- We went to Perry's Landing (Lake Superior State Forest Campground) near Grand Marais, Michigan for an early spring rock hunt. We found something unexpected as we often do on Lake Superior.

- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

- THE ROCK SHED -
I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

You guys found some amazing rocks this time! I’m really enjoying when you say “I’ll take that home and slab it”, and then you do a cut away scene showing the slabs at home. Or showing a cut scene of an agate at home in better light. That’s super cool!
Funny I said the samething right before he did cool GODSPEED
I enjoy the “cut away” instead of waiting months to see a gorgeous rock slabbed.
I'll do my best to keep doing stuff like that. I can't do it every time, but I can most of the time.
I like the cut away cuts as well ❤
a little sad I didn't find htis channel while my old dog was still alive
she loved rocks, stones, pebbles. clinker, anything
mind, she'd have had the whole TV in her mouth watching this video
what a great episode
Was your dog's name Clifford?
That's a big bite!
@@wbsc56 She sure was a big ol' lump. Like one of those fridge freezer shaped pork pies, beautiful, golden brown like a sunset but twice as big and good lookin.
Her smiles and frowns only a little smaller than her heart. She lives on in mine now and I'll tell you, it's a squeeze *_:' )_*
Thanks
Several cool finds. I love that you hide some for others to find. That is so cool.
I haven't had anyone find the last two I hid yet. At least no on that has notified me.
Absolutely incredible amethyst find! Congrats! Definitely a top shelf find.
Awesome find Sam! The Amethyst rock is amazing. Great rock hunt guys and gal. The first black rock you found Rob is interesting.
I liked that first one a lot. I sure hope it tumbles well.
I wouldn't know one rock from another, but I'd keep most of the rocks you threw back.😊
Awesome video dear friend, have a happy day!
Thanks!
My late dad retired to Tucson, and of course desert rocks, or rocks from that part of the country have a fascinating story to tell as well. Cool!!!
That amethyst looks like a set of teeth smiling! 💜
That's what we thought. Maybe after eating a grape candy.
It does!
Rockin Rob-in
Oh, my word! So many beautiful rocks in their natural state. I kept yelling in my head "Put it in the tumbler!!" :)
im in Ely, mn. obviously in camping country, but we love nothing more than coming your way to camp and rock hunt.
nice amethyst find!
It's more fun to camp away from home and see something different.
I like the green stones too, especially epidote and unakite. I live outside of Phoenix, where not too far from here, I found lots of epidote. I also found some unakite (epidote and feldspar, with quartz). I really need to make a trip to the Great Lakes. The rocks are amazing!
And I need to take a trip to Arizona. I've never been there and would like to see it someday.
First rock; Nat says "Great explanation, Sam!"
I thought so too. That was a really fun find.
That amethyst was super cool! You all found some really impressive agates. 🥰😇😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Such a find! So many neat elements! Can not wait to get back to the big Superior
That’s some great finds big ones for sure. Sam is becoming a great rockhound.❤❤
He has been a great rockhound for awhile now. He was a natural right from the start.
I'm addicted to these videos... currently watching these before bedtime... the waves are so calming and the stones are beautiful ! Happy to learn from you
Sweet dreams.
Rock on Friends. Thanks Rob.😊
It’s so fun to watch you all having fun on the beach! Can’t wait to make a trip up that way ❤
Wow! That water sure is clear too!
As Michigan baby, don't you tell anybody or we'll come and get you. We're not sharing. I don't care what the news is
Great finds guys (and gal)!! I love Lake Superior. My main problem is WAAYYY too many pretty rocks!
No problem, you just have to learn to be very selective.
I have to admit that I miss Lake Michigan and all the pretty rocks… I moved to Colorado because I love the mountains but every once in a while I miss my big lake.😢
Nancy and I visited Colorado a couple years ago and I was surprised at how much I missed the water, and we were only there for a couple weeks.
Wow! This second hunt of the day had some great finds! That one striped rock that Sam found looked suspiciously like petrified wood. You should take some of the porphyry home and slab it. Agate Dad does it and they can be really beautiful.
I don't love porphyry as much as Taylor does. I found a couple today and left them behind. I suppose I could bring one home and slice it for you though. Maybe next time.
@@MichiganRocks well, I wouldn't mind lol. I like the crystal formations in them. No matter what you decide I'm still a huge fan of you and your channel!
I want them all! Nice hunt. Great friends.
Love Grand Marais ❤
Sam, got an incredible find while you all were rock-hounding on the beach. I would love to see that thing tumbled and polished! Great job!!
That Agate Burger Sam found looks delicious!! 🤤
It's a bit overdone. Too crunchy.
@@MichiganRocks Nah, it’s just Cajun Agate 🔥
LOVE green rocks... Love ALL rocks... How beautiful guys... Thanks so much!
You are rich in rock diversity there!
Nice!
Yes we are.
Its those young eyes of Sam's why he's finding them! 😂 It sucks getting old! 😅 That magnetite is gorgeous! Beautiful finds! 😊
I'm torn between wearing my cheaters and leaving them off. I usually leave them off, but I'm constantly putting them on to look at the rocks that I pick up. It does suck getting old.
@Michigan Rocks I wear my glasses with bifocals only when I go rock hounding. Its the only time I wear them...but i don't want to miss any cool rocks! 😎 😊
Great specimens and even better with company. Nice to watch.
This is wonderful! Thank you for sharing!
Sam's young strong eyes win the day! 😊
Yep, he's good at spotting agates. I think I would have seen that HUGE amethyst if I had walked by it. That would be hard to miss.
It looked like an amethyst burger. Very cool.
Another great video you Rock.
Thank-You for the early season explore !! ❤
Looks like a pretty great haul this trip, it's always fun when you have others along as well. Thanks for taking us along for the ride :)
I like having company too.
You know Life is Good , when you appreciate ROCKS ! Nice Stuff ! I have a friend that went to Gitcha Gumee to hunt rocks with his U.V./ Black light , a week or so ago ., like freckles in the rocks under the light , they look after dark
Those are fun to hunt.
Wow! You guys found a lot of really good stuff out there! All those cold water agates and your red skinned one, and that magnetic one was really cool. Not only was it magnetic and a neat looking rock, vut the magnesite was all in triangle formations. Why is that? And you even found a yooperlite, in broad daylight! Thats awesome! And you were a magnet for epidote today! And they were some really pretty green rocks too! And that is the first time ive seen porphyry in squares before too! Ive seen the crystals form rectangles but not squares! Thank you for the wonderful hunt and the find of the day had to be Sam's amethyst agate! What a beauty! Thanks Rob!
The agates in this area are Lake Superior agates, not cold water agates.
I"m not sure why the magnetite forms those geometric shapes. Sometimes it's just mixed together with whatever the red rock is, with no triangles.
I love watching you and the ability to see the beautiful clear water as you carefully select your rocks.
Do you ever sell any rocks? Would you be willing to pick me out some and mail them to me if I pay you? Don't think I'll ever get to Michigan any time soon.
I love your videos..Love the sound of the water and the amazing views and of course rocks. Could you show a video on how spheres are made.
I could not show that since I have never made one. It would be fun to do that though.
Very fun video. My dad grew up in traverse city. I used to collect rocks from the d day beach by the sleeping bear dunes. This was in the 70's. I would drag them in my beach towel to the car. Then to the cottage. In traverse city. Back home to Pgh, pa. My husband and I took our daughters in 2000. Then we went back 2019. Empty nesters. So different going on vacation without the kids. Thank you so much for sharing. Lots of great memories. 💙💙🩷🫶🫶🫶🪣🪣🪣
We are empty nesters too. We adapted pretty quickly, but it sure is different.
Amethyst Burger is possibly my favourite find across all of these videos (although there are so many lovely rocks, it's hard to choose!)
It's delicious looking for sure! I couldn't believe when he found that.
I wondered how often rock hunters steal each others prizes. 😜 When I was a young boy I once found an almost clear quartz crystal while on a picnic with my cousins in the Sierra Nevadas. I was very proud of it. When we got ready to go home my crystal was gone. I'm glad that didn't make any accusations but I've always wondered how it disappeared and where it ended up. Thanks for the video Rob!
It wasn't winter was it? I have found some very nice, clear quartz only to find a puddle of water later where I set it in the house.
@@MichiganRocks 😂It was early summer and at a fairly low (warmer) altitude but that was an excellent question.
Impressive finding a yooperlite during the day! Massive skills!
I'm about 50% on identifying them in the daylight. I found another one a couple days ago, but it only had one little speck of sodalite in it.
This was amazing!
How do you know the lakes in Michigan are friendly?
They wave
Ha! Good one.
Thank you for sharing this ❤
0: 52. I Finally cought on. It's a double meaning!
Michigan Rocks.
Yes it does. It's the best state of all in the summertime. Thanks for the videos and
the title/title
For me, Michigan Rocks is almost a triple meaning. I do videos showing rocks from Michigan, the state itself is beautiful, and I also graduated from the University of Michigan.
Very cool finds! Great editing as well, from the find to the work shop to slabs. Cheers from Wisconsin.
Thanks!
Fun day, great rocks too
Nice trip lots of cool finds thanks for sharing 😊
Wonderful hunt and fun to see a part 2 hunt in the same day! Can you believe that feet of snow fell there only last week? Goodness. I can’t wait to hunt for petoskeys in June when my school year is over. My family and I travel to the Atlanta area. Keep posting your trips.
I don't think they got that snow in the area we were in in this video. I'm not 100% sure though. I know they got 29 inches in Marquette. I got a firsthand report from my sister who lives there.
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Pretty amethyst and a variety of interesting rocks... looks like y'all are having so much fun!!
That was a very fun day.
Just curious. Have you ever tripped & fallen face first into the water this early in your rock hunts? You know that water is ICY COLD... there's probably ice bergs floating somewhere.
I have never fallen face first into the water on _any_ of my rock hunts.
Awesome indeed!!!
Fun stuff. Fun. Thanks.
I'm jelly... congratulations y'all 🎉 great video
Great find superior lake
An awesome cut!
SE Michigan…here
❤️ love yr video-shares
“I know that water is COLD”
11:29
It's very cold. That was a warm day so at least our hands warmed up when they came out. I wouldn't want to wade in it though.
Love rock hunting in the water. Another place is the Yakima river south of Ellensburg in the state of Washington.
That's a bit of a drive for me.
That was amazing 👏 😀
Yes, I liked that Magnetite, cool. 👍
Love that brilliant white quartzite!
And love the really red jasper mossy types.
You are correct it is a basalt and it's in Abundance in maine, it won't tumble well but it do polish by hand quite well
Awsome finds
Nice picking, amethyst is beautiful.
I love all those rocks.
The Amethyst rock looked like a big smile!
Sam's face sure had a big smile.
Love the video, Rob! Sam's amethyst is cool, but I liked your slabbed hematite more... that thing is awesome!!
Really? I guess I liked Sam's because it was so unusual for that area. We've found it before, but never that big and awesome.
❤❤❤ Love that Beach.....
Very nice stones
Hi Rob 👋 hope you find alot of gorgeous AGATES Bro Good Luck 👍😃
Yep! The magnatite did look cool slabbed!
No place like Lake Superior! Instead of sand you get awesome rocks!!
Sand is overrated.
all those cool looking rocks, been hinking about going there 👋
Wow, I really like that first stone. It is really cool! Wish I up there to get that yooperlite also. Thanks for sharing.
That first one was my second favorite after Sam's amethyst.
Looks like you early birds had a great time 👍
I had no idea there was natural amethyst in Lake Superior! That is a beautiful piece. It almost looks like a big, huge smile! A gorgeous paperweight! Love it! Used to rock hunt too🙂but bad OA hips won't let me now:(
I'm sorry you can't get out anymore. Hopefully I can fill a little of that void for you.
@@MichiganRocks You are 🤗 thank you for the wonderful videos! Happy hunting, I'll be watching!
That looked like a fun day.
It was!
I wish you good luck and lasting success🌹🌹🌹
Love the square polka-dot rock
Me too. I hope it polishes well.
That looks great cut 👍👍
I'll bet it would, but Sam is keeping it whole.
Another great video & rock find! Nice to see the next generation getting enjoyment out of it as well. Man I miss my home state! Probably one of the reasons why I watch your channel. 😉
I hear that a lot. People move away and then miss the big lakes.
@@MichiganRocks and the trees & fireflies! Don't miss the winters & mosquitoes in the summer. Lol
@@dreamlookautodetailingauto3353 Are fireflies unique to Michigan?
@@MichiganRocks I've only lived in the thumb area of Michigan, and went camping around Tawas area several times where fireflies were around. Other Eastern states I'm sure have them. They say fireflies have been seen in the Rocky Mountain States here & there, but I have lived here for 35 yrs & never seen one?
@@dreamlookautodetailingauto3353 I thought they were everywhere. They're definitely here.
Cool rocks
Awesome 😊
That amethyst is sweet
I agree Green is a great color especially with White . Three years ago I watched your video and have seen every one since. Now I have a number of tumblers, flat lap, lap saw and cab machine. My wife hates you although I started making jewelry which has had a positive effect. You helped make retirement more of an adventure with all of this.
Ha ha! I can understand why she hates me. Start making her some nice stuff and she might come around.
WOW! looks like amethist in this one what an absolute beauty!
It is amethyst.
That was the best rock beach in a while. Lots of good ones. It looked like a great day. Sam has an amazing agate eye.the amethyst was gorgeous, That’s my birth stone. I love the yooperlites too.
Did you see last week's video? That was from earlier in the day. I thought we did pretty well there too.
@@MichiganRocks Yep. I never miss a video. Sometimes I forget and am a few days late, but I watch them all. That was a busy day.
WOW! That's the same beach we tried to hunt back in late September that was just brutal. The water is like glass now! I'm gonna have to bring a dry suit and a snorkel next time I'm up!
And that amethyst... HOLY COW!
Rough day when you were there? I've had more calm days in that area than rough, although there have been plenty of rough days too.
@@MichiganRocks Yeah, that was the day we caught a storm front from the north, temp dropped into the 20's, wind was 45 mph, waves were like 90 feet high and angry... LOL!
Love you brother ❤️🙏
Quality Video
I love collecting rocks, minerals, fossils, and whatever else catches my eye. Over the years I've accumulated quite a hoard, and many of them I've polished with a vibratory tumbler. Some day, I'm gonna bring a pocket full of polished agates, and randomly scatter them along the shore of Lake Superior. Imagine the shock from whoever finds them, and will proclaim that Superior polished them! 🤣🤣🤣
Just pray that there's not a big storm before they're discovered!
NIce rocks today!
Coool!
I would die for the at Yuperlite 😂❤ the amethyst was awesome too! I need to go rock hounding but near me it’s usually just fossil rock (most of it empty or so crowded that you can’t make anything out/prepare it properly). Hopefully I can find somewhere
We have a lot of fossils near me too.
I really like the first stone u found💕
Me too!
