We have honeycomb shelves plans so you can easily build this DIY hexagon honeycomb shelves with just a few tools! These honeycomb shelves have been a fairly popular style, but weâve never seen them made into a proper piece of furniture. The only direction we were given from our client for this project was to incorporate the hexagon shapes into a bookshelf. We wanted the hexagons to be the main appeal of this piece, which is why we went with some subtle tapered legs.

This project was awesome! However, Iâm sure there are many people who passed it by just because of how you titled it. This video was titled: âwhy do people make this so difficult?â I almost passed on this one, because of the title. Tell people what youâre making.
Excellent video and information. Never knew why it was a 30 deg cut until today! Thank you.
Glad you found it helpful! Iâve got a ton of other woodworking projects too đ
Nice job. The one design I have yet to build. Will have to put this on my list of things to build.
Thanks for the video.
Iâm just starting out and you do a great job explaining everythingâŚthank you!
Thank you very much! Iâve got a ton of other videos too đ
turned out amazing! đ I definitely keep that jig for the tapered legs in mind, very clever solution! đ
Thank you! Making tapered legs like that is super super easy!
I followed your process on Instagram for this project and it came out great! It gave me an idea for a home project I want to try.
Thatâs awesome Kenneth! Tag us on Instagram when itâs done so we can check it out!
I'm actually in the process of making this!! It has been very fun and I will be posting pictures on Instagram!! Thanks for the designs!
Sure thing! Make sure to tag us so we can check it out! đ
I'm in awe.....A W E.....of your tools and equipment. It seems a world of difference in my Craftsman table saw. Geeeeeez, I wonder why. Your project was.....AWSOME!
Looks great! Well done!
Thank you very much Jaren!
man this is awesome! Good luck with your channel!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate you saying that. Itâs be a grind making almost 60 videos and having so few subscribers, but itâll pay off eventually đ
Man that turned out amazing đ nicely done really like the color too, that came out great, and awesome video of the process đđ
Thanks Justin! Hopefully the video was more entertaining than actually building it was đ¤Ł
Very cool project, guys! I've actually been brainstorming a similar project for my office. Basically some honeycomb wall shelves, but I want to paint them to give the room a pop of color. Awesome work!
Thanks for checking out the video! Painting them would be really cool especially if they had different colors on each one to really make them pop đ
@@SpencleyDesignCo What I'm thinking is a white base coat then coming back with all different colors splattered on and run down. Kind of an "artsy" piece haha.
Now youâre talking!!!!
Like it. Simple and elegant. But not what I'd call a bookcase - more of an ornaments display system
I like this design.
Thanks James! Glad you enjoyed it
Dammmmm... first video I watch from your channel and dammmm you really explain EVERYTHING so well. Looking forward to watch tons more of your videos. For now Iâll be busy on the ones you already haveđđťđđť GOOD BLESS đđť oh and Iâll try and make this same project. Just started doing some woodwork maybe I can get to your level lol
Thanks for checking out that channel, Jose! Youâll be busy for quite awhile with the 60 videos that I have out already. Iâll be putting out about 5 videos in January and Iâve got TONS more planned
love how you present your content and processes. The bookcases turned out great!
Thank you very much! I really appreciate the support! I have a ton more projects on my channel that you might like too đ
Can I say I appreciate all
the detail in explaning the math...
Can I say thank youâŚ
How did you get it to bond together so strong? Mine are so flimsy and I dont understand why. I use glue and a Brad Nailer but it still comes apart easily.
Where are you getting Baltic birch here in Columbus? I can't even find expensive stuff
that turned out amazing! i have to figure out a way to join them since i dont have a domino tool. also, do you recommend using pre stain conditioner on 1 by's or 2 by's board purchased from home depot? i normally sand with 120+220 then straight to oil based stain and clear. i make farmhouse or rustic style pieces.
You really donât need the domino. Thatâs why I did the test to show how strong it was without them!
For that type of piece, having uneven and blotchy stain is pretty common so you probably will be fine without the pre stain conditioner
really cool tutorial . very very useful for a youtube woodworker newbee like me .
Thank you very much!
Very creative idea
Thank you very much! I appreciate the support
What domino cutter is that?
It came out nice, but think how amazing it would be with real wood! Like walnut, that would be pretty sweet.
Hi, can I know how many mm wood you using
I wonder how much outward pressure they would take? I am thinking of making these and filling each honeycomb with wine bottles which would have some outward pressure as well as the downward pressure when stacked. Obviously it would be better if it was trapped between two walls but or a outer box type walls built around it but still I wonder about the outward strength. What do you think?
I honestly couldnât give you any quantifiable answer to that, but I doubt youâd run into any failure. Iâd just build a test piece and see if itâs strong enough. Iâm sure it will be đ
So freakin cool Bud. What a dope project. What would be your thoughts on having varying depth hexagons all mounted together?? Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
Thanks for the support and checking out the channel! That was actually the ides that I pitched to the client, but they didnât like it đ¤ˇââď¸
@@SpencleyDesignCo So you would say Yes right?? And possibly leaving some half hexagons on top level for possible long flat surface. Either way still super Dope shelves!! Still have a ton of videos to catch up on!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out again!!
Yeah it would definitely work! I like all those ideas!
Dude!, great tip. Set the blade at 29.5. Of course.
Iâm glad you found it helpful! Any videos youâd like to see in the future?
Just a quick update my wife and I built four out of six honeycombs today (2 to go ) but using your tip, they came out great.
Awesome! Iâm glad to hear it!
I noticed that you applied the conditioner and stain by hand and polyurethane by the paint gun..any reason you didn't use the paint gun for conditioner and staining ?
Good question! To be honest, I donât know if you can apply the conditioner by hand đ¤ˇââď¸. I imagine it probably could, but I think this is only the second project Iâve ever used stain for since I always refuse to do it for clients because itâs such a pain. Iâm just not well educated on all the methods of application.
For the stain though, my entire garage wouldâve been painted in brown speckles unless I Dexter-fied everything with plastic tarps. Spraying a clear polyurethane isnât that big of deal because the tiny spots wonât really be visible on the walls and floors.
I hope that helped shed some insight as to what we going through my head đ
Thank you...it makes sense...i love the design and will make one for me đ
Sweet! I appreciate the support! Send it to me on Instagram when youâre finished! @spencleydesignco
How long the pieces are?
Iâm not sure which piece you are referring too?
Terima kasih sudah berbagi ilmunya, sangat bermanfaat.penjelasan sangat mudah dipahami đđđ
Well said
Couldnât you have made this without the center hexagon?
Iâm slow: is the saw blade set at 30* or 60*? The video makes it sound like you set it to 30* but tablesaw blades donât tilt to 30*âŚ
Super đˇđ
đđđđđ
I like the project, just 1 critique. You zeroâd the angle gauge on the blade. Youâre supposed to zero it in the table and then put it on the blade. I know you got the blade square prior to the first set of cuts. Itâs probably a negligible difference but a good habit to zero on the table and then attach to the blade.
Thanks for checking out the video Riley!
Letâs first say how awesome Patagonia hats are! Really great job with the unit and the video. You know your stuff! I saw this on r/mead so you know I gotta ask if you possibly take custom orders. Iâm putting the walls up on my nano Meadery and Iâd be cool as hell to have a few honeycomb storage units.
Hi, Adam! Thanks so much for checking out the video! I definitely take custom orders. Thereâs a custom inquiry form on our website at spencleydesignco.com/contact

Is this resistant to water
Thanks for checking out the video! Yes, I finished this piece with polyurethane which is a water resistant finish.
@@SpencleyDesignCo thank you
Sure thing! If you have any other questions, donât hesitate to reach out
@@SpencleyDesignCo thanks just one more thing what wood did you use
Itâs called Baltic birch plywood. The base is made from hard maple
Must be a advertisement for that digital level, never use digital levels to square up your table saws blade I know you want to show off your new gadget but use a good old square, for one the garage floor is definitely at a slope and two the table that the table saw sits on isnât level
Awesome tutorial and production quality, but why the obnoxious clickbait-esque title? This is limiting your visibility for those looking for a video like this based on specific keywords.. but I could be wrong. I noticed this trend among most of your videos. I don't think your key audience is after those social media shockers, but rather quality content to learn from. Just my two cents.
I don't get why the title of this video is: why I quit building for clients? Also, you have a newer video on your channel where you are: Building a wine rack "for a client". Change of heart?
This video is 2 years old. He has a love and passion for the art. Maybe he wanted to walk away because he was leaning more into catering to clients and furthur away from his creativity. Maybe he found a way to do both. Maybe he grew or made some changes to how he does his work. Dont really think we need to imply that this is bullshit in some way
I'm watching this video now (3.1.2023) and now it has the title "stop wasting your time building for clients".
I don't know if the title has been changed. But in any case. I don't understand this title, nor eventually the former (original) one.
Looking at it 1/5/23 title is "why do people make this so difficult"...guessing he changes title to get hits or to pop up where it may not usually pop up...kinda feeling click bait(y)
Do NOT make disparaging remarks about my favorite cereal... Unsubscribed!!!
You do really do great work but the BS Click Bait titles are a pita. Why could this not have been titled hexagon honeycomb shelves?
No Sub here.
