Good job figuring out the doors. Sometimes when things get frustrating, walk away and do something else. When you come back to it, things tend to go smoother. The doors only come with 4 plugs because you've got double sliders which means 1 screw 3-4" from the top and bottom on both sides. The strike for the door latch gets the short screws from the factory replaced with long screws (not included) that drive through shims and into the wall framing. This secures the center of the frame and gives the security needed for the door latch. On doors like that, it's best to use a sill pan to keep water draining to the outside especially since there's no porch cover outside. If no sill pan, then its best to run 2 continuous beads of caulk under the threshold. Rule of thumb on door and window sizing: windows are manufactured 1/2" smaller than the rough opening so a 36" opening will have a 35 1/2" window. If the doors are manufactured by the window company, they will still follow that same sizing. Doors on the other hand, are sized by the dimension of the door slab. So to frame for a door opening, take the slab width+3/4" for each jamb+1/2"-3/4" spacing for squaring the door. So a 36" wide door would be framed to 38".

I need to watch these up to date. Shim shingles are what you need for the doors. Usually the top of doors and windows are not fastened to the headers. Allows it to float as the headers tend to grow and shrink.
Having a 1/4” to 1/2” gap at the header is good too. That’s the first time I’ve seen patio doors with no flanges. Makes it a bit of a struggle. Learn by the trial by fire method. That’s how I do a lot of projects. 😁
For doors without nailing flanges. Use shims between the door frame and jamb to wedge the door in place. Usually one pointed and one pointed out. Push the shims together until tight. Typically you would put shims at each screw hole.

windows normally need to have quarter inch spacing on sides and top so that they do not get squeezed and bind moving part of window, allow for expansion thus open and close easily. Gap gets filled with insulation or soft expendable foam.
Doors normally do not have flanges, because they need to be levelled vertically so that they do not swing on their own. Naturally they need to be squared.
Hinged side is shimmed squared & level'd tight against frame and preferably screwed into the stud so its firm and does not shake. rest gets shimmed accordinlly and nailed or screwed and gaps filled with insulation
If the window is not sliding well check that the frame was installed level and plumb. If not fix that but also get a bar of soap and rub it along the window edge where it slides metal to metal. It can be very effective.

Measure the window corner to corner to check the square, and check to see that the window is right side up, wheels on the bottom.
Spray the window track with silicone, it will free it right up !!

I love your video’s have watched them all. I’m envious of what you have and what you are achieving.I am certainly no expert in window installation but when installing my patio doors and windows I was told to square them using spacers ,use your fixings,sometimes drilling through the spacers if necessary and the in England we use an expanding foam which you spray in the gap’s it expands slightly and seals the doorframe or window frame.Please,I’m not saying this is the correct way,my walls were brick rather than timber but if it might help you in the future then I’m pleased if it doesn’t I’m confident that the two of you will find a solution as you work so well together and you are a fantastic example of the young trying to achieve .Stay safe and healthy ❤️🏴🇬🇧👍

You should be checking level and plumb on ALL windows regardless on the size!!!
You may need to use double shims at the side jambs top middle and bottom. to fill the gap use your level on the door to adjust so the gap is even all the way around. you don't want the gap too tight or the door will bind. I'm sure you two will figure it out I love your channel. you two are a great Team.

To lubricate metal slide windows try looking into using Graphite so it doesn't build up with Gunk. Or candle wax.

"retrofit window" is the keyword you're after for installation instructions on that patio door as patio doors are basically giant windows. In a nutshell, you do exactly what you did where you put panhead screws through the side of the door frame into the house framing, putting shims behind to keep the frame straight, plumb, square, level, etc. White silicone can fill all your screwholes pretty easily. Hope you guys are surviving the atmospheric river. Enjoying the videos!

You need windows that are low enough and open up enough to get out in case of fire or you may not find a company that will insure your house. Especially in a wooded area.

When installing windows most contractors like myself prefer to use 2" galvanized roofing nails, top left or top right, use a torpedo level when you plumb the window out, nail accordingly.

Does Patios are very common in europe. and we screw them in place with only four screws in the corners and fill the gap wit hard expanding foam for the final fixation. The one major different, we mostly build them in stone/brick walls.
I knew you would get it. The frame must be square first with room for shims. That first window you installed should be removed and replaced with a better window. The sliding portion should not twist as it is moved.
First of all Windows/slider kind have to be squared. Set in frame move all the way to one side of opening mark it on flange and wall. Pull window to the other side make another mark. Measure the distance between the mark example 1/2 inch. Divide the distance in half mark the wall and put the window bottom on this line. One screw each corner of the bottom securly and now measure for square. Adjust top of window with a screwdriver or chisel until the exact measure corner to corner. We never nailed the flange on top to let the header float.
put a 2x4 on each corner in n angle on the outside to stop window from falling outside
Patio door seems like designed for Brick Molding. Center door in hole take out the slider heavy one and set aside. 2 Screw Bottom corners i each and do the same measure corner to corner when it's the same measure Tack one side put in slider window in track and slide slowly to close it to see if You have the same spacing on the side rails. One screw top and bottom Middle section shim with shingles then fasten. Same for other side. Patio doors take 5 mins to install. Note Rough in measure means that is the dimension sizes widthx length 3x window is 3 feet wide by 4 feet long.
Shim the screw locations to space away the frame from the wall what making is square and plumb. Door may come crooked and may need some adjustment to make it square, plumb and level.

You're mistake was you bought double sliders At least that's what it looks like They're just is hard to put in As double At doors Or double French doors To bottom Make sure that it is Perfect Level at the bottom with shims Then usually square And square the sides Very easy to do I didn't see 1 thing anywhere You need to she decides to Don't feel bad After you put in a few hundred of them You only get 10 minutes A door Good luck
Like your videos. Fun to watch you work in an out of the way spot and solve your own problems. Sorry you had so much trouble with the sliding doors and the instructions were terrible. I have helped install patio doors 3 times. All of which had an outside flange solving weather issues. The first was as our house was constructed and the door was built into the frame and then the wall was lifted. The other 2 were replacement. We put the doors in, then shims around the frame to square them up, followed by foam insulation to insulate and weather seal. Same procedure can be used for window openings that are too large.
PS make sure you use a level to ensure Plumb and level
you have to use shims on the side jambs and evenly spaced . look on line How to shim a patio door in an opening.

getting it squared in shouldn't be difficult if the building is sort of square and plumb (which I assume it is just about). You may need an assortment of these plastic shims which are used to space out behind a screw location. A screw can otherwise bow the frame of the door out of square which can cause issues opening the door. These plastic shims are available in various thicknesses (anywhere from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch for sure) but you can also cut wooden shims and save yourself a couple of bucks. cut shallow wedges and use two (one from the inside and one overlapping from the outside and drive them into each other just enough the frame does not bow but the frame of the door is tight against the wedges and the building opening...
You'll figure it out...

Did you get it in upside down ? I have seen that happen a few times . They have weep holes on the bottom size.

Hey man, don't get down. Make a plan, if that don't work make another. Keep at it you will see through it.
The window/door opening is typically 1/2 wider on each side to allow for minute adjustments. You want to set the window in the opening the have her use a small level on the inside and center it in the opening and ajust up/down side/side till it is level and plumb and centered in the opening. For windows you then pull the tyvek over the top of the window exterior and tape it off. Then you can then nail it off once it is centered/plumb and level. Then tape the top and sides but not the bottom so water can escape.
For the door, install the sill seal and silicone bead on the bottom. The width is also generally 1/2 more than the door on each side. Tilt the door at a 45 degree angle outwards and with two people lower the base into the opening and then tilt it into place. This way you get a good seal with the silicone bead on the bottom. While one person hold it on the outside, inside person takes a level and centers the door from side to side and then plumbs it. First on the hinge side then the lock side. Once level and plumb are set, insert the shims on the hinge side in 4 places from top to bottom. Ideally they should be behind the hinges. I always take out one each of the hinge screws and run a 4 inch screw in its place thru the shims and into the frame. The shims mesh together in the center when inserted from the inside and outside simultaneously. If the door has an insulating strip running down the center you can pull this out and insert the screws there into the frame then put the insulation strip back afterwards hiding the screws. Check again the level/plum and then repeat this process for the jamb side. Once all 4 inch screws are installed around the edges the door should be checked a final time for level/plumb. The shims should serve to jamb the door into place not allow it to move once level/plumb is achieved. After the door is all screwed in use some low expanding spray foam and fill in the gap around the remaining door edge. You can also use backer rod too if you have that. A well hung door should have an equal gap around the closed door.

Wow! It looks to me like you're putting the flange of the door on the inside? The flange usually is placed outside and screwed too header, just like the windows. There is way too much of an air gap at the header so that you need to add filler and shims to close that air gap. Otherwise, the screws when tightened will draw the frame up and out of shape when they are tightened. I just realized that the door has no flange. That's just insane!!!
ABOUT the time you learn how to build this house maybe for a small fee or maybe write a book on how you built your house and put it out there on the market to help recoup some of your losses and maybe help pay off your land quicker. Put everything from the refrigerator, to how to pump water up hill. Basically put everything You did while building this house and include heart aches as well as good times include the chicken coop and goat hut with ROUTE 66 sign on it. I would buy your book
There is definitely something wrong!! Consider going back to the source and qualifying the closure on a different window. If they are all like that, you got cheap windows. They should seal better and not have nearly as most slop in movement.

greetings folks; nothing bad that a little vaseline will not hurt. if it was built as such you could rub the tracks with wax. yalls call. also yall should use butyl rubber instead of silicone for caulking. patio doors are supposed to be level with the finished floor. yall are not supposed to have to step over a high threshhold............g
Thumbs up for being so honest. Question, what type of material do guys intend to use on the floors? Wood? Carpet? Tiles? I ask because it's always best to prop up the bottom sill not the top, giving you some room gives you more choices with flooring. And use a roller to install the waterproofing material and wood shims to level sliding glass doors from the ground up so to speak. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, going in the hot tub sounds like a great idea.

The problems you are encountering are because it is not properly shimmed you have to keep an eye closed eye on the reveal distance all the way around it should be equal so it's not binding be patient and properly Shim it
You could go online with your cellphone or computer and go to CZcams and put "Install sliding Glass Door" in the SEARCH BOX??? There are many video's there to WATCH AND LEARN FROM just change your title to whatever it is. I feel your pain and struggle for sure he have built a few houses and/or supervised and did a lot of work too. You two are doing a terrific JOB and there are always quirks or variances with windows for sure. GOOD JOB on install. God bless you both.

any gaps around your doors and windows fill with expanding foam but do not mess with the foam until really dry. Any foam overfill trim off with a knife or saw. Doing great guys stick with it!

Hi guys just to let you know that you need to have a 1/4 inch gap around the windows in the house for expansion.an you should use roofing nails too for the window movement.

Shims are your doors and windows best friend remember not to tight, they will expand and contract over time, in square is a MUST

Don’t overcomplicate the patiodoor install, put it in and use shims on every side to make it square and then screw it in..thats it…you are doing great!
I watched this video twice and I could not see that you did not use any shims at all that's why the one window is sticking and also on the big Patio door you have to shim both sides of the frame after you make sure that everything is straight don't worry about some gaps just make sure that you use shims where the screw holes are,one from the inside and one from the outside and gently slide them together on both sides of the frame to prevent the frame from bending. Shims you can buy anywhere in a hardware store and they will show you how it is done it is so very easy and that goes for all windows and doors in the house.The gaps will be filled in with foam and then finished with trim. You both are doing such a fantastic job I just love watching you both,I hope that I was a little bit of help. Lots of Blessings to you both..
