"To deceive your enemy, first deceive your allies."
I think it's Ieyasu-style, so when Toranaga says he's surrendering, it's probably because he already has a plan. Ieyasu was like that. Therefore, his nickname is "Tanuki Oyaji" (Uncle Tanuki).
The proprietress of the tea shop was wonderful. This is the spirit and way of life of Japanese women who are not wealthy. she has courage.
In Europe and America, it is said that ``Japanese women were being persecuted,'' but that is not the case. This was true to some extent in every country, and Japanese women took their fate into their own hands and lived strong lives. Often, it is the women who have been in de facto control of the home. The man is the master in public. However, wives were often the real leaders. It is said that ``It is a virtue of a wise woman not to put herself out there and blindly cry out for her status to be improved, nor to hysterically seek approval.'' Like the proprietress of a teahouse, she achieved self-realization through courage and wisdom.

Nagakado is not a stupid character. I think he's more of a tragic character. There's a lot more in the background than it seems, so his death is absolutely tragic. He was naive at best.

He was average. Unfortunately, everyone else is smarter than him.

    • @daryllndemmayah4874
      @daryllndemmayah4874 Před měsícem +5

@@nont18411he is not average, just not developed yet completely as a person. Imagine all the pressure he feels having to become a man in that era. Not just any man, but a warrior and a great leader. Having to live up to the expectations of those around him because of his father success. His older brother sacrificing himself for his father. Showing honor and duty, that he is trying to emulate. Everyone underestimating him, calling him a spoiled brat. Comparing him to his father and not even acknowledging his abilities but most importantly him as a person. Plus his father does not acknowledge him and his father has no trust for his family or his closest allies due to. The pain and suffering his Grandfather caused upon his dad. I blame this on toranaga. If he had more faith in his family, had more trust in them. Develop a proper relationship like Fuji’s grandad and Mahiko’s father did to her. Nagakado might me completely different. Tornaga did not develop a proper relationship with those around him. That’s understandable, that’s why you see Yabushige playing the fence a lot. Because Toranaga did not treat his allies and others properly. Yes he showed loyalty, but he did not make them feel welcome or appreciated. That can often lead to distrust, resentment and in Nagakados case over worshiping his Dad and over ambition that can lead to his death.

The kid was so eager to make a name for himself and with samurai idealogy being that even death can be beatiful/ legendary, The guy has aboslutely no risk aversion. If he was really trying to get the job done with his uncle he could've! But instead he wanted to also have the single head stroke that made his father such a legend, he took time prepping the strike just to be unaware of his footing and died because of it. I found it tragic more than frustrasting or funny to be honest.

Nagakado is tragic because his whole life he’s looked up to his father who’s only praised and seen as this godlike lord. So his whole life he’s been reaching to even stand next to his father and he never feels like he’s close. He dies trying to prove himself it’s truly unfortunate.

Buntaro was probably hoping Mariko would say John molested her or that it was unsolicited, but the moment she basically said "kill me if you must" that hope was dashed, she did ask for it and it was clear to Toranaga that rape was out of the question. That's why pressing charges against John only was not an option anymore, and he backed down.

Toranaga is playing tactically, Anjin walking away, Tora's surrender. I think its a bigger plan at play here. That young kid was kept out of the loop and withiout knowing what is going on he's having to act on his own.

When Toronaga's son was convincing him to do Crimson Sky because he hasn't lost a war Toronaga said it's because he was never the one who attacks. I think he would rather defend that attack so his plan is to do exactly that

Per the sand in the title sequence, I think its possible that one of the intentions is to show Blackthorne's ship "sailing" across the sands of a zen/sand garden, disturbing everyone's zen and causing ripples.

My reaction was the same as yours! He got what he deserved. He didn't stand up for his father and so Fuji (the G.O.A.T.) lost both husband and child, he slaughtered all those men with the canons and with no provocation and was acting like an idiot all the time. His death was inevitable...

Honestly blamed Toranaga’s upbringing and him for the whole Nagakado situation. Same with his brother betraying him and Yabushige one of his closet allies play the fence. His complete distrust and iciness to those around cause all of this situation. Yes he grew up not trusting people because of his past. But don’t be completely closed hearted to even your loved ones and allies. Because that will plant seeds of doubt in them. His philosophy of decieving his allies so he can deceive his enemies is great. But he can still do that with out the cold hearted and distrusting of people he has. If you’re not going to trust people. At least as the great deceiver you are, at least decisive them in you being trusting and having faith in them.

Im grasping at straws here but I feel like this episode is a total misdirect, hearkening back to the switcherooo on episode 3.
    1. why the heck was Buntaro and Mariko asking their "Last request" to Toranaga? Especially after the reveal of the last episode, it seems dissonant.
    2. Then there's the part where Blackthorne speaks rudely to the war assembly in the end but was allowed to just walk even with his titles, probably because he is a barbarian... There must be an exit strategy, as before walking out, Blackthorne names Yabushige, and Nagakado (both trained to handle the cannon regiments).
    3. Looking at everyone's expression, Mariko does not seem to surprised, or more importantly, too concerned about the outburst.
    4. And also there's the convo with Gin. If they were really about to be wiped out, why did she make those requests, unless she knows something that everyone else don't know.
    5. Also, no way Nagakado could just barge his way in into the willow-world like that. Either he was acting independently, or he acted on orders, but his or his uncle's death bought some time.

NGL, this episode felt slow. There was a little plot progression and character development but I'm getting annoyed by how they flirt with progressing some storylines and then kick the can down the road (e.g., the love triangle, John asking for his ship and crew, the courtesan simp being jealous, etc.). I felt this episode would be 30 minutes without the padding.
