Boy, what I wouldn't give for that hidden setting that permanently disables the auto-start-stop "feature" of my Outback.
It drove me nuts too on my wife's 22 Forester and the only fix is that they sell some gizmo (autostop eliminator is the one I found) which is a $100 plug in module that allows it to be permanently turned off.
@@johnbeardslee3811 yeah, I saw that gizmo online too. That’s a decision of last resort, although I’ll probably wind up getting it.
I agree, we need the auto-start disabled.
@@johnbeardslee3811 I installed one of these (the $100 one before I found out there's one out there for $25) a couple weeks after I took delivery of my 22 Forester Touring. Works great and doesn't interfere with anything in the car. Fits underneath the driver's seat. By the way I got the $25 one and installed it in our 23 Crosstrek (it mounts where the fuses are left side under the dash and it works great as well.
It’s called an auto start stop eliminator. I installed one over the weekend.
Something I learned in my 2024 Forester Wilderness is, if I have both the lane assist on and the cruise control on and I pass a vehicle, when you tap the turn signal stock/lever they will disengage. I pass that vehicle(s) then tap the turn signal stock again and go back into the right hand lane, both the lane assist and cruise control automatically re-engauge. .
I'm so glad I watched this. The one touch lane change setting was something that had frustrated me through the two years of owning my Outback. Thank you so much. I did know about the roof racks, though. Great vids.
These videos are great! I watched a couple of them before I went to the dealer to shop for my 2024 Crosstrek and the salesman didn't know some of the features I learned! I'm really enjoying the car and chatting with other Subaru owners in parking lots about fun things we've learned from watching these videos and others like them.
Alex,
Another THANK YOU!!, to you for helping Subaru owners.
After watching this video I was doing maintenance on our ex '16 Legacy we gave to our daughter.
I started looking in the settings and found I could leave notes to record date and mileage.
After we had the car for six years and never knew.
Thanks again!
The roof system is one of the major considerations I had to choose Outback over forester. Thanks Alex
I have a 2018 Outback and yes I did know about the roof rack. I think it should be on all the Subis. Very convenient. Thanks for all the tips 🙂
Great videos! I just purchased a Subaru Forester Premium with the Blind Spot/Rear Cross Traffic/Power Life Gate option!
Knew about the crossbars. I either discovered it myself or the dealership mentioned it during delivery / orientation.
I did not know about the fog light switch! I thought they went on or off depending on the headlight selection. This may be useful!
The felt "napkins" were news also. The driver's side was folded down - not anymore now, and the passenger side was up. In looking at them to figure what I might have previously thought they were, I discovered a long, lost keyring I had concluded was lost on a hiking trail! Thanks, Alex! 😄
Finally, with standard cruise control, it seems to me you have to press the CC button on the right and then the press-and-hold distance switch.
Thanks again!
Very informative, could see the screen and you explained everything very well and it was easy to follow you.
These are awesome. I just used the auto hi beam feature earlier this evening. It's very effective.
Awesome info 😊 did not know about the crossbars on my outback ... Thanks!
We have had our 2024 Outback for exactly one week...absolutely loving these tips! Thank You!
Great choice. Enjoy! 😎
Thank you Alex! Had our Outback for 3 years and did not know about the blinker or the crossbar.
Thanks for the information. I look forward to your videos. They are truly helpful.
Great tips as usual Alex!
Thanks for all the tips, Alex! Love your videos. 🙂
I love this crossbar setup. The blinker setting is good. Rented a Chevy a few years ago with this and found it to be handy.
Keep the tips coming. Very helpful.
this is exactly what i was looking for. massive thank you 🙏👏
Thanks for another informative video. Keep the tips coming. I started watching your videos before I purchased my Outback. I already felt like an expert when my car arrived.
Happy to help!
I’m saving all your videos in a folder because the lease return will be during the end of December. At that time a Forester sport or wilderness will be bought within limited miles (less then 30,000).It will be the perfect/reliable vehicle for the upcoming x country drives ( with dog)across Canada ( west coast to east coast) for the hiking/backpacking/ camping. Using it solely for that purpose of 12 weeks max of cruising. Your videos are incredibly helpful to be up to date on the options/settings/hidden features and your videos are probably more informative that the salesperson. Will spend a couple of easy days “ fine tuning “ all the options and be ready to hit the road. Thank you and please keep posting..
Glad to hear you've found my videos helpful!
Had no idea about the roof bars on my 2024 Outback... love the tips you provide !! THANKS !!
Yes, that’s cool to know though 😊
I bet you probably also didn't know that there's space under the load floor to stow the cargo shade...
bought a 2016 outback new... the roof rack system was a major consideration. The decision to get rid of the tie down points and go with the "open" slopes of the rails on later models was a huge step backwards for those of us who actually USE the rack system! Constantly rooftopping large SOT fishing kayaks, the rack system on my Outback is close to perfect.
I did not know about the crossbar system on my Outback! It's so good to know!
You show clearly where to find the light settings. Thank you.
I love your videos. Every time I learn something new.
Would you PLEASE provide a part number for the Subaru Forester Wilderness Aero Bars? Thank you!👍
Thanks for these vids!
thanks Alex for the hidden settings 👍
Another good video Alex. Have had my new Subaru(Crosstrek) a bit now so I knew most of that. Just curious are you one of the top salespersons at your dealership?
Thank you Alex, this was helpful informaton for my new 2023 WRX 👍 Au
I didn't know about the roof crossbar system on my Outback, it's brilliant - Thank you Alex
Unless you get the Wilderness... The roof rail system is different on that trim.
Yeah, I ended up getting the wilderness and I’ll probably have to buy the crossbars for my wife because for some reason she thinks she needs them
Only tip I didn't know was turning off adaptive cruise control. Very helpful, Thanks!
Hi Alex. I have a 2024 Crosstrek Sport. Love your channel. Is there a special windshield washer fluid recommendation for our cars?
Great tutorial!
Been driving Subaru Outbacks for over 12 years. Had no idea about the roof crossbar system. Thanks!
I see this comment often. It just boggles my mind,. I mean, it''s been a big selling point of the OB's for long long long time now.
No, I didn't know about the roof rack. Thank you for all your tips very helpful.
You're welcome! 😊
I've enjoyed the high beam assist. Leave them on and it's auto response is great. Subaru forester '23
The crossbar feature is amazing! I use it when camping and bringing a roof box.
Thanks again, especially for that cross bar system --- I just spent many $$ for a Yakima rack system.
I had no idea about the crossbars! Since they interfere with clearing snow off the roof, I think I'm going to swing them out of the way.
I also didn't know about the auto lane change assist feature for the turn signals. I do have one gripe about the turn signals, it seems I have to make a much wider turn to get the signals to shut off than in any car I've owned before. Now that's an adjustment I'd like to have!
I use adaptive cruise all the time and had no idea I could switch to normal cruise without going into the settings panel. I've had tha adptive cruise shut down a few times in heavy rain at night because the cameras couldn't see well enough. It would be nice to be able to shift to normal cruise until the rain lets up, so now I can.
Thanks for this video!
Thanks for these videos, Alex. Picked up my Outback Onyx Edition 2 weeks ago. I finally got the garage cleaned out yesterday to accommodate the Outback's extra length, 16 feet compared to my Crosstrek.
Congrats on the Onyx! I have the same trim and love it
Hi Alex, I have a question. In the cargo area on the left and right panels is a rectangle device that pivots down when pressed. It is located to the rear of the back seat release levers. I don't think it has anything to do with the cargo net. Videos for that don't mention what I'm describing.
Thanks 😊
I did know about the roof rack. Tony demonstrated it to me when he sold me the Outback. I thought that all the models that came standard with roof racks used that design, so that part was new to me.
Alex, is there a way to raise or lower the temperature setting without actually turning on the fan system. Sometimes the air that just naturally blows through the vents will be hotter or colder than I'd like and I just want to warm it up or cool it down and turning on the fan first means I have to blast myself with a BIG hit of the air that I already find uncomfortable, and it takes two steps and more distraction while I'm trying to drive. Just touching the up /down keys doesn't seem to work if the fan isn't running.
Thanks for your help and the videos.
Hi Alex , love your videos. Does the 2023 outback touring xt have auto rain sensor's?
Love your videos. My best advice for Subaru owners is to take the owners' manuals out of the plastic OR watch this man's content. Appreciate you!
Thank you!
If you really want to learn about your Subaru model, go to the forum for it. Tons of information.
I love this gentleman’s videos. Very informative and helpful.
I downloaded the manuals for my 24 Forester on my laptop and search everything on the pdf file. So easy.
No I didn’t know that the cross bars worked the way on my 17 Outback
Thanks for the info
Alex, I have a 2023 Forester Touring and my wipers auto turn the lights on if the wipers continuously. It's great.
Alex, I personally do not like the fixed cross bars, I have a 2023 Ascent and I have removed the cross bars. Thanks for all your videos.
I appreciated the tip about unlocking all doors when unlocking the driver door. I have a 2019 Forester and I have it for 5 years now and never knew this feature of unlocking all 4 doors at the same time. I don't know what the felt material does between the driver (or passenger) seats and the center console. My seats never move once set so that may not be the reason for the felt material. I like the one touch lane charger feature when the signals stays on 3 times. I wish the vehicle had a rain sensing feature when the wipers come on automatically when it starts to rain and increasing its speed accordingly when the rain starts to fall heavily. My 2003 Mazda 3 has this feature so it shouldn't be difficult for Subaru to have it on their cars.
Hi Alex. Love your videos. I live in Ontario Canada which has a Daytime headlight law. This means that headlights are always on. Unfortunately the law does not include tail lights. The reason this is a concern is that with headlights in the Auto position, there are no tail lights which is not good in foggy conditions. It is for this reason that I forego all the features of Auto and leave it in the full headlight position. I have asked a couple different dealerships if I can incorperate my tail lights into Auto and have had no success.
Cheers
Keep up the great work
Those crossbars are one of the cool engineering features I love about my Outback. I could see a group of engineers having a discussion about how they could mount a roof bar accessory, and one of them just says, "Why don't we just build them in and make them swivel? Wouldn't that be cool?"
Less cool - the inability to disable the key fob control of the power lift gate. I had my dealership do this for me, and even though it likely took five minutes with the code scanner, I got charged a couple hundred dollars. It was worth it to not have my power tailgate open because I was in the house and changed position on the sofa (true story), but why couldn't this be a function in the Settings menu?
Hey Alex, I’m probably missing something here, but I thought I heard you say you couldn’t find “wiper link” on the forester, but I saw it when you were in the “auto light sensor” setting. Wiper link was at the bottom when you clicked on auto light sensor. It is on my ‘23 Forester Wilderness in the same place. I might be mis-understanding though😅
Loved the hidden cross bars on my last Outback. Wish Subaru would make them an option on Crosstrek and Forester.
Alex, your videos are great and I’ve learned so much from them! But I have to say that I think the one touch lane changer is dangerous. I’ve seen people turn their blinker light on just as they were moving over and it gives no one that’s behind or beside them time to react. Just when you’re moving over is not the time to turn on your blinker light. Your blinker light should be on well before you start changing lanes.
While this is true you also shouldn’t be beginning a lane change in a scenario where that actually factors in. If the guy behind you is flying up, wait to change lanes
Great video Alex. I did not know about the crossbars on my 2024 Outback Touring XT. I do have a question that I hope you can answer - my Outback has ventilated front seats and it seems that there is an extremely uncomfortable duct or fan under the seat cushion that makes the front seats so uncomfortable that I have purchased seat cushions to provide some relief. Is this normal? It’s pretty disappointing that the top of the line Outback has front seats that are unbearable without using an after market seat cushion. Maybe there is a secret adjustment that I’m not aware of?
Alex, do appreciate your videos (recently obtained a 2020 OBL; Subaru #4).
But I am curious, if these are fairly popular features why are they hidden? Why doesn't SoA include a brief "Hey look at this cool stuff" brochure in the documentation?
Have to say, moving up from a 2013 OBL, I was excited by the tech upgrades in the 2020, but finding out the infotainment system has a 250+ page manual was more than a little daunting.
I'm bummed. I bought a '23 Forester Ltd in December. My sister & brother in law have the Outback. I was able to get a preview on a lot of the their features (since I had my previous car for 16 yrs - I have a lot to learn!! 🤭). I am getting ready to move from FL to MN, and I am only taking what fits in my car (downsizing to a 1 bedroom apartment). I did not realize the Forester doesn't come with the same roof rail system! I was already unsure about spending the money on the cargo carrier, so to have to add the rails for another $249 is a bummer. My own fault, I shouldn't have assumed! Thanks so much for your videos! I will need to watch some more before I make my trip!! Hitting the like button!👍
After having multiple different crossbars/roof rack setups in the past, I think the aero crossbars are well worth the extra cost. Another way to look at it is that the equivalent Outback limited has a higher price point. So although the Forester doesn’t have the built in crossbars, you make up for it with the lower price on the Forester!
@@alexpmo I agree with you 💯% !!! It was just unexpected, and my own fault. I totally would do it if I would use the set up on several occasions, or had several passengers and needed the extra cargo space. Who knows....maybe I'll pick up kayaking after I move!! I'll have lakes all over the place to check out!! 👍 Thanks for your input - it's appreciated!
Did not know about the roof rack. Thanks so much for all the info!
New to the channel...appreciate the info. I don't think our 2012 Outback had the same crossbars, so probably just before they implemented those. Replaced it in 2016 with a crosstrek. Other car is a 2019 STI. I think we Subaru too much, ha!
Headlights mandatory when wipers needed in my state. Wiper Link is good.
Any tips and tricks for a 2024 Legacy Sport? Just picked one up over the weekend.
I think that extra felt is to keep coins or other hard objects from falling into the track of the power seats and jamming up the slides and causing damage to the motors
When you mentioned directionals, it reminded me of an annoying thing on the Outback, compared to every other vehicle I've owned. With the Outback, when the directional is on, you need to turn your wheel further than any other car I've driven before. It will automatically click and pop off. So a lot of the turns I take are bare right. This means that I'm usually manually turning those off and sometimes forget to turn them off and it's an annoyance. It's something I got to get used to I suppose.
With the fixed crossbars, I assume you don’t have the option to go wider? I put slightly wider, heavier duty Thule Wingbar crossbars on my 2018 Outback to accommodate a cargo box and slim solar panel. I can also take the bars completely off if I want and just have a small rail channel. Maybe there is a workaround with this newer system? Asking for a future upgrade.
I did not know that about the Outback cross bars. One topic that I would like to hear about..... I was told that to use a commercial car wash that you have to turn off was it Eyesite? Thanks
Wiper link is on the Forester. If you go into Auto Light Sensor there is a toggle to turn wiper kink on or off.
lol, it was right on the screen as he was saying it wasn't there!
About to take delivery of my 2024 Outback Wilderness. Does it have the roof rack cross bars as well?
I been waiting for you to address accessory mode. I had my 30 day check in with Subaru last week and this was one of my questions; "why can' I roll down my windows in accessory mode? answer: you can't , it's a Subaru "safety" feature. Not a deal breaker but a bummer.
Alex, your videos are great!❤
Thank you!
Alex, when you were showing the Forester part of the headlight sensitivity and wiper link, you said you could not find the wiper link on the Forester. It looked like it was right below the sensitivity setting. I could be wrong, but I watched that part twice and it looked like it was there.
Could you explain and demonstrate the Subaru monitor up dats?
hi do you know how to adjust the sound level on the alert for speed camers/red light cameras ? thanks from Australia
I have a 2019 Outback Limited-- the second up model. Can you post tips that apply to the2019 model.
Question unrelated to your video. Is there any scenario/setting that makes the headlights stay on for a set time upon exiting the car? Thx.
On my 2019 Forester the headlights came on when the wipers were on and I had the lights on automatic 9didn't notice if there were any settings for it). And yes, I did know about the crossbars on the Outback.
Can you set the cruise control to adjust in one mph increments rather than the default five mph increments. I was thrilled to find that one mph increments are possible by bringing the toggle to the top or bottom of of its range of motion. Also, is it possible to lock your keys inside with just one fob and use the entry code under the tailgate?
Alex - have they improved the 2025 Forester Infotainment System? Others have slow response time and lag, thank you.
Hi Alex. Please tell me, I have a 2022 Subaru forester sk, premium. Is there a driver monitoring system in this version?
I have a 2021 basic model Forester, which you have to use a key. Can you show how to do the different settings for a person that has a key system and not a keyless.
My '22 Foster will turn on the headlights if the Eye Sight sees them go by frequently. Not sure if there's a setting to disable it, but I like it. I wish the quick blinker would flash 5 times instead of 3
I want a video about if there is a way to open all doors on 2024 Crosstrek Sport & be able to play the radio or Bluetooth in the car?
On my 2019 Ascent Premium, the auto-high beam sensor turns off the high beams if there is adequate ambient lighting in the area.
Searching through your videos and I haven't found the answer yet. We have a 2024 Forester Touring. Is there a way to set the audio profile to match up with the driver profile? My wife and I each have an audio profile set but the system will seem to randomly change to the other profile every so often.
I wish the OB Wilderness had the built in cross bar system. I know the capacity is lower, but they could offer an option with pylons that lock in to those holes to attach stronger cross bars if needed.
Just traded in my Legacy Limited XT on a 2024 Forester Limited. I wanted to get a '24 before they all sold out. I knew that I didn't want another Subaru with the 11" full display after having it for 3 years with my Legacy. I also got a great deal as the model changes are coming soon. I just wish is was possible to get Subaru's with a Roof Rail delete option and to get a Limited without a moon roof.
Glad you were able to secure one!
Is there a way to view the backup camera as your driving down the road? ie…to check bikes or something you are towing?
You should have mentioned the rear cross bar on the outback can be moved further back by unscrewing it with the included tool. It’s perfect if you’re carrying long items like sea kayaks.
You didn't discuss the options that are available from the steering column where you can change what displays on the dash. Yes I knew about the crossbars on my outback.
I need to find out how to disable the warning chimes when I have a long load and I can't close the hatch. I saw a couple of videos about flipping the latch over but I have never been able to get this to work... it should be simple... but I can't get it to work or find a method to silence the alarm
Thanks, Alex. I don't know why Subaru just doesn't install a similar built-in cross bar on the Forester like they do for the Outback. Seems like a silly decision not to.
Is there a way to disable the auto dimming high beams? They have a tendency to dim when reflected off a white street signs like speed limit signs. Not good on dark winding roads!
Good video.
But worth mentioning you can't switch between adaptive cruise and regular cruise while cruise is actually set. At least not on my Canadian version of the 2024 Outback Wilderness.
Cruise has to be in the "READY" position, not set/engaged.
I can change mine on the fly on my 23 outback us version, toggle on the steering wheel
Do you know when we can start ordering the 2025 Outback. Will, there be changes.
I have a question about the GPS on my 2024 Outback. Is there a way to make it NOT tell me to stay on the freeway when there's an upcoming off ramp? I'll be on a 3 lane freeway and there's an off ramp to a country road. If there's the slightest bend in the freeway the GPS will tell me to "keep left". Duh, I'm on the freeway. It's supposed to tell me when I need to get off. My Garmin, Google maps, and my old Jeep doesn't tell me to NOT get off the freeway. Is there a way to tweak that feature off? Thanks for the videos. I just ran across you and I am using several new things.
On my Outback when I hit the up or down button for speed adjustment on cruise control it jumps up 5 mph click is there a way to change that to only one mile per hour like it does on my Forester
Is it possible to disable the horn chirp when using remote start on a '23 crosstrek?
I am a ham radio operator where is the best place if I wanted to put a magnet mount Antenna on my forester ?
@alexpmo Yes! love that built-in crossbar feature on my 2020 Outback! Question because I trust you more than my local dealership: what is the current software version for the Infotainment screen for my 2020 Outback Premium? Thanks so much!!
It makes things way easier! Here's the latest TSB: 15-305-22R that I'm aware of.
@@alexpmo Thanks very much!! do you know what my infotainment screen will show if it's up to date? Mine currently says "Software Version F11GMM042-380". I know it's not current, but everytime I'm in for service and ask them to run the update they tell me I have the most current version.
My driver door only is set on my 2023 outback. If I’m on driver side and someone is on the passenger side it will open all doors even when set only to driver. Any thoughts? My dealer can’t figure out why. FYI my 2020 crosstrek did not do this.
What’s cruise control? Is that for it to go a certain speed on its own? Does it mean it stays in lane alone? I’m lost
