taller that kinda bugs me. That and how tight the mags fit into the gun.
Eva, to break in a stiff mag load and unload the mag (safely) a couple times. Don’t waste the ammo.
It’s Ava
Did the malfunctions stop long term? My m&p 5.7 did the same with the first magazine through it. I'm looking at buying some more ammo to shoot soon
It’s only a matter of time s&w drops a rifle in 5.7
Haha that smile 😊
I also had problems with the magazine jamming and not feeding. S&W replaced the magazines I had the same problem. The issue was the ammo. This gun will NOT work with the Federal ammo. I have had no problems with F&N at all. The Federal will work if I only load 6 or 7 rounds in the magazine. Any more than that and it jams.
My 507k does not fit on my smith and Wesson 5.7. Screws that come with the optic are not the right size. How are you guys mounting the optic? What size screws are being used?
On my shield plus performance center the 13 round mag will not seat even after 200 rounds through it. So, for me it's just a 12 round mag.
Ruger got better grips and sights and threaded barrel now too but think I like the m&p better idk 🤔, wish 57 ammo wasn't so high
You go, Pewie Vuitton
Lol
Do you think if you leave the mag loaded for a couple of days or more the mag would lossen up a little? Ive had to do this with shield arms mags for the glock 43x. just a idea. Oh and im going to buy one of these for sure. Like you said i think they hit it out of the park.
That’s not a bad idea.
Glock should make a 5.7
They will….
I don't know about best, but it's the best for the price. And with the $500-600 you save not going with the FN, you might even be able to afford a whole box of 5.7 ammo.
where are you finding ammo for 16 cents a round?
I watched an extensive comparison of 5.7 to 9mm, and wish I could remember exactly why (it was performance-related), but the reviewer concluded he was going to stay with his 9 mm pistols. The lower recoil impulse and higher magazine capacity of the faster 5.7 round is appreciated, but evidently the 9 mm packs a usefully bigger punch.
Oh, I’m sure 9mm has better ballistics. What I like about 5.7 the most is how lightweight it is and that it can fit more rounds in a mag. It’s great if SHTF and you can only take what you can carry.
There is always a larger round, I usually carry .380 so I don't care about 9mm unless I carry it, lol. Shot placement is more important than caliber. 5.7 penetrates effectively and tumbles like a .223.
Difference between S&W and Glock? Innovation!
Is "innovation" a jamming gun? You can have it.
I can't get over that huge ass gap between the slide and frame. Must be a S&W thing
Shadow Systems DR920 War Poet pistol. Best on the market in my opinion.
Yeah…buts it not in 5.7…so what’s your point?
PEACHES THE SUPER DOGGIE!
YAY!!
Just got mine i like it but im getting used to that hump on the back of the grip
On the M&P?
Have you had a chance to put some rounds thru the RUGER-5.7? Your assessment would be welcome.
I could watch her give an hours long, detailed breakdown of an air fryer.
Lmfao
First !
Why put a suppressor on it? I don't understand
I always wanted to get into 5.7 but my hands are too small to comfortably wrap my hands around the grip. How much smaller is this grip compared to the FN?
Hmm, it’s fairly similar because of the shape of the ammo.
@@AvaFlanell
Fair. Thank you for answering.
@@AvaFlanell Yeah, I was surprised that it didn't look larger in your hands. But then, I don't know if you're 5'3" or 5'10"...just looked like it wasn't too big for your hands.
I’m going with my Ruger over the M&P.
The 5.7x28 is a hand-held flamethrower. If you're using it in low-light scenarios.... get some sunglasses lol.
No light accessory needed 🤷🏻♀️
did you notice any heat problems being a gas operating gun?... did it get hot shooting rapidly
I put 150rds through the gun in like 45 mins. It was hot, but nothing unusual.
Damn you are primary a M&P consumer 🤔 I have a 10mm by S&W and love it, but I’m not putting all of my eggs into S&W
I’m sponsored by S&W.
@@AvaFlanell thought as much. That’s great tho! They’re definitely a trusted brand. Tell them to come out with a conversion kit for the 10mm M&P. 😊
Jefferson county police department Can i buy one
You can manually load and unload the magazine several times without even putting it in the gun
Nice review! too bad 5.7X28mm ammo is a little too pricy to be practical.
AAC is in stock regularly now at 60¢ a round.
I definitely want to hit that 5.7 😎🥂💣💣💣💣💥💥💥💥💥
The. barrel is NOT threaded. The shroud that the gas-operated barrel fits into IS what is threaded. That’s important if you live where threaded barrels are “prohibited”.
I have the Ruger and PSA Rock. I like the Rock better.
❤😊❤😊😊❤suuuuuper look 😊❤😊❤😊❤
Nice 👍🏽 gun
The real question is Peaches partner Herb or Cream? lol
So How much did you pay with tax about $700 I’m guessing ?
Just got one for $635 shipped at Brownells.
The mags are awfullll to load. I just traded to this pistol and don’t have the speed loader 😑 Other than that it is a 10/10. Seems like something John Wick would use 😂
The slide lock is not ambidextrous
Soy fanático de MP pero esta pistola 5.7 no me convence. Espero un poco más .
AvA 👋🤙👍🙏👋
Technically it’s not on the market yet. It’s not available from any distributer. Haven’t seen any in gun stores or online!
It was available on Gun Broker yesterday 😂
-@fist... !!!! Heyyy beautifu huhuhu...?!!!
Maybe if you load, and unload the magazines a few times you wouldn't have to waste the rounds breaking in the magazine.
That might work.
Should work out of the box.
I don’t need a firearm that jams after one round. I make trotline weights out of them.😂😂😂
It was just the first mag and then it ran flawlessly. I’m a fan!
@@AvaFlanell another thing that you didn’t go into was the price of 5.7 ammo, running presently at $1.00 per round.👎👎👎
@@TranslateToEnglish actually, I did lol. Remember when I said that 5.7 is .60 a round on the less expensive side and that a mag is roughly $12?
@@TranslateToEnglish anything else you want to complain about?
Where can you find that ammo for 60 cents per round?
Mind the gap... ✓✓✓✓ ULTIMATE TOOL COMMENT AWARD!!!
EDIT: actually your slide looks better there is no gap? Unlike other 5.7 on YT I've seen unless I'm missing something here.
Might make the pistol more accurate but due to the blowback it will get VERY dirty VERY quickly….
