- There is a tiny fishing village off Japan's west coast, where humans are outnumbered by a burgeoning population of felines. The locals call it Cat Island. Seth Doane reports on the scenic spot where scores of cats are proving to be a potent tourist draw.

@Olivia Vaughan That island is not lucky to have cats. Not in that amount. Too many cats in one place are essentially a disease to the ecosystem. Birds, small rodents and mammals are going to have an extremely hard time dealing with this overbearing number of feline predators. The only inherently good thing about cats is that they are often cute, other than that there is no merit in having them as pets.

Yup.
I've heard that the reason for this is that the island once had silk manufactories. The mice kept eating the silkworms, that's why they introduced the cats. The silk industry is long gone, but the cats stayed.
That cute pair of Japanese people at the end who connected over their love of cats was low-key adorable.
