Beach fishing tips for beginners (Part 4) - Shore Plaice - The Totally Awesome Fishing Show

  • Fishing is not always about having a magic bait, or the latest rod and reel. Success can often be measured by acting on a last minute hunch to go fishing at a certain shot. In this episode of The Totally Awesome Fishing Show Graeme Pullen shows you how to think "outside the box" and maybe get yourself among the fish. Target species was catching a Plaice from the shore at Southsea on the South Coast, Temperatures were freezing but the awesome filming duo of Graeme & Mike Pullen still came up with an episode that will have you reaching for your fishing rod. No long casting, required, just a good throw with the famous Wessex Rig baited with fresh Ragworm. TOTALLY AWESOME!!

    Me and my missus have been enthused, yes enthused by your vids. We bought two cheap rods and a few odds and ends and went fishing at Fleetwood from the beach. The boss caught a small plaice and I caught 2 plastic bags and a bus load of weed ...but it was a fantastic afternoon.. Love your shows...thanks. ( we returned the fish to the sea )

    I love Graham's enthusiasm for bashing a few Whiting!!! When you see the huge game fish hes caught ect , to get pleasure from a flounder or Whiting shows someone who truely loves angling.

    Plaice certainly do,with black and green being a popular colour the last couple of years.Whiting,Cod and most other fish will have no problem on bead colour. I like red and white, especially for Plaice as they have red spots. It might look like another plaice looking at the bait and bring them over.

    Yes,after the length of 40lb leader for casting,just clip or tie on your rig.Beach fishing can be tough at this time of year,but I reckon its better to be near the sea with a blank trip than on a lake.

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  Před 11 lety

    Not fished from there ,but Mike fished one of the piers on the island a few months ago.Said the locals were really friendly and wanted to get us over to do a Wight shore film. Maybe later this summer.But your pier sounds value for money,and fish as well !!

    Hi Kieron, Never fished there before. you need to ask your local tackle shop who should give you some advice but do take care in stormy conditions, other anglers have been washed away there. We have it on the to do list in the future

    Great vid for learning the lesson that it pays to think about where you fish and also to follow your hunches. All too easy to just go to the same spots all the time and in the same conditions.

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  Před 10 lety

    Absolutely, but they work better when drifting from a boat as they bump over the bottom, or you could cast it out from the shore and wind back slowly. They catch the wind when casting though so won't go too far.

    Use small hooks on something like the Wessex rig(see film on it) and check your bait every 15 mins.Keep to small baits like half a black lug,but put on a tiny sliver of squid strip as a tip bait.Don't know what it will fish like though,as after this winter the sea temps are supposed to be down 3 degrees.Good luck with it.

    Check out our long distance casting video on our beach fishing playlist. It's not always how far you can cast, as for length of time: 15 minutes in the water minimum, but if you wind in and the bait is still there leave it out 30 minutes. We sometimes leave it an hour if there are no crabs around, it lets the fish find it

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  Před 11 lety

    12 foot is fine, but I've never heard of a test curve rating on a beach rod, so that's new to me.Generally they are rated by the amount of weight they can cast. Say 4 to 6ozs would be about average for standard British beach fishing.

  • @bigowl9408
    @bigowl9408 Před 9 lety

    The old perennial story! Miles of beach and only a few spots do the business. Though Dorset's Chezil Beach is probably one of the most consistent for its eighteen miles, that I know.

    We use old Conoflex rods,probably over thirty years old,but they are probably the best for reliable quality.They are based in Sussex,though I don't know what their range is now.Might be worth checking their website. Alternately there's a lot of cheap import rods coming in.And a combo rod and reel outfit can be purchased at a really good price.Look after them though as I don't think the modern imports will last as long as our trusty Conoflex rods . 12-foot is the average length for a beach rod.

  • @TAFishing
    @TAFishing  Před 10 lety

    I guess so.Its been shocking for the last ten years, but I know a few anglers are getting 3-plussers around December time. But that's in the estuaries, not open beach. I think there may be more chancer of a Plaice than Flounder, but you need to "bling" up your terminal rig a bit to get the best chance.

Also, i'm always at a loss as to how often I should re-bait with rag, every 15 minutes or less? Thanks

    Always pleases me to see you using basic kit, no one can accuse you of being a fishing snob. Sad that some people wouldn't go if they didn't have the best or latest. Numbers of fishermen is on the increase along caister beach, no doubt following up rumours of bass being caught. The other day we watched a small trawler go by within casting distance of the shore no doubt taking even the tiny young fish from the entire coast.
