Yes it's great until one meets that numskull that ignores the rules of navigation, always keep right unless depth of water or bridge clearance dictates otherwise and always pass oncoming vessels Port side to Port side.

I've visited Cambridge a few times and always enjoyed punting on the river. There's a famous pub called The Eagle where Crick and Watson went to have a pint after they discovered the structure of DNA. Also, in the pub, the ceilings have the names of air force crews who scorched their names on there with lighters during WW2.

@@DaydreamersBarn Besides the Eagle, some of the best pubs are off of side streets of Mill road. You must try the Cambridge Blue, the Kingston Arms or Calverley's tap room (if it's open)? The Maypole too if you like Italian food and if you can find Portugal Place near that theatre you passed?

I have a vivid memory of visiting one of the oldest University Colleges in Cambridge. it was 1970, I was 17 and had met a gorgeous young guy in Cambridge when I was there visiting an old schoolfriend. I wasn't sure what he did exactly, but he had great taste in music and volunteered at the local Arts Theatre. He'd written to me for a few months and I decided to go up to Cambridge to surprise him with a visit.... He was a little put out by my arrival, as it turned out he had to go out on some sort of errand, so I went along with him. Diving into an ancient stone doorway and being admitted by an old doorkeeper, who was expecting us, we climbed a narrow, unlit, winding stone staircase between massive, ancient walls - it felt like going back through the centuries to medieval times! I've been in lots of ancient buildings, but this was by far the most atmospheric.
Finally arriving at the very top of the castle-like building, my friend pushed open a door and we were in a large, warmly lit room filled with the most intelligent looking but also super-cool-looking people I'd ever encountered, all sitting around in a large circle on the floor, looking up at us expectantly....to cut a long story short, it turned out that my beautiful but slightly mysterious friend was their drug dealer!! OMG! Still, a happy time was had by all as the (herbal) merchandise was tested out, the business was concluded and off we went again... Sadly (or maybe for the best) the relationship never really took off and the letters stopped.
He had long black hair and turquoise eyes and lived on Parker's Piece, which I think you drove past on your way out of the City Centre; it's like a little park, or village green, surrounded by some lovely houses. I still think of him sometimes (I have a lot of time for daydreaming these days..) and wonder what path his life took him after that memorable if slightly odd visit... but in any case, I'm so grateful I got that chance, through him, to get that glimpse of the student life of a venerable University College, and to soak up its extraordinary atmosphere for a brief time...

Jess, the problem with cities like Cambridge - and Oxford - is that the local councils are vehemently 'anti car,' and as such their traffic management is designed to deny access by car to the city centres and maybe other areas too. Which is why you'll find a plethora of 'No Entry' signs and signs with multiple warning instructions on them which you're expected to have read whilst still trying to watch what other traffic/pedestrians are doing. Usually you only manage to read one of the signs before you've driven past it, and the other four signs you needed to comply with. What they would really like you to do is park up in the outskirts and take a bus into the centre. Indeed, lots of places operate 'park and ride' systems. Generally speaking J&C, bus lanes are fairly easily identifiable in that the lane is separated from other lanes by a continuous thick white line. Also, not all bus lanes are 24/7. Many are only a designated bus lane during the morning and late afternoon rush hours, and at the start of the bus lane they will state those hours, meaning that outside of those designated hours it's not a bus lane and you're free to drive in it. Unfortunately most motorists are 'bus lane conditioned' and will blindly drive next to the bus lane in convoy with others and then suddenly pull across in front of you when the bus lane comes to an end.

    Hi both,
Im a bit late to the party and have just discovered your wonderful channel. No comments about punts, but about tea and tea making. George Orwell wrote and essay ‘A nice cup of Tea’ which is freely available on the internet. He also wrote other articles and essays on the countryside and England. Some other authors and poets that wrote about the countryside are Thomas Hardy and A E Housman. There is also one of the Romantic poets called John Claire who came from Helpston, a village near Peterborough. He was sometime called the peasant poet as he was born into a very humble landworking family. His cottage is open to the public and next to the Bluebell Inn, one of his favourite haunts. 🙂🇬🇧

A pity it was a few days before the various May Balls, which meant there'd be construction workers putting up scaffolding/stages/canopies - resulting in all that noise! Cambridge has some very large park and ride schemes dotted round the edges of town. I used to use the Newmarket Road one, park up and get a dedicated bus into the town centre. It's not great for driving around, too many pedestrians and too many bikes make it a bit of a nightmare. The centre is gorgeous with a lot of independent shops and only takes an hour or two to wander around if you're shopping. 😃

One of my wife's family went to Oxford and he got married in the college chapel there. So I have been to family weddings in both Cambridge and Oxford colleges. My daughter lived in Cambridge for about 6 years while she did her Phd there, she had a job in the university so was able to do it for free. She now lives somewhere else though. When she was there and we visited we parked up at her house and walked into the centre and occasionally took a bus if the weather was too bad, one of my grandsons was born in Addenbrook's Hospital as a result. Another of my wife's family was a consultant doctor in Addenbrooke's for a long time.

The rain Gods spared you on the punts. lol. I love Cambridge, even if not very car-friendly. Park and ride is the best option. Kings College is absolutely amazing inside with striking black wood. I live 24 miles from Cambridge but usually only go there when I have relatives visiting from Italy, if they have never been. Oxford is also amazing but with more bicycles. Duxford Imperial War Museum is just south of Cambridge and has a dedicated American section with stealth planes on display. It is great that you are making the most of your stay in England. Punting is not difficult as long as you remember to pull the pole before the punt moves too far. On the plus side, the river Cam is not that deep.

It was afantastic day. We absolutely love to learn about all the history and just embrace the beauty of England. We are so thankful the rain held off, and we do agree Cambridge is not the best place for driving. We will write a train and do the buses from now on. We'll have to give punting on our own a try. Cheers 🤍 Jess & family x

It definitely was a fabulous day. Unfortunately, it was a rental vehicle because my vehicle was in the shop. The wiper was very annoying, and we tried to fix it but think a part needed to be replaced, but it's not our car to work on. So we took it back to the rental place. Cheers 🤍 Jess x

I hope once you had enjoyed your punting trip along The Backs, you completed it by popping into a cafe and having an afternoon cream tea?! That’s what I did - it was a deep joy … ☺️👍🏻
The memories you are making living here - I bet you can’t wait to tell all your friends when you go back to the US (sad times, don’t think about it! 🙁😪) about all the things you have done and experienced! Might take a few weeks to tell them everything though! 😳😄

I live a few miles out but it's only a couple of quid on the 'Guided Bus' to get into the City. A lot of people use the 'Park and Ride', which is worth looking at. Just beware of the last bus times? Otherwise take the train if you're going to have a couple of beers. The only time I drive in these days is if I'm going to the Corn Exchange for a concert.

This is going to be a very prejudiced comment. For I matriculated at Oxford University - although I didn't complete my degree. We have been rivals for seven centuries; Oxford was, of course, founded earlier, by at least 42 years... 'The Annexe', the 'Technical College in the Fens', are but two of the names we call 'The Other Place'.
You - and certainly your children - should certainly try punting. (Although you may well fall in...) In Oxford I have punted, on the River Cherwell. (Pronounced 'chah well'.) Cambridge undergraduates punt from the wrong end. If you don't use the pole as a rudder, you just zig-zag across the river. It is unwise to get too attached to the surprisingly big-and-heavy pole; the pole can get stuck in the mud... ( And the boat doesn t. Think about it...) Also, look up! If you tangle with a tree/ bridge, you can get neatly hooked out of the punt...
Even I have to acknowledge the King's College Chapel( completed 1500) is one of the most beautiful buildings in the UK. The Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols held there at Christmas, and and a similar event at Easter, ate must-sees.

    Hi all,
Great channel. I’ve only just discovered it. I thought that you might be interested in an essay that George Orwell wrote on making Tea. It’s called ‘A nice cup of Tea’ and is a whimsical look at Tea ☕️ preparation and freely available on the internet. He also wrote essays on the English, England and nature.
There is another place to visit that might interest you is John Claire’s cottage in Helpston near Peterborough. He is sometimes called the peasant poet and was something of a prodigy, being born into a land working family. His poems are largely about nature and he’s associated with the Romantic literary tradition. The cottage is next to the Bluebell pub, one of his haunts and has good beer and food.

Hiya. Only a few points - Thought you'd have to use the Park & Ride scheme for going into Cambridge, but probably just as well you didn't as you might have got soaked. Think Chris might need to get his wiper blades sorted out, though. No? I used to go to Cambridge for Tea fairly often, back in the day and then, at other times, to pop into the cheesemongers, The Cambridge Cheese Company. Any excuse for a trip! Sound level in the car, fine, sound level in the punt, waste of time. Btw, did you all have your brollies with you, 'just in case'? Stay safe. All the best to you.
