Just wow! I’ve literally watched a ton of these as a newbie to the bonsai world in the last year and tell me... why are the huge business channel videos not nearly as well laid out for a beginner?? Thank you so much, really! This was so helpful!
I appreciate you saying that! I noticed that a lot of the channels out there aren't very helpful too. There's a few that I have learned a lot from! Nigel saunders is one of the best ones out there. Also Peter Chan from herron's Bonsai is great. I always recommend those two because they are so different and contrasting in their styles. Thanks for the comment!
Pretty cool ficus. I have about 12 of them now. All cuttings from the original one I was given a few years back. I only have one that has the huge trunk swell on it, the original parent plant. They do look really neat when they get a lot of Arial roots on them, but also look good with a clean trunk also. Good video man. I liked it. 👍👍
About the 3rd time I've watched this one. Good info. I use a bark that is made for terrariums called Repti-Bark found at pet stores or Amazon. Smaller pieces and could even be screened smaller for bonsai. Also cutting that large root looked like the right idea, on next repot I bet you even go lower.
Awesome! Just bought my first ginseng ficus. Came in a small pot, soil is dry and roots overcrowding in the small pot. After watching this I know exactly what to do: firstly water it. Buy bigger pot, cut roots (if necessary), transfer into new soil. Thank you for your content. Subbed🤝
That was really amazing to watch and I learned a ton ! I have three of those need to get out of dirt real dirt. You taught me a ton. THANK YOU 😊. I did LIKE AND SUBSCRIBED 👍🏻💕
Thank you for this! I got a horrible looking shaggy monstrosity of one of these for Christmas and I was at a loss as to what to do. It looks like Godzilla is attacking Tokyo on my bonsai shelf! ⛩🦖
I have bought one to a friend, the one I got, looks like it has legs and a butt lol. I planted it higher to get more of the legs look. My friend want put n little skirt on it. She just want it as n house/patio plant and think it would look funny.
I am relatively new to Bonsai and have a Ficus Genseng which i brought from my local garden center, i have re potted it in to a more traditional bonsai pot however i didnt use any netting at the bottom of the pot. Its good draining soil so Im hoping its not too much of an issue? Really enjoy your videos top work!!
I make my own soil using perlite, pine bark, and this stuff called "absorb" that I get from auto parts stores. You have to sift all the dust particles out but it works great. I have a video on my page showing the process I do to make it. The whole thing costs about $20 and makes a ton.
never had a bonsai before but i am having a ficus ginseng in a 6cm pot do you think it will need potting on right away ? or should i leave it alone for a while
I have a ficus microcarpa that I’ve been giving it regular potting soil & I’ve read that it’s really bad for it so I ordered a bonsai soil mix that’s similar to yours.
To some extent at least, yes. I ha e a couple others that I carved recently. .y latest video on my channel is a larger one that I carved along the top to smooth it out.
@@kimrichardson8376 the ones that I did were part Deadwood part live wood. I think you just want to do it within reason. And I would wait until the middle of summer to do it.
Right.. you say retusa but so much that I read is that they are a microcarpa.. is it that the bottom half (roots) are retusa and the top part (branches) are microcarpa grafts? 🧐🤷🏻♂️ this is a subject which has baffled me as so many websites say different things 😂
Yeah, that's a legitimate question. So I have another video of this same kind of tree where that question came up and it sent me down a rabbit hole. Come to find out, it's a green island ficus on top, grafted onto something else. I don't think I ever figured out what the bottom actually is though.
@@BonsaiBoise I suppose we will just have to love em for what they are.. whatever that is 😂 I have 2.. a small one In one of those cheap blue oval pots (That’l be fun when it’s time to repot) then I have another larger one which is still in a plastic pot.. I also have benjamina variegated which I’m trying to do as a willow style and then Iv just recently bought a serissa foetida variagated.. Got that one from Peter Chan at Herons.. no idea what to do with that one.. I’m just letting it grow out for now.. One side of it is flush with growth from top to bottom.. The other side is bald 😂
@@johnheckles8239 Oh that's cool! I've not seen a ficus done as a willow style before. That's what I love about them, they're so versitile! Also cool about the one you got from Peter Chan! Someday I hope to visit Herons nursery.

Mark here great job bro on the Ginseng Ficus ,👌👍
Thanks Mark!
new here sir , what a lovely nebari and base more success to your channel🙏
I appreciate that!
Thanks bro I learned a lot
I like how you use "make do" things IE the water bottle and the folk, yeah good video, thank you.
I was the king of dollar store bonsai tools, lol.

Amazing video! Do you have a hint on what to do if Ginseng Ficus has almost no roots?

Thank you! I appreciate that. And I wouldn't worry, as long as it's draining well, that's the important thing.
Nice video Bro. Goodluck too Bro..
Thank you!
I bought my first two ginseng Ficus What type of ginseng do you use to start these plants?
Any updates on this one? It's adorable 😊
Thank you! I ended up selling this one actually but last I heard it was doing great.
Thank you, just going to try and replicate your actions! First bonsai, just like yours.
Why is the goal to use the smallest pot?
is Ficus Bonsai suitable for artificial light and indoor environments? What would be the requirements for indoors?
Except cold. They hate cold.
Hi. My ficus are really leggy. How do I cut them to make them more bushy??? What is in your soil ???
What kind of soil are you using?
What kid of soil are you using for repotting? Thanks!

What is your soil mixture?
never had a bonsai before but i am having a ficus ginseng in a 6cm pot do you think it will need potting on right away ? or should i leave it alone for a while
I usually give it a couple weeks to acclimate. Then as long as it looks healthy and happy, I would repot into bonsai soil.
@@BonsaiBoise thank you i will be scared to do that but will give it a go after a few weeks
Hey how well does the bonsais respond to non organic soil ?
Opinions vary on that, but the key is to fertilize it regularly if you don't use organics.
I have a ficus microcarpa that I’ve been giving it regular potting soil & I’ve read that it’s really bad for it so I ordered a bonsai soil mix that’s similar to yours.
& it’s non organic as well
You can grow it on rock beneath the roots.
This fellow on the wild some time grow between gab in rocks
do you do this repotting in the Spring or any time ???? Great video Thank you
Actually I repot my tropicals in mid summer through early fall. And thanks!
@@BonsaiBoise that is a great help to me !!!
Hi there do you know if this type of ficus can be carved?

Does it always have to be dead wood on the tree?

Foliage = fo-lee-edge, not foil-edge
Too much soil was removed.
Yeah, and he used too small of a pot
Correct on both accounts! The tree went to bonsai heaven.
oh no!
Why are you cutting that shit off for no reason? It’ll fit
