I Was Wrong About Digital Gaming...

- The outlook for purchasing video games appears increasingly grim, marking just the initial stages of the impending "all-digital future." As physical sales decline and an increasing number of publishers eschew physical media releases, fundamental questions arise regarding ownership rights. Are consumers truly owners of their digital content, or are they subject to the discretion of platform holders who can revoke access at will? Unfortunately, the latter. #physicalgames #gaming #gamingcollection

I saw "The Escapist" and immediately thought that this was a Second Wind video in my head. 😂
SAME!!!! Didn’t realize it was escapist until the end!
Really? "THE ALL DIGITAL FUTURE" bit with the explosion animations didn't tip you off it wasn't up to par with 2W's quality? Well... glad you liked it.
@@jombilywobbily I was talking about the notification on my phone that Escapist had uploaded a video.
@@jombilywobbily Thought it was a freelancer testing a new video idea and format
Looks like this is their first video in 3 months. Which isn’t surprising. But same - I just saw the name and clicked without thinking about it
I came here to gawk at the comments, but this ended up being nice background noise while I chopped potatoes. Good luck beard guy.
The Escapists: Home of White Noise
Same as it ever was
I saw the clip at the end of the video. I don't like it when Brett says "if you want to air your grievances, throw 'em at me".
Brett, you're not a punching bag. The Escapist is a shit company for treating their employees like they did, and they shouldn't be using you as a shield to sponge criticism for them. I'm sure you lot that come in after the Second Wind crew will do your best, but I also hope that The Escapist learns its lesson about treating its workers properly. Knowing corporate America, probably not, but good luck to you guys.
Nick was very professional about this too, dissuading everyone from harassing the upload
This wasn't The Escapist's fault; all complaints need to go straight to Gamurs. Hound them til their CEO quits.
Replace The Escapist with Gamurs Group and your comment would be accurate.
It is a face, not a voice-over very brave that all I can say good luck to you my sir
This conversation happened with PT as well.
To the viewers, ask yourself why Brett did not state his handle directly.
A lot of pull that content creators have in middle manager channels like these is the ability to build their brand. People “know” Yahtzee by name more than anything else. People “Know” segments and idea spaces like design delve.
This video scrubs all recognizable content from the creator, and only allows them to mention their twitter (but not the handle itself) and to post links hidden in the description.
To me this reads as a clear corporate move to reduce the bargaining power of the remaining employees. With less direct recognition, individual employees have less brand pull to define themselves and bargain with.
I am unsatisfied with the writing on the wall here and will not be supporting this company if it continues to marginalize and limit the content creators to drones.
They aren’t “writers on the website.” They are real people with a personality and passion to bring to the table. They should be directly recognized for their work and allowed to build their brand.
Talk about assumption central. Escapist management deserves to be called out for their dumb decisions, but now you’re assuming things they did purely because you don’t like them.
What proof do you have he was mandated to only _show_ his Twitter handle and not say it? That could’ve been his own choice you’re extrapolating. And if they actually wanted to diminish creators, why would they allow them to even show or post their links at all? Or say their full name (as opposed to just first name or not mention it)? Plenty of IGN articles will just say “IGN Staff” even though it’s not an update from the company, nor written by a group.
Same thing with “writers on the website”. Now a bit of assumption on my part, but I have hung out with Brett a few times. He’s a decent dude. I can’t imagine he said that as a denigration, but rather just a shorthand because there’s too many to mention. It’s also just _a normal thing to say_ when you have a large group or don’t want to miss someone.
And you know what? Nick referred to that section of the staff the same way. Because the points in both cases are that the website/articles staff doesn’t post on the CZcams channel. So it’s to let YT viewers know “there’s another section of our crew most of you aren’t aware of”, and in this case, maybe teasing that they’ll start making videos where they weren’t before. Because the assumption is that because the “YT crew” left, they have no staff. Some may not even know Escapist has a website, and had it before they had a CZcams channel.
Criticize Escapist for what they’ve actually done, but don’t start making things up just because you hate their decisions. There’s enough confirmed things to criticize already. It’ll only make things worse for the staff still working there.
@@mrshmuga9 I am pointing out relevant parts of the video. It’s basic reading comprehension. Note I never said he could not do this, only that he didn’t and we have to make our own conclusions from there. You are coming up with justifications for the end result of the video and I am pointing out real consequences from the changes made in the overall production choices in the video. Judge based off of end results not intentions behind changes. That is how we fix systemic issues. By calling out these negative patterns even if they may have been done unintentionally. Regardless of the reasoning, the missing branding is apparent. At most you could say I’m reaching for saying it was scrubbed but I mean come on this isn’t a one man show in a garage. This is a media corporation. There is no way this script was not reviewed before release.
Regardless of intention this is the first video from escapist after a very public departure. I am paying attention to the changes in format, and the ways the content itself is provided. If you think that his script was not reviewed at some point by the larger “suits” that is naiive and very hopeful thinking imo. In places I have worked, there would be no way that such a public facing piece of content would be pushed out without guidelines, and stamps of approval.
People lie. We can’t just accept any justification given for an action. We have to pay attention to the consequences of these seemingly trivial choices that are made.
To anyone else reading, remember that what is put out on the screen was almost certainly poured over by a team of people with intent. We have to call out when the outcome itself, even if done with the bestest of best intentions, is damaging and harmful.
One final thing, for those paying attention, the content of this video discusses a very interesting topic. Who owns what in a digital environment and who makes the calls on the content. Something very similar to the reason of the prior casts departure. Having worked corporate for a while this type of thing is soooo common because the content comes second to the way the content reads and can be interpreted. Yes, maybe that isn’t the case and the people making this content are wholly inexperienced but that is no excuse for systemic changes that can teeter into codification and turn into a marginalization of these workers. Something that this company specifically have historical precedent for. I’m not pulling this out of my ass I am calling it as I personally see it based on known patterns, history of the company, and history of the industry.
If it’s really unintentional they can change the format to benefit the creator. No harm, no foul. Again I said “would not continue” as in, I’m willing to give a chance for the format to change. Criticism is an important part of growth.
One edit: Go listen to Nick explain the reasons behind the departure if you have not already. Then ask yourself if the corporation and people behind these decisions would be more likely to internally change their culture and empower their remaining employees, or if they would change their overall production to reduce the power the workers have when discussing management to prevent such a loss of productivity and revenue in the future?Think about unions and workers bargaining power, and how they are treated by other corporations (I.e. starsucks). I write this not for the commenter but for any stray readers in the comment section. We can only make decisions based off of what is in front of us and past knowledge. Given the history of this specific situation, and how it relates to workers rights at large, I personally am choosing to lean towards a negative bias. However I implore readers to research yourselves and PAY ATTENTION to the format.
@@zb3268 I agree you can criticize the end result without knowing the intentions, as a way to influence change for the future. Whether it was a mandate or just something the creator overlooked/didn’t think about. But you’re saying that just because someone likely reviewed it, that any decision you don’t like is because it was forced onto them. This video could’ve been done exactly as he wanted and all the “review process” did was check that it was coherent or didn’t have any audio/visual errors.
If anything, the ending suggests to me the video was likely untouched (in terms of creative choices). It would be much easier to move forward if they didn’t draw attention to the past. Instead, Brett does acknowledge it, and says the situation (that management caused) _sucks._ It doesn’t benefit the company to say that. I mean, he even says you can direct your ire to him on Twitter because he can take it. Do you think management would’ve forced him to say “direct anger/harassment towards me”? No way. And if they did enforce strict control to such a ridiculous level as implied, why would they even allow him to say that? It would easily blow back at them.
To be fair, I wouldn’t want to have my handle shoved in peoples faces after what happened. Wouldn’t want to have more bile shoved in my face as the first person in the forefront of this.
I can say as fact that you read too hard into this.
If buying isn't owning, then pirating isn't stealing
This is a fallacy. Don’t think of yourself as buying the digital game; you’re leasing it.
@@bird3713 I'm not pirating, I'm just borrowing.
@@bird3713What does that change? It still gives people an incentive to buy it physically
@@kievkim8895 I agree - if you're concerned about the situation, buy a physical copy. But I have a tendency to put my foot down when people try to justify piracy.
Technically you're not. In many jurisdictions, you'd be liable for copyright infringement and open to civil suit, not necessarily criminal sanctions.
Blink twice if Gamurs is holding you against your will
What The Escapist higher ups did was definitely no good, but be civil with content creators here. They are not The Escapist higher ups, so don't dislike for disliking sake. Don't send vitriol their way.
Can I ask what happened? I'm a little new here.
@@doodlebug4360 The previous content creators (mainly Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation) left the team after some higher up shenanigans. They then formed Second Wind, where everyone mostly resides and is doing well for themselves.
Let's be honest. The punishment they got by everyone, especially Yahtzee, leaving was enough.
And that was Gmers, the owners of the Escapist.
@@MoonSpiritChannel To be clear, they left in solidarity when the editor-in-chief, Nick Calandra, who worked his ass off for several years to revitalize the channel & community, was unceremoniously shittcanned by the Gamurs Group higher ups

No it doesn't
losing access to something you bought is drama. huge drama in fact and needs attention.
I agree
Clearly deleting comments lmao
This isn't a bad video but it feels kind of generic. It's mostly just a guy looking into a camera with the "All digital future" scenes. The previous team has a real style to there videos and editing that felt like you couldn't get anywhere else. This one felt like it could be any random video you see on the side bar by a youtuber you've never heard of before. I don't want to be rude to this guy, he's doing the best with what he's been given but this really wasn't the big come back that this channel needed after being dormant for months.
Well said! The guy isn't doing anything wrong or bad, it's just unfortunate that he's tied to a company that is associated with such an...unpleasant reputation.
As with everyone at The Escapist, I hope he gets out to better use his skills elsewhere!
It would be nice if this guy introduced himself first to hold out an olive branch to the understandably pissed off audience. Ya no let us get to him first instead of acting like he's been doing this all along hoping we wouldn't notice.
That all happens at the end of the video, very blatantly.
Brett has been making videos for Destructoid for a long time
Frost talked about all of this on his consumer rights needs to catch up video.
But kudos on being the first soldier stepping out of the trenches Brett.
The Frost video had so much style. I’m sorry but this feels very generic.
Hey, great video and good job addressing the situation at the end. I think everybody on Second Wind is working hard and doing great on their new venture. And I hope the remaining staff on The Escapist can make this work, good luck!
It was a very civil way of handling it. Comment section seems civil too, which is nice.
Whats scarier, when you have a physical copy, but the console refuses to play it due to some bullsh*t update imposed by the publisher 🤬
Further proving that everyone currently shouting "buy physical!" are only a minority as well as just plain wrong that still buying physical circumvents anything. We need some sort of legal regulation to actually make the gaming industry less predatory.
Pc games are less likely to have this issue, and live service games are the most problematic. It’s why internet connection required single player only games are stupid.
@@Skigresswhich is sort of ironic since PC games are mostly digital. Steam has been incredible for game preservation. Arkham Origins and its DLC would inaccessible to most players if it weren’t for Steam.

Not a fan of clickbaity thumbnails and titles. But i guess its closer to how written articles typically work huh?
This is just sad man. They're sending out new material knowing full well it'll be massacred because this channel was gutted by its upper management. RIP The Escapist.
Stay civil, people. The eyes reading your comments are not the eyes of people responsible for the pent-up mood that made you write them.
Duck my sick.
Sure, we are staying civil. In the most civil manner possible, I will express my disappointment over the death of this channel, its flagship series, and the immense potential it gained with its new talent, at the hands of careless corporate fools.
true Gamers love sticking up for low-level workers against their greedy bosses... by rabidly abusing low-level workers and doing everything to destroy their lives
@@mauromerconchini I just jumped ship to Second Wind. That was very civil. Mwah ha ha.
On the other hand those responsible can just post again that they were horribly attacked, regardless if that is true or not. So maybe we should just be civil for ourselves.
I suggest all The Escapist fans download all you can: old Jimquisitions, ZPs, Adventure Is Nigh clips, Rhymedown Spectacular, etc. Just in case...
Grabbed all of the ZP compilations as soon as the news dropped
Second Wind is going to re-release and remaster Adventure is Nigh
And best of all... JUDGING BY THE COVER.
You ever go to a friend’s house, and they have like a 17 year old dog? And it’s like, practically dead. And they’re like “OOOOH HERE’S MY LIL BABY PUPPY.” And you’re uncomfortably like “oooooh . . . Yeah he’s so cute. Ooooop he’s leaking blood on your carpet.”
That’s kinda how I think about the escapist.
Yeah, it's sad to see... but at the same time, whenever I remember that it exists I'm compelled to peek over there and see if it's still clinging to life. At this point I'm not sure whether it's just *filled with determination* or if the owner is tasering it back to life every time its eyelids start to droop.
Who is this?
This is why physical preservation is a must.
Absolutely. Goes for everything - books, files, photos.
Not really.
Drama aside, I'm just curious where the direction of this channel is heading right now.
I am a mix between physical and digital ownership. I have a library of physical games for console but fully digital on PC. Honestly, De-listing games is actually why I still buy physical copies when I can. Ironically it is the online games I would most likely buy a digital copy of and see it just going down someday. A good example for me would be Dreadnought which I played on the Playstation. Fun game which I loved, but no fully online game can last forever and thus it shut down. The difference between Dreadnought and the games you listed were that my game that I downloaded, despite being unable to connect to nonexistent servers, was still in my library. The fact that companies are starting to test the waters on delisting games you paid for is frightening.
The truly concerning thing is, that in some instances buying physical isn't even buying physical anymore, at least on PC
Most PC games you buy physical still have some form of code for a launcher it needs to be attached to, like Steam. So even if you have a physical game, for it to function it still needs to go through a launcher meaning it's still partially digital. It's truly crazy
@@xandernightmare4985 That also dives into disc based media for console games as well. The Disc is more the activation key rather than the actual data for the game.
as a avid gamer, as soon as i lose access to my games i will turn in to a pirate and never buy a single game ever anymore!
i payed for all of my games and the ones i hold dearly i even bought multiple times so i can enjoy them on several platforms.
piracy is a service problem, remember this you greedy f turds.
Really, what do they wanna do? Tell me I should have bought the game instead? On which store, the one they pulled it from?
I got called stupid by so many people because I refused to buy a product that wasn't physical. I don't even feel vindicated by this, I just feel depressed. I also got called stupid for prodicting that cash was going to become useless, and we where going to move to an all credit systm. Take that for what you will.
I've been telling my friends all digital is a bad idea for years. If anyone is shocked or worried that all digital is fully anti-consumer well then, you clearly don't pay attention.
As someone who has very little storage space, only has digital cpnsoles, and sold most of my physucal copies because I have no space for them, you're absolutely right. Physical media is very important and I hope there are people out their preserving their favourite physical media, its the only true way to own (most) things.
@@theoutsiderprod 12 years ago I joined the digital music wave, selling off all my cd's. I regret it to this this day and am trying to restock, purchasing random ones on ebay or at thift stores. If anyone reads this, don't make the same mistake.
It's the copy protection that sucks. If you have access to the actual files of something, you can do whatever you want including making disks so it's inherently better. To really have control of our media and truly preserve it, we have to support sources like GOG and itch for games, and bandcamp for music. Stores that don't enforce DRM.
@JrIcify that's true. I remember epic buying band camp and gutting it though, I'm unsure of the state it is in right now
Name 1 thing that a company has stole FROM YOU that you already purchased digitally
Happened to me with Battleborn, which had a great 5 players co-op campaign, but now I can't even play it solo because it's completely shut down.
That's why I mostly use game pass now. If I don't own my digital games, better just pay for a subscription service, play what I want, then move on
I wish you the best of luck, Mr. Brett, but I advise that at the first opportune moment you escape from, well, Escapist.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I can definitely say that this guy is a trooper for doing this..
If he was a trooper, he would've joined Second Wind too, no?
This was a good vid and I'm sure most people watching are willing to give the new content a chance, but what seemed weird to me was Brett asking the audience to air their grievances to him directly. Wouldn't that criticism be better off to the Escapist, rather than directing it all at this one guy? I hope this isn't the company's attempt at diverting negative attention away from the escapist and toward one fall guy.
Writers & editors of this video should be *politely* warned that the call is coming from inside the house on this one. Escapist/Gamurs (the company) are engaging in the same horrible business tactics as the gaming industry as a whole during the transition to fully digital gaming.
Somewhere J-Steph Sterling is chuckling to their self going “Just noticed, did you?”
The Cassandra of videogames has done it again
I see a lot of “be civil to the content creators”, and while I very much agreed with that; you can still be a content creator, and not part of a nutritiously bad network.
Tbh this is partly why I always liked to buy Switch cartridges instead of online store when I learned that they are account bounded, feels so much better.
That and Im so sad Spec Ops The Line is gone from Steam.
I'm 99% sure it's still on the Xbox 360 store... which will shut in late July. Oh well.
This guy seems pretty cool. Perhaps he should "escape" and find a "second wind"? Just an idea...
Welcome new guy. Hope everyone's treating you well
No disrespect intended to the fella in this video but screw the Escapist.
This is why I always make sure to buy a physical cartridge or disk for every game I can get, I can count on one hand the number of digital only titles I have.
Yahtzee was the Escapist
good luck guy, I hope the best for escapist employees. you all deserve better, I will not be watching. god speed.
Fitting that this video is about corporations revoking access to things you thought you owned, and Second Wind is creator-owned. It's a metaphor for digital/physical.
beard guy is good. good luck beard guy. I'm out.
Homie I hope they pay you fairly. Seems to be a decent enough video.
Buried deep in the EULA that no one ever reads it says something about you not buying a game, but a license to play the game that can be revoked at any time for no reason. It was bullshit then but we didn't say anything. Now they're taking our games from us for no reason.
Good on Nick for his statement, wish you guys the best on the new videos!
I wouldn't have known about this video without hearing about it from Second Wind but I didn't come here to be a dick. I wanted genuinely to see what was the first step since the split. It's maybe unpolished, feels off the cuff as mentioned in the ending, and it's... Fine? But it isn't special, and I wish so very much luck to the crew at the Escapist in finding that special spark to make your vids shine apart from everyone else. Much love!
Give Brett a chance yall. He's a good dude.
You're a good man, RGT. There are people whose livelihoods depend on this channel. They weren’t involved in, or had the ability to change, what went down. I’d hate to punish them for something they couldn’t control. This was a solid video.
Absolutely, there are decent folk on the other side of this mess at no fault and are just trying to do their job.
I like him. I didn't know he was associated with The Escapist.
I like him. I'd just rather watch him on his own channel rather than the Escapist.
Exactly, this brand is honestly the worst to be affliated with, all considered, since ever evenn going back to 2010s when they refused to pay extra credits @DrRyan
Good video, but I would have appreciated a very short intro as to who you are given the channel reboot, then the statement at the end.
Do NOT harass this guy! He's doing his best. He's not the one who fired Nick.
Much respect for properly acknowledging the changeover. While Im not pleased with the growth chasing execs, that's got little to do with you or the writers at the escapist. I hope you make content you're proud of and rebuild the channel.
I've been skeptical of all digital for a while but it's really come to a head with the push for an all streaming future. Absolutely hate that and it's made me skeptical of the idea of what Microsoft wants Gamepass to be in say, 10 years as opposed to now
Great video, Brett! Good luck with your future uploads!
We old ass boomers saw this coming ages ago. We tried to warn people but mostly only got laughed at. Well, here we are at the glorious all digital future which is not that glorious after all. After the last copy of physical game is produced, corporations will start screwing consumers' rights and buttholes even harder.
The sad thing is that for next gaming generation this will be normal as they don't know any better. We others will be left wondering how the hell we let things progress to this point.
I know right.
And you know what makes even less sense. The digital copies cost MORE than the physical copies! I'm not even joking, you can pay £60 for Red Dead Redemption 2 digitally right now, or £20 physically!
I always assumed that the digital versions would cost less to buy. I mean they don't have to make the disc, they don't have to be delivered, they don't have to take any shelf space, and the publisher gets a larger cut of the profit overall. So logically, I assumed that everyone was going crazy for digital because it was cheaper. But then I started looking at digital games thanks to those Microsoft Reward points, and was shocked to find the opposite was true.
So I honestly have no idea why anyone bought into this digital only crap to begin with! Was it purely because it's slightly more convenient?
I buy digital on PC and physical on console. If Steam ever goes under, there are certain... ways... to get new digital copies of the games I've already paid for without buying them a second time.
Sail the digital sea my friends 🏴☠️ That's the only way to save your games
Pretty good actually, I’m interested to see what the channel turns into
Good luck to those stepping into this million-plus sub channel to try and keep it afloat, but this style isnt for me so I'm out
The only person on steam slightly on the consumer side on steam is lord Gabe. The day he leaves this earth and Valve goes public we're all gonna have to pay a subscription to keep accessing our games
Good and important topic that needs to addressed more.
Also, I'm glad the change was acknowledged. I'll stick around as long as real reporting is being done. It's not like I can't follow a few different channels.
I tried to warn people about the digital nightmare ten years ago and everybody said I was crazy..........
So SO many were wrong and naive, companies are NEVER your friends and unless you have physical copy without DRM, you do NOT own it. You only have a license to use it until that license is revoked by the issuer.
Hey Brett. Really enjoyed the video. Not planning on following The Escapist channel as I don't like what Gamurs Group did to the original staff. It definitely wasn't a both sides thing, but I understand that Gamurs Group is writing your paycheck now, so you had to frame it like that. Just wanted to wish you luck and send some appreciation for being the first person to put yourself out there on this new iteration of the channel... not an easy thing to do. I will continue to beat the drum for physical media, as I have my entire life.
Ross Scott was always right
I was a viewer of the Escapist during the Zero Punctuation era, I followed the team to Second Wind. I sincerely hope that Corporate & the Higher-ups have learnt a lesson, we came here not for the brand name "The Escapist" but for the content creators and community they were able to build. Give them space and time to breath and build back to something great. If you try to squeeze money out of them or keep a strangle hold on them, disallowing creative freedom you (Corporate) will end up killing The Escapist branding.
I've got a few little things I want to point out as constructive feedback.
-The "All digital gaming future" gag got old really fast.
The second thing I want to point out:
-Who's "I" in this situation? I don't know who this presenter is. They didn't get to introduce themselves upfront. Who's opinion piece am I listening to? Like I mentioned earlier, I at the very least am here not for "The Escapist" I'm here for the presenter. Only at the end of the video do I get to know his Name. (Hi Brett)
But I want to see him build his own brand within The Escapist, something as simple as a solid idea for a series would really have let this feel more cohesive. I know other comments have mentioned it, but this felt really generic, a run of the mill everyday video. Not a relaunch of a Content host, this felt like a flop, not because of the content of the video or presenter, but because it's a one and done. I don't know if I'll see Brett again on the channel, I don't know what series I should look for if I want to see him presenting his pieces.
I'm disappointed, I do legitimately want to see these people succeed and build something awesome.
I do think Brett has room to improve, it's a really solid core idea, opinions on gaming news from an everyday gamer, not someone with rooms full of games, an everyday gamer. Brett's got good camera presence and a good narration voice and cadence. However I feel he needs something to rally around he has a good show, good presentation, but no brand outside of "The Escapist" which isn't a person, it's a content host.
Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw had Zero Punctuation the Series, and Yahtzee the character.
Brett doesn't have something like that yet. So far he has "The first presenter after the Second Wind split." and I really want him and the others to have the opportunity to build something similar to what the previous team had.
You mean “Cockecond Wind”.
Great video dude. I honestly just forgot to unsubscribe, but I'm glad I didn't. Keep up the good work
You seem like a cool guy and the video was good i wish you the best bud
I think the thumbnail could be...a little less CZcams stereotypical, but you did a good job and the information discussed in the video was pretty insightful.
Good luck to ya, man.
This is something that need to be brought up to legislature. More laws on consumer protection and ownership. If you own a car, fully paid for up front, should a manufacturer come a take it away without compensation? No. So digital mediums should be not an exception.
Was not expecting 25th ward music lmao
Since i sold my Xbox one and went 100% PC only, using Steam, it took me a while to get used to digital only games, and i kinda miss being able to sell them once i'm done, but since Steam has been around for so long, and PCs will (almost) always be able to play steam titles, i dont find it as problematic as having digital games on consoles with a limited shelf life. Its still annoying when games get altered to remove things though, but consoles would probably do that too, since theyre always connected to the internet and are regularly updated.
Good to see you're still going ahead and making video content after the big exodus. You did well Brett, and i enjoyed the video. Best of luck with future posts!
Wait didn't cold take make a video exactly about this?
Cool to see the new team coming in. Best case scenario management learned their lesson last time and will be a luttle more hands-off with you guys, and we'll have two solid channels.
There's an incentive to not delist games, the consumer won't like it. They'll talk about cases where it happens, in youtube video essays and comment sections like this, and avoid buying from the publishers who do it. Same argument against planned obsolescence being a real problem, if a car was designed to break down so you have to buy it again, you'd tell everyone not to buy it and their competitors would get more business.
Just so you know, even buying a physical copy of a game doesn't really guarantee ownership. All one is essentially doing is buying a license to access that content. So yeah, whether one's preference is primarily digital or physical, they will remain in the same boat.
While this is technically true it is far more difficult for a company to enforce the licensing agreement on physical products, and really the gaming space is the only one that has even sort of tried to enforce it with day 1 updates and always online gimmicks, all to brick undated disks and to stop people bypassing updates by staying offline.
Well two points:
1. PC Games have no option for physical ownership, which sucks for it being the highest quality option for games.
2. Physical ownership doesn't even guarantee ownership in the current era, where Devs/Publishers just release a patch that makes the game unplayable.
Physical will never come back to fix these problems. We need a digital solution. Like GOG's DRM free model.
I’m not ready to resub, but you seem like a chill dude and I really respect your directness there at the end of the video.
Also yeah, I’ve always hated this all digital nonsense lol my ass still wishes we were playing with cartridges 😂😂
The Final Fantasy thing is a shitty example of a change in a game. Duke Nukem 3D's Atomic Edition and Megaton Edition disappeared from 90% of storefronts after the shitty Anniversary Edition was released by Gearbox.
My main thing with physical games verus digital is that I grew up with it and my sister did not really. She gets digital stuff and than I cant try them out or play them if she is done with it. Same with my friends. With money as tight as it is sharing games is just a nice bonus.
I really liked the video and I agree with digital versus physical. The one thing I saw was that I went to go buy a PS5 and saw a digital and physical version. To me thats insane how much more money it costs to include a disk tray/reader, I know there is more to it, but still insane. I can play all my old physical games without risk of ever losing the digital library when Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft/etc click the button to remove it from library forever cause times have changed and a character or storyline is no longer seen as acceptable is removed.
Never trust a corporation. Literally never. Big businesses will do whatever they want, whenever they want, and will face no consequences.
This comment is so close to home here that I think it qualifies as meta.
Solid video on an important topic. As a literally all digital gamer, this stuff definitely sucks.
I really do miss physical media. Some of the games I still have on my shelf havent been ported to digital form so far as I know. So I might never see them again, except on my shelf, for a console that they don't make anymore.
But I own them. Which is a hell of a lot better than them being arbitrarily deleted from my collection.
Oh man, they're making them so young these days. I'm feeling old over here. Good luck man, you don't deserve any of this baggage so just make the best videos you can. I'm rootin' for ya.
Great video! Nice LSM shirt repping too haha. Honestly a lot of this kind of stuff has contributed to me feeling pretty negative about modern gaming. It has led to me really retreating back to retro stuff and backlog games. The industry is in a really lousy place right now. Losing creativity, greed, laziness. It sucks.
This is why I have a 4TB hard drive with my GOG backup installers.
If streaming is the future, I'll quit gaming.
It's hard because a lot of the games I've been getting into lately are lower budget indie titles that simply don't HAVE physical copies. I would love a physical copy of games like Have a Nice Death, Dredge, and the upcoming PS4 remaster of Monster Hunter Stories but the only games that seem to get physical releases lately are the big ticket AAA titles I honestly have no interest in.
The only platform I go all digital is PC. For any of my consoles, I usually go for a mix between digital and physical to minimize risk. Unless it's a case where the disc is missing some of the key content (like Jedi Survivor), I tend to veer towards physical
Thanks for reminding me I was still subscribed to this channel. Fixed that.
Bit too much of the "All digital future" yelling. It's not 2015 anymore.
Still, you're here and you made some good content. I respect your effort, but not your management.
Good luck with the uphill battle you've signed up for. I'll keep watching for now.
Love the shirt!
Even if you own the disc you won't get the updates for the game. When was the last time a game didn't come with a day one patch. So digital vs disc doesn't really matter.
1:51 I was more surprised than i should've been when i saw whose footage this was
I mean, when you need WiiU footage, you go to the guy who owns a dozen WiiUs
No hate towards any new hosts of people working on content creation at the escapists now, lets just hope the corporate overlords learnt their lesson and start treating their staff right. If not you guys need out, there's talent there and plenty of better ways to use it than to make gamurs higher ups richer
Maybe tone down the "joke" of screaming the "point of the video" every two minutes. It's annoying.
Other than that, good luck with the videos, I'll take a look. Maybe I can add them to my weekly digest of games related yt content 🙂
Pretty good talk. It made me actually consider rejecting any kind of DRM for games and hardware I obtain from his point forward. The future of mainstream gaming will only become shittier and shittier.
This right here. This is why I don't listen to the people telling me to get rid of old games/movies, because "you can just stream it"
Decent video, hope you don't get any hate comments on Twitter
