In this video, Chris and I enjoy a drive exploring England and find a beautiful Castle Acre Village and the Priory. The abundance of castles in the UK is just amazing to me! One thing that makes your videos SO different to, and so much more interesting than, most others doing this, is how you show the places and journeys in depth, taking your time. And explain in detail as you walk what you see, what you feel, and what you learn. This latest one was absolutely fascinating for that - not least because I had no idea these places were there! And I was brought up not that many miles away, in Northeast Leicestershire.
Such a refreshing change to all those videos that just show a few seconds of a string of places, often of just the money shots. With you, you know what you are saying is totally genuine, and it really feels like I am there and experiencing what you are. And have time to take it all in. Again, many thanks guys - another really interesting and lovely video.

You're absolutely right, farmers in the UK get subsidies for making some fields "wild meadows" to help the native insect, bird, and wildlife populations.

Those three planes were Typhoons from Coningsby. Depending whether this was yesterday they were either going to or returning from the King’s Birthday Parade , Trooping the Colour, in London. If Friday probably practising for yesterday. Lovely video. Thank you. 🥰

People are all saying Typhoons out of Coningsby, but that is 40 miles away. Whereas RAF Marham (Jess asked if it was Marham in the video) is only six miles away down the road, and that is where the Lightening IIs are based. Given their height, my money is on it being more likely three of the four RAF F35-Bs that took part in the flypast?

When I was a child the meadows were full of wildflowers but modern farming methods destroyed them. Woods too were carpeted with bluebells

It is true that wild flowers are less common than they were. But now the government gives subsidies to farmers to allow some of their land to be re-wilded. A good move, it will help bees and other pollinators as well as doormice too.

I'm talking back in the 60s. There were wildflowers then you don't see now. Used to be a lot of foxgloves

The Castle Acre Priory was used to film scenes from the 1964 Roger Corman horror film _The Tomb of Ligeia_ starring Vincent Price. There are scenes from the film you can find on CZcams of Price and other actors doing their stuff in the Priory ruins and grounds in the film. It looks exactly the same today as it did in the film.

I think that was a copper beech. As you are EH members may I suggest Grimes Graves, Framlingham Castle and Orford Ness near you. Further a field Dover Castle is immense. I really appreciate your understanding of this island packed with treasures hidden down country lanes. Note the nearby buildings often constructed with material nicked from the ruins.

"material nicked from the ruins". Indeed so, also called denuded material. A 19th century scholar visiting Caerphilly Castle in South Wales observed that the greater presence of ancient stones, corbels and suchlike antiquities were more to be seen in local cattle sheds, byres and pig sties than in their original lying.

If you haven’t been you should go to the Iron Age fort called British camp, in the Malvern hills, Worcestershire. It’s a three thousand year old man made encampment one of the biggest and best preserved in Europe, it’s trust truly amazing.

Some say if you visit Castle Acre castle on a quiet morning, you might spy the solitary ghostly figure dressed in a yellow raincoat, who always seems to stay two steps away until vanishing into thin air …

Because monasteries used to be supported by "tithes" (basically a tax) they got a portion of all the crops grown in the local area, which usually meant they had a good supply of Barley to make beer with, which they'd sell back to the local community as a further source of income for the Church.

Castle Acre is one of my favourite places in East Anglia. I think that the closest example of how it originally looked would be Rochester in Kent. Castle and Abbey together. I also recommend you visit Burgh Castle near Great Yarmouth. This is the Roman fort which once overlooked the estuary before land reclamation. There are great views of the Broads. The walls still stand almost to their full height.

As ruins go that was quite well preserved, but I find the charm is the fact that for 1000 years, untold people have walked those grounds. You can imagine being an observer in a time machine as the people come and go. And think of the blood sweat and tears that went into building it. I had visions of you doing a video on using the NHS accident emergency service.
I absolutely agree with you and absolutely love to imagine being able to envision all of the people and what they thought and felt in the moments of walking through the ruins or at it once was back in the day. I have such a visual mind that I can just visualize things. I loved it when I was walking around where they would pray and be in deep thought. Love to think about how many people have walked that and done exactly what I done. It's so wonderful to see how they are today and learn the history of what they once were. Cheers 🤍 Jess x

The purple tree was a copper or purple beech. I have a massive one in my garden. You'll see them in most parts of the country. Can also be used for hedging. Nice Typhoons passing over, though they did rather shatter the peace. Beautiful castle and priory explore, they must have been so imposing in the landscape when new. Just lovely to watch with my feet up and a cuppa after an exhausting day gardening! Thanks for sharing.

A great video! If you are looking for more suggestions, the Roman city of Lincoln and the wider county of Lincolnshire is another great place to visit, and is just to the north of Norfolk. Lincoln cathedral was the tallest building in the world for over 200 years, and there is also a 950 year old Norman Castle there which houses one of only 4 copies of the Magna Carter in existence.

I love the countryside and those winding roads and country lanes lead somewhere with so much history. So true, imagining what those ruins would look like in their former glory. It was also a beautiful sight to see those RAF Typhoons flying above in synchronisation. But to walk amongst the ruins, listening to the birds is like meditation compared to city life.

Finding a castle or fort in England is not difficult! Note the Village buildings at 13:57. Much of the materials used in those buildings would have been pilfered from the walls of the abandoned castle, aiding its dereliction. Basically, in times past, the abandoned castle was a quarry, providing easy access to building materials for the locals.

Just come home from a long walk through woodland and parkland. Great to see a 'relaxed mowing strategy' on the park to encourage flora and fauna, because of a concerning decline in the UK. Wild grasses with bobbing seed heads of all shapes and sizes and colours are thriving. Lovely then, to get home, make a coffee to enjoy your video treat with the dramatic grey clouds. If you're ever in West Yorkshire you should check out Pontefract Castle, its in ruins now since Oliver Cromwell destroyed most of it during the English Civil War ,but there's still plenty to see ,you can even take a tour of the Dungeons at certain times of the day The Castle used to be known as the gateway to the North

Have yuo guys visited Castle Drogo in Devon. I bet you would love it. The last castle built in Britain. Well worth the journey. Tour round Dartmoor coudl easily be done during the same trip. Tavistock is a great place to stay.

Beautiful, I love these off the beaten track little gems, seems you had the place almost to yourself. I think some of the partly destroyed Abbeys and castles have a beauty all to themselves yet we still have plenty that escaped the ravages of henry V111 and the later civil war. Hope you keep up with your travels I always look out for your new ones on Sundays.

If you are interested in older fortifications you can also try to seek out some of the iron age/late bronze age hill forts across the country which often tend to get overlooked and are often in beautiful surroundings. Warham Camp is a decent one in Norfolk

Thanks for that tour,I was last there about 25 years ago but it hasn't changed. I noticed several molehills as you walked around the castle & priory, may I suggest giving them a quick glance around ancient sites because the moles are useful at digging up lost treasures. I heard of the ruins of a Roman Villa that was discovered when pieces of a mosaic floor were unearthed in a molehill, also a Roman coin hoard on another site when the gleam of qold glinted on a molehill. You never know... :-)

‘Unearthed-Digging for Britain’ has only been around for a decade or slightly less & is presented by Professor Alice Roberts. I suggest you start with this as it distillates the arduous ‘digging bit’, focusing more on the finds. Alice Roberts is a superb host. I could send a link if you like?

I so love walking old ruins..and these were a joy to see, if only from a distance. One can only imagine the priory in its heyday with all the working and meditating monks. Such enormous structures must have taken years, even decades to complete. Thank you Jess and Chris for a relaxing and totally enjoyable video.

As you'd expect, water was crucial to survival during the Norman and medieval periods when a lot of these stone abbeys were built. Not only as a source of life directly (for brewing beer to drink, the water itself being too dirty to drink without boiling it first and adding alcohol as a sterelising agent), but also to store fish to eat (fish ponds in streams were common) and for moving goods and people around quicker and more easily than walking.

03:00 That building on the left looks to me as though it was originally built as a barn. The clue is with the very tall window that would originally have been the entrance from the road and tall enough to accommodate horse drawn carts piled high with hay and other produce. Another indication is that of the very narrow slits to either side which are bordered with brick. They would have given some ventilation to the produce stored inside.
As stated by others, those jets were Typhoons (Eurofighters) and given their formation possibly practising for the Flypast on the King's Birthday which follows the Trooping of the Colour. 🙂

Gosh this takes me back. We went to Castle Acre castle and priory when I was at school (a shocking long time ago. I seem to recall the boys trying to scare us with ghost stories! If you are ever in Devon, visit Buckfast Abbey which is a working abbey where they make their own mead. It's a lovely place. Well done for braving our dismal summer (haha) weather - you are real troopers! Apparently, walking in the rain, or just after it's rained, is really good for us because it generates so many negative ions! Who knew?

Americas, walking, sounds like an oxymoron. 🙂🙂🙂 Again, the Priory stones would have been pilfered for local buildings after the priory was closed by Henry the 8th. There's plenty of intact old castles you could go and see. Arundel Castle in West Sussex is one that's well worth a visit.

Please try to visit the Abby Gardens in Bury St Edmunds if you have not already done so. You would be walking in the footsteps of other American airforce flyers who chose that place to find some peace from the stress of missions over Germany in 1943. Try to find a copy of "Wild Blue Yonder" to get a feel for other 8th Airforce compatriots views on the strange but friendly Brits in welcoming farms and pubs. Your thoughts are very similar to theirs.

Given the height and speed and timing, I'd suggest more likely three of the four F-35B Lightening IIs that took part in the flypast. Those are based at RAF Marham, about six miles away. If they were Typhoons out of RAF Conningsby, around 40 miles away, I think they would be flying much higher?

No definitely Typhoons.The Canards just behind the nose section are visible.F35s do not have these.
Those Boots come with a volume control. If your ever in Cheshire. Drop in on Beeston Castle. When you go over the moat into its centre, The view out over Cheshire is amazing. Very shear edge, But a long incline up there. Oulton park race track is very close by. Not far off M6 junction 19.

If you like ruins, try Caerleon, just north of Newport in Wales. You have a wonderful Roman ampithetre there, likely viewed just by your family and the occasional dog walker, unlike Bath! There is also the remains of a Legionnaire's barracks, and a Roman Baths, with a museum. Great food in numerous pubs etc there.
And you could make it part of a trip to the Western end of the Brecons, where you will find the 'Waterfalls Walk' 8.5 miles all around, where admittedly you have the inconvenience of walking underneath a waterfall! ;-) but there are several other waterfalls on the walk, and you could take in the magnificent Caerphilly castle on the way to Caerleon, and finish up by Chepstow castle before exiting Wales....

If you want to see an intact Roman fort, visit Potrchester Castle in Portsmouth Harbour. You could always visit HMS Victory too.

Henry VIII did a thorough job with the dissolution of the Monasteries but not quite that thorough, he stole the land and anything of value and rendered buildings uninhabitable and unusable by burning out. The local population then used the stone for construction over the intervening centuries. Many a 16th century and after building or bridge will have stone in it from a nearby old Catholic Monastery, Abbey, Church or Nunnery.
It's sad that the beauty was destroyed, but history is now being preserved for others to see. I'm just thankful for the opportunity to learn and explore. Cheers 🤍 Jess x
Do you mind me saying that the dash camera needs lowering slightly as the bright sky tends to darken the lower half and gives the impression of driving in the evening … if you review your videos you will see what I mean .. the videos whilst on foot are perfect … thnx for your wonderful posts 😉. Thank you for your input. Unfortunately, it would show so much of the hood of the vehicle and less of the beauty of what the road/ skys are... We have definitely played around with the placement. What's really impressive about sites like this castle is the vast amount of ground that was moved to form mounds and very deep ditches. Often a natural feature i.e. a hill was the site, but all earth and rocks were dug out and moved by hand, no machinery. That was before high thick stone walls were constructed on the top. No cranes only wheelbarrows and ropes. There must have been a small army of workers involved and it would have taken years to complete.

The planes you saw were probably from R.A.F Lakenheath which is pretty close to your location there, just over the border in Suffolk. It is the largest U.S. Airforce base in the U.K.

If you are going to be here for any length of time you should join the national trust. They have a couples membership, before covid me and my beloved were members and its dirt cheap for the ammount of places you can get free entry too once members. Not all stately homes and castles are in the national trust but you have a massive choice. Any road up whatever you do enjoy it.

@@DaydreamersBarn I lived Near Manchester at the time of my membership and limited myself for health reasons to no more than a 2 hour drive that still gave me a bunch of places to visit, if you are around the Cheshire area and you have not already been I would reccommend Tatton Park and Dunham Massey (one of these you used to have to pay to park even if a member but I cant remember which one). On a nice summers day if we ever get one both places are well worth the price of membership.

Just think how much better it would have been had the skies not been so grey, but then you probably would have had trouble finding somewhere to park. That the priory is in ruins - you have Henry VIII to thank for that. Basically Henry was a Catholic and was obsessed with producing a son to inherit his crown. His first wife - Catherine of Aragon - had 'failed' him in this matter, and so he wanted to divorce Catherine so he could marry Anne Boleyn instead. The Pope/Catholic Church refused him permission and ultimately kicked him out. He formed the Anglican Church of England of which he was the head - a position the reigning monarch hold's to this day - and thus England and Wales became Protestant. As a result, he had a major strop and threw his toys out of the cot, and dissolved all the monasteries (because they were Catholic) destroying them in the process. Monasteries tended to be quite rich establishments, so he sequestered all their funds for himself. And that's why there are numerous ruined monasteries all over England and Wales.

Was the camera man dropping a salt trail just incase you get lost.
