Kit Connor (the actor who played Nick) is probably the only one of the main crew for whom this role wasn't his first acting job. So it's not so surprising you find him as the best in acting of them all, but I really think they were all pretty amazing.
Sebastian Croft has also acted before!
@@RisingTron That's why I said "probably". 😅 Thank you for that correction. I wouldn't probably count him into the main crew tho, since he isn't in so much scenes through the show.
I think the only one I disagree with is Ben Hope. I'd have bumped him up to "They Exist" because I do think he is a necessary character, and has a substantial effect on how Charlie perceives certain aspects of his relationship with Nick, despite only appearing a few times.
And himself in general. Ben contributed to his already low self esteem.
For this season I don’t think Bens affect on Charlie was as big and maybe not as noticeable for those who haven’t read the comics. I think that’ll come out more next season
In my opinion, Ben is a really good character. He is obviously one of the main antagonists, but i've seen a lot of people reacting to him and relate to him or "understand" him because these secret couple stories seem to be pretty common in highschool. I found it interesting to compare his journey with Nick's. It shows us two possible outcomes of processing these feelings. (Plus, i found him really scary when he apperared on screen).
Maybe i am less fond of Harry because he reminds me too much of the annoying boys i used to go to school with haha
But of course not everyone is sensible to the same things and that is why i like to watch different reactions to the show
I feel like this is very true I feel like Ben can become a better character and person and rn he’s generally a bad person but I feel like he’s just doing that because he’s insecure and he puts that on to Charlie wich is obviously a bad thing to do but I think you’ve said it perfectly
Completely agree with where you placed Harry. The actor did a fantastic job at how unlikeable he was. He’s a very realistic British prick that anyone could encounter. Absolute menace
Honestly, as far as antagonists go, I kinda agree with how you ended up putting them? I think for me the difference is emotional, which is a bit weird, because obviously both of them got me angry, but with Ben I was just tired and repulsed, and just wanted him gone;; with R-ah-lfoy, I loved to hate him, I wanted him to stay on the screen for longer so more people could punch him.
Also WOOO justice for Isaac there are still too many people who overlook him because yes, fair, he has few lines, but what he does with his screentime is great!
You saying "I guess this is one of those shows where they go on dates and hang out and have a good time" about season 2... Oh boy.. I cant wait for it to come out and see your reactions.
I hope they follow volume 3 for the next season
I actually think more people agree with your stance on Tao than you realise haha, he's definitely the most debated character from what I've seen. but that's also what makes me so interested in his character: he's far from perfect but very human in that sense
Spoiler for the Comics:
It’s funny how he became so controversial over this, whereas in the books, he is similarly upset about finding out last, but his pouting lasts for not even a full day lol
@@ExElliexE yeah I agree, he definitely seemed more temperamental in the show, which is understandable to make it more interesting and add drama
@@boop_beep_sheep4876 i think it also has to do with the fact that we see more of Tao in the show in general. in the comics he's very much a side character we only see sometimes so even if he did react quite similarly in the comics, we couldn't really see it (at least not to the same extent)
Agree with you on your "Heartstopper list", my favorite are also NIck, Charlie and Isaac (in this order). But my forth favorite would be Tori and she would be also there for me. 😂
a thing that not a lot of people notice about the scene when Charlie tells off Ben on the field, is that starts crying lmao. I'm not 1000% sure what it means but lowkey scared they might go for a redemption arc.
“Rahlfoy” 🤣💀
I enjoyed the scenes when Tao was verbally destroying Harry, they were hilarious. I would probably put Harry in They Exist for that reason. Ben though... he unlocked bonus levels of anger issues in me. Definitely Poo on My Shoe
if you wanted to read the comic, they're super quick to read and they're available for free online. i read all 4 books in a day but like.. they mainly pictures
Love how ur opinion of the show changed throughout
i completely agree with your list omg
There are only few movies or series where both the main leads are likeable and Nick and Charlie's relationship is just top tier when it comes to a healthy relationship
Nick and Tao are my joint favs, but if I had to pick one id pick Tao because I never had a friend that stuck up for me or cared for me as Tao did for Charlie, so that's what made him my fav (the books helped too but his character coming alive on screen really solidified the first place for me). I like Nick because whilst I can relate to him in his struggle with his sexuality, I am much more like charlie personality wise and seeing how nick treated someone like me so kindly and delicately made me love him, just like with Taos character. So basically I guess you could say I like the two characters that the character I'm like the most (charlie) is closest to, because of the way they looked out for him, loved him no matter what etc
Mega fuming that Draco RAHfoy did not end up in Heartstoppers tier lmao
Not a comment I thought I’d get 😂😭
Top 3 for me would have to be Nick, Charlie, Tara!! I really like Tori, Elle, Darcy, Tao, and Isaac as well, it’s hard to choose!
You don't like Harry as a character, but you think the actor did a great job portraying a character you hate, right?
Well as Nick is arguably the titular character, I'm glad he ranked as a "heartstopper"
Heartstoppers: Nick, Charlie; The Greats: Elle, Tara, Tori, Mom; Really Good: Isaac, Tao, Darcy, Harry; They Exist: Imogen, Ben …. Where’s the teacher? He’s a great on my list!
I would definitely have put Tori under Greats. She was someone in Charlie’s family who was always there for him, who was a constant support even at his lowest. I feel like Tori was to Charlie, what Olivia Coleman was to Nick
Toris my fav character in the books but in the series nelly!!
I actually agree on all but Tori and Harry! Tori would be in The Greats between Sarah Nelson and Darcy, and Harry would be right at the bottom, just above B*n
Tori is the best character in my opinion aw damn
Favorite or top 5 characters are Nick, Charlie, Tara, Elle, Tori for me and in that order. I read the comic and I get Tao and how he's a good friend but still don't like him as much as the other characters. Watched the show before the comics..... yeah he struck a nerve with me at times and in the comic, you find something else about him that made me dislike him a bit more. He's still good but not top 5 material for me.
as someone who read the comics first, honestly i really like tao. i think they just made him a bit of a mardy twat to stop the show from potentially being a bit boring, but i can definitely see how someone could dislike him if they watched the show first then found out the other thing. i hope he gets a bit more likeable in season 2 (& i can’t really see that not happening if i’m honest)
@@frinoahshrd I watched the show first and didn't mind him much. He made some annoying comments and him being ignoring Charlie after he got to think about the situation made me annoyed because he knows that Charlie will blame himself (he tells it to Nick) but still doesn't reassure to Charlie that it isn't his fault. But otherwise I found him pretty funny and really cute with Elle. The books didn't change my opinion about him since he rally isn't in it much. But the whole Tao accidentally outing made me just confused. I feel like if that was in the show he would be very dislikable.
Love them all apart from Harry and Ben lol
the books take 30min to 1h30 to read. there is barely any words. ;)
I think with Ben, I'd have liked for him to either lean in to being uncaring or obsessive. He was a bit oddly split between the two, so while he serves as a good narrative device to understand Charlie's angst and show him starting to stick up for himself, Ben himself is a bit of an unclear character. With Harry, you know what his deal is: he's a prick, he's rich and enjoys belittling people. With Ben, he's kind of contradictory. Like, he'd feel more real if he were solidly uncaring and just using Charlie to kiss boys, while constantly throwing him under the bus and taking no real interest in him. Maybe justifying it to himself that no, he's still straight, this is just for laughs. Or lean into him being obsessive, tracking Charlie down to say mean things to him, trying to control him, the jealousy etc. Maybe justifying it as he's trying his best, he's just not ready to come out, why can't Charlie just behave? I think that it was supposed to be that Ben was obsessive while pretending to be uncaring, but there wasn't really the space to flesh that out fully, so he seemed a bit contradictory. That said, I do feel like he was an important character narratively.
I think that he has a lot of internalised homophobia and that's why he acts so tough and leans into toxic masculinity, because he's telling himself that he's not really gay, that he's not like those soft sensitive gay boys like Charlie, that he can still hang out with the popular kids and be a "real man". Basically, he's tough because he's overcompensating. His obsession with Charlie stems specifically from how sexually repressed he is. Charlie is probably the only out gay boy Ben knows, making him the perfect boy for Ben to experiment with (Remember that the first time Ben talked to Charlie was when he congratulated him for coming out?), and he's also beneath Ben in the high school's social hierarchy, which means that, on the one hand, if he ever decided to out Ben, he probably wouldn't be believed, and on the other hand, that Ben probably thinks that someone like Charlie should feel grateful that a popular boy like Ben is showing him attention, which would make Charlie put up with any kind of treatment from Ben and would also mean that Charlie would most likely keep quiet about the whole affair. Realistically, it would probably be hard for Ben to find a new boy to make out with if the school is so homophobic that most kids are not out, and if he were to pursue another boy he would just be putting himself in danger of being outed, so Charlie seems like the best, the safest bet for him, because Charlie is shy and insecure, won't stand up for himself, won't make a fuss. Ben likes the power dynamic of his relationship with Charlie, he likes having someone he can control, someone he knows wouldn't demand more of his time, someone who wouldn't interfere and cause drama in his friend group, someone who he could kiss while still keeping his social status. That's why he acts so cool while he is in control but the moment Charlie breaks up with him he becomes obsessive. It's not because he cares about Charlie, but simply because it enrages him to lose control of Charlie, because of how entitled he is and because he thinks he should be the one calling the shots. Him obsessing over Charlie is not a "I really miss him" situation, but a "How dare he reject me?" situation. It really just shows that he always thought Charlie was beneath him (you can see it from how he calls Charlie lame and pathetic). He also projects his own issues, caused by internalised homophobia, onto Charlie. Thus, he despises Charlie's sensitivity because he also hates himself for being gay (or bi).
So basically him being uncaring and him being obsessive are just the two sides of toxic masculinity. He's uncaring because he thinks real men have to always be in control and not talk about emotions. He's obsessive because rejection throws him into a rage.
I might say something here that will make ppl hate me 😅
We all loved Nick, as shown on your poll for a very unfortunate reason 😕
We all wished we had our Nick in high school, we all had a crush and we all hoped for that to have turned the way Charlie's story turned out. I'd say Tori nailed in one line: "well done though"
As a gay man, I identify with both, Charlie and Nick, I wasn't apologetic like Charlie, but I've been openly gay and faced my demons early on in my life and many of my demons were those of Nick's. I feel Tara's and Darcy's relationship is the mirrored to N&C, but a few months ahead.
About the acting though, Sebastian Croft nailed it. Look at his expression and the cracks in his voice, it's all so real!!!! The tear at the end of episode 8, I would've love for Charlie for still be more empathetic about Ben's demons and maybe have said something like: "when you're ready, I will always be happy to help you navigate this, it'll do you so much good". Otherwise, I feel Ben's life is really at the edge of a cliff and every life is too precious to lose one.
@@tjwonderboy I don't think Charlie should be there to help him navigate. He was there and was treated horrible. I just don't think there is any need to be kind to people who abused you. (Hope you know this isn't an attack on you, rather your opinion.)
Yes Rafoy for The Greats😂
Harry being on greats 😡
