I prime mine by the little pump When I change my 3 filters I fill up the big middle filter housing with diesel put back on housing tighten down I then open the cap on the water fuel separator housing I pour fuel into there about 3/4 full and pump away you can see the fuel go down in the separator bowl I do this while I’m changing my oil and over 30 mins I pump and refill separator bowl pump fill pump fill and 95% of the time it fires right up or spins over less than a minute and fires up I don’t have the tool but this purges mine pretty good. Last shop that did mine when I picked it up it wouldn’t start until constant spinning over and over for 10 mins that’s why I do my own now
We use a 12v inline electric fuel pump we put one end in the tank clip the other on the port and just have a set of alligator clips we hook to the closest power and earth.. works great.. also use it for series 60 with an adaptor
Im so glad to see you and your new shop doing so great. I just get aggravated watching these old school guys and mechanics still trying to repair these modern space age machines without reading the manual or using the correct factory auth tools. Kudos to yo young man. Have a pleasant day in Texas. Bill
That pump spayer is not necessary when doing filter changes, but very helpful when doing top end repair involving injector removal. For the do it your self guys. Just fill the frame mounted filter all the way full and leave the cap loose. Before installing the small cap on the main filter or medium size cap for the earlier filter model, fill the main housing with fuel to the top of the little cap. Put the little cap on and start pumping. Pay attention to the level in the frame filter. When that level reduces to 1 inch above the big black nut thing, tighten the top cap nut. Start pumping agint 100 strokes. Then crank the engine for 10 seconds. If it doesn't start, pump another 100 strokes. Then it will start. If you can manage to do good clean work and pay attention to detail, I suggest you leave the main filter housing alone!
Shane Shane hi. Thank you so much for info re: priming a DD15 engine. I think I follow your advice, and I'm assuming you have had success with method you have described. Let me see if I understand you correctly: you are saying refill the fuel system at the fuel/water separator tank (big, transparent one near front of engine) and using plunger-type hand pump at multi-filter fuel filter assembly beside fuel pump in order to prime fuel system after fuel system repair such as injector replacement. Is this correct Shane? And have you done this successfully? I appreciate your input, thank you.
Buy the fittings from parker goto home depot buy the small pump sprayer for 20 dollars. Attach parker fittings to pump hose pump up the pressure..done and dont have to spend 400 to 600 bucks for so called primer tool
Thank you for watching Dominic. Its pretty tough at times trying to make videos since I am always strapped with time but I have to keep pushing these videos out. If you haven't subscribed yet I would really appreciate it.

Great video , I hope you can help me , I have a 2016 cascadia dd15 with 2 filters setup , just last week mechanic replace my fuel injector lines and do oil change , now my truck have a hard time starting every morning, I had to hand prime manually to get the track started, any ideas what is wrong thanks , and after a got it started in the morning it will start fine all day , just when it sit overnight it won’t start in the morning
The prime oump on the housing is there exactly for priming. You're correct. The way shown in this video is simply doing it way way quicker. Although is not a approved way. The manual pump via detroit also purges the air in the system while it primes. It's better for unit to use the manual pump. There is approved tools which detroit uses. It's called a furl ESOC. Not cheap but what is approved. Idk where he thought you were losing prime. But I've found the easiest way to lose prime is through your fuel water separator. Make sure it has a good seal. When changing the filter in it seems some forget to change the gasket or don't put a gasket back in at all. Bad move. You'll see no fuel in it meaning it's lost the prime somehow. If that has no fuel in it the truck most likely won't start. If it does only for a few moments. Gl. Any question I'm betting I can help.
I change the fuel filters 2 days ago and still cranck couple of second and then start. I didn't used the prime pump! What can i do if that's continuous? So anything i have to cares about?
I was having rough idle on my dd13 so had the quantity valve replaced but now truck won’t start ! I had it turned on with starter fluid and ran it a full day then turned off at end of day and will not start ! Any ideas what can be the problem ?
I boought that primer My question if i put deisel fuel on it do i need filter or when i am priming the fuel goes in fillter and over there gonna be filtered? Thanks
Looks like this video is for an actual mechanic and not the driver. Since my truck won’t start I’ll just pull the freightshaker approved priming pump, right?
How much that priming system u guys use Can i have name to search for it I did change oil at petro but they not doing a clean job i had to tell them to clean water separetor
I have a question I'm hoping you have an answer for. So I had a mechanic replace the fuel filter on my 09 freighliner DD15. It has been updated to the 2 fuel filter system. After they replaced the fuel filter, it did not start. After they diagnosed the issue, the conclusion was the fuel module was the problem. My question is, are they at fault for the fuel module being damaged after fuel filter change or is that a common occurrence? Thanks in advance
@@TATEXPRESSINC Thank you for your reply, I really appreciate it. The shop had to hire a Detroit diesel specialist to come and diagnose the problem. They said they could not find the issue and suspect the control module. But the truck started just fine when I brought it to shop. They change fuel filter Now it doesn't want to start. I'm wondering if they made a mistake with install that damaged module or if it something else. Lesson learned, when I'm near Hutchins I will take my truck for scheduled maintenance to you guys. Thanks again
No problem Alex thanks for watching. We have gotten calls for trucks not starting after filter change and we find filters not installed correctly or fuel system not primed before start up. What was the solution for your no start?
@@TATEXPRESSINC Its in the shop right now. the Detroit Diesel company the shop hired said they could not find the problem. So the only problem the specialist could speculate was the fuel control module. Now the shop is in the process of replacing it out now.
Alex, didn’t you say that module was just recently updated? If so it should not have failed. I hope they get you back on the road. Thanks for reaching out to us.
Detroit says to prime with 3 gal of fuel and psi should be between 70 and 95 depending on year of engine the 150 bar is min starting psi in the fuel rail
The only approved part of your priming tool there was the fitting and shut off valve. Detroit since the dd15 came out has said the only approved tool to prime the system is the ESOC priming system. Same for the Davco system for the fuel separator. Your system works for a start I suppose. But the for the dd15 system you refill with what's said as low pressure and start with what's said high pressure. Your "approved" system have neither reading on it so it's unknown. Maybe delete this video and show people the proper way using an ESOC.
Jaime Cruz thanks for watching. The video is for demonstration purpose only. Not every time you will need to prime system after a PM. This is mostly when repairs have been made to the fuel system. Also that’s a great price and again thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe. 🇺🇸🔧👊🏼💪🏼🇨🇱

The anti flow back valve is the plug to the right of and inline with the fuel inlet line, it takes a 1/4 inch hex key socket to remove.
What about the manual prime pump? I've gotten started with the manual pump. Is there for a reason
