  • Do you struggle producing power in your smash?
    Well there might be a variety of issues going on but in this video we cover 2 areas we often see preventing players from hitting harder smashes.

    An interesting take on stretching for more range of motion, and therefore power! Usually, in the exercice world, both those concepts are opposed. I'll certainly try that!

      Thanks for the comment and analysis. So we understand that a lot of the research suggests that stretching prior to exercise has shown to reduce strength and power.
      What we are suggesting here is stretching for increased mobility. I.e if you could only pull a bow and arrow back half way vs pulling it back all the way.
      What you would also want to do if you did improve this mobility is couple it with power rotation exercises to help you rotate your body back quickly to get back to your ideal hitting point for a smash.

    much of what i see and hear said about smash these days seems part of a viral pandemic of wrong teaching, but i think you guys are right on the money re mechanics and offer good suggestions to prepare the body. especially valuable mechanical points are 1) giving your racket head the time and distance to generate velocity, and 2) isolating the hips from the upper body so that there are 2 stages of developing kinetic energy, a slightly slower and deeply muscular lower stage starting with the legs, and a higher much less muscular and explosively accelerating stage in the upper body
    i also agree if you try to describe too many elements of smash the lesson falls apart. smash in badminton is nothing less than a fine kinetic art, and truth is, no matter how good your coach you find the keys on your own

      It’s sometimes an area that can be made over complicated, there are obviously lots of contributing factors that add power but sometimes you need to work on the ones that provide the biggest percentage.

      As we mentioned in the video, we appreciate range of motion isn’t an exciting topic but a very under rated topic that can really aid in adding power to a smash.
      Most of the top badminton players aren’t built like bodybuilders, they do however have great technique, racket head speed and a consistent contact in the middle of the racket, these are the areas we feel players should be focusing on in generating more power in the smash.

    PLease explain pronation in a dedicated video
    and why in the professional bwf smashes slow motions the rackets gets fully turned in opposite direction but the shuttle goes straight is it because of pronation?

    • @TheBadmintonZoneHQ
      @TheBadmintonZoneHQ  Před měsícem

      Yes forearm pronation plays a part in being able to add power to the smash, this can also be the case when intercepting a shuttle at the net, particularly on the round the head side. We can look into this for sure in the future. Thanks for the comment, we hope you found the video useful.

    When smashing from the floor should the front leg come off the floor before the body rotation as you hop between one foot to the other?

    • @TheBadmintonZoneHQ
      @TheBadmintonZoneHQ  Před měsícem

      Pleased you enjoyed it! 😀
      We feel the front foot would stay more in contact with the floor, this means it’s easier for you to shift your bodyweight forward using the front foot as a base.

      @@TheBadmintonZoneHQ The men's doubles I watch always jump smash, but the women's doubles players I watch seem to bring their front foot up slightly *just before* to load weight onto the back leg before quickly shifting it forward for their smashes. And since my students are much less athletic and shorter I figured them learning how to smash from the floor would be better at this point. (They are only 13 years old). Is this faulty?

    • @TheBadmintonZoneHQ
      @TheBadmintonZoneHQ  Před měsícem

      @@zmollon yes we understand what you mean now, yes a weight transfer from back leg to front leg is also great for adding power.
      It’s never a bad idea to break things down for younger students, working on power on the floor will make things easier for them to understand the dynamics. Then once happy you can start to add the jump.

    Does higher string tension give more power in smash?

    • @TheBadmintonZoneHQ
      @TheBadmintonZoneHQ  Před měsícem

      It’s mainly to give you more control but it also makes the sweet spot smaller. Pros tend to have their rackets strung tighter as they are able to fit the sweet spot consistently.

  • @gerryandrews5935

    Interesting that you don't say much about hips and legs? Much of our power is also generated by the rotation through our back, hips and from our legs and the combination of the total movement and the transfer of that kinetic energy into the shuttle. And how does this translate into if and how jumping adds power. Your thoughts, guys?

    • @oystershell6864

      Thanks for your comment! We decided we didn’t want to try and cover too many areas as not to over complicate it. So we chose a couple of key areas we see. You are right though, our legs and hips are so important in the transfer through the shot.
      When we speak about mobility of the torso I think this links in well because we want to create a small lag between our hips firing and our torso coming through, which will equal a larger energy transfer.

  • @epicnagger2216

    Eh I’ve heard either side of the coin for whether or not a jump adds power. My theory is that it does because you’re adding the gravity of your falling body into it as well. And the new Guinness record for fastest smash was a jump one if I recall correctly

    • @rb-ex
      @rb-ex Před měsícem +1

      the jump is an essential element of smash but it does not add power. it adds steepness and also earliness, both of which make defense more difficult. sometimes jumping allows you to intercept the shuttle before it has lost its energy, and this also enhances power. the gravitational effect you mention is theoretically present but its effect is negligible

      @@rb-exwell written response

    • @TheBadmintonZoneHQ
      @TheBadmintonZoneHQ  Před měsícem

      We would agree with the comment above. The jump is also a very important aspect of the smash as it adds angle to the shot which means the return has to be in an upward direction allowing you to hopefully stay on the attack easier.
      The mention of gravity is interesting but due to it being a force acting in a downwards direction and smash power needing forward motion we don’t think it adds anything to the shot.

      The grip was a forehand grip (handshake grip as you describe). The slow motion clip shows this at around 1.18 as you can see the forearm rotation needed to square the racket up which is needed with the forehand grip.
