    The Christian clergyman is wrongly depicted. In the Near East and Middle East, the dominant Christian denomination is the Eastern Orthodox Church. Although there are Catholics in Jerusalem, the dominant form is known as Eastern Catholics not Roman Catholics. They are native Christian churches that accept the communion with Rome but retain their Orthodox liturgy and other traditions. The clergyman depicted is a Roman Catholic priest. The clergyman depicted should be an Eastern Orthodox priest.

    • @Angelo-rj5er
      @Angelo-rj5er Před 5 lety +9

      MrLantean actually, most of the Christians in the Middle East are oriental orthodox not Eastern Orthodox (mostly Coptic, Syriac, and armenian Apostolic). Also, like you said, there are still Catholics in Jerusalem. And in this movie, the priest happened to be a catholic instead of orthodox. There’s nothing wrong with it. He’s probably a member of the Latin patriarchate of Jerusalem, which is Roman rite not eastern rite.

    • @MrLantean
      @MrLantean Před 5 lety

      I had totally forgotten about Oriental Orthodox Church. Its true that it is the dominant Christian denomination in the Middle East while Eastern Orthodox Church is the second place. The clerical robes is that of Roman Catholic clergy since the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem is after all the Roman Catholic Episcopal See of Jerusalem. I just find it odd and unusual to have Christians of Jerusalem be represented by a Roman Catholic clergyman as Roman Catholics are a small minority. I believe that depicting an Orthodox clergyman should be a more accurate setting..

      @@MrLantean The largest Christian denomination in Israel is Greek Catholic, followed by (Greek) Orthodox and then Latin Catholic and then a number of much smaller denominations. In any event, though, the whole scene is off. The Sepulchre (which, by the way, is not "above" the Western Wall at all) has been divided for centuries between the Orthodox and Catholics and some smaller groups, the leader of the Jews at the time looked nothing like that (in fact, there was no single leader); they would not have the power to "divide up market times," not that market times have ever been "divided" nor were ever a sticking point; they would not have been meeting in the church- indeed, the rabbi probably would have preferred not to enter anyway; the head of police's job would in no way be dependent on unrest or quiet; the loss of relic would probably not lead to the threatened unrest; no huge announcements would be made at the Western Wall, which in any event had no large plaza at the time...I can go on. The fact that the priest is Catholic is a problem, but hardly the largest.

    So I liked the movie, however this scene drove me nuts. Poirot for all his intellectual powers desecrates the holiest site in Judaism with his cane. Every Jewish man there would have physically shown their displeasure.This is clearly the Western Wall(don’t remember if they say that but design, structure, and the paper stuck in it reminiscent of prayers it can’t be anything else). Yes I feel there was some intentional mockery, not only of Judaism but religion in general; a priest an imam and a rabbi... Israel in the 20’s had a lot of crazy stuff going on war, adventure, etc... why not pick that and leave faith alone; or at least don’t blatantly disparage it.
