After the end of the last ministerial meeting under the Czech leadership, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, announced this. Czech Deputy Prime Minister Marian Jurečka handed over the presidential agenda for the next six months to Sweden at a meeting of environment ministers.
In Brussels, Jurečka marked the end of half a year, during which the Czech Republic completed negotiations on a number of proposals from the package of standards known as Fit for 55. This should lead the Union to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 55 percent compared to 1990 values by the end of the decade The representatives of the Czech Presidency and the MEPs agreed, among other things, on a fundamental restriction on the sale of new cars with classic combustion engines from 2035, a reform of the emission allowance market or a binding target for the absorption of carbon dioxide in the management of land and forests.
“I have rarely seen a presidency that was more successful, more purposeful and more professional,” said Timmermans, who, according to him, has been following or participating in the events of the EU institutions and its predecessor communities for almost 35 years. According to him, the Czechia was able to fulfill the words of its former president Václav Havel, according to which the division of Europe into East and West should not be a moral or political characteristic, but only a geographical one.
The long-time Dutch European Commissioner, who harshly criticized the Czechia in the middle of the last decade in the dispute over migration quotas, particularly appreciated the fact that Czech negotiators reached an agreement on the emissions reform last weekend. Among other things, it limits the amount of emission allowances, charges for emissions from road transport and heating of buildings, and introduces a social climate fund to limit the impact of this reform. Its agreed form was welcomed by the governments of the EU countries, but the industrial lobby on one side and environmentalists on the other had reservations.
“We have to be able to solve these things, because nature will not wait, climate change will not wait,” explained Jureček’s active Czech approach to climate-friendly policy. “The agreement remembers that there are financial resources for the transformation. So that industry, the public sector and households can handle it,” added the Czech Deputy Prime Minister, who is temporarily managing the Ministry of the Environment.

Many thanks to Mr. Timmermans for appreciating our role.. We, the Czechs, situated in the heart of Europe, are masters of dealing and reaching consensus between the West and the East, and I think we have proven that....

Dear Mr Timmermans. Don't act like the whole of Europe is behind what you say, because we are not. Don't speak on my behalf. Ever!
