I'm a big crisp fan and I notice the difference between brands. I actually like the salt and shake where you can add the amount of salt to your liking. There are some nice tasting crisps available made in Europe too although it's better to buy British when you can of course. Nice to see your subscribers have exceeded 34K. You're a great friendly bloke so I'm not surprised. Have a good Friday evening. 👍

Walkers developed “sun seed” oil years ago. A mix of sunflower and rapeseed. They championed it on their packaging at the time and for a while because it was lower in saturated fat and made a crisper crisp.

I read recently that an Aldi customer bought an Aldi branded multipack of salted nuts, but the individual packs inside were KP branded - some sort of mix up on the packing line. In that case Aldi crisps are probably made by KP as well. Their crisp brands are McCoys and Tyrells

Everything is colour coded - ready salted, red, salt & vinegar green (formerly blue), cheese & onion blue (formerly green), prawn cocktail salmon pink, chicken yellow, smoky bacon reddish-brown …
Have you also noticed that the only flavours of crisps that are labelled “Suitable for vegetarians”, other than ready salted, are the meat-flavoured ones?

I remember growing up as a kid Gaz... And always choosing Walkers Crisps... Except when trying other Maize or Corn based snacks... They were usually made by either KP Crisps or Smiths Crisps like... Outer Spacers... Monster Munch... Horror Bags "Bones"... Horror Bags "Fangs"... Horror Bags "Claws"... Horror Bags "Ribs"... Frazzles... Chipsticks... Sky Divers... Disco's... Quavers... Nik Naks... Hula Hoops... etc. Supermarket own brands back in the 70's were awful... Many of these were soggy and tasteless... As well as many of them having green coloured Crisps due to the lack of quality control... They were cheap!... But they definitely weren't cheerful... But over the years though... Almost all of the supermarkets producing own brand Crisps... Upped their game and are now considered by many to be just as good as the big brand named Crisps... And more people will be willing to give them a try... As we're all becoming victims of high inflation and soaring shopping bills... Why pay triple the price for Walkers Crisps... When the Aldi Crisps are just as good... It's probably down to brand loyalty towards Walkers Crisps... But some are starting to see the light now that our budgets are being stretched... Thanks for the review Gaz... All the best... Cheers mate. 🍺

Another great review. For years I was a Walkers' crisp man, but now I go for the Sainsbury's own label crisps except when the Smith's salt 'n shake are on offer. The last time I bought a Sainsbury's six-pack the price was 85p against about £1.85 for the Walkers'.
If you like Doritos then watch out for the special offer on the "Dippers" packs. Normally these are £2.50 a bag, but Sainsbury's have them at £1.25 fairly regularly. As far as I can tell they are no different to the regular Doritos, so with a bit of care you can pick up a bargain.

There is very little difference in taste so stick with basic supermarket brands if Aldi not near you. You will end up with Walkers in the garage where you buy petrol as their meal deals always include crisps with sandwiches and drink.

Growing up I used to see Golden Wonder Crisps and Smiths only. They used have just three flavours; plain, plain ones with the sachet of salt and cheese and onions.

Great review as always 😊 In these times finding the cheaper brands as good as the Big brands is so important, supermarket brands are well worth trying, Growing up I liked Golden Wonder, and Smiths, never liked Walkers, Seabrooks are good brand to try.

Tudor Crisps - made in Peterlee and now long gone. Bought out by Walkers years ago who used the same factory to produce Walkers crisps which are sadly inferior. Loved the adventurous nature of Tudor with the many different flavours. I even got to taste them before they were produced (if at all in some cases) as an uncle knew someone in their product development kitchen.

Walkers, sunflower and rapeseed in varying proportions. Translated, "we use whatever is cheaper at the moment ". The best, "anything but walkers"

I only like ready-salted and only the hand cooked Kettle crisps or equivalent. The crisps you tested are what I call "mainstream" crisps, the kind you'd get in a pub or cafe. They are okay, but lack the crunch and flavour of Kettle. Now, actually, Tesco produces a very good alternative, namely Tesco Finest Lightly Salted Crisps for £1 for 150g, although the website claims they are out of stock*. Of course, these superior hand cooked crisps work out more expensive than the mainstream ones, but I would rather spend a bit more.
    * Don't always believe a supermarket website that claims a product is out of stock. Several times I've gone to my local Tesco and the product is available on the shelves.

Totally agree. Given the price it is Aldi for the win - however I will admit Walkers and Kettle and all those fancy brands are a bit nicer - just not enough to justify the price hike!

Agreed. Where Ready Salted is concerned they are all pretty much the same. I've bought Walkers and Happy Shopper. Not a lot of difference taste wise but just in price. The only real difference is when you go for flavoured crisps. For me you cannot beat Walkers Cheese and onion or Salt and Vinegar. They are leagues ahead. Solid review mate. Crack on.

I buy the Aldi ones or Tesco Stockwell ones which I find are just as nice as the others. I like the Aldi and Tesco big packs where you get 6 ready salted, 6 smokey bacon etc which works out cheaper.

The kids love the Wotsits branded snacks, we tried them with Snackrite puffs but it was a total fail in the blind test. I have those cheesy puffs myself, but I tried both and would describe the Snackrite as having less density and crunch when compared to the branded Wotsits. Would appreciate if you could do a comparison of four brands of them. Trying to convince the kids that branded doesn't mean better :)

Hi Gareth, I generally choose ready salted but that's because they go with practically most sandwich fillings, the exception being cheese and onion which is a must for a cheese and pickle sarnie. I must admit that I do like a reasonably salty tasting crisp. Cheers to you and good luck for tonight, I'll be tuning in to keep up with the chat.
