  • Cheza and Hubb successfully perform CPR on the wounded Quent, who has gone into shock from internal bleeding. Hige mentions that only Quent's intense hatred of wolves has kept him motivated to live up to this moment. After Quent's condition stabilizes, Blue entrusts her master to Toboe in case something happens to her. The car breaks down, and the companions continue the journey on foot. When Quent awakens, unable to put aside his hatred of the wolves he tells Blue "You're not my dog anymore" and staggers away. Blue, shattered, embraces Hige and says "If I can be with you when the world ends, it'll be enough for me", and the two of them leave the pack. It is revealed from Quent's flashbacks that Darcia was one of the wolves hiding in Kyrios when it was destroyed by Lady Jaguara's forces, and Darcia himself appears before Quent and Toboe (after destroying what remains of Jaguara's keep with the weapons of his airship). After Darcia declares them unfit to enter Paradise, Darcia and Quent open fire on each other, but Toboe leaps into the line of fire

I feel like they could've convinced Quent to team up for a better chance against Darcia together if he knew exactly who the "bad guy/wolf" was earlier matching his memory, but then I guess that would inject some hope for humanity's existence and we can't be having that so close to the end.

Yeah I guess he just had to have some last minute ptsd. I thought he would have believed what Blue said and switched sides about it.

This episode, in particular, is a punch to the gut. Firstly, there's Pops pushing Blue away. I think it's obvious he did it in an attempt to 'free' Blue from him. At this point, he has no reason or will to live and thinks Blue should go on without him to live her own life. His denouncement of her was his way of letting her go, though of course he had to do it harshly. And of course, poor Toboe. Quent was trying to shoot Darcia, and I believe at this point in the story he never would've shot Toboe on purpose. But of course, brave and sweet Toboe tried to protect him by jumping in front and got shot by Quent who was a quicker draw than Darcia.
In these last few episodes the show does a really good job of making you feel just as lost as the characters, feeling like there's very little left for us to hold on to and what little we do have is quickly disappearing between our fingers. It's a hard pill to swallow, that sense of hopelessness and despair, and a large reason why (i suspect at least) many don't like the show. Most people don't like watching as the group/world they've come to know fall apart. Most people like happy endings, which is entirely fair, but this show isn't so simple or idealistic. It's brutal and unfair, just like real life. And it only gets worse from here (as I assume you know, if you've finished the show by now).

I had a feeling Pops was doing that, but he really sold it lol. I think I still had hope at the end of this episode because it ended on a cliffhanger. It got worse for me next episode. Some shows can be real downers when they try to have brutal endings, but there is an art to the way that Wolf's Rain does it. Maybe its the hope our characters continue to have until the bitter end. That regardless of how screwed they think they are, they still push forward to see how it all ends.

@@RoninMann That was really well put, and I definitely agree. Lots of shows try for a brutal or edgy ending just to be brutal or edgy, but Wolf's Rain isn't like that. Yes it is brutal, but you were right in that there's still a sense of hope and determination to reach the end. Everyone keeps pushing through all the bad things happening around them rather than wallowing in those tragedies. That hope for paradise keeps pushing them forward. Such perseverance can be seen particularly in Kiba, the wolf who's never even once considered giving up the search for paradise, no matter how bad it got. It has been his single driving motivation for the entire series and such determination has motivated everyone around him. Even tough-guy Tsume grew to admire Kiba's resolve (though he'd never admit it aloud) and grew to share it just as all the pack members did, and eventually the humans too.
