    I'm not saying that chain-shot would have been that effective against infantry and cavalry on open ground.
    I am saying that the nineteen cannon from William Adams's ship loaded with naval chain-shot and the 500 muskets that also came from his ship are definitely credited with having a huge bearing on who became the next Shogun in actual Japanese history by credible historians.

    it isn't so much the cannon as the technique and usage. The Portuguese and Spanish had a different culture then the English in terms of cannon usage. The English accepted the fact that it is a much newer and better way to do naval combat, using longer cannons to improve accuracy and getting much better at naval gunnery. The tool he used to aim the cannons, while not that much of a thing remembered, is quite the difference, among other things. So the English was just built different in terms of naval combat.
    Edit: the best show case of this is like stuff around the Spanish Armada, where the English lost no ships, but the Spanish lost 44 ships.

      The Royal Navy literally beat what was considered to be the creme de la creme of sailing Navies at the time. No one expected such a huge victory against one of the two European "superpowers" at the time. Spain and Portugal had literally "split" the world between themselves and expected no one to stand up to them.

      It's a Dutch ship but perhaps they had English guns. The English had already standardized their canon (caliber,weight,length) which made shots more consistent, also they had developed a better method of making more round(spherical) shot than other countries did at the time.

    The Rifled Cannon did not come around into extensive use until the 1800s. Breech loading cannons (Loaded from the back instead of the front) were not invented until the 1800s as well.
    Your “Sigh, clack, pack pack pack” and going through the manual of arms had me rolling on the ground laughing. This History Nerd feels seen.

    • @voiceofraisin3778
      @voiceofraisin3778 Před 4 měsíci +4

      Breech loading cannon were fairly common, but only for smaller calibre guns, usually deck mounted swivel guns. The charges would be held in something like an iron mug with a big handle, you place it in the back of the barrel, smack in a couple of wedges to keep it in place, fire, remove the wedges and the previous mug/chamber and repeat.
      Because of gas leakage and because high charges would probably blow the chamber backwards off the gun its mostly useful for low charge, low range weapons so perfect for a clearing decks of borders or dissuading small boats who get under the main guns angle of depression.
      Wiki has a good example if you search for breech loading swivel gun 1600.
      Apparently the Japanese had copies of european breech loaders from the early 1500's.
      Which might explain why theyre used to low pressure short range cannons and not the newer high quality higher velocity (by 1600 standards) english guns with long range accuracy.
      The Spanish and portugese are still in the era of infantry boarding to win a naval action, the English are pioneering the idea of race built all gun fast ships that will devastate an enemy by gunnery.

    • @GettysburgLentz
      @GettysburgLentz Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@voiceofraisin3778 thank you for the information. This is all very fascinating. I knew about the swivel guns being breechloading, but those were used primarily for antipersonnel and it was my understanding that they were not used for disabling ships. Breechloading light artillery pieces on land and breechloading heavier cannons on naval vessels do not really make and appearance until the 19th Century, at least in Europe. It makes sense about the English pioneering a new approach, because that plants the seeds for their future naval dominance.

    Chain-shot was originally created to tear through the sails and rigging of an opponent's sailing ship. One good broadside could cripple a ship, if well aimed. A sailing ship in 1600 would probably have a good supply of chain-shot in the magazines.

    For people who have never experienced an earthquake, I experienced the big 7.something one in California in 2019 and the 4.something foreshock. From my experience, the magnitude 4 one felt like a subway moving underground below you. You’re a little unbalanced, and it’s shaking, but it could be missed in some cases. I’d suspect that was close to what John experienced at a different depth, so the shaking was a bit more prominent.
    The magnitude 7 one in California felt like the sidewalk became a carpet with rats running underneath it, destabilizing you. You can stay standing with effort, but the amount of shaking can be impactful.
    I have experienced a few magnitude 2 and 3 ones, and they are the same amount of shaking as artillery practice at an army base within 20 miles away, but quieter.

    Adam seem to be remembering something from high school history class. However, there have been many uses rifling in weapons before the American civil war. The War of Independence, for example, had many American volunteers using the Kentucky pattern rifle, copied from the German Jagers rifle. Due to the decentralised nature of their production there were variants with different names and a diversity of specifications.
    Rifling in hand held long guns was first used, by Europeans, in around 1520. This was an evolution of the German practice of using crossbow bolts with offset leather fletchings that caused the blot to spin. The cannon John is using are not rifled, as far as we can tell, they are just longer barrelled which is a different way of making them more accurate.

    At around @11:15 “Strut that runway Mama.”😆 Fuji is one loyal 🔫toting consort badass.
    Nice reaction Adam & Jay. I’m a born & bred NYer(I think you guys are in NY?👍😉) who is half-Japanese through me Mom’s so I grew up with Japanese culture in my household. Anyway, Japanese culture as you are probably aware is obsessed with politeness, etiquette, decorum, honor & duty. They are still very much pillars of Japanese society even in modern times but you’d imagine that it was taken even more seriously in the 17th century. Fuji doesn’t know Blackthorne yetbis duty bound to be loyal to him unconditionally. Of course this was an actual time when women were second class citizens as well. So glad they’re being brutally authentic not only with costumes, customs language, & even gestures but also with the hierarchical levels of society from feudal lords to peasants & from men to women. Fuji is still a girl boss without imbuing the values of modern society on 17th century anachronistically in the show.
    I mean we know it’s all so seeped in culturally that if you commit a social or moral transgression or faux pas even, it could mean self-deleting. It’s not like it is just forced upon the transgressor either as these norms & values are so strong an individual cannot even live with the shame & dishonor so death is the better alternative. Obviously this is too severe & flawed as we believe in forgiveness & redemption however flash forward toward modern times. We could use some of these values now as we see so much moral decay & societal deterioration. Many people these days seem to lake an sense of basic decorum of propriety & there is a complete lack of shame, respect, accountability, integrity & honor. Our modern society has a lot of individuals including some of those in power or high positions could use a heavy dose of learning what it means to have respect, decorum, & integrity while getting harsh lessons on accountability.

    The Japanese at this time would have had experience with the matchlock firearms of the Portuguese, and the earlier fire lance weapons of China and Korea. The culverin type of cannon they would have been shown by the Portuguese were notoriously inaccurate, and the earlier bombards of China, Korea, and the Mongols used stone shot, and all types were very slow to fire. There wasn't rifling available for cannons until the 19th century. What is different about the Dutch and English cannon is that the ones we see here are made of bronze. The look much fancier (having intricate designs), and are able to be fired more rapidly (and less prone to explode compared to the earlier types), and they're easier to manufacture. The English at this point were extremely experienced in naval combat at long range, as the Spanish and Portuguese ships were typically bigger and had larger crews, and typically could fire their ships' guns 2-3 times faster than their Iberian enemies, and more accurately.

      As someone who not only read the book but has seen the 1980s version, you are mistaken. In the book and in the 1980 version, Mariko does not claim that he slept with a courtesan, but with her maid, whom she anointed with her perfume. He knows that it wasn't her maid. In fact, the whole household knows it. It's just a convenient lie that everybody agrees to say. There's no gaslighting whatsoever.

      no this is wrong and its unfortunate this is so upvoted and affirmed. You don't need to read the book, listen to the official show podcast or go to the official website that has an episode summary for each episode.

    I beleive that -sama would refer to someone of a higher rank/station than you. -san would be to someone of similar rank/station. As the gardener is of low station, he would get no honorific, simply his name

    • @davidribeiro1064
      @davidribeiro1064 Před 4 měsíci

      Close but not quite right for the period. -San is a more recent evolution, more informal than -Sama, but for the period -sama would cover both uses.
      Uejiro being a gardener is almost certainly what today would be considered burakunin, an outcaste.

      @@davidribeiro1064 thank you for the clarification. I'm only going by the novel, but it's well known that Clavell did insert a lot of modernisms that are accurate today, but would not have been at the time. Directly from Latin tribunal "platform for the seat of magistrates, elevation, embankment," from tribunus "official in ancient Rome, magistrate," literally "head of a tribe"😉

      Traditionally the first three Roman tribes were created by Romulus, but the etymology of tribe which is tribus, may derive from three parts, or from the people as a whole.

    You are not reacting to Shogun season 1 episode 4. You were reacting to Shogun episode 4. There will be no other seasons. This is a standalone book. And since it is based on actual historical figures, as well as the fact that the author is now dead, there's not going to be anymore.
    Also, how do you guys keep adding more numbers to things? There are two Christians on the council, not three as you suggestion in the last video. They are not down to four people on the committee, but noun to three. They were four with Toronaga. I'm starting to think you guys struggled in high school math even more than I did.
