  • Are you a staff member or a dream maker? A CEO or a Guardian of the Culture? As employees increasingly seek purpose over pecking order, what if everyone had a job title that motivated and inspired them to become the most creative version of themselves?
    Originally a journalist before moving into PR and marketing, Carissa has worked for some of the world’s top luxury brands, and is personally motivated by creativity, purpose and ethical business. She holds a Masters of Marketing degree, as well as two undergraduate degrees in Politics and Journalism from Australian universities. She is now studying law part-time. Carissa lives in Hua Hin with her husband and daughter, and has previously lived and worked in Australia, Ireland, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Thailand. She has a German Shephard and English Cocker spaniel, as well as a feral cat. She is an aspiring kite surfer, yogi and vegan chef. Carissa is currently Guardian of the Brand (Chief Commercial Officer) of a world-renowned brand of luxury resorts, where she oversees sales, marketing and reservations teams globally. Words do matter. Management often devalues employees with a “lower” title. The ones “at the bottom” (cashiers, stockers, floor staff, greeters, etc) are looked down on/devalued by management. They demand loyalty and excellence from titles at the bottom, while treating them with disrespect and unrealistic rules. If a greeter assumes the title of “First Point Ambassador “, it’s not going to make them feel any better if management continues to see them and treat them as bottom levelers. It’s a nice idea, but if the title is going to change more favorably, treatment of the employee must change, too.

    This was a great talk! Thank you!
    Challenge:
    GIVE ME A BETTER JOB TITLE !
    So many people think that I am "just a housekeeper" but my job has so much more to it than that. Sure, I keep the house, but I'm also the chef, the sitter, the person who takes care of everyone's needs, the seamstress, the laundry lady. I also rescue people, give great advice on placement of furniture, choice of finishes, design and efficiency. I take care of everything as though it belonged to me. Most housekeepers clean quickly and then leave. I am methodical, detail oriented, organized and I'm here to serve. Very few people could do all that I do. My boss isn't here right now but I am directing deliveries, the gardener and the programmer for the house electronics. I probably know more about this house than they do!
    Give me a better job title!
    Just try....

    This message is for someone who needs to hear this and will fully understand it... You are not define by your circumstance or your past. It’s not what happened to you that determines your success in life; it is how you deal with those circumstances that determines your success in life. You are strong, you are capable and practice forgiveness (Forgiveness is for you; forgive your parents or anyone whom we have chosen to hurt us, to begin the process of healing and freedom. Remember: Forgiveness is for you to be freed, healed and happy. It’s a RESET BUTTON) and practice gratitude everyday. This will change the course of your life forever. Love you always and I believe in you wholeheartedly no matter what ✨❤️ - Nat

    If my boss would change my job title from Senior Developer to the Creator of Opportunities, the next thing that would happen would be... me changing my workplace to a new one where I would be a Senior Developer again, period.

      @@andreybugaenko9677 I didn't study and work hard to be called "Creator of Opportunities" at work. Ask any developer, data analyst, engineer, etc. how many of us would not be offended by those "new" position names. Ask any IT recruiter how they feel about most "magician/genius" statuses on Linkedin. When do they look for a professional leader that will be taken seriously by a ruthless and very strong team - who will they pick? Lead Fortune Teller or a Lead Data Analyst? Yes, for some companies and teams that new mindset may work. But not for all. In many, it would be like a demotion.

    I acually see no point in titles, I myself am CEO in my own company, 10 employees, and I am Director od R&D in a large company, I do not have a business card, and I do not have a title in my email. Younger generations of company owners do not care about titles, we care about knowlage and work etics. All you need is Jira or Upclick, not titles.

    • @andreybugaenko9677
      @andreybugaenko9677 Před 2 lety

      You need titles to make navigation easier when you are looking for specific role. Ideally, you have organization structure that updated and have notes. But in reality you usually have only titles to understand who you need.
      Secondly, it is still easier to find new people if they use same titles for same roles. Guardian of Brand - you never will appear on searches, when people look Commercial Chief.

    Job titles are handed out to people straight out of university, in lieu of substantial payment. So you have the 22 year old "Director" with not a single person reporting to them. Or you could just deem yourself the CEO of your own company, and hope nobody asks how many employees you have. It's all meaningless. A company could hire you as burger flipper and you could put CFO on your resume. If you have executive presence when people meet you, then it is believable and thus it is real.

    The core want of every living being is "power".
    Power in the form of "authority" in working life are associated with job titles - a office assistant has negligible authority compared to Vice President - This sums all explanation !

    So sorry, but not at all convincing talk. You seem like one more excited, breathless and possibly motivated speaker, but changing job titles will not affect employees or workers in a positive way if the senior staff and administrators do not show dedication and sincerity through their ACTIONS… on a daily basis. And that would not have made for a very engaging TEDTalk, would it?

    • @jhonbus
      @jhonbus Před 2 lety +2

      I don't think the idea is really "Just change people's job title" - It's more of a suggestion to consider whether the job titles give a true sense of the deeper purpose of the role, while *also* practising other good business- and people-management principles. You can't expect every TED talk to mention "Oh also pay people fairly and lead by example and be a compassionate employer and and and..." when its focus is on one particular idea.

    Guardian of the Brand - give me less information about this position about than Chief Commercial Officer. So you achieved the opposed effect you stated as your goal. Double demotion for the company, because such title uses Chief Officer, that should be good about outbound communication.
