    Traded in my 2015 1290 SA for a 1290 Super Adventure S, I just love this bike it really is an amazing machine, they seem to have just got everything to work better than the 1290 SA. Now the contentious bit, the Super Adventure S versus the GS, what the GS does far better is integration with the Sat Nav and if you what a shaft drive then it’s a GS.
    What the 1290 gives you is a totally engaging riding experience with an engine and gearbox that is magical, add the quick shifter and it just brings it to a new level of superlative. I also enjoy the individuality of the 1290, I guess that there are so many GS’s on the road is a mark of its quality but it also makes it somewhat commonplace.
    Where BMW do score is in the dealer experience, you need to find a great KTM dealer and not all of them are. You can be pretty sure that every Motorrad dealer will look after you not always the case with KTM’s network, however, having found one I like I am prepared to travel some way to get my KTM needs sorted.
    The GS is a great bike but the 1290 S gives me bigger ticks in more boxes.

    Integrating the SatNav into the awesome instrument cluster/display unit and Programmable LED cornering lights such that they all can be used at the same time for extra illumination are 2 great suggestion for KTM to implement in their next iteration.

    Great review guys with reference to the chain drive. We had a customer that had a long trip planed on a 1190 Adventure R he has covered 27000 miles on the same chain and sprockets. Here is what he said.
    The DID has done very well. Richard fitted it new before I set off to Magadan 27,200 miles ago. Good going on a 150hp v-twin, in a wide range of conditions from the sands of Mongolia and Morocco, to the gritty mud of the Road of Bones. Lasted longer than most GS final drives :-D Hardly ever been cleaned apart from with a pressure washer. The majority of credit must go to my Scottoiler, which I've always run with the bare minimum of oil flow.

  • @bampie1
    @bampie1 Před 7 lety +4

    I was very interested in the comments around the quickshifter and the fact that it was not up to the standard of the BMW. Having ridden both bikes I would have to agree with that conclusion, however, there is a much better system out there and that's the DCT gearbox on the Honda Crosstourer it is probably the best gearbox I have ever used. It is funny when other bikers who are happy to ride with a quickshifter comment that they would never ride an automatic, well apart from using the clutch to start and stop the bike the only difference with the DCT is you use levers on he handlebar to change gear instead of the gear lever but Honda provide a gear lever option. The DCT option should be available on all bikes in my opinion

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  Před 7 lety +1

      +bampie1 good point mate. My mate has an Africa twin fitted with an auto clutch. Quite strange as I've only ridden a clutched bike but he says the same that it's so smooth. Gotta try one now :)

    • @bristolbiker5735
      @bristolbiker5735 Před 6 lety

      Interestingly the resale values of a DCT are far lower than that of a clutched bike, when I traded in my NX750 the dealer was really concerned that it might be a DCT model.

    love this bike, and love that it does not have a heavy, power robbing, ugly shaft drive! people don't realize a good chain and sprocket can match or outlast shaft components with very little maintenance while keeping weight down and power up... ... ktm made a wise decision not to follow suit with other shaft bikes... ps... any issues with heat???

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  Před 6 lety

      A great bike indeed, and what power too! I think you do get some heat from the pipes under the seat, although you can get a cover for them from KTM for mitigate the amount of heat coming through. But great bike all the same :)

  • @Lindavemarineandforestry

    there is a ktm app for your phone, if you download it you can pair the phone with the bike and you can use your phone as a satnav and the directions appear on the tft screen, also if you have an intercom paired with the phone you will get voice direction as well

    Very good informative review thanks.A couple of points I think should be mentioned,KTM do not do a low seat version of this bike so for riders like myself,5ft 9" with 29" inside leg,it's a lost sale for KTM.This model is I think,is aimed at the touring rider hence the cast wheels.At first look,the bike seems well priced at £14200 but when you kit it up for even basic touring specs,your getting near £1700 mark.Everything a tourer needs for example heated grips,is an optional extra! what's that all about?To sum up,Yes a great bike but I'll be staying with my fully speced GS TE LC,with the low seat option.

    Wow that looks like a serious impressive bike. I've always been drawn to BMW because of the tech, but KTM are now ahead. Shame the cruise control isn't designed to work in 20/30 limits as I find it great for that. Sure I could tolerate a chain for that screen alone! Many thanks for the review guys, I'm off to join the KTM forum now :-)

      +DervMan I'm with you on the cruise control. I use it all the time in 20's and 30's. that screen is certainly going to put other manufacturers under pressure I'm sure. Glad you liked the review :)

    • @TheDervMan
      @TheDervMan Před 7 lety +3

      I am surprised none of the manufacturers have added the option of a speed limiter. It's something I use continuously in the car, in fact it's made the cruise control redundant, well other than on quiet motorway journeys. With the hike in speeding fines it's a feature I'd love to see, especially on a bike with this amount of grunt!

    I hope they manufactured that coloured screen to a higher standard than the switchgear. My left side handlebar switch failed on my 1290SA...covered under warranty, but they should be built to last more than 1500km. Apparently it's a known problem.

    The only reason for the floating luggage are the instability problems at high speed (150+ km/h) of the previous 1190 models. There was also a report about a serious accident. Not really relevant in UK or Austria but seems to be very important for Germans :P

    Thanks again for an extremely holistic review of this new bike. I'm still torn on a new adventure bike. I'm selling a Diavel Strada that's seeing very little use and was considering either the new Multi S 1200 or a GS Rally or now this...Help me decide! We've got miserable road conditions here but I'm not planning any off-road excursions. I also have a BMW Scrambler that i absolutely love (no LKnobby tires don't worry!) but I need a weekend bike that is comfortable, but also won't make me miss my Diavel too much! Also, how is the clutch feel on this bike? After riding an HD street glide for so long, I now have severe left wrist tendinitis and the Scrambler riding position doesn't help on long journeys either. That's where the GS really shines I guess (comfort) but I have zero experience with KTMs. Is the clutch feel hard like the BMW XR for example? Oh and thanks!!!! Keep up the amazing work!

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  Před 7 lety

      +Houssam Chihabi thanks for your really kind words, it's really appreciated :)
      Out of the multi S or the GS rallye, I'd choose the rallye (but that personal choice) but for me it's a GS that looks awesome, is tweaked and you know what your getting, although I would invest in a centre stand :)
      On the KTM a front, I was amazed by the 1290 super adventure S. A really capable bike that is fun to ride, got loads and loads of power and will certainly put a smile on your face. The clutch was light and firm, certainly didn't feel hard. The whole bike just 'flowed' :)
      Ride safe buddy.

      @RiderCamTV  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the kind words matey.
      The floating luggage is to maintain the integrity of the luggage itself and the contents. It’s designed to move slightly to not only stop things inside jolting around too much but also to stop them getting damaged and reducing the oscillation (keeping the bike more stable) of the bike when moving, particularly at speed.

    Thanks Toby and Mark for another great video. Very impressed with that screen and as you say, it brings in into the 21st century; however, the contrast is the very 70's looking hydraulic reservoir! I do like the bike but would only consider one if it had shaft drive; spoke with Simon Weir from Ride magazine about it last year and he said he didn't think KTM sold enough bikes to warrant the research and development. Maybe they would if they put the investment in! Ride safe guys. Cheers, Andy

      That would actually do away with the gearbox and need for a quickshifter too.
      Probably it's something totally different though.

    Maybe you wouldn't get a judder when using the quick shifter if you actually opened the throttle significantly, and moaning about the vibration in 6th gear at 40mph is ridiculous, as your obviously in the wrong gear!

      @RiderCamTV  Před 7 lety +1

Other thing is how thin it might be, kind of got used to the battleship like dimensions of the GSA so it may be a bit 'small' if you know what I mean. The dash, power, electronics etc sure make it look like a tempting package though. Anyway, stay safe mate and keep up the good work (just gonna check out a few more of your vids).

      +Mark Mclean I strangely loved the thinness of it, although I know my heart lies in my GSA. Hope you enjoy our other vids. Great to have you as a subscriber ;)

      It's definitely one I am going to look at and then if the positives outweigh the negatives of the chain drive I may well consider it. Speaking to the local BM dealer though he reckons the GSA is due a fairly big update next year....

    Nice! 1 question however...Does the 2017 KTM super adventure S digital "screen" come with the a Navigation display?

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  Před 7 lety +1

      +E. Simons hi, thanks for the question and comments. The display is not yet equipped with sat nav although speaking to the dealer it's something that could possibly be a future upgrade. So I think a separate sat nav is the way to go at present. Hope this helps :)

      +M Rajsic it depends what your looking for in a bike, it is a great machine :)

    • @chrismalloy7688
      @chrismalloy7688 Před 7 lety +2

      M Rajsic I currently have a 2015 SuperAdv with a view to changing it. In the last few weeks I have tried the GSA and Multistrada S versions on extended test rides. Previously I have owned 2 x GS bikes and the GSA and MS were always on my wish list. First off was the MS and this was my very first ride on a MS. Into the Northumbria roads round Hadrian's Wall and the bike was very good to ride. The weather wasn't good and I was fighting against strong side winds. Couldn't even hear the engine due to the wind noise, but could that bike pull. Typical Duke engine and I have had a few 1098 engine bikes. This was a bike I could live with and it was ideal for my regular 30" inside leg where my higher seat KTM fills me with apprehension when I need to stop. With only 6 miles on the clock the gearbox was very tight with quite a few false neutrals but this would free up in time. Not as comfy or rider protected as the KTM but still great to ride. Next day was a ride out round Durham on the GSA, the bike I wanted to love so I had left it till last. I knew from previous GS bikes that this was going to be smoother than the KTM and again easier to handle due to the lowered suspension for us height deficient chaps. Didn't disappoint in most areas and I would be more than happy with one especially the seating position where one sits "IN" a GSA against sitting "ON" the KTM. Creamy smooth for a twin and brill switch gear combined with the Motorrad sat nav unit. Not so good points include the "box of hammers" engine noise and this bike had only covered 300+ miles. It was a windless day so whereas yesterday I couldn't hear the Duke, today no wind noise and sitting in comfort, the engine noise was evident. On a quick comparison, it appeared to be quite thirsty over the KTM with normal riding but I'm sure this would be reversed if pushed hard against the KTM. The only problem I ever had with my previous GS's was top end acceleration. 95% of the time it was the only bike you would ever need but when it needed to be pushed on motorways it was just lacking that extra bit of grunt. This is still evident with this 125bhp model too. No doubt it is quicker than old but compared to the KTM or Duke, it is a more relaxed gentleman's ride. On good country roads it would not be disgraced and could be well in front if in capable hands, but it hasn't got that extra grunt when required. Overall, all great bikes and I would be more than happy with any. But my next choice is going to be the new KTM SuperAdv S. Bike ordered and I'm still going to be apprehensive about dropping the bike when coming to a stop. But it's in between the stops that matters.

      The Ducati box does not free up, the false neutrals are there forever (unless you mod them) and if anything the shifting will get notchier and clunkier and in the case of mine 4th gear disappeared completely! By comparison the KTM gear shift (I did 300km on a 1050 today) is silky smooth.

    It does not come with the option of spoked wheels. Please before you guys decide to try a review on bikes brush up on your product knowledge.
    Ps unlike BMW the back of your legs d0 not get dirty at all.

      It has spoked wheels (cast spoked wheels) as standard and you can get wire spoke wheels as options, they are in the configurator ... you end up with two sets of wheels though.

    Don't see the point of the S (for street) variant. If you're only ever gonna ride on the street, get a BMW XR. Lighter, more composed and agile due to shorter suspension travel, better sound. If only the 'R' had the semi-active suspension and the taller screen of the 'T'...

    KTM DOES NOT WARRANTY THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM!!! BIG TIME DEAL CHANGER, IT WILL COST THE CONSUMER A FORTUNE TO REPLACE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS. LOOK ELSEWHERE!

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  Před 6 lety

      that's a bit short sighted of them. I'm sure under the consumer protection and sale of goods act for an item having to be serviceable for a reasonable amount of time (in the UK) would help to overcome this if there were issues, but nevertheless it's not good if it's not included in the warranty.

      That's right, nothing more beautiful than a group of motorcyclists sharing the same road, the same joy, same passion, carry education and respect in the suitcases, wherever they go, earn more friends, are values that are found in rugby! In football, it is violence and stupidity, to fall apart, that there are many lovers of football in BMW, but there are also many lovers of rugby in KTM! Now that's what matters!
