Beach fishing tips for beginners (Part 4) - Shore Plaice - The Totally Awesome Fishing Show

- Fishing is not always about having a magic bait, or the latest rod and reel. Success can often be measured by acting on a last minute hunch to go fishing at a certain shot. In this episode of The Totally Awesome Fishing Show Graeme Pullen shows you how to think "outside the box" and maybe get yourself among the fish. Target species was catching a Plaice from the shore at Southsea on the South Coast, Temperatures were freezing but the awesome filming duo of Graeme & Mike Pullen still came up with an episode that will have you reaching for your fishing rod. No long casting, required, just a good throw with the famous Wessex Rig baited with fresh Ragworm. TOTALLY AWESOME!!

Glad you like the show! There are still loads of people out there who haven't heard of us. Please share our videos as much as you can
Me and my missus have been enthused, yes enthused by your vids. We bought two cheap rods and a few odds and ends and went fishing at Fleetwood from the beach. The boss caught a small plaice and I caught 2 plastic bags and a bus load of weed ...but it was a fantastic afternoon.. Love your shows...thanks. ( we returned the fish to the sea )
I love Graham's enthusiasm for bashing a few Whiting!!! When you see the huge game fish hes caught ect , to get pleasure from a flounder or Whiting shows someone who truely loves angling.
Good show, reminds me of fishing with my old man as a kid in Scotland, freezing cold but fun. Teaching my son beach fishing now in New Zealand :-)
Plaice certainly do,with black and green being a popular colour the last couple of years.Whiting,Cod and most other fish will have no problem on bead colour. I like red and white, especially for Plaice as they have red spots. It might look like another plaice looking at the bait and bring them over.
Thanks, glad you enjoy them!
Yes,after the length of 40lb leader for casting, just clip or tie on your rig.Beach fishing can be tough at this time of year, but I reckon its better to be near the sea with a blank trip than on a lake.
Not fished from there ,but Mike fished one of the piers on the island a few months ago.Said the locals were really friendly and wanted to get us over to do a Wight shore film. Maybe later this summer. But your pier sounds value for money, and fish as well !!
Hi Kieron, Never fished there before. you need to ask your local tackle shop who should give you some advice but do take care in stormy conditions, other anglers have been washed away there. We have it on the to do list in the future
We have done a catfish DVD that is available to buy from our website. Caught 3 over 100lbs was an awesome trip!
No, furthest East was Hook Head peninsula. Had some good surf bass fishing off a west facing beach there. On the front cover of my older book "Go Fishing for Bass".
Of course there will be a part 5!
Great vid for learning the lesson that it pays to think about where you fish and also to follow your hunches. All too easy to just go to the same spots all the time and in the same conditions.
Absolutely, but they work better when drifting from a boat as they bump over the bottom, or you could cast it out from the shore and wind back slowly. They catch the wind when casting though so won't go too far.
I'm warm at home but still got excited when you got the stove going!
You look totally cozy! with all those coats! and great video! once again!
Thanks for puttin the effort in for us viewers ;]
Use small hooks on something like the Wessex rig(see film on it) and check your bait every 15 mins.Keep to small baits like half a black lug,but put on a tiny sliver of squid strip as a tip bait.Don't know what it will fish like though,as after this winter the sea temps are supposed to be down 3 degrees.Good luck with it.
Yes
I always watch your videos because I always learn something new. Your presentations are interesting and motivating
Keep 'em coming, loving these videos!
love the show! great job!
Just found your show, i have never thought of searching. But glad i did i love it. It makes me want to fish all the time. I am from Plymouth too, not far from where you fished.
Excellent video graeme keep it up!!
Check out our long distance casting video on our beach fishing playlist. It's not always how far you can cast, as for length of time: 15 minutes in the water minimum, but if you wind in and the bait is still there leave it out 30 minutes. We sometimes leave it an hour if there are no crabs around, it lets the fish find it
12 foot is fine, but I've never heard of a test curve rating on a beach rod, so that's new to me.Generally they are rated by the amount of weight they can cast. Say 4 to 6ozs would be about average for standard British beach fishing.
The old perennial story! Miles of beach and only a few spots do the business. Though Dorset's Chezil Beach is probably one of the most consistent for its eighteen miles, that I know.
You have some great tips and great videos!
We use old Conoflex rods, probably over thirty years old,but they are probably the best for reliable quality. They are based in Sussex, though I don't know what their range is now.Might be worth checking their website. Alternately there's a lot of cheap import rods coming in.And a combo rod and reel outfit can be purchased at a really good price.Look after them though as I don't think the modern imports will last as long as our trusty Conoflex rods . 12-foot is the average length for a beach rod.
Thanks very much. look forward to testing it :)
yes part 4!!!!!!!!!!!nAWESOME as allways!
Some good tips dude
Shore cod are thinner on the ground these days. I wouldn't target them here.Better to go to North Somerset. Somewhere like Watchet.
GREAT VIDS AS ALWAYS...GREAT VID...PERSISTENCE PAYS....
I guess so.Its been shocking for the last ten years, but I know a few anglers are getting 3-plussers around December time. But that's in the estuaries, not open beach. I think there may be more chancer of a Plaice than Flounder, but you need to "bling" up your terminal rig a bit to get the best chance.
great as always, ihope to see a part 5 sometime? haha
Thanks Graeme
Hopefully I will see you down there one day :-)
Cubes of mackerel first, then piece of squid,3rd maybe lugworm. Herring also OK,but mackerel is best.
Thanks
Ok thanks, grtz from belgium
South coast UK
fishing off southsea beach, best to check the bait every 15 mins max, doesnt usually take longer than that before ya bait has been stripped by the smaller fish/crab :)
Great video. The forts were built to defend against the french. (I think)
Oh jeez -4? That’s warm 😂
Hey I love the show. Im irish nd im 13. I fish a lot in the summer and I was wondering what bait to use for beach fishing for dogfish
what tackle (rods & reels) were you using in that video
great video
another excellent video!! i hope your hands have thawed out though as you were suffering for your art there i think haha!
Graeme, Have you every fished the Sandown pier in the Isle of White. I caught a very nice bass and cod there and it only cost £2.
Great Vid Graeme
Do you ever fish Chesil Beach?
I'm starting this spring on the beaches and plan a trip there and any tips for a deep close in beach like Chesil would be appreciated.
as a complete novice fisher i would like to see, how to unhook, and how to know what to keep and what should be thrown back
Great video and tips, i'm pretty new to beach casting, only been a few times now, caught a few schoolie bass and a few whiting, my main limitation is casting distance I feel, any tips on learning to cast further? Also, i'm always at a loss as to how often I should re-bait with rag, every 15 minutes or less? Thanks
what is that music at 11:26 , i 'v heard it from somewhere else...
could you use something called a flounder spoon for plaice?
Can you do a vid in wexford Ireland there is totally awesome fishing beaches there but the best place is the Combe
Have you fished at walton on the inside
What type of rods are you guys using, I'm thinking of starting beach fishing and I'm not sure what rod to use
have you ever fished around plymouth in devon?
Do plaice and whiting like coloured beads?
plaice are lovely fish to eat.
Is a 12 ft 5 lb test curve ok for beach fishing
TAFishing where do you guys normaly go fishing because i would love to go fishing with you's
On the weekend im going bournemouth to catch some plaice and flander
would that place be good for cod?
could you fish for plaice of a kayak?
Have you ever fished in east cork
doesn't a flounder spoon kicks up the sand?
No.We try to get everything back. Occasionally eat Plaice, that's about it.Or Wahoo,Dorado and Tuna when abroad.
what about chesil beach
Where else do you fish
U have any fishing idea for indian
Can u do a vid in blackpool
Can u do a vid in blackpool please
Where is this at
Always pleases me to see you using basic kit, no one can accuse you of being a fishing snob. Sad that some people wouldn't go if they didn't have the best or latest. Numbers of fishermen is on the increase along caister beach, no doubt following up rumours of bass being caught. The other day we watched a small trawler go by within casting distance of the shore no doubt taking even the tiny young fish from the entire coast.
grahem can u pleaaaseee do a video on gilt head bream
It's kind of hard mate, they are pretty elusive fish after all!
How do you catch sea bass with a spining rod
PKK Sk8t3rb0y just put lure like a Toby or koster and then go to somewhere rocky cast as far as you can and have a constant retrieve do that for a while you will get something
We call those sea worms
Sometimes. Plaice are my favourite eating sea fish. But I'd sooner catch a Bacon Cheeseburger !!
do you ever keep any fish ?
Rarely.I put back most of my fish .Just like Plaice and Cod really(from UK waters).
Its a love hate thing i see you lot catching loads then i go fishing and catch bugger all haha. Typical. Love the show though will help spread the word.
as bait can you use spam ? :]
spam used more widely for Barbel in freshwater.
Do you guys, ever eat the fish ?
Lol i would use a 2/0 for cod amd bass not flatfish try a small hook size 1 or 2 you should see your catch rate improve (;
You guys across the pond dont seem to have a crab problem? Here in the States (New England) " Boston area" it can be really bad. Theyll destroy your bait in 5 minutes time...
I think I spelled. It right
Who dislikes these videos and why?
apparently the flounder population in the solent has crashed.
i cut the heads of ragworm hahahaha
stephen mcaleese lol
