Hey Sam I found the odd one out, it's the bachmann jubilee
Cheers Jasper & Willow
like they say it in monthy python and the holy grail, "camelot's a silly place"
I love that title. Imagine Hornby promoting it like that.
"Come buy our new N15! It's not faulty!" 😂
haha I know right, haha!!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This N15 locomotive from Hornby is very nice Sam and I do like that model. Buying the model for 212 pounds directly from Hornby is just stupid. If Hornby keep on jacking up their prices, they are going to go bankrupt at anytime .
It sure is nice Bryan!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Are Bachmann or other really any cheaper?
@@eisenbau Accurascale and Dapol are both very good at listening to customers and they price their products properly.
hornby is probably very close to bankrupt. china covid hasnt helped
I picked up one of the older N15s (R154 Sir Dinadan) a few months ago for £50 and it's a great little model. It's obviously not the most detailed model ever, but with that green livery, it looks absolutely lovely.
Hello Sam, the N 15 locomotive you have aquired is painted black because it is in its wartime livery.
Most locos on all regions were painted matt black so it was made difficult to bomb or strafe them from the air.
Even the Flying Scotsman 4472 had a matt black livery for wartime work hauling goods trains.
A few years ago i saw the Flying Scotsman in black livery on a special to Holyhead.
More recently when it was going back to holyhead it was Green again.
Thanks for sharing Ronald - must say the SR black is lovely!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Camelot!
Camelot!
Camelot!
It’s only a Hornby model
Shhhh! Model train enthusiasts, I bid you welcome to a bargain model. Let’s go and buy Camelot!
(Knights of the turntable song plays)
It's about time Hornby management were retooled. Perhaps put a logically thinking 5 pole brain in them. Preferably not skew wound as their pricing policy is already skewed which means we are screwed when buying their 5 star products.
haha that's an excellent idea - "Hornby - All New Tooling"
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Gotta love the King Arthur class. There was an experimental version of this engine, No. 783, which had three funnels to disperse smoke over itself to keep itself hidden during the war.
merlin from thomas & friends!
@@TheNoahLogan Yep. The very same.
I have Hornby's SR no. 751 "Etarre", and as soon as you mentioned yours made a noise I knew what you were about to say - mine has the same squeaky tender pickups too! Nevertheless it's one of my favourite locos - runs absolutely beautifully. Etarre looks great in the SR green, although your black one looks cool too.
Great to see Sir Dinadin.
It is always pleasant when a new purchase of a similar class performs better than your previous experience. Had that myself recently. Got the Hornby USA Tour Flying Scotsman (the 2013 one with the observation coach), and it performed better than my 2022 release A1 Doncaster. Funny, really.
I do really like the King Arthurs, hope to get one some day.
Very much so! And I've often found exactly the same - older relases of the same model often run better than new ones!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I have an older version, Sir Lamiel. which runs very well. Glad to see improvements have been made, particularly in putting the DCC decoder in the tender. I fitted a decoder to mine and it was a brute of a job as there is hardily any room in the boiler space, even with the smallest decoder I could find. Very good model you have there
Yes my older one runs extremely well too - always been good models! Thanks for sharing Ian,
Cheers,
Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I too love trains and I love viewing your videos to unbox trains and running them 😄😄😄🚂🚞🚉🚄🚅
I love ur vids Sam
Got the same model on the very same deal, they are very nice indeed. Just need Hornby to make more like this.
It sure is Robin - if all of Hornby's locos were at this standard, they'd be better off!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Awesome video Sam's trains
I’ve got this in an olive green finish. I love it it. One of my favourites. I’ve had some running issues but sorted them out and now it’s running great. There’s something about southern railway locomotives for me. My favourites are the n15 and the Battle of Britain class. Obviously the mallard and flying Scotsman running together hit different but the two southern boys do something for me too.
Yes I prefer the olive green too actually - and certainly is something about the SR locos!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam I can't wait to see you live tomorrow, I hope that I win one of your challenges tomorrow.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Hi Sam, The only thing they did with Sir Dinadan was in its last year of production was to go from a waxy plastic coloured body to a much better painted body. I think the Sir Dinadan production run was only 3 years. But as an engine it did lend itself to a huge amount of modification to make it look better. Also, it was the only engine to use the slip click tender connection. They had to do this as at the time it was the only engine to have a cab fallplate fitted as standard.
Hi Sam, This N15 was on my wish list a very long time but it kept its high price compared to the Maunsell S15 that I bought new for 89£ a few years ago.
I have 4 S15's and had to replace one motor send for free by Hornby. Can't complain of this service from them ! But all running excellent, equipped with the S15 TTS-sound. Very pleased. For less than 100£ the N15 would be a deal. Thanks for reviewing. Cheers, Filip
Thanks Filip - yes the price is very offputting - worth keeping an eye out for it being reduced! Glad to hear they sorted you out with the motor!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Awesome video today Sam beautiful modle I really wanna get one
I saw the southern 825 at the NYM railway in goathland the other day absolutely stunning locomotive in the flesh. Was renamed Rudolph for the Christmas Santa running times in the build up to Christmas
I have the Hornby N15 “Sir Valence” in SR olive, however I backdated mine to pre-1931 by removing the smoke deflectors and adding back the “E” letter prefix on the tender with some HMRS transfers. Fantastic runner and has no problem pulling five of the newer, heavy Hornby Pullman coaches (the ones with lights).
Close - but it’s not quite as simple as that if you want to get the true effect.
As part of the 1931 changes the red oval plates on the sides of the loco were altered and the red oval plate on the rear of the tender was removed in favour of painted numbers.
Also the fitting of smoke deflectors usually required the modification to the position of some of the lamp irons on the front of the loco.
Compare Hornbys R2843 Super detailed schools class to their Olive liveried King Arthur’s and you will see what I mean.
It's lovely sam, so glad you actually got a proper bargain from hornby, will be keeping my out for one at the right price, great review 👍
haha thanks Ciaran - I feel very glad too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Very nice. I've taken a liking to Southern region stuff recently, especially since i've moved into former LSWR territory. But I don't yet have a S15 or N15, or an olive green express loco (I have a schools in SR Malachite Green, and 2 M7s in olive green though). So I'm gonna try to get a N15 in olive green, for less than £100 at some point soon.
Wonderful. Great review and a fantastic loco for the money. Even at the RRP we can only dream about such prices for this size of a steamer here. A flywheel would have indeed been nice though. However, for the amount you have paid it is an absolute steal. Perhaps, if truly necessary, there seems to be room for a decent enough capacitor. Excellent!
Thanks Linda - yes for what I paid, this is certainly just the job!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Very nice Sam :) and I should be able to join your livestream tomorrow :)
Decent review there Sam looks like a great loco you have there, I get the s15 and n15 mixed up a few times, I have since been told that a good way to remember them is when you think of s15 think small due to the wheels and n15 think normal as the wheels are bigger.
The S15 was a Freight derivative of the 5P N15 4-6-0, hence the smaller wheels for greater Tractive Effort versus Speed.
Same with the LMSR Black 5 4-6-0 vs the 8f 2-8-0, or the LNER J39 0-6-0 vs the J37 0-6-0.
haha me too - they are very similar... and now I have an N15 in SR black, I bet I'll mix them up too! Got to look at the wheels!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Fun fact: King Arthur, numbered 453, was built in Feb 1925, while the first N15, 736 Excalibur, was built in Sept 1918?
@Sam’sTrains I frequently watch your 2-5 year videos nowadays, particularly the running sessions and T&F model loco reviews.
Thank you so much - glad you like watching them! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, Your N15 in plain black matt livery with Sunshine lettering is that way for a reason. It’s a WWII wartime livery. All locos of the Big Four were so rendered on the instruction of the War Office to prevent strafing by the Luftwaffe 🇩🇪. Brightly coloured locos would have really stood out against the British 🇬🇧 countryside. Post-war, Southern Railway passenger locos were repainted in Maunsel green with Sunshine lettering up until Nationalisation in 1947.
The massive tenders were actually to hold a lot of water, as the Southern was the only region without water troughs on the network - so would have to get all the way from Waterloo to the end of Cornwall on what they could carry,
OMG. A Hornby product that DIDN'T Cause Sam any Trouble, I must put that down in my Calender, As a Day to Remember..!
That little Blob of Glue was Annoying but Maybe Forgivable..!?
And a Flywheel in such a Large area wouldn't have been outa place.
But lets hope Every other Buyer has the Same Result.
And Hornby, may just have Redeemed themselves somewhat..!???
Maybe..!! Great Video Sam, nice to see you "Not Spitting Chips" for once..!
Cheers All, Kim in Oz. 😎
Excellent Review Sam this Locomotive seems like something I may Purchase.
Thank you! Glad to hear that - decent locos these! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
i have a King Arthur class myself Sir mador del a porte 785 and i purchased it when i was looking for a LBSC H2 Atlantic and i do love my N15.
Excellent review, Sam. Just don’t let it near your Gladstone…
(Hornby N15 sits in a siding, enjoying his business, when Sam’sTrains Gladstone speeds past with a passenger train)
Hornby N15: Heyo, get back here! You stole my wheels!!
Lmbo🤣🤣🤣
hahaha!! ;D
Forgot to say I also have the Hornby N15 Camelot and S15 "1638" both Bluebell Railway based and so far both running briliantly, fingers crossed!
Excellent! Yes same here - all good so far!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I think the driver and fireman figures from Hornby are quite good the plastic can be a bit glossy looking sometimes but once primed and painted they look excellent!
Yes it is - you're right, you'd definitely need some primer on there!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, I've had faulty motors on both the Hornby Raven and B12, both returned to Hornby for warranty repairs. It's a pity Hornby (possibly?) choose to install 'economy' motors, for the sake of a few pence, bearing in mind the prices! Keep up the good reviews Sam!
Yes it's very confusing that they don't use better quality motors - absolutely!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam, you got a diamond in a bucket or rocks there. You got lucky mate. A little EZlube which is a little weight lube for electric connections
There you go. Hornby can do it if they try. Why this is not continued in their other and later models goodness knows. As a southerner this is perfect. All the best Sam.
Selling a lot of stuff to Hattons now, saving to get a new Multiple Unit from Realtrack. Great video Sam, a Hornby model that isn't faulty is very surprising
Sounds great - good luck with the Realtrack :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NEW SAM YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH LOVE THIS GUY
I sent you a package in the mail last week, I'm not going to tell would what's in it, but it's going to be a big surprise
Hi Sam, Yes a very good review, and a fair price , (some one had a talk to Hornby??), All the best Brian 😃
Hi Sam. Yes it’s a good day when you get a Brilliant Hornby Model, not faulty and a decent runner. I think it’s a bargain at £114 , as the minimum price. I think it’s a good idea to give praise when it is due. And this is a wonderful model, @ £114 , but NOT @ £220, I would have given it a 3* for value, but quibble not. Good score. Good model. Great review.
Plain black is for me the most beautiful loco colour ...but hey as a Dane I'm schooled to love this
Camelot!
Camelot!
Camelot!
It's only a model.
I did notice a GWR loco in the siding by the buildings, I couldn’t tell what it was but I hope it’s enough to win me the competition
Hmmm timestamp?? Shouldn't have been a railcar there, haha!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I'm not even kidding, I just saw an intercity 125 pulling blue pullman coaches going past my house like I genuinely thought they were withdrawn from service but I guess not all of them were
I actually have a old triang N15 in BR green
Yeah I have that one too in Southern Olive as 795 Sir Dinadan, though I will admit the Tri-Ang N15 looks more like an S15 with the small wheels
Ya they look cool
I was going to watch this video, but the intro music made me want to watch a Woody Allen movie. Back soon!
Interesting,
i like that even hornby can once in a while pull together a decent loco, i wish the company valued its customers more at least to a point of taking good care of them but at least something nice can be said.
haha absolutely - this one's just spot on! Still a lot of work for Hornby to do!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
OMG! The loco crew pack must date from the mid 1970s, or VERY early 1980s,. A few steam locos in their range used to come with them,... And I have a N15 in the nice SR Green livery, runs really well, and looks great with a set of the matching coaches!
Oh yeah... they're old all right, but with some work I think they could look better than having no crew at all!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That's a nice model you got there
Those crew members were available as they weren't on strike 🚂
The N15 looks amazing!
It sure does! :D
I really do love the N15 I'll get one for sure
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Awesome - they are very good! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The 1976 train looks more shiny great review.
15:13 - These large tenders were mostly because the Southern Railway didn't use water troughs!
Sir Dinadan is the only N15 Hornby made with that tooling. They also only made them for just 2 years due to the model as a whole being very innacurate, as it reused the chassis from the Hall with it's much smaller wheels
I did wonder why I'd never seen any other loco - what a pity it was so short lived!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The 'Southern' branding on the tender is making me want to tear out my eyes - it's so high up.
I've got the same, and I had paid her around GBP150, can't remember exactly, I've bought her 2/3 years before after having a faulty S15 (I still have this one, waiting for a replacement motor).
Aesthetically, she does the job. Anyway, an extra brass etched plate with the name of the engine would have been a nice plus, especially for today's price. She is well manufactured, I can accept the all plastic manufacturing for the price I've paid her...
Drivetrain : does the job well, but lacks a flywheel. And a sprung contact baseplate would be a plus. If you put it with the performances, it's good overall for GBP 150 or less, you can accept the drawbacks at this price.
A nice loco, but not for an RRP over GBP 200, period. Else, Hornby puts down the price to a RRP of GBP150, or maintains the price and retool her with a die-cast footplate AND boiler, a flywheel on the motor, a PlusX22 or MDC 21 DCC socket, a sprung contact baseplate and an extra etched brass nameplate. If I would have to buy it now, she would be put on the "too expensive to be worth a buy as is unless bargained 30% minimum" list. AD Hattons priced her, it's acceptable for me.
Thanks for sharing Oliver - yes thankfully this is completely different from the S15, so no annoying faults!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Unpopular opinion, a black livery looks good on any engine.
Whilst I do prefer other liveries, I do agree
Ladies & gentlemen, we have discovered the most rare occurrence to ever happen. A bargain Hornby locomotive not being faulty!
Absolutely... it's a Christmas miracle!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ah, the Southern. Not to be confused with the _other_ Southern and their love affair with high-hooded diesels.
Hey Sam I’m a new subscriber to your channel. So informative! Any chance you could do a review on Australian trains? Specifically NSW? 😊
Thanks a lot Mick! Something Australian would definitely be awesome to cover - hopefully one day!

A fine member of the Knights of the Turntable! Will Camelot push the pram a lot? Bad Monty Python and Chris Eden Green references aside, thanks for this review Sam!
Did you know, there is a life hack to get significant discounts on Hornby’s website? If you add all pre orders to the basket and complete the checkout, you get some sort of gift voucher for a % off of your next order. Cancel all pre orders and the voucher still works. Discovered by accident while adding pre orders. Got a 25% voucher.
I read on another comment section to stay well away from the bargain hornby b12 and s15s due to the motor failing after half an hour just like your b12s did. So yeah still fitting faulty motors to the s15.
9:17 - Single.
You mention the front bogie on your other N15 coming off the track. Derailing Hornby bogies have driven me up the wall on occasions, and I have spent many hours working on them, to the point that I can now say that I am something of an expert on this unfortunate subject. The number one cause of bogie derailing (though not the only one) is that the two-bended bar that suspends the bogie from the front of the chassis is not adjusted properly. Sometimes this is very obvious, sometimes it is subtle. I had one Coronation class where the bogie was hardly touching the rails at all when the loco was railed up - the front bogie wheels were just on the rails, and the back bogie wheels lifted up off the rails entirely. So, of course, the bogie immediately derailed on the first curve. Often it is more subtle. But that bar needs to be bent so that the bogie sits comfortably down on the track, with equal pressure on the back and front wheels of the bogie. Of course, you don't want to push the bogie down so much that it lifts the driving wheels off the track. The fix requires removing the bogie and re-bending the two bends in the suspending bar, using two pairs of pliers. Trial and error can be required to get the right result. Hornby's factory in China don't seem at all capable of getting these adjustments right. There may also be problems with the gauging of the bogie wheels. And sometimes there are burrs on the metal of the suspension bar or the chassis that stop the bogie moving smoothly. I sometimes also resort to adding a bit of weight to the top of the bogie to keep it more firmly on the tracks. I've eventually managed to get all of the models with this problem to work without derailing - but it's pretty frustrating to spend hours working on quite expensive models just to get them to run without derailing. Oh, one more thing - the metal tyres on the plastic wheels of the newer Hornby bogies are prone to slipping partially off, so that has to be checked every time that you run a model that has that issue (unless you want to try to glue the tyres in place).
haha yeah! I don't have problems with many Hornby loco bogies, but I do remember that one being a pain for many years. And absolutely - I've often found that bar is bent/misadjusted - I've found the same thing many times myself!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I'm glad that Camelot turned out to be a good 'un - well Hornby's 'bargains' are a bit of a lottery
Was the odd one out the Jubilee? All locos on the layout were Southern 4-6-0s, except the Jubilee which is an LMS loco
Are Hornby doing something vaguely right for a change?
Hola buenas tardes muchas gracias por subir el modelo excelente video
I have the 1970s one as well, and no I don't recall Hornby ever making any others of the class. Sadly my 1970s one needs some TLC!
I bought one of these 6 months ago when Barrie Davis was singing its praises. I was not disappointed, I also got it at a very good price. As for the new price that is just Hornby profiteering, which they have done with models worse that this one. Every time I complain on the Hornby website I get the answer that they are good value for money, time will tell if it is a good idea by Hornby. Anyway good review, watching the valve gear move is also impressive.
I really like the tender on the n15, it’s a interesting style considering it’s a bogey tender
I do too - very nice to see something unusual!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hornby have released several versions of the N15 / King Arthur class with the 6 wheeled non bogie tender over the years. These include:-
R2582 No. 30803 Sir Harry Le Fise Lake
R2621 No. 30799 Sir Ironsides
R2724 No. 30800 Sir Mileaus de Lile
R1118 (Train Set) No. E797 Sir Blamor de Ganis
But apart from the last mentioned (which was only available in a train set with 3 1980s tooled pullmans) all the main releases with 6 wheeled tenders have come in BR livery.
In fact Hornby have been very bad at taking advantage of their N15 tooling, producing a string of identically liveried locos then wonder why sales are poor!
The N15s came with 3 tender types :- 6 wheeled fixed chassis, double bogie design and 8 wheel fixed chassis with inside bearings (nicknamed ‘watercart’ tenders) all of which Hornby have tooled up for. In real life all 3 tenders were used in Southern railway days - ye the watercart type has only been seen on a single BR era release. Similarly the 6 wheeled tenders have (train set apart) failed to appear in SR livery.
The class initially lacked smoke deflectors and had the ‘E’ Prefix to their numbers - Hornby haven’t produced a single model without deflectors and the only ‘E’ prefixed loco is in the train set.
Some were built by the LSWR (though they did not carry names till SR days) giving further livery options.
00:12:07 - this must be the picture of milk.
TBH, I think it says a lot when "Not Faulty!" is in the title, lmao.
