As the final battle begins, Darcia quickly gains the upper hand over Kiba, and tries to secure Cheza, but Blue intercepts him at the cost of her own life. Having mortally wounded Blue, Darcia snatches up Cheza in his jaws and attempts to reach the summit of the First Mountain, with Kiba in hot pursuit.

Great reaction. The last 4 OVAs made me love this show even more. A stunning piece of art that deserves more attention.
The last 4 OVAs are BONKERS! Makes you feel feelings you never knew you had and beats you into submission.
The first time I watched this, all those years ago, it destroyed me. Such a heartbreaking yet beautiful show. The OVAs broke me. I couldn't stop crying.
Violet Evergraden will give you some gut punches too. Good choice to fill follow Wolf's Rain. It's a beautifully stunning show. Yes the art is gorgeous but the emotions you will feel while watching it will just blow you away.
Love the name! Love the Fate series.

This last episode brought it all back full circle. In the first episode, we get the same shot of Kiba laying in the snow, wondering why he's so driven to find something that may not exist. It's all a circular loop, always repeating and them all meeting again. But what really gets me is the music in this episode. When the plants start growing, flowers blooming, the music swelling, it's a sort of release after all the suffering we've been through. And yeah, I agree with your thought that paradise is the world reborn. A new, fresh start; a future. That's paradise. It's a strong message to send, that the future is paradise, especially to those who have no hope for the future.
I'm so glad I got to watch you react to this awesome and underrated series. I'm excited for you to start Violet Evergarden!
I really feel like I'm going to have to do a re-watch of this series to see what clicks for me. Oh yes the music is soooo amazing. That's an interesting point you make about the release after all the suffering. Once the book was being filled out and the music kicked in, I no longer felt all the despair that was building up to that point. It's definitely jumped into my list of favorite anime of all time. It's a devastatingly beautiful show that does tragedy right. The OSTs are in regular rotation in my playlists.
We start a new journey next week with Violet Evergarden and I hope you enjoy it!
I find it there's a connection between what wolves do in their lives and how they die.
Kiba always has heaven in his mind and nothing else, in the end he finds that having a pack of friends is quite important, but loses them all, and dies alone.
Tsume has betrayed his original pack, and then, has to kill one of his friends with his own fangs before he dies.
Toboe has killed the old lady in what can be called an accident, and is then killed by an accidental bullet.
Even after the amount of times I watched this, still teared up when re-watching through the reaction. For nostalgic reasons, this is one of my favorite series of all time. Used to be my number one forever. It definitely ruined happy endings for me for a long time, lol. I never actually thought of your interpretation of the purpose of what they wolves had to do to open paradise. Taking Cheza there in order to save the world so that there would be a future for the next. And now they'll all have the opportunity to meet each other again.
I honestly feel they could've done a movie or something if they ever wanted to do a sequel to the story. Although, technically we got to watch it all through the opening credits for 20 something episodes.
I cried multiple times while I was editing the OVAs. Can't say I've ever cried while editing until now lol.
A movie would be so sick. Even a series of movies that did a re-telling with new animation would be great. Or like a live action adaptation with Yoko Kanno doing the music, but not be a Cowboy Bebop thing lol.
Thank you so much for all of this! It's so nice to see that this show affected you so strongly. It's been in my life since I was a child and I seriously feel as though the story is a part of my soul. Everything about it is so beautiful and I have found it to be a source of healing/ comfort in many dark times of my life. I love that you felt so drawn to Tsume! He is one of my favorite character's of all time. To me he had some of the most powerful messages tied to his story and persona. I agree that he is truly the MVP ahahaha.
That's so great that this show has been there for you like that. Tsume is leather daddy for sure. He had to wear multiple hats in those last couple episodes. With each passing of each member, Tsume had to pick up the slack until it was his time. As someone who is a bit of a loner themselves, I connected with him the most.
@@RoninMann Leather daddy yesss 😭 Agreed, I’m the same same way. He’s just someone I instantly resonated with and it hasn’t changed after all these years. Comfort character for sure.

All the OVAs had me in tears
At long last... journey's end... I could talk to you for hours about this series (and if I ever get the chance, I'd love to)... probably stated this all before, but this is *my favorite* anime, and it *destroys me every time.* when I saw you start this, and you said you had no recollection, I went: oh no.... this poor guy has no idea what he's walking into...
The destruction is soo complete, I has become my benchmark for dramatic endings that stick with you. I firmly believe you will *never* forget this series. And when others tell me things like (when I went to see infinity war) "get ready for the red wedding" (a game of thrones reference)... I said we'll see... and even that didn't hold a candle to what happens in the last 4 episodes of this series. I have many stories of reactions from friends who have watched it as well...
I'll also note, if you re-watch the intro, they are shown still flipping between human and wolf forms... and even the readings from the book of the moon are as follows: "from the great spirit (presumably cheza) was born the wolf, and man became its messenger." Also noted in the series by darcia if I recollect is "paradise is a world where wolves reign supreme." I don't really think it can be argued that they're not wolves in lieu of this. If, and when you watch it again, you'll pick up all sorts of things a second time around.

Tsume can be a misunderstood character, but luckily I relate to him on a couple different levels so I identified with him easily. It’s cool that other viewers had other favorites in the pack, but it hits different to vibe with other Tsume fans. I decided long ago that when I’m ready to own another cat, they shall be named Tsume.
I really love this anime and darcia did mentioned he had the hidden wolf within him.
I always loved that twist of Kiba being essentially a god/herald of reincarnation and that Paradise was him fulfilling that role rather then it being a place. Plus the book ending imagery of Kiba lying on the surface of the water, that opened the first episode and what he sinks into in here the ending. As the tribal shaman from episodes 19 and 20 said, the wolves were sent into the world by Mother Earth. And that is why Kiba has no parent and was created. His mother and father in the planet itself sending him forth to start the rebirth cycle. And that is why he sinks into the water at the end (and presumably what was happening to him in that starting scene in the 1st ep.); he is literally being returned to the womb of planet till he is needed again
And yeah this thought is also why I think that Kiba is still a wolf even in the new cycle. That and he was starting to run since I think he smelled the Lunar flowers. But again that is just my thoughts.
Love this anime, easily my favorite one and that is no small feat since a lot my other top favorite animes are heavy weight champions like Cowboy Bepop and the two Full Metal Alchemists series, just to name a few.
I like that the ending is a bit open ended. Everyone’s thoughts on what it’s translation is have subtle differences and all of them seem to fit the narrative. I could see Kiba still being a wolf and perhaps everyone else forgot that they were wolves.
Come to think of it, Blue didn’t know she was a wolf. At first, I just thought it was just cause she was a half-breed. Perhaps it’s possible that there’s an added layer of she forgot she was one.
A really great series to spark conversations after the fact. We’ve been having some neat discussions on Discord so far.

Wow that's another good one. I agree with the first paragraph. For the second, he could still be a wolf while the others aren't and he smelled those lunar flowers or they are all human now. The world still looks pretty well for the world to need Kiba again though

Wolf`s Rain marked me a lot and I loved seeing someone see it for the first time.
When you started this series I remember the reason mentioned was because no one has done it before. So I want to recommend it for the same reason!
Utawarerumono (2006) was a series that marked me through history and the world. It was made from a game and I thought it was a well-ignored series because nobody talked about it. I was surprised when sequels to both the game and the anime came out.

I finally folded and watched this video. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to this series again, it's such a bittersweet story. But I'm glad I did, thank you for taking us in this journey along with you! I really hope the cast all meets again in their new lives, as all along the intro was showing us their new lives as humans.

I caught this show by accident years ago and no idea anime was so amazing.....I was hooked after this.
yes the world was reborn but paradise as they envisioned did not, they will repeat this again. when the tainted eye of Darcia was in the water, it contaminated the "perfection" so evil was also reborn

Maybe I’m wrong but I always interpreted the ending as they made it to paradise. There’s a song where the lyrics go “we’ve found a kind of paradise” and i look at it as the brotherhood they have is their paradise. when they all meet again at the end, that’s it, paradise.
I would say thats a fair assumption. I've spoken to a number of people on my Discord and we all have different interpretations of what we think is going on.
I think I'm the only one that thinks that they all turned into people and most of them forgot they were wolves like Darcia did in the beginning. I only say that cause I can't imagine a wolf driving a motorcycle like Tsume was at the end haha. Since throughout the show, every time a wolf rides a vehicle its always as a passenger. Unless I forgot a scene.

I give the series a 8/10, it was close to being a 7.5 but these OVAs are a 9.5/10. This anime is so unique and amazing. I wonder why are aren't anymore good werewolf anime. Also I see in the comment section you finished Violet Evergarden. That anime made me cry almost each episode, same with first season of Re:Zero, my favourite anime.
I believe all of their paradise is what they dreamt about when they fell asleep on cheza. Tsume is my favorite character also my story is very relatable to tsume
