Hello/Salut! I just wanted to say that based on your advice(among others) I went ahead and bought my dream car: 123d M Sport with Aerodynamic Pack(very rare). 155k km with oil changes made every 7500km. Keep up the good work! I believe that a lot of your videos may apply to the 1 series as well.

hello, the car i bought (e90 320d LCI 2011) had the chain swapped at 205.000km, now it has 235.000km but it only cost him 500 eur so i am suspicious if the chain is bad quality? should i change it anyway and buy the best quality one?

Thanks for the video. Mine is a 2009 320d N47 with 356000km and original chain. No rattling chain noise. I guess i have to plan replacing it nevertheless.

I thought it was very unlikely that my car would have timing chain problems, it was built in November 2013, but at 130,000 miles/210,000km the chain started to rattle when I started the car from cold. I think every N47 will need chain replacing at some point, it just depends how it's been looked after, if the oil changes are more frequent it'll last longer before it needs changing. Expensive job but once it's done the engine will last a long time.
My BMW (320d, Exclusive edition, 2011, have it for over 3 years) got it's timing chain done at 150k miles, and now I have to change it again (30k miles later) as the sliders torns out and plastic particles choke the oil pump ( the car shows low oil engine pressure ). Never got any problems before that( biggest repair were changing coil springs and shock absorbers), changing oil and filters every 6k miles. Just praying to the Motor Gods the car to stay alive ... 🙏

Nope, they only apply to n47 diesel engine . And for the second question , of course you can just search the vin on the web , but the only way to know for sure is to ask the oem dealer for details about that specific car you want to buy ...

Thanks! Than I'm relieved, because I was looking for a 320i. It seems to be a n46 engine. Do you know if there a problems with the panorama roofs? I read on a forum that someone had a leak and a new one would cost about 2000 euro. Further, some people are complaining about that it's noisy. Think it's better to choose a closed roof, than I'am certain I won't have any problems ;).
if you have a problem with the roof you could easily replace the seals and it will not cost you more than 500 dolars ...max ...even less if you do it by your self.. so go and buy your dream car and don't worry 'cause in most cases there is a easy fix ;)
Hi im looking at a e92 330d manual its got 133thou on clock! The person who's selling it says it got a full service history! Do you think its still worth me buying it?. Even if is as a full service history?? Im worried now about the chain!!

The gearbox has no effect on the chain. just keep an ear out on the engine noise in the morning after cold styart

Well the new kitt commes with the problems fixed so don t worry about that . You will also see that the parts ahave a new design and that means that you have the new ones

now on that I can t help you because the service that changed mine worked with the dealer oem kitts and I wasn t curious enough to look for the name knowing that is the new model ...just go with the bmw dealer recomandation, and don't do it at a normal service because it is a very intricate process and yes it requiers the engine on the tablestand

Hello urbandriver. Thank you very much for the video. I am planning to buy a 2014 bmw 118d urban line(built 29/04/2014 according to the vin check and also it had a single recall which is fuel line pressure recall issued 2016 in korea) . It is now clocking 90000 km. No noises no rattling . Do you think it still has the n47 engine up to 2011. Or it has an n47 updated with new timing chain and tensioners after 2011 (according to PuMA recall) because i fear that yes it is a 2014 car but has a 2003-2009 engine. Really i didnt heard any timing chain problem after 2013. Hope you reassure me coz really i do love the car. As for oil change it has a service every 6-7000 km. Do you think its the cause of no chain noises. Thank very much
I forgot to mention tha it is an urban line with kit sport M. It has gear shifters under the steering wheels

Keep an ear out every once in a while when you cold start it. if you it sounds like light rattling , it's time to change it.
If you maintain your car regulary, change oil on every 8-10k km, dont push the pedal to the metal when engine is cold, dont turn off your engine right of after a long trip etc etc this engine can go up to 750.000 without any problem. BMW is like a woman, pay attention to it and it will never betray you :)
Im looking at a 520d 2011 model with 110000 miles on it. In good condition Automatic engine is nice and quite. Its at a small dealership here in Ireland. What would you check if you were me?
Most importantly check/listen to the engine at idle and while driving, make sure it don't have a rattling sound from the timing chain. Also of course check everything else like you would do on any other car.
Philip it’s a risk with any of these n47 models with the timing chain issues. If you get a decent warranty go for it.

Nope .. all have the same problem if they have the plastic guiders for the chain

@@sahlimohamedaziz1560 From my research BMW made some big changes after 2011 to reduce stress for the chain, but that has to do mainly with peak force & resonace from the crank and oil pump. On the B47/57 engine series they improved it even more, that's why they use essentially the same chain but have alot less problems.
Salut man, cumpar zilele astea un X1 model din 2010, Germania (prima inmatriculare in 2012, deci nu stiu exact din ce luna e din 2010). Masina are deja 133k km si a apartinut unui diplomat, deci toate cheltuielile au fost suportate de ambasada si a fost foarte bine intretinuta. Ai putea sa explici putin cum anume suna un motor de genul cu problema asta? Also, ai idee cum ar fi trecuta in cartea service a masinii reparatia / inlocuirea asta daca a fost deja facuta?
Pai nu prea am ce zic de sunet , doar in cazurile grave zornaie .. iar in fisele de service ca sa fii sigur cauta pr google translate cum se spune in germana distributie , si lant distributie si daca gasesti asa scris e clara treaba . Mult succes la noua achizitie
We have 2 n47s 1 has 186miles the other has 175 they never missed a beat i no 1 has had a chain replaced before we got it but i dont no about the other 1 anyway there not worth replacing the chains on em just drive them till they blow but there great cars all the same

So im looking for a bmw 320d - e92 coupe - model 2007-2010 (can’t afford a newer model) and all of them has the N47 engine , now the thing is i am not sure what is the best way to avoid this problem buying a car that already made 200k KM or a car that have made 150k KM ? Because u say in the video the problem happens befour 150K KM and a mechanic i talksd to once told me it happens after 150k KM .. what would u do in my place ?!

Honestly, the only way to sleep calm at night is to buy the car you want(afford) and after that immediately change it s timing chain . There is no one who can tell you what is the real status of the sprokets and chain . Be wise and stay safe ;)

Get a 2006 with an M series engine. They had a different camshaft design and the chains don’t go on them if they’ve been serviced properly.
I sell one from 2010, full leather big navi, sensors on the back. It has 261k, timming chain changed(with proof) and has 225hp

I have jusy bought a 2016 toyota auris 1.6 diesel car and they have the same engines. I only found out after i bought the car! I am really upset and messaged Toyota. Now they are saying that i have 7 year warrants on the timing chain which i should be 😊 about but i am worried of any accidents if the chain breaks at a high speed. Should i worry? Also, they are saying that should something go wrong my car's software is updated to let me know. But these problems come without warning, don't they?

Is that a typical behaviour of those N47's? tbh, that was kinda annoying and scary to me...

i’ve had 1 snap on a 320d lci and 1 tensor broke on a BMW X3 f25 and I’ve purchased a bmw 318d sport 13 reg and changed the engine in that car as well
It’s a disgrace that a bmw engine should break in this way
well ... not a disgrace if you think that total sold worldwide are over 13 milions.. and just think about the audi-;s A7 series transmission problem ... now there is something to be ashamed for ;)

Spre informarea ta, kit-ul de distributie are 3 lanturi nu doar 2 cum ti-au schimbat tie "bajeti" de la Team Service, parerea mea dupa ce am fost la ei ca sunt niste jepcari, nu recomand sa mergeti la ei.Sunati si intrebati cate lanturi schimba si daca uleiul si filtru este inclus o sa vedeti ca nu si daca le adauga va costa mai mult ca la reprezentanta.Nu vreau sa jignesc ma abtin, sa invete sa scoata senzori fara sa rupa suporti sau chesti esentiale, ma bucur ca am renuntat sa merg la ei a costat mai mult sa repar ce au stricat . In fine schimbati distributia daca nu aveti un istoric BMW pe bune nu asteptati sa se auda, o sa cedeze.

My friend have flywheel issue od e90 320d, and he have same gear leaver shake. So i assumed its the same issue.
Pres the clutch pedal 1/4 of the way and you will fill if the flywheel is unbalanced,that can cause the lever shaking
Hello UrbanDriver. I have an n43b16a and my gear is shaking same. Very annoying. What and where is fork rubber? Sorry english is not my first. The engine is shaking same too with all parts of the car. Please help me any dealer couldnt help me.
Just to add to thread..I have a used bmw 320d 2011 n47d20c with replaced manual transmission and the shift stick is also vibrating. If i push the gas to raise the rpm to between 800-1000rpm it goes away. (urban do u know if its same problem?) I know that the slave cylinder also had to be replaced after the transmission replacement (a second time they had to dismount the tranny) before my ownership. anyway; The slave cylinder connects to aid the fork that connects to lever when shifting. requires tranny dismount to fix if u need.,. but mine has been like that long and just think the idle is set to low. no big problem

I watched the video twice and you didn`t mention the engine codes that are affected by timing chain problem.
I did not because I don't have all the official reports on hand. The best way to find out is to call your dealer give him your VIN number and then you'll find out if the car was included in the recall , like I said in the video & thx for wathching :)

my service gave me 100k km warranty and so I just don't care about that ...now I am over 20.000 km and all good. I think that when I am going to approach that treshold I will change it again . So yeah , hope it helps !
Yeah it has big time i have just had mine changed after and engine rebuild N47 4 cylinder the timing jumped, the cost was astronomical £4,800 it was the tensioners although i did not know that as i had bought the 320D M Sport Coupe a month before it just died although it was making a noise like a ticking after it was warm - and audit-able in the cabin. Salut! :) Eu am un X3 2008 cu acest motor 2.0 177CP N47 (Cutie Automata) . Am dus masina la service ptr schimbat distributia. Au descoperit ca trebuie schimbata si admisia ptr ca era infundata si imbacsita. Niste parti din clapetele de la admisie erau rupte si cazuse in motor , au zis ca am ajuns la limita si ca mai aveam putin si ramaneam fara motor dar am scapat. La cati KM recomanzi schimbarea uleiului la acest motor si ce marca de ulei sa folosesc? Cati km pot sa merg estimativ cu noua distributie ? 100 k sau mai putin/mult ?

Am văzut clipul. Informațiile sunt ok 👌. Cineva îmi recomanda un ulei de motor Wurth Thriatlon Endurance. Zice cum că ar fi ulei original BMW utilizat la noile modele (primul ulei care se pune în fabrică). Eu folosesc 5w-30 la masina. Alții zic cum că și uleiul de la Ravenol ar fi bun.
Dacă ai cumva idee cat timp /câți km ar trebui sa merg cu noua distribuție?
mie garantia mi-au dat-o la 100k deci ...stai relax man :)

Well you can theoretically but in real life is a subjective hearing test ..
mine failed no warning just lucky it was on start up not as i driving but still will cost me way too much to fix

So the mechanic shop gives you 100k warranty but I think that using the new and improved kitt you will not have any problems

I have a 2011 320d 184hp and i think i can hear the timing chain rattle 124k km on now
Fix it before it brakes, or it will be much more expensive to fix because of damage on other parts.
You cannot hear it , or if you hear it you don t have the knowledge if it is gonna brake or not :(

you don t have to tell him nothing , every kit that comes after 2012 is revised and it s ok ..they did the work and made it safe to replace the old one ..so ..stay calm and change the timing chain :)

you dont have to do it yourself , the new ones are from metal with teflon guides and I guess they are better in the long term

scrii aici si discutam tot ce vrei iar in masura in care pot , ajut cu mare placere :)
Pai bazele ca sa zic asa le aici pe canal , trebuie sa uiti si sa asculti cu atentie ca sunt max 4 filmulete despre ce trebuie sa verifici si cel mai important dupa mine este sa o duci la o verificare full in service .. adica atat diagnoza cat si inspectie tehnica .. cred ca sunt foarte multe de verificat dar ai pe canal aici principalele lucruri, iar legat de distributie nu o poti verifica doar sa te pregatesti si sa o schimbi din timp cum am explicat in clip in restiti doresc sa iti gasesti masina mult dorita si sa te bucuri de ea , iar cel mai important drive safe !!
So Is it best to avoid 2009 320d? My budget can only get me a 2009 320d with miles around 75000 miles. I am student as well so I do not have money to pour into the car

@@DrMeize it’s a 2011. It’s value was like 7400-8000 That job is like 3000-5000 in the USA. Plus more parts around the engine possible needing to be changed just wasn’t worth paying that price. If it was still under warranty I would’ve fixed it fersure. BMW stands for Break My Wallet

the bearing shells are a common problem of the v10 e;ngine in e60 M but not in our cars... Go buy your dream car ;) stop worrying about small problems :)

No, 325d has n57 engine and this engine do not have the timing chain problem.

You are right up to some point,but I believe you are not mechanic or whit no much experience on this kind of engines.The main problem is not the sliders,is the tensioner,which need oil presure and internal coil spring.If the chain is not rather the solucion is change the tensioner only.But if already the sliders an the rest of the timing chain is dammage,changing the tensioner you only, you will extend his life a little before he breaks.
Please go and discuss the problem with a bmw dealer specialist and then come and share what you have learned. The first thought was that it was the tensioner but then the sliders where discovered to be the problem. The original bmw recall kitt has not only the tensioner inside to be replaced it has all of the things I ve explained in the video ;)
Urbandriver as you may know the dealer try to avoid responsibility they try to minimise they expenses in recalls and as all ways blame different parts of the engine.I am talking because I have work in this type of engine's,I repair a lot of them.I may know is no the only brand with this problem and not the only type of engine.
Yes on his matter you are right . There are a lot more engines from different brands with almost the same problem but not that discussed and high number of cars sold. For example the mert benz v6 twin from 2006 in cls I think not exactly sure though... but in the end the point of the video is to reasure other bmw owners to do the job and not panic cause it will be ok !

This is such a well known problem; why would you go near one of those engines? There are loads of alternatives. Not worth the hassle.

It isnt the engine, its the timing chain kit. 2 different things. BMW diesel engines are amongst if not the best and cleanest diesels available in the automotive industry. Why do you think toyota bought their engines

I dont hate it but here in uk if u want to change the timing chain . U r looking 65£ an hour labour minimum...
So u calculate how much it will cost to pay for changing the chain...

U speak shit ....not the truth...I just "saved" my 330d N57 ...that is similar with N47 ..320d .Few numbers ??!?! LOADS of numbers mate ....and is not a small percentage .This engine has pulled back BMW a lot .Still a fan and proud to get my E46 330d project finished but is an M57 engine .
Speaking about N47 /N57 the trough is that the DFP will be a major cause on those stretching chain issues ...when oil is contaminated with fuel .I was trying to document this aspect and that's how I found your video ...that tells us ..nothing ..by the way . :) .
Everyone one knows tha N47 is the worst engine from BMW ...

what I say is about my experience with my own car ... if you don't like it s not a problem for me , but keep in mind that there are millions of cars with this engine instaled , and only a few (hundred) have problems ... just say'n...
