- Zwift vs. TrainerRoad vs. Wahoo SYSTM- I've used them all and they're fantastic, but each is a bit different. Sharing my thoughts on which I think is best and which I'll be using to train for an upcoming gravel bike race.

So 60 year old guy, been with TR since 2011 and absolutely love it during the build phase of the year. Just joined Zwift 2 weeks ago due to neck surgery and will be off the bike till June, except for indoor. I’ll mix in both but as I get closer to getting back on the road, a TR build phase will be all that will be running. Zwift is fun to play, but when it’s time to work, it’s TR time.
Good points! Zwift is definitely fun, I agree. Good luck with recovery!
I’ve completed training blocks at different times with both TrainerRoad and Zwift. I saw the most real world gains with Trainer Road, especially after they rolled out the adaptive AI feature. Zwift workouts on the plans I did were either too easy or too hard based on my current level of fatigue resistance. However, Zwift is a lot more enjoyable in all other aspects due to the social and community components - it’s how I was able to complete the Festive 500 the last few years when no local friends wanted to ride during the holidays 😅. But for pure training TR is my choice.
Systm I tried for a few weeks during the rollout promotion and was too hard to stick with. The workouts in my mid-volume plan ranged from 45mins to 2.5hr (?!?!) indoors. Too tough to fit that range into my schedule.
I love this take. Agreed that the social and community aspects are huge anchors to Zwift- if I had friends meeting for group rides, I would join.
Thanks for the content man was just thinking about switching from zwift to trainer road. Im sold now
With my Kickr I use both Zwift and TrainerRoad. I use TR on my phone, then have Zwift on my MacBook, but only enable power and cadence in Zwift. I have Zwift on so I have something to stare at, and to earn drops/exp. Also, I have difficulty focusing on other things during hard intervals, so having Zwift with music works the best for me. Then when the workout is done, I save the TR ride and delete the Zwift ride, as they’ll clash in Strava.
Thanks for another great video! Ride on!
Haha, this is exactly my set up! Following the polarized 8 week plan on TR. Never been happier!
Dude, that is quite the operation, bravo! Thanks for watching and for sharing!
I might have to give this a try…
Zwift. The ability to design your own work-outs/programing, or choose one from their list of formal training plans is reason enough, and if you ride up the alp a few times, maybe you'll see a Yeti.
The Yeti! Such a legend.
You’re definitely right about hating them in the moment… I like the simplicity of TR… and I like what Zwift offers as well… however if I’m “working” it’s on TR…
Solid points! I think if I had more friends doing meetups, I'd consider Zwift.
Just got a trainer (tacx neo bike) and started trainer road this winter. I weighed the options and came to the same conclusion: simplicity and efficiency is top priority. Zwift reminds me of that creepy black mirror episode about riding bikes while locked in prison to earn points for a chance to escape... eek.
Hahaha, great comparison!
Always think Wahoo SYSTM gets overlooked. Though I use Zwift as well, SYSTM is chock full of great workouts to compelling videos. It’s not just racing either, my favourite workouts are the Mike ‘Col Collective’ Cotty On Location videos which are genius and such a tonic to a grisly English winter. The Neil Henderson, Phil Gaimon and Ian Boswell ‘Week With’ series too are awesome. The normal Sufferfest videos too brilliant- every type of workout you could ever need that makes the time just fly. Well worth exploring
Great points! Might have to give it another look.
Great review. I switch from TR to Wahoo in winter because Of their core workouts library.
Totally get it. If I were doing more workouts off of the bike, I’d take a hard look at Wahoo
Agree. Indoor training took me to another level. No matter what application you use. Chris, let’s tackle the rumors about a new tarmac or maybe a venge :)) I am just waiting for the launch announcement. Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas and happy new year! It's anyone's guess on a new Tarmac or Venge. David Arthur posted a video about it last week- he's probably the best source for inside info.
@@outdoorbros_ can’t wait for the announcement. I will not spare the phrase”I told you” :))))
i find it pretty hard to watch netflix shows or listen to podcasts during vo2max intervals :D Staring at that Alpe du Zwift turn works much better
Same here. During those vo2 max intervals, I literally cannot focus on anything else but just keeping those legs spinning and keeping the oxygen coming. No spare energy left to even focus on the screen, let alone focus on a show.
That said, I’d still take TR since my sole purpose for indoor riding isn’t for the social aspect.
Really? I find if I look away, the interval goes by that much faster.
Slow cyclist or fast cyclist? Might need a name change after a few months of TR. Cheers, dude- thanks for watching!
I love TR. However, I feel there are way too many SS workouts. So, on those days, I use the custom app and add some Z2 work and after SS workouts
I question how you can do things such as check emails, study, watch anything where you need to concentrate when 9n the trainer.
Are you actually doing proper workouts beyond just trundling along?
I think it goes without saying that emails and things that require concentration are best during easy days and rest intervals. Currently typing this while on the trainer at 211w. Seems to work for me.
Trainer road has too many sweet spot workouts in their program which for me guaranteed burn out. Mind you I am in my 50's, maybe they need some age tailored plans.
I will agree that the quantity of sweet spot workouts is huge. I take it you’re a Zwift fan?
What about xert or training peaks?
I used training peaks years ago and loved it. Haven’t used Xert, but it looks cool.
i use both at the same time, best of both worlds
