The Chinese people of Penang, Malaysia are mostly from Zhangzhou and still speak the language.
OMG, I have been there too, what a coincidence. too bad it was a short time and don't have a vlog about it
so true, i was in penang not long ago, and most of ppl there speaks cantonese and mandarin lol
True, but only Singapore and Malaysian Hokkien is easier for Minnan speakers to understand. Penang Hokkien, the dialect created and spoken by the Peranakan in Penang has developed differently and became a separate branch of the Minnan dialect, when we talk to Minnan speakers, they could not understand us as we have different pronounciations or words. I did an experiment before when I visited Taiwan, I can understand them but they could not understand all 40 tourists from Penang who speaks Penang Hokkien. This makes Penang Hokkien speakers more unique compared to other Hokkien speakers who are closely similar to Minnan dialect. Unfortunately, this dialect is on its way to extinction as many schools don't allow dialects to be spoken or even teach us the dialect. I learned it from my grandparents and kids these days are not able to communicate fluently with it

Zhangzhou Minnan is one of 4 Minnan languages, the other 3 being Quanzhou, Teochew or Chaoshan, and Hainamese. Xiamen speaks a mixture of Zhangzhou and Quanzhou since it attracted migrants from both districts after it became a British treaty port following the First Opium War.
Everyone is so energetic and the weather is good. It’s so fun!❤❤❤
What a unique and lovely way to keep the tradition going and to demonstrate the community spirit!
Oh dear, Katherine. You know China much better than we native Chinese do! 😅
Something never change, old traditions die hard. Thanks Katherine and may the deities bring you good health, happiness over the years and beyond!!! ❤❤❤
once again Aysajan showed us how NewB a social butterfly he is!
Yes, this energetic, inclusive and beautifully organised event definitely worth your effort and us watching and enjoying it! :D
Great to see there's a sense of community with so many people participating in this cultural event.
It's so happy, it reminds me of the Dragon Quest in the Three Rivers of Jiangmen during the Chinese New Year. It will pass through every house in the town. The Golden Dragon is 30 meters long and requires a lot of people to lift it up. Once someone gets tired, others will carry it up, and the people of the whole town will participate. It lasts for 5-6 hours, super happy
hope I can see that someday!
After watching your video about this parade, now I know why places where there are Fujian (Hokkien) communities like what we have here in Malaysia, there will always be deities parades during the last day of Chinese New Year. Thanks, Katherine for your appreciations of the Chinese cultures.
Love y sooo much sweety! I came from Fujian Province and it's soooo grateful to see you promoting our custom to foreign world, I will keep stay tune for every video you make, thanks for liking Fujian Province, it's indeed the most ceremonial place in China when it comes to rural Chinsese New Year
Love your videos, Katherine!!!Showing a real China and the local culture. Amazing!
Good to see that community spirit is still pretty much alive in China. Thank you so much for making the video.
Your videos are excellent. I look forward to seeing the next one.
Black madona in the west and black diety in China! ! 😊😊😊. I need to go there to experience it in 2026. I will experience something like this in Malaysia next year. Love from Canada.
We the Chinese community had a similar but much bigger parade around the city centre of Kuching Sarawak just couple of days ago.
Same as in Penang and KL. But the Penang parade will close off the city
This is eye-opening. Never seen this before. Thanks for sharing another great video. You and Aysajan make a good team!
Hello my good friend
The ride was great
Be successful and happy and healthy🌹🌹🌹❤❤❤❤
What a delight. Greetings from Florida. Woke up to Katherine this morning. Thanks for another great video.
11:53, for a second I though Aysajan got all the balloons tied to his backpack, hahaha ,what a UP moment!
Me too, that would've been hilarious! 🤣
My ancestors were all from fujian would love to see them all in fujian
4:30 Cannot believe Aysajan joined the core group like that. This guy is one smooth social starlet, LOL. Bravo!!!
I am also learning more and more from your videos about different parts of China and Chinese culture & civilization. Great and amazing work!!
This would make a good, unique running event.
Congratulations Katherine and China. I'm loving your work in places further away from cities. Show people more about the progress of Chinese living conditions. It seems that the West uses halters with eye protection. They are blind for convenience.
Fujian's Chinese New Year is so colourful and unique. You and your friends are such great sports. Love these videos.

6:40 Ok, by reading the tablet, the "deity" that is being celebrated here should be Xie An (谢安), a famous leader back to 320-285 AD. He was very influential, but I am still surprised to see that he is being celebrated to such a high level at this day. Amazing.
谢安(Xian An)is worshipped as a deity 廣惠王in Fujian,Taiwan and SE Asia communities with large population of Chinese diaspora.
Katherine, you show a real China, great!
It's not only in China, almost in all of Southeast Asian countries with Chinese diaspora!
loving the running open, K-dawg....very trainspotting.... choose rural.... choose villages.... choose a big fn procession....
my chinese teacher is making us watch these but this is chill 👍
Wow you literally had to run for that parade - the things you do! 😁 We appreciate it
I’m here for the socialist core values my comrade. I am waiting for more video of wuhan
@@binhe6500 haha yeah they are coming bro 😅
Thanks for sharing another great video, Katherine. It is just amazing, fun-filled, and informative. Wishing you good health and happiness. Cheers!🍻🙏
wow, everyone is enjoying the event 🥰
Katherine, you should come to putian fujian next year. It is different and more fun
Katherine is a wonderful, lovely girl.
People's accent was so simillar to Taiwan people.😃
haha, you must didn't know almost 98% taiwan people come from china. most from fujian
most taiwanese' ancestors are from fujian
@@mccoywang6671thank you for that information 👏👍
😂😂 It is like saying "My granddad takes after me!!!
Taiwan people are descendants of people here.
Great video as always!❤
I believe Singapore has very similar thing called chingay parade. Must from same culture background. In Singapore, usually they have decorated trucks, a bunch of them, drive around whole City.
would love to see it someday!
Malaysia, Penang also have the Chingay Parade.
really like your friends from Xiangiang, they are halarious
U may come to visit Tai O, Hong Kong. We have a similar culture of carrying all the dieties in temples to tour around water alley ways to being fortune to families living in huts building along the seashore. For Tai O, the local people carry the dieties by dragon boats. It is very special and can only be found in Tai O, a small fishing village.
Love this series.
Thank you for your amazing videos as always Katherine!
An other great video Katherine.cant wait for the next one actually..enjoy x
That was great. Looks like so much fun
Another epic vlog. So vivid. Enjoy your extended holiday, Kate.
Thank you!
amazing video, love to see Katherine expore rural life and culture to us, just can't wait for the next video. 😊
Katherine you should consider upgrading your camera set up to a DJI pocket 3. I think it would help you a lot. It has lots of great features like a built in 360 camera gimble with auto tracking. So if you have a person or object of interest you can focus on where you are going and the camera can stay focused on the subject. It also has a built in detachable mic that syncs with the camera gimble so when you turn on the camera the mic will auto turn on and can be detached from the camera set up and placed on your shirt and the camera can record you from far away but still hear what you are saying or whomever the mic is attached to. It also has camera mounts you can attach the gimble to a bike or a helmet and use it hands free while the gimble tracks your target. The best part is the DJI pocket 3 is very small and can fit in your pocket. I hope you see this 😁😁
Thanks for showing this video. You are lucky to be there. I don’t even know about this. Thanks again.
so much fun! I want to go where you have been in Fujian next Chinese New Year to see it for myself!
Katherine vlogs are quite unique. Love seeing the old traditions and different ethnics in China.
Wow! This is so exciting! Thank you once again for sharing this! :)
Besides the large deities, I saw there was like a small deity? That'll be the one that I would like to carry and run with! :P
yes, the tiny one is so cute haha but I hardly ever caught up with him, not easy to find in the crowd 😂 the big ones you can see from very far away
Can't wait to watch your tulou video!
Great info very unique parade one of a kind awesome cat love Yr video with great update n info
Amazing, they are doing all this every year, year after year for celebration.
Thanks for showing this to the world via YT. ❤
Very interesting local pageant. Thanks Katherine.
Thanks!
thanks for supporting the channel ❤️

Great folk religion customs! This parade is really very interesting to watch, but also enjoyable. Thank you for sharing❤
Okay, I'm convinced! I have to experiencenew year in Fujian. All the traditions you've shown have been so fun! I love a parade! I love a turtle made from rice! Give it all to me!
love you, love, love❤❤❤❤
Lovely Tulou 💯💯💯
Hehe really looks like a great time!
hahahahahaha, run Katherine, run!
I like it.😊
You guys must be very tired!!😆😆But, Looks so much fun!!❤❤
Fujianese accent sounds so much like Taiwanese accent - I swear I wouldn't be able to tell the difference! 😁
A lot of these customs too reminds me of my parents & grandparents' generations in Taiwan.
Definitely would not want to ditch the baby with the bathwater. Taiwanese should not have to deny the majority's Chinese ancestry and heritage in order to find a uniquely Taiwanese identity.
DPP Govt cabinet is Japanese. Now you have the answer.
@@hclau218 Nay, DPP is just corrupt. What may have started out as a legitimate grievance against political parties from the mainland & possibly inspiration from the West has morphed into power grab.
Everything else is just spins & bastardisation of ideologies in the service of this power grab. Probably not that different from the historical warlords in motivation, just somewhat better at propaganda thanks to lessons learnt from the Anglo-European capitalists.
Yes, there may be some Japanese cultural influences. But Taiwanese are nothing like the Japanese.
👍👍👍
Welcome to my hometown! I used to live in the old town of Zhangzhou, near the archways shown at 13:45.
So much fun watching your videos showing the New Year parades in rural parts of Zhangzhou. These traditional activities were common in my childhood but are disappearing as the city grows, however, they are preserved so well in the rural areas!
Another amazing aspect of Zhangzhou you may have missed is the local snacks. There are so many different varieties of snacks like noodles, desserts, and fried foods. Welcome back and try them on your next trip:)
All the explosions and running made me feel like I was watching a war movie!
Lmao
Your camera is steady even when you run!
nice
Can't wait for the tulou videos.
tourists should come and see the excitement
🎉🎉🎉
Catherine, I am still enjoying your videos with a huge smile. They give off the fragrance of joy of life, of a surprising discovery, of an unpretentious pleasure. Be always blessed.
Now, if someone could explain : who are these deities? Animistic beliefs? Who or what they represent? Why they are black?
Many Chinese folk gods were people who made contributions to society in ancient times. After their death, they were revered as gods and worshiped in commemoration. The faces of some gods are black because believers burned incense to worship them, and after two to three hundred years of smoke, they turned black.

6 am lineup and still late for the deity parade, I never watched the movie but" run, rola run " title seen to be an inspiration, I know I would have LOVED to joined in the fun runs, since it was all day and all night , I believe I have the stamina to shed the pounds, hahaha. Curiosity appeared two ways street, traditional yet ppl didn't take too seriously to enjoy themselves, I think that's the point of easy going accepting inclusive, not conceited culture, so rare in this day and age. I believe Hakka people predominate in tulouship then exited from their persecuted psyche to settle successfully in Fujian for centuries. Are you flying your own drones in next vlogs Katherine, surprised you haven't done so already? how do you rate this experience in time of your life?
I don't have a drone right now, my ex is holding it hostage LOL. these drone shots are footage from online of a similar place. planning to buy a drone in a few months though, I have some big travel plans for 2025 , hope I can make it happen
