0:00 - Intro
0:32 - Power/Performance
SUB: 2.0 F4 152 hp 145 lbft
2.5 F4 182 hp 178 lbft
No turbo.
HRV: 2.0 I4 158 hp 138 lbft
No turbo
Both SUB engines get to 60 quicker than HRV
Subbie wins
1:34 - Hybrid
Neither offers
Subbie used to offer a PHEV - so they could again
Old one did 17 miles of range
So with same engines in the new one easy to add
2:22 - Fuel economy
HRV: 26/32 fwd
25/30 awd
SUB: 2.0 27/34
2.5
Subbie wins since it gets better fuel economy in the base 2.0 WITH awd than the HRV gets with fwd
3:13 - AWD & Offroad stuff
HRV fwd base, awd option
Any offroad stuff?
SUB awd std, X mode
Wilderness version
Trans oil cooler, tires, and half inch lift
This was always going to be a pretty easy one for the Subbie
4:33 - Ext design
In all honesty i dont LOVE the look of either of the cars, but I guess if i had to choose, it’d be the Crosstrek
I’ve just seen more examples and images online of them in wilderness trim or in some interesting offroad spec that looks more badass
The HRV is certainly more expensive and elegant looking so again, it’s pretty much a wash here
But since I have to offer a point, it’s going to the Subbie
5:07 - Price
HRV: 25,395 start
SUB: 26,290
But AWD is going to put it over the subbie in all trims
5:47 - Versatility & towing
HRV not rated for towing - nothing on honda media site
SUB mine here is the small engine so only 1500 lbs
BUT with the big engine and trans cooler up to 3500 lbs…allegedly
Just context, the bigger CRV is rated at 1500 lbs
Subbie is a beast here
7:05 - Interior build and quality
Subbie is much better than last gen
And dazzles with a big center screen BUT it’s materials and quality
HRV wins
8:17 - Tech
HRV gets std 7 in digital cluster and 7 in infotainment
EVERY trim gets ACP and AA
Going up to the EXL here gets you the 9 in center screen
Wireless charger
Wireless acp and aa
And 8 speakers
The Subbie gets dual 7 in touchscreen in the center
ACP & AA
4.2 in cluster TFT
BUT you can option up to the premium, sport, limited and wilderness trims
For the big 11.6 in infotainment screen
Up to 10 speakers with harmon kardon for limited trim
The subbie technically does offer a bigger screen and more speakers BUT even still i prefer the resolution, graphics, and responsiveness of the Honda system…plus i’ve had issues with Subbie bluetooth connections in the past
10:03 - Safety
HRV was IIHS top safety pick +
Subbie was…not
But for this year you do get eyesite across all trims
The driver assist suite here is decent but it hugs the right lane line which makes overtaking semis stressful
Honda sensing brings loads of STD equipment to HRV…and it all works really seamlessly
10:36 - Trunk space
HRV has significantly bigger trunk
Ironic since subbie is the camping brand and to go camping you need a lot of stuff
The new HRV for this gen gets noticeably bigger than last year
biggest in segment
While the subbie gets a little shorter and narrower..a weird thing to see
But the HRV doesnt get mountains or stream designs in its plastic and mats…
11:24 - Rear seats
The crosstrek isn’t completely uninhabitable by any means but its not exactly a place i want to spend a lot of time as someone over 6 foot
The HRV is palatial in comparison and i could more comfortably spend more time back here
It’s the same thing as the trunk, but the HRV is segment leading here on interior volume
12:27 - drive/livability
This point probably wont come as a huge shock to anyone, but the Subaru just isnt as refined
You can tell it’s the more affordable car
The cabin isn’t as isolated
The engine sounds pretty coarse
I mean it’s not BAD
BUT then immediately behind the wheel of the Honda it feel half a tier up
Hrv is better balanced
more refined
The engine may have less power, but the driving experience is more natural
It’s easier and more pleasant to drive the HRV

Special thanks to our Patrons for their support of the channel! Subaru Crosstrek or Honda HRV?
Subaru crosstrek hands down! I love the ride quality. Easy to park. Better looking in my opinion. Better gas mileage. Visibility. Sport trim on crosstrek is the best. I really got everything I need in my Subaru crosstrek.
glad to hear you're liking your car!
I am a huge Honda fan but I chose the Crosstrek Sport over the HRV for the same reasons you mentioned. I had waited 2 years for the HRV redesign but was very disappointed by how the exterior of the new generation looks.
@@user-po5bg8cq1gIn the same boat as you. Bought a 24 Limited and it's a perfect Cinderella vehicle for an active empty nester. The lack of power is overrated. The 2.5 is more than enough.
I’m currently driving a ‘21 Outback which I love but seriously tempted to downsize to the new Crosstrek next year. I think they’ve got the styling just right and, as I no longer need the space of the Outback it’ll be a toss up between that or the ‘25 Forester.
Y que tal yo quiero canbiar que tal te fue@@user-po5bg8cq1g
Drove them both. Went over them with a fine tooth comb. The Crosstrek won. And I am really happy with it.
excellent!
Thanks, thinking seriously to get a crosstrek.. just long wait time.
I turned down the HR-V for the 2024 Crosstrek. No regrets!
Nice!
Cant believe how "slow" the HRV is compared to the stats. It actually has more HP than the base Crosstrek, but is down on torque. It is not really slow, but everybody disses on the Crosstrek base engine, while the HRV is actually a bit slower, with no optional engine. Both are nice though. Personally, I would choose the Crosstrek for at least as much power, better AWD system, and styling. The HRV just looks kind of weird to me.
When winter comes can you do a impreza / crosstrek snow review? Great to have a reviewer in WI! Thanks for the comparison!
Standard AWD on the Crosstrek is a HUGE distinction that cannot be understated. And if you option AWD on the HR-V, there are comparison videos on CZcams that show it being almost comically incompetent off road when comparing to a Crosstrek. Agree that the HR-V has a nicer interior, though.
Compare with AWD Rav4 of Toyota .. Crosstrek is far behind , even 20% of Subaru is Toyota .. but cheap if you compare equipements and fuel .. on hybrid 2024 Crosstrek .. the double of Hybrid 2023 Rav4 !
My girlfriend has an HRV, it’s not at home off the pavement. Useless. The Crosstrek is better but the CVT and head gasket issues will stop me from owning one.
But I don’t think the hr-v is really marketed as an “off road” vehicle. It’s more for people that loved the civic but need more space and awd. Subarus are known for their rally history and awd capabilities so of course it’ll be better. I feel like I’ve definitely gotten what I’ve paid for with my hr-v. Does just fine in the ice and snow if you’re not off roading. All of my buddies that hunt have trucks or Subarus because they’re always driving through farm land and driving through woods to get to their blind. So it’s definitely up to what your needs are. Also when has Honda ever been known for its awd🤷🏻♂️
Wait wait i have a 24 sport do they all come with hill decent? 😊
My coworker has a Crosstrek and loves it!
Nice!
I think the interior in the Crosstrek looks better.
They did do a lot to improve the cabin this year so that’s great to see 👍
I’m highly considering both vehicles. And im very excited😊
Crosstrek hands down. You didn’t mention that the new Crosstrek hasn’t been tested yet by IIHS but the previous model was top safety pick plus. Also, the HRV don’t have any USB or center armrest for the rear seat! How can you screw that up in 2023?!
Post price paid for a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek premium (before fee if possible)
Make a hybrid hrv and we'll revisit :)
That’s how I’m feelin
They make the HR-V in other countries (ZR-V) in a hybrid it's just not in the states. I just bought an HR-V and I didn't consider Subaru, after owning a '12 WRX there's alot of build quality issues, I liken subaru to Hyundai. One thing I value is interior road noise. I've opted for the EX-L and at 3k miles I'm getting 31mpg average and my commute is about 12mi's so it's not all highway, I think it actually gets better in the city.
So frustrating that we're waiting for Civic and HR-V hybrids in USA. Both have been available for so long in Europe and Aus. Would have been very interested in those vehicles, and getting impatient!
I had a Crosstrek nearly 2 months now.I can say Crosstrek better than Honda HRV.
All I know is when I want to go offroading..........,
Actually I don't care about offroading & by extension don't need awd cars ever.
Same here!
Does the HRV have wide track tires like the CR-V?? Hate them!! They are too expensive and the CR-V eats up tires!! CRV's are so hard on tires!! The Subaru is also easier on the knees!! The bumps don't hurt like they do in a CR-V!! I will see how the winter handling is but with the CR-V the redesign lost all winter handling!! After a new CR-V I wouldn't even consider an HR-V. The old CR -V drove like a lumber wagon but it got you through the snow!! If they ever bring back the Element I might consider a Honda again. I've had an Accord and x2 CR-V's. I also hate having the screen up on the dash!! Good thing I switched to a Subaru Crosstrek!!
i think subaru is more comfortable because the rear suspension is multilink
2024 Subaru crosstrek has Hybrid version.
HR-V has multi-port fuel injection, thus no gunk-up like direct-injection found on CrossTrek. Subaru CrossTrek has the superior always on AWD system, good seating, great safety., and more. The 2.5 engine has a relatively new and complicated TCV -- could have failures down the road, though all cars have possible points of failure, The HR-V is half second slow in 0-60. The CrossTrek is a safe car - look at Death Rates in Cars and Insurance Loss Claims data. Subaru for the win? The HR-V is redesigned, thus too early to tell as to real-world safety, though if you are a crash dummy, the new HR-V will treat you kind --- maybe good for humans too. I think the look, inside and out and that multi-port injection catch my attention. Long lasting? Could be!
I already have a 2018 Crosstrek Limited. It does what it is supposed to do and it does it very well. I would actually take the Honda in this case. The interior is just that much nicer.
I like the feeling of a boxer
Agreed. More "assuring" drive.....
HR-V seats hard and thinly padded. Go CrossTrek Premium with base engine, good seats, AWD all the time. Subaru safety!
Honda everyday, Subaru is OK if you are happy with burning lots of oil between services.
Subaru ❤❤
US HRV design is ugly as hell !
Which one has spare tire?
The Crosstrek has one.
Hr-v has one too
It’s a dog bowl not a cup holder 🥲
I got it right in the Crosstrek wilderness video this year 😅
Thanks for your opinions. Lol
Tested them both. I bought the Subaru!
Congrats!
@@dwnshft Thank you ! Great video. The Honda is too low to the ground for an SUV
Both cars have CVTs, dependability is important, CVTs are junk. Fan boys will say that CVTs last as long as regular automatic (they don't), they won't mention they cost double to fix. Do not drink the CVT kool-aid .
Now drive my second vehicle with a cvt. Never had a problem and I like the smooth performance. To each their own.
CVTs have come a long way. There are plenty out there with over 200k miles even shitty ones like from Nissan. CVTs are probably more sensitive to lack of maintenance though.
@@turo3066 After looking at Auto trader it seems that new Crosstreks are available with standard trannies, who knew?
Overall CVT failure rate is higher that conventional automatics. They cost twice as much to repair. No reason to own a CVT.@@turo3066
@@turo3066yes this exactly. You absolutely NEED to change the trans fluid at least every 20k miles. And I wouldn’t keep a cvt over 125k miles just to be safe. At 125k miles most cvt’s will start shifting harder or slipping and then it’ll be much harder to resell or trade in
I am impressed with the Cross Trek numbers. My only question is, why do they make them to ugly. This cross over has everything to Excell the HRV, however, it looks to outdated. I wouldn't drive one.
Honda
Both of these vehicles have CVT transmissions that are not up to the task. And what is worse, Honda can’t even fix them. I know this from first hand experience, The CVT in my HRV went out at 23,000 miles, and it took the dealership 6 months to fix it. Total garbage, do yourself a favor, get a Toyota.
The corolla cross has a cvt also. :-(
@@OsBMXandHotrodsAt least Toyota knows how to build a CVT, but I still don't want one.
I am 1000% not kidding when I say you couldn’t pay me to own a Subaru. If Subaru contacted me and offered me a car. I am not kidding when I say I would turn it down.

The HRV looks way better. The Subaru is ugly.
