I feel like a pretty obvious solution for the League Cup would to just have it so that the teams playing in Europe don't play in the League Cup. It'd make it more likely for outsiders to win and earn a Europa league place, while lessening the sheer amount of games teams in Europe have to play.

I’m a Man Utd fan and was gutted for Newcastle (not only because I had a bet on them to win) but that decision was so transparently favouring the so-called “UCL Elite clubs” - even tho PSG have never won the thing, so don’t know why they are considered that.
Sincerely hope Newcastle go through. Pretty sure they are at home against Milan, so they can win that for sure. And Dortmund would love to KO PSG! So it’s definitely on! It would be the right thing to happen and would right that wrong of a decision!
Even if they don’t, Newcastle have shown they belong more than holding their own in a group of de*th.

The ref was doing excellent up until that point.
I almost feel like after turning down previous VAR checks earlier in the game and the PSG players petulant reactions as if they were having some kind of injustice over every decision, which worked up the crowd creating a hostile atmosphere, that the ref just thought “if I don’t give this I’ll be the target of the hate after the game, if they miss it then at least it will be on their players not me”
Basically boiling down to it being easier to upset the minority travelling fans at a chance of a 1-1 draw than making the call to effectively result in a 1-0 loss to a hostile home crowd.
I’d also like to point out something that got little coverage but Lascelles and Trippier clearly spotted and was trying to point out to the ref, Ramos’ encroachment during the penalty (go back and watch the penalty and keep your eye on #9)

  • @whitenbald

Gary, Alan and Micah. Firstly, love the Pod. I would just like to comment on the sin bin being brought into football. I see this as a positive thing. I played hockey at a good level and hockey has a green (2-5 min sin bin), yellow (10 min sin bin) and red card (off for the remainder of the game) system.
Everyone mentions that it makes the game more defensive, but what is spoiling the game currently? Time wasting, crowding the referee etc this would be reduced and see a faster flowing game

Merson explained why sinbins won't work. Sinbins for starters takes points away from the opposition team in rugby, which isn't possible in football. Also if there's a timeout for footballers, it'll result in parking the bus - it'll make football much less entertaining

  • @midnightandthepatiochairs388

Is there any mileage in captains being able to elect, on a pre-set number of occasions as in cricket and tennis, going to VAR? So, apart from goal-line technology (which is always present), VAR is only used a stipulated number of times in a game, perhaps twice per team at most in the whole game? That means big errors can be put right, it is used sparingly, as judged by the players with their captain, and it doesn't hold up the whole game and interfere so much.

  • @The_Judge300

The penalty given to PSG stinks of corruption in my opinion.
    It made zero sense.
Either one or more refs were paid off, or an order were given from above to give that penalty.
Newcastle are losing so extremely much from this and they should be able to sue the UEFA for this if they drop out of the Champions League because of this.
It should have serious consequences for the referees and UEFA when something like this happen.

It’s time that communications between VAR and the ref are broadcast in real time as it is in rugby. During the conversation either on the field or in front of the monitor the ref should describe what s/he is or isn’t seeing as an offence and challenge the VAR to state what rule has been broken. Let’s stop the cowardly VAR practice presently being used and show some courage and conviction.

Handball is always gona be a subjective decision. Give the officials the power to make the subjective decision on intentionality and natural positioning
Surely a proposal like this would help it immeasurably:
    Handball rule:
->Is the arming/handling of ball deemed intentional (probably 1% of cases)
    - if Yes - pen
    - If No ->
    Pen only given:
If arming/handling contact occurs during what is deemed by the officials an unnatural movement / shape taken by the alleged offender (ie. Something deemed an unnatural athletic position for the demands of the game - running, jumping, protecting, slide tackling etc)

Hi guys! I want to ask a question, it’s probably going to be buried in here but I’m not on any of the other socials. I’ll probably keep asking it
What happens immediately after you’ve been sent off?
For example, whenever the cameras follow a dismissed player you always see someone with an earpiece taking them down the tunnel, who is that? Official or part of the coaching staff?
Are you interviewed as part of a process?
Always wondered. Hope to hear it answered :)

The mistakes by VAR is worse now than before VAR. It is one thing for a one human to make a quick on the spot decision based on what he saw or thought he saw. He had no state of the art technology, no way to stop the match and perform a lengthy review of the events. Rewinding and slowing the action from every angle. As such a decision is made, good or bad and the game naturally carry’s on, it flows. The officials were given the benefit of the doubt and fans would debate it for years to come over a pint.

It’s like European refs didn’t get the memo when it comes to handballs not being given when it deflects of another body part. Man Utd got done at least once by this last season in the Europa. It didn’t look as bad as the Newcastle one, but the ball clearly hit Martinez’s leg and then hit his arm.
I could see why the ref gave it, he mustn’t have seen the ball hit his leg first, but I was shocked when VAR didn’t point that out and tell the ref it’s not a Pen! It’s madness!
When that happens there’s literally no point having VAR!

Wage caps and contract details are open to the public in the US. You can find out every player contract details for all the big sports NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL & MLS. So no point in trying to hide it as any fan who wants to know can easily find out. Also they pay far more than the Premier League so US English should stop using them as some kind of bench mark…none would make it in the top earners in England either.

Think a solution to the league cup problem would be making premier league teams only allowed to play 3 players over 23. Or something like that. Therefore becomes about younger talents and gives EFL clubs more of a chance of winning it. Not a perfect solution but better that what it is now.

I'm not sure sin bins are the answer to the problem of professional fouls, but I would like them to do something about it. In that example of the Cup Final given, I think the punishment for a foul like that effectively gives teams at least 4 opportunities to stop a really strong goalscoring position from being created, as you do have to be more careful once on a yellow but for me the freedom to outright and actively cheat a few times first is something I've never liked.

They should totally change the handball rules to make it all so much easier.
If it is clear that the player means to stop the ball with his/her hand/arm, it should be ruled a handball.
If a hand/arm stops the ball going into the goal apart from the goalkeeper, it should be ruled a handball.
And there should always be an ex player in the VAR room to advice the referees about what is natural or not and what is meant to be done or not.

It feels like VAR is no longer being used for the purpose it was introduced for - its being used to scrutinise everything not point out howlers. Perhaps the way forward is to limit its use to the most common obvious mistake - off-side - and leave the rest to the referee on the pitch?

Wrong Gary ... in the Lewis Miley incident the ball came off his thigh before hitting his arm. The only small difference between that and the Tino incident is that Lewis was moving his arm away from the ball, yet Tino's running action meant his elbow came towards the ball. (It was still a natural arm position though, so neither was a penalty).

I think if you're playing in europe of any kind (CL, EL & ECL) then you don't need to compete in the league cup. It'll stop the game congestion that the big clubs complain about & it'll give a another team who doesn't win trophies a good chance to win one.

The VAR Supreme has the powers to change the Final Full Time score.
