  • Niagara Falls - May 12, 2024
Niagara Falls is three waterfalls. On the American side are the American and Bridal Veil Falls; Horseshoe Falls occupies the Canadaian side. Horseshoe Falls is , by far, the more impressive waterfall probably accounting for about 90% of the volume of water that pours down. During peak tourist season on the order of 2,800 cubic meters per second of water pours over Niagara Falls. We spent our time on the Canadian side but it probably is worthwhile to visit both sides as you will get differnt vatage points to experience the majesty and power of Niagara Falls. On this visit we strolled along the promenade, went behind Horseshoe Falls, and got within a few hundred feet of the base of Horseshoe Falls to really feel the power of the waterfall.

@@wanderingkenknight I can recall back in 1972 you could walk up to the falls in the tunnel, even stick your hand out and feel the water rushing down. Last time I went in 2005 they put up a fence about 15-20 feet back to keep the public back from the falls.
In '72 they gave you a raincoat and rubber boots. That would keep you mostly dry but not 100% lol. After the tunnels we walked down to the terrace to see the side view of the falls and get a down river view.
We also watched the people aboard the Maid of the Mist boat get right close to the edge of the falls and they really got soaked! You got to see things up close on the terrace. I kept my camera in a plastic bag most of the time, taking it out briefly for a few quick pictures. We couldn't afford motels back then and had a tent trailer that we parked in a campsite behind a motel on Lundy's Lane. At least we had the use of the motel pool.
Great times back then, also had fantastic music all day long.

This is a great video. Shows all the interesting outlooks of the Falls, short and sweet and to the point. My grandparents vacationed there for their honeymoon in the 1920's. There weren't the big resorts of today. Just nature and you. There is the Marilyn Monroe movie that was filmed there. It was a very good movie thriller that really never got much attention. Can't remember the name, probably Niagra. IMDB it and rent it.

First visit was in the summer of 1969 while the US falls were turned off. Passageway to see the third view port was open, but not all the way as some cracks had appeared. The funicular to the boats was not there, as it was closed at last visit. We had to wear heavy black rubber rain coats and boots in 1969, and there were two change rooms to put on the rubber attire. No one got wet like they do with the cheap blue plastic ponchos.

By treaty there is a set amount of water each country can draw from the Niagara River. During the tourist season they draw off less water. From the mid Fall through early Spring they increase the water drawn. This exposes a portion of the river bed down from the falls... you can hike down some easy trails and walk on the exposed shelf.
Also, if you view the barge that is stuck just above the Horseshoe Falls you can use it as a marker and easily see the difference between the tourist season and winter water levels...

@@PanamaZarelto it's been stuck there over 100 years. When its 100th anniversary was coming up I emailed one of the local news outfits to ask if they knew if anything was going to be done for the anniversary of the barge? They had no idea that it had been there so long and though it would be cool to do something.
