- Experience the classic music video "Waiting On A Friend" by The Rolling Stones through the fascinating lens of then and now.
Pop culture historian and host David Lindner guides you through the most iconic locations from this historic 1981 video, sharing insights into the famous shooting locations in Greenwich Village and the reality of 1980s New York versus today.
Released as the second single from their 1981 album "Tattoo You", "Waiting On A Friend" reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and quickly became a pop culture favorite. As Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day says, "It's one of the best songs they've ever written. When you're up in heaven, or wherever you're at, you're just waiting on friends to come along."
So, pull up a front stoop step and enjoy your view into Then & Now: Waiting On A Friend.

I was 14 when that song came out, and the first time I heard it, it blew right into my soul. I have no idea why, but it made me even then very melancholy, it seemed nostalgic even when it was brand new. To this day, it still takes me somewhere else in my spirit... to the past, to long times gone, to my youth. It makes me even more wistful now, a bit sad at how fast time has gotten away. Few songs have the power to truly mark the passing of your years and retain that same power on at both the early and later parts of your lifetime. This song has that. I truly love it.
Excellent attention to detail!!😮
Thanks! I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
I live in the Lower East Side , went to that bar to wait for my friends . What a memorable time . Of course the Stones song with that year and time. Great video .
Thanks! Pleased you enjoyed it!
In the late 1970s the east village was a run down crime-ridden area but there were musicians and artists there taking advantage of the lower rents. I was one of them. CBGBs and later The Pyramid Club were outposts of culture. Completely un-gentrified. 2nd Ave was the border. St Marks Bar & Grill was a place were musicians used to go. It was bare-bones and cheap but decidedly hip. There was a music revolution going on with bands with the punk movement. We had a disdain for old cliche "corporate rock". So when I saw The Stones at The St Marks Bar & Grill I felt exploited in some way. I felt a disconnected. But then I thought it was cool that they connected with that scene that was so low-rent and grass roots. I've always been a fan and I'm still a fan. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience...I've always admired and have been intrigued by locations, areas, scenes, and the lower east side has such a rich history...I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
That’s really cool … woulda loved to have experienced the vibe there in the late 70’s/early 80’s … I think the video captures that vibe a little 😎😎
Wow... that's sweet.
A real fan.
Thanks! I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
I was lucky to go to that bar back in the early 90’s
It's a lower east side staple...
@@thisiswherethenandnow The only reason I went to the bar because it was in the video. I forget what time of day it was. the place was empty maybe early afternoon I remember it like it was yesterday.
Bartender chastised me for being a tourist.

Extraordinary! What a fabulous journey! Memory Lane!
Thanks Patty! While making this vlog, it was indeed a fond journey down memory lane...Although 9-yrs-old, I was so fortunate to have seen the Stones live during an auspicious era of the band.
A really fascinating and interesting video. I love these now and then videos and photos. I would have been really interested to have seen/heard from some of the 'extras' in the video to get their insight. Thank you for your work into producing this video!
Thank you! I'm pleased you enjoyed it!

Greatest Stones video, with such soul. I’m guessing; still after 40+ years; Peter Tosh, Max Romeo, and who sit with Mick???
Thanks! Pleased you enjoyed it!
i went into the St mark Bar and Grill for a couple of beers after seeing them in '89. I was half expecting them to stop by for a post concert drink!
I was at Shea Stadium 🏟 for Steel Wheels too...As far as the Stones walking in, certainly weirder things have happened at St. Mark's Bar & Grill then that 😆 🤣...
Thank you this was really great to watch!
Liked and subscribed!
Thanks again! Please keep them coming!
Thank you! I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
Very cool vid! Can't wait for the next!
Thanks! Pleased you enjoyed it!
Great video. I had no idea they filmed at the Physical Graffiti building.
Thanks! I'm pleased you enjoyed it! Yeah, they didn't give us a broadside view of the building in the video...
Great I used to work in the area 20 years ago at a holistic pet store going to McDonald’s st marks x burger in my lunch break and couple of times at st marks bar to listen some bands NYC
So awesome. Thank you ❤
Thanks! Pleased you enjoyed it!
Beautiful and well made video,. I love all things '81&'82 as well having seen both Wembley Stadium shows June '82 and Slane Castle gig a month later. Thank God we have all the shows to look back on ( I have Hampton, Let's Spend The Night Together and Leeds Roundhay Park all on Blu-ray, the very best of times 🕺🥁🎸🎷💎🔥👌☘️🇮🇪
Thanks! I'm pleased you enjoyed it! So fortunate you got to see those shows...An auspicious time in the Stones' history!
Good work, sir!👍
Thanks! I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
bet you wish you still had that shirt! 02:53 awesome to see these sites for a lifelong stones fan like me. was cool to you and your mate dressing like, acting like Mick and Keith during walk to bar. awesome stuff.
Thank you! It's an artistic endeavor that my friends and I have an absolute blast creating! Amazing it was 42-yrs-ago this past July that the Stones filmed it on location in the historic lower east side of NYC; a time of video making that's unfortunately now gone, but NOT forgotten!
Keith Richards clocking the stage rusher with his guitar.
I believe that incident was at their Hampton, VA show in December...
Gracias por hacer esto!! Cómo te envidio, eso es vivir!! Adoré lo que mostraste!! Solo con verlo!! Porque no entiendo el idioma pero eso no importa, lo disfruté muchísimo
Peter Tosh and his band mates are the dudes on the stoop.🎵🎸🎷🥁
Thank you for this. My 16 year old daughter loves the "WOAF" video and loves the behind the scenes photos that eventually emerge online. This was compelling for her.
Thanks! I'm pleased you both enjoyed it!
Well done ❤thx
Thanks David for another educational & very interesting video. I’m watching in San Diego & have never experienced the neighborhoods of New York. I also enjoyed your Taxi Driver video, then & now on the streets of New York. Is there any chance you’ll make some more videos? I’ll subscribe, just in case you do, as I think the two I’ve seen are superb!
Thank you! I'm pleased you enjoyed it and hopefully gave you a sense of what it's like to be on the historic and iconic streets of NYC...I'm in the process of writing, investigating and trying to obtain permission to have access to several locations...The next several I'm considering are a myriad of different subjects, so it's good you subscribed...
Love this! Watched with a big smile on my face ! You got yourself a new sub (121). Really looking forward to seeing your channel grow as I'm sure it will ❤❤
Thanks! I'm pleased you enjoyed it! I'm looking forward to posting more content in 2024...
Hay ciertos lugares que no deberían modificarse. Gracias por mostrar ésto
実在するんですね😍今も👍ニューヨークだったんだ✨ありがとう
Wow, were those fans nuts??!! Booing Prince, he's SUPER. Too bad Mick and Prince never did a song together. Nice video. x
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it! Yeah, a Mick and Prince duet would have been nice to see...
That’s great , it’s one of my favourite tracks as well ! Thanks for the info 😊
Thanks! I'm pleased you enjoyed it!
I think Billy Joel's "A Matter of Trust" may have been filmed there, or a few doors down too
Billy Joel and his band perform A Matter of Trust in the basement of a building located at 23 St. Mark's Place in New York City's East Village.
Love it! Where can I find this version of the waiting on a friend?
Dave Milone at Alpha Wave Studios, Whippany, NJ
I was at the concert that booed Prince off stage… George Thorogood and the Destroyers opened, along with Jay Giles Band… Prince sang a bad choice song and was lucky to make it off the stage…The crowd threw everything they had at him, even tennis shoes…😵💫🙃
WOW! How things would change for Prince though...
"Bad choice song"? What was it? A GG Allin cover?
Who is that dude in the window?🤔
Not sure...
I heard he was a producer. 😊
