Many youths are leaving Slovakia to study and work. Leaving makes sense as the average wage is less than 1000 euros a month. This "brain drain" is worrying for the future of Slovakia. In the past 15 years, over 300, 000 Slovaks have left.

Unemployment is very low here in Slovakia, because the old government reclassified some activities to actually count as jobs to make it lower. Also, Bratislava is a city where people go to work, that's also one of the reasons why it is so low there.

    • @dunno1128

That might be true, but your consumption power in Vienna is higher than Bratislava. In Bratislava, you might get a salary of 1000 euros net to (best case) for a normal job in office and your rent for a normal flat (2020 standards) in the city will cost you around 750 (sane price as Vienna by the way). Basically you are fu**ed if you are single, with no family and want to live alone in Bratislava. In Vienna, you might get a normal office job salary (starting from 1400-1500 euros netto) and be able to rent a place in the city for 750 euros as well.

My husband is black (from West Africa) and our children are brown. My husband doesn't want to go with us because he is afraid of racism in Slovakia. He would have to come alone by train because there is not enough space in my parents' car. I am also afraid now, for our children. Is it safe to go to Slovakia as a person of colour and do you have to expect negative reactions when you go there as a black person?

Roots of the problem are in the people's minds, demographic changes and huge regional differences. Big part of population believes that EU is hurting Slovakia and populist politians take that for advantage. But there is hope, we have a new government now and some changes are happening. Unfortunatley however is that the change of government happend right at the start of COVID crisis and many people blame the politicians for inadeqate action to help the economy.
