The 35 has much nicer separation, it's great for people and candid photography since you don't have to be that close. The separation and field of view is such that the images feel more alive when viewing them, you can feel like you are there in the shot, it feels 3D. In comparison the photos I get from the 23 are a bit bland and flat, like a boring phone snap. Maybe it's my technique, it certainly requires better skills to get an interesting composition, but it's hard to get that separation. Also, getting real close to fill the frame is like real close, inches from someone's face, so it's harder not to disrupt your subjects, like my family and kids. That being said, I did purchase the new x100 because of compactness and other features, and even though the ND filter enables me to shoot wide open, I'm considering getting the TCL to fill that need for candid portraits. One interesting method I saw see online is that you can approximate the 35 framing on 23 by shooting vertical and cropping the top and bottom, it's a helpful composition tool.

You need to add 50mm f/2 to the Fuji. Mate, without the 50mm f/2, you are missing a lot. What a banger of a lens it is! I have them all, and the compression, quality glass, and color rendering of 50 f/2 are on another level. BTW, I love your videos. Peace!!

I think the 50mm's performance is basically top 5 of all Fuji lenses. Possibly top 3

50 f2 is one of the best lenses I’ve ever used. It’s a great glass.

New to photography and ordered a XT5 with lense kit. For a prime I bought the 33mm. Is the 33 a good lense? Thanks 😅

    Can't Fuji just do a 27mm F2 and we'd all be happy?

Man my xf23mm f2 has been with me for years across multiple countries. Got it for a good price too, so many available on tbe used market.
    Can't commend it enough.

Hey great shots and great review. I wonder why youtube always converts focal lengths to full frame though. Fullframe is way to bulky for travel :)

THanks Matty for this video. I just bought the 35m 1.4 and I have the 35mm f2.0. I'm looking to add the 23mm. I have 16mm-80mm f/4 which has it's positives, but the negative for me is the bulk .. I like the reach, but honestly I don't use the reach that much. When I went to Costa Rica, I didn't have long zoom lens, to capture seeing bats and hummingbirds, the guide just used his telescope to show me and I just put my iphone len on the telescope to capture video; that was enough

Ahhh totally feel you! That's the thing with gear hey, there's always a tradeoff no matter what price point / focal length!

I have Sigma 18-50 and Xc35mm for my XS-10 . Planning to get Sigma 23mm1.4 or viltrox 27mm 1.2. which one is better?

    23mm . I've had the f2 but i bought the new 23mm F 1.4 and its amazingly sharp. Like in a different league than any other lens i've owned. Maybe it's because i still use an X-E1 16mp camera idk. I also have the 35 f2 , 27mm 2.8 & the 18-55. 23 is my favorite.

So if you had the x100v and got the TCL converter, you’d have the equivalent of a 35mm and a 50mm correct. Although the TCL is bigger than the prime you’re talking about.

@@patrickdoherty8701 It's less than half of the XF 35mm f2, yet it's still f2. Incredible lens. Also renders colours beautifully. You gotta be okay (or enjoy!) manual focus of course.

Kinda did the same, the Voigt is such a gem of a lens! Sold my 23 (and going to sell my 16 2.8), but still holding on to the 35m.

I have the 35 and took it to an event I was attending and it was a tight space, I looked through the viewfinder and just immediately turned off the camera knowing I wasn’t going to be able to get what I needed. But, it is amazing for so much other stuff, I don’t regret my purchase at all

One thing to call out is the 35mm f2 has a cheaper XC version where while the optics are exactly the same, the body is plastic instead of metal and there is no aperture ring. If you’re fine with that, it’s usually $100-$150 cheaper than the standard lens so you can grab that with the 23 mm f2.

Am I the only one that think these lens are extremely ugly? I still love them though lol.
