Chastising her for not standing up seems like a pure power move to put her in her place. But that is not it. direction. Spending on social programs was a target of the administration and the GOP wanted cuts. Social Security was the biggest target for cuts along with welfare programs.
Apparently O'Neill pulled the Irish card while sharing a couple glasses of whiskey with the President and alluded to all the Irish grandparents that came to America and needed Social Security to put food on the table. When you see God under attack, it emboldens you... seeing others attacking God and His Word provides you false-confidence that He is not who He says He is... seeing others who are not ashamed of their sin encourages you to not feel ashamed of yours! You are greatly deceived and mistaken. God is not dependent upon you or anyone for anything. God is the same, yesterday today and forever! Your worldly tv shows do not affect God's being. No. God is God independent of whatever lies and slander Martin Sheen and other sinners say... There is nothing secret from the Lord. He knows every wicked thing that you have ever done in secret. He knows those things that if they were exposed to your friends and family and coworkers, you would be overflowing with deep shame and guilt... or at least embarrassment! You are warned! On that day, all will be revealed... all your secrets will be exposed for all to see... and if on that day, you are still filled with pride, God will banish you to experience torment and anguish and suffering in hell and the Lake of Fire for all eternity. A billion years is but a second compared to eternity! Facing your eternity, you will wish you had never been born. But you do not need to spend eternity with Satan and the wicked.... Jesus is gracious! He is willing to forgive you all your sins... but He will not forgive sin that is not first forsaken. Fear God, repent and live!

You never really read the NT.. He wasn't so kind or loving. He demanded exclusivity that he did not allow one disciple to properly bury his father (which is mandated in the same Torah this jesus was said to fulfill) , he talked down to his mother ('woman, what do I have to do with YOU), he refused to help a desperate mother twice (and his disciples three times) and essentially called her a dog. He reduced his disciples to stealing and eating raw grain on the Shabbat because he refused to make any preparation for them-- yet claimed he was righteous and observant..then deflected the concerns into a libel-fest wherein he couldn't even get the facts of the bible right. He demanded that anyone who objected to him be brought before him and killed. He instituted the sin of thought crimes (wherein if you think it it's as good as doing it, which is totally asinine!! ACTIONS are what count). He lied about the Torah and lied about the Jews-- in fact, opened the floodgates of anti-Semitism, hatred and and violence against Jews. He purposely dissed his own family and his own mother. He was a vile, spiteful, arrogant and evil person.. only second to Paul who was even worse. Of course, we have NOTHING of jesus.. he never wrote anything. But there wasn't a crime in humanity that wasn't absolved by Holy Writ.

      "what exactly do you believe?"
Well, from context I assume you mean in regards to the existence of god(s).
I do not believe in god(s).
      "I know God is real"
No, you do not. You _believe_ God (I assume you mean Yahweh - the Christian god, out of the thousands that has been said to exist throughout human history) is real.
There is quite a big difference between knowing something and believing something.
Beliefs are dime-a-dozen. Knowledge is a sub-set of belief, often described as justified true belief (and by true, I mean in accordance with reality).
"I know the bible is true"
No, you do not. See above.
      "I suggest you believe"
Thank you. I'll take your suggestion under consideration.

      "I know it's true"
No, you do not. You _believe_ it is true, and I accept and acknowledge that it is a sincere and heartfelt belief.
You really should learn the difference between knowing and believing, and how beliefs doesn't "become knowledge" just because you believe a whole lot.
As an aside, you really shouldn't present "arguments", that you yourself don't find convincing.
I am confident in guessing, that you don't find a similar "argument" persuasive, if a member of another religion says; "I know the Bhagavad Gita is true", for example.
      "hell is real"
Yes, that belief is indeed part of most Christian orthodoxy. It doesn't tell you if it is actually real or not.
      "Most people go to hell"
Yet another fundamental part of Christian orthodoxy - with the exact same issues.
      "Jesus died for sins"
      Same issue as above.
Having entertained your little distraction, I'll bring us back to the original point; that of you supporting the bloodthirsty Bronze Age barbarism presented in the Bible.
You see, it doesn't matter if it is real or not.
Whether it is fiction or fact - it is still heinous inhuman practices, that civilised modern society has roundly rejected.
The very fundamental pillars of Christianity are rejected as profound nonsense.

"Whoever believes in Him will not PERISH, but have eternal LIFE."
Either you cease to exist or you live forever in peace and joy. There is no option for being tortured forever.

This scene is such a powerful argument for why we shouldn't let ourselves be ruled by prejudice, fear, hate, exclusion, or the "accounting book" approach of whether you are good enough or not. So often, it's used against women's rights, or against kids and teens having some freedom at home or in public, against LGBT folks, or a number of other things, sometimes even still for racial or religious prejudices. -- I grew up in a conservative religious family with way more restrictions, sheltering, and controlling than I knew about, until I was finally out on my own and began to see how other people lived. And yet I think my family and church life were pretty ordinary, not too unusual. I knew friends and relatives who came from far more strict and difficult homes, more like the lady zealot there. And one of those friends died at 38, with no mention of anyone significant in his life.If he was gay, his parents, and possibly he himself, would never have accepted him. I hadn't seen him since high school and one time running into him at the grocery store at college age. When I finally was truly out on my own, I began to see just how different my family / home life had been from most people's, and I began to see too how my parents had, with the best of intentions and thinking they were right, had restricted and controlled my life and relationships from my earliest memories until even at college age, especially when I tried to rebel any. It still affects me. I wish they could have known what they were doing and why it wasn't right. I wish I knew what happened to that friend. So this scene really gets to me. The thing is, my parents and I loved each other. They didn't mean to mishandle things and I don't think they even knew what they were doing was causing problems. I still love them and I miss them. (They passed away from health problems when I was in my early 30's. I was not prepared for it.) I know I missed out on a lot and I wish we could have talked and done better. I love that Pres. Bartlett lets go of some righteous anger and rebukes he woman's narrow-minded claims. She's part of that kind of religious group who let fear and hate and prejudice rule them, instead of acceptance and love. Their world is so small and self-limiting that they don't really live. I would much rather see people like Pres. Bartlett than the Dr. Jacobs character there.

  • @Lionaljohn

Columnists, pundits or journalists often dismiss Christians as inconsistent because “they pick and choose which of the rules in the Bible to obey.” The argument proceeds along these lines: “Christians ignore lots of Old Testament texts - about not eating raw meat or pork or shellfish, not executing people for breaking the Sabbath, not wearing garments woven with two kinds of material, and so on. Aren’t they just picking and choosing what they want to believe from the Bible?”
The root of the issue is a perceived inconsistency regarding rules mentioned in the Old Testament that are no longer practiced in the New Testament by the people of God. Most Christians don’t know how to respond when confronted about this, but the best place to start is often by describing the relationship between the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The Old Testament devotes a good amount of space to describing the various sacrifices that were to be offered in the tabernacle (and later the temple) to atone for sin so that worshipers could approach a holy God. That sacrificial system included a complex set of rules for ceremonial purity and cleanness - you could only approach God in worship if you ate certain foods, wore certain forms of clothing, refrained from touching certain objects, and so on. This code vividly conveyed, over and over, that human beings are spiritually unclean and cannot enter God’s presence without purification.
But even in the Old Testament, many passages indicate that the sacrifices and regulations of temple worship point ahead to something beyond them. This “something” was Jesus. Throughout his ministry, Jesus ignored Old Testament regulations regarding purification; he touched lepers and dead bodies, and declared all foods “clean.”
The culmination of Jesus’ ministry made clear his reason for doing this. When he died on the cross, the curtain in the temple tore in two, demonstrating that the entire sacrificial system and its ceremonial laws had been done away with. It is Jesus, the ultimate sacrifice for sin, not the laws of the Old Testament, that makes us clean now.
    Understanding Biblical Inconsistencies
The book of Hebrews explains that the Old Testament ceremonial laws were not so much abolished as fulfilled by Christ. Whenever we pray in Jesus’ name, we “have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus” (Hebrews 10:19). As a result, if Christians continued to practice the ceremonial laws, their actions would be deeply inconsistent with the teaching of the Bible as a whole.
The New Testament provides further guidance for reading and understanding the Old Testament. Paul makes clear that the apostles understood the Old Testament moral law to still be binding on us. In short, the coming of Christ changed how we worship, but not how we live. The moral law outlines God’s own character - his integrity, love and faithfulness. Old Testament commandments about loving our neighbor, caring for the poor, being generous with our possessions and being committed to family still apply. The New Testament continues to forbid killing and adultery, and the sexual ethic of the Old Testament is restated throughout the New Testament. If the New Testament reaffirms an Old Testament commandment, then it continues to have force for us today.
Once you grant the main premise of the Bible - the surpassing significance of Christ and his salvation - then all of the Bible’s various parts make sense. Because of Christ, the ceremonial law of the Old Testament is repealed. However, if you reject the idea that Jesus is God’s Son and our Savior, then the Bible may contain some insight and wisdom - but most of it would be rejected as foolish or erroneous.
    Where Does this Leave Us?
There are only two possibilities: If Christ is God, then this way of reading the Bible makes sense and is perfectly consistent with its main premise. If Christ isn’t God, then one does not adopt the central proclamation of Christianity, nor can the Bible serve as a guide for much of anything. But the one thing that cannot be said is that Christians are inconsistent to accept the moral statements of the Old Testament while not practicing its ceremonial laws.
TLDR: Jesus died on the cross and fulfilled the old Testament laws. We don't follow them because that is not how we worship anymore. It is Jesus, the ultimate sacrifice for sin, not the laws of the Old Testament, that makes us clean now. The moron president should know that his questions are already answered.
