- From the McCalmans 1975 vynil album "Smuggler" Ian found this tune added new words.and Derek said of Smuggler was his best rendition of any song he'd recorded
And for you who want to join in.here'is the words..............
Smuggler
The boat rides south o Ailsa Craig, in the waning of the light,
Theres thirty men in Lendalfit, tae mak our burden light.
Theres thirty horse at Hazelholm, with the halters on their heads.
All set this night upon you hight, if wind and water speed.
Smugglers drink of the Frenchmans wine,
And the darkest night is the smugglers time,
Away we ran from the exciseman,
Its a smugglers life for me,
Its a smugglers life for me.
O lass ye hea a cosy bed, and cattle ye hae ten,
Can ye no live-a lawful life, and live wi lawful men.
But must I live with namely goods, while theres foreign gear sae fine,
Must I drink at the waterside, and France sae full of wine.
O weel I like tae see ye Kate, with the bairnie on thy knee,
But my heart is now wi the gallant crew, that plough thro the angry sea,
The bitter-gales, the tightest sales, the sheltered bay our goal.
Its the wayward life, its the smugglers strife, its the joy of the smugglers soul.
And when at last the sun comes up, and the cargo safely stored,
Like sinless saints to church we go, Gods mercy to afford,
And its champagne fine for communion wine, and the parson drinks it too,
With a sly wink prays, forgive these men, for they know not what they do. - Hudba
I've had a life full of music and The McCalmans started it all for me. Although I loved The Beatles, Searchers etc my first trip to an Edinburgh folk club was fantastic when the Macs were singing 'The Kerry recruit', Santiano, Sally Free and Easy, Willies' gone to Melville Castle, Lord of the Dance and so many more. I formed a 'McCalman's type' folk group and never stopped playing at age now 76. They were the inspiration to me. Loved them.
Just looking at the comments ,,,,how on earth can anyone give a thumbs down tae one of the best harmony groups of all time ,,,,,derek Moffat and nick keir ,,,,very very sadly missed ,,,,
Because you get nice people on CZcams (or any other online, err, "community")
.. and then there's the inevitable "Tosspints". Just ignore them.
@@AndroidUserCFB thanks for your input ….but …..they annoy the tits of me and I know I’m wastin my breath over these tosspots , there’s an LP by the mc Colman’s , strings and things , and a song called the weaving song , derek Moffat and the boys at their brilliant best . enjoy it if you have the time , and I’ll get back intae ma wee box and be a nice human being , for once ….thankyou
Morons who wouldn't know talent if it bit their arse.
I always liked the McCalmans. This song says it all. The vocals, the English Concertina, the mandolin , guitar . Brilliant.
Remembering max and danny. I heard this at the wedding reception. My first thought was the girl has weird taste . We were teenagers lol. Rest well both of you.
Jeeze.. near bring a tear to a lad's eye... memories of the Elbow Room in Kirkaldy, the Osprey Rooms in Aviemore, Sandy Bells in Edinburgh, The Ship in the 'Ferry... and folk like Hamish Imlach, Danny Kyle, Iain Mackintosh, Tich Frier, Rab Noakes, Dick Gaughan, -man that takes me back. R.i.P. Derek Moffat... an absolute 'god' to me when I was young..Thanks for posting. Ian McC ... you still have the best Scots folk voice ever. All the best.
i heard this song the first time in our englisch lesson the lyric was in our book ... what a time :D
first heard this scottish song sung by an irishman in cornwall :) love it.
Omg! This brings me back to 1971. It's makes me weep and happy.
My parents organized with the org.: Youth and Music a folkfestival in Eindhoven NL 1971.
The Mccalmans and Danny Kyle stayed in our house. I was nine and my brother 7 years old. I remember the next morning that all the left shoes where hurled away in the gardens of the neighbours. Thanks Kyle, mister Poodle. (lol)
I work for Folkwoods Eindhoven. I hope one day to meet The Mccalmans again on dutch soil. Thanks for the good memories
fantastic music saw them many times.
I still have the album "An Audience with the McCalmans" signed by Ian, Hamish and Derek, and a tape cassette of them from RAF Bruggen 1972.
Smuggler, in the McCalmans' version one of my favorite folk songs.
I was fortunate to experience the McCalmans as a child (1976-78?) at a folk music festival in Almindingen forst, Bornholm, and again in 1989 I think, both in Denmark.
The McCalmans is probably the best vocal band I have ever heard. Thanks for uploading.
its been 25 years since I've listened to this song!! Thank U CZcams!!!!!
Wow. It's still wonderful
I remem
ber doing my usual friday spot in the waverly bar in Edinburgh when these three guys asked if they could do a few numbers. glad to get a wee breather I said yes.that was the begining of a long friendship with the tightest harmony group I have ever heard.I became good friends with Derek particularily and shared a flat with Derek and Hamish for a while, great parties, great music and great pals.miss those times.
AH!!! sweet memories are the best
hey! this is a song that is reminiscent of my childhood days! oh how i used to listen this in the LP.... love u Darjeeling.. my favorite, my beloved
A wonderful version of a great song. They build up the layers superbly with the additions of instruments and harmony. I have heard them live on several occasions. What a great act . Even better live than recorded and very amusing. Other excellent songs on all of their L.P.s.
Every word you say is true -- and so well deserved. I used to see and hear them in the Cumbernauld theatre club back in 1970. Their songs are still as fresh and new in my mind as then. Delightful harmonies I will never tire of.
We are singing this song when we have a Campfire Evening with the Scouts!
A wonderful scottish folk song
Hi glad you enjoyed the Mac's
Back at last!
Good band and men
A wonderful rabble rouser, hey ho me hearties.
Check out The Stowes new single which is their version of Smuggler. Kevin Brinn does a proper job with the Scots-English! Very interesting tae hear a Cornishman sing a Scottish folk song!
If I ever smuggle cocaine I'm so listening to this during the process 😂😂😂😂

Smuggler: brilliant song. But I've listened to that second bit about 15 times in a row now. Anybody got lyrics on that? I don't want to have to navigate away from the video cause the music stops! Can't be having that.

And I bet they smuggled whisky the other way. 😄
