The XF35 f/1.4 was my first Fuji prime to add to the 18-55 kit for my X-E1. I bought the XF35 f/2 when I needed the focus speed and weatherproofing for covering bicycle races, with the X-T1. For everything but sports I still grab the f/1.4 first, it is the character of that lens.

Im here exactly because Im a passionate cyclist and looking for answers as to if the 35 f2 will work for me on the bike, I have the 23 f1.4 but its not weather resistant and the AF in contineus doesnt quite nail it everytime... is there somewhere where I can see your shots? thanx

The 35mm f1.4 is a great lens and that's the reason why it's not discontinued and why Fuji will keep producing it despite the new 33mm but the truth is I'm happy with the f2 version and seldom use the older version and the same goes for all the f2 Fuji lenses except for the 16mm f1.4 which is so superior to the f2.8 version. Anyway thanks for the review! Cheers!

I own both and agree... buy both!
I had the XF f/2 for years before getting the f/1.4 based on the hype. The hype is true! Not a single regret for the costly redundancy.
Love both, but the faster lens is on the camera 80% of the time. The f/2 comes out when weather is a factor because its weather resistant.

Congrats on your silver! I have the XC35 f2 , which coupled to my X-Pro1 is a great combo. Not had them very long but had some very pleasing results at the Revival last weekend.

i have an X-T20 to play around with personally went I don't want to lug my Canon full frame kit. I have the 16-50mm and made the XF 35mm F/2 my first prime. I really enjoy it. It's a solid lens. The AF is snappy, its sharp and the contrast is good. I'm using it for travel, personal casual shooting and some street photography. So far so good. I've found myself mostly shooting Acros which has been just beautiful.

Hello @@ChrisOrange, I follow your videos since the beginning. And this is the first time I notice such beautiful "film simulation" in your portraits. I mean: during the anniversary of your friends, the profil/preset you used is... absolutely gorgeous! How did you get that? 😳
      1) settings on-camera?
      2) presets in post-production?
Could you please give me/us more information about that? What recipe did you used? The results are very film-alike, and very appealing. Thanks for your good work and see you soon.
      From France, Cyril.

Can the 35 1.4 keep up with documenting family life (kids age 2-7) for photo and video, as a one camera (XT 5) one lens solution, or should I sacrifice the special qualities and go with the 2.0, or perhaps even the 33 1.4? Thank you.

    • @ChrisOrange

35 1.4 has analogue character, like getting your turntable out and listening to vinyl records again, that warmth. Pair it with X-t1 with classic chrome, then go to the beach. Or with newer Fuji cams, shoot classic neg or nostalgic neg.

I have got both. The 35mm f2 is sharper. The 35 f1.4 has more character and a less digital look to it's images. The 35 f2 excels outdoors in sunshine. Bags of contrast and pin sharp. The 35 f1.4 is unbeatable indoors... bokeh and filmic look... fabulous.

This lens is drawing me crazy 😀 i have 18f2, xc35f2, 50f2. But i want that 1.4. xc35 is quick and "do everything" lens. I am using it for quick snaps in busy places or events. My 50f2 also is quick, but dedicated for bokeh and portraits (nothing professional, just kids, wife or friends). I wonder, if i swap xc to 1.4, maybe it would serve as my portrait lens instead of my 50f2 and i can sell it. For that money i can get also quick 23f2 (35f2 sometimes is not wide enough and my 18f2 is sometimes too wide). So 23 will serve as quick snap in action and 351.4 for bokeh, portrait, and special " art" 😀 i love character of 18f2, this is my most loved one. 35 1.4 may suit wery well with it. Is it a good plan? What do you think? 😀

my favorite lens by far the 1.4. Some of my favorites include the 23mm f.2 and the 80mm f2.8 macro. I think my next lens will be the 16mm f1.4. Also just purchased an XE-1 on your recommendation. Cant wat to try the legendary xtrans 1 sensor.

  • @The-Trouble-with-Tribbles

The 35mm f/1.4 lens is optically corrected for distortion. The 35mm f/2 lens is not; it has significant barrel distortion. Correction is applied to JPEGs in-camera, resulting in cropping of the original image.

Ah, the character and magic… is it 1.4 or is it in the lens? They have said the same of my Contax/Yashica (Zeiss) 50 1.4 and 85 1.4 and those lenses are gorgeous - but when I’ve nailed the shot, the magic has been within me, not my kit. That said, an excellent street shooter, Mel Breyer almost shot exclusively with the 35 1.4 till she switched to, drum roll, Sony…
