    Nice video . For viewers the 2 second rule explained. As the vehicle in front of you passes a fixed point at the side of road , count 1 , 2 , 3 . You should not reach the same fixed point before the end of that count in your vehicle . This ensures you have enough distance to the vehicle in front to slow down or stop safely . After over taking another vehicle , do not move back in , until all of the vehicle you have overtaken is visible in your left mirror . This ensures you are maintaining a safe gap , 2 seconds , to the vehicle you have just overtaken . For all the learners watching , this is a good example of what good driving looks like . No drama or excitement , nothing happens .

    Thank you for these videos, they are really helpful. I really understand them and the best to take them is conunting the exits, but when you are driving it's difficult because you have to do other things at the same time and then you lose the count of exits. I hope in my test I don't have to do them, but If I have, I will remember these videos. Thanks!!!

    I am thinking at the single stripe, 100 yards before slip road starts you should assess as soon as you can see up the slip road, is it completely full of vehicles queuing almost its entire length? You could abort the mission if you are too fast to enter the slip road! This scenario can happen at rush hours and normally there's a Queuing Traffic warning triangle sign. Can I see the full length of the slip road? Is it of an adequate size and straight to enter at full speed? Some older roads have only just been adapted to a level of modern suitability Is it down hill or up hill and which lane do I need.

    I have a problem with lorry drivers, I have just passed my test and also taken a few pass plus lessons. when I need to change lanes so I can leave the dual carriageway/ motorway. They don't allow me to go in to the lane I intended to and when i slow down to go behind them, either another car is there and another behind that one. If I slow down any further I would most likely cause a collison. It happens often that I miss my exit or have to be reckless and force my way in. It's difficult when I'm driving on a new road that i have never driven on before, so I'm at fault to when it comes to situations like that.

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  Před 6 lety +1

      On a dual carriageway or motorway you should drive in the left lane. Then use the other lanes to overtake. If you are finding it difficult to come back in to the left lane, you could be overtaking and not realising that there is no gap to come back in, or you could be planning it late to come back to the left.

  • @DodgeCity111
    @DodgeCity111 Před 4 lety +1

    What do you think about a vehicle waiting in the central reservation of a carriageway (70mph), then they pull into the fast lane and use it to get up to speed while cars have to undertake them?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  Před 4 lety

      I think it’s a dangerous procedure to do. They should wait for the left lane to be clear before they move across. By using the overtaking lane to move out, they have put everyone in a dangerous place, all they have to do is wait.

  • @leahbolt5215
    @leahbolt5215 Před 6 lety +1

    Hey! Is it vital to be in 5th gear whilst joining on the slip road or is 4th okay and go into 5th when you get on the dual carriageway? Will this be a minor? Thank you

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  Před 6 lety

      The slip road or acceleration lane is for building up your speed so when you join the traffic on the dual carriageways, it is easier and safer for you and the other cars. The other cars are driving at say 60 mph. So you would need to be close to that speed to join safely. At 40 mph you should be in 4th gear and 50 mph going into 5th gear. If you don’t use 5th at high speeds then you are putting more pressure on your car engine and polluting more. You will also find that you will struggle to overtake other cars in 4th gear at high speeds. So staying in 4th above 50mph will result in a driver fault and if you drove at 70 mph in 4th for a long period of time could result in a serious fault for gears.

  • @carina914
    @carina914 Před 6 lety +1

    hi travis great video but i have a question. the first clip - you waited for a gap in both lanes 1 and 2 before entering lane 1, is this always the procedure? if there's traffic in lane 2 but a gap in 1, you wouldn't proceed? I ask because one instructor told me to wait for both lanes to be clear, and on told me it's ok to enter into lane 1 if there's only traffic in lane 2. thanks

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  Před 6 lety +2

      When waiting a couple of points:
      1. If cars in left lane move to right, they are probably making the lane free for you to enter.
      2. If cars are in the right lane already, then I would not enter, because they could at any moment move across to the left lane, I would give way to them.

    • @carina914
      @carina914 Před 6 lety +1

      hi travis yes i was referring to a situation where traffic is already in the right hand lane, and the left lane is clear. and entering the road from a give way junction (no slip road) . so better to wait until both lanes clear in this instance? thanks

    Hi I passed my driving test in 2018 although it’s been a long time since I’m driving. I have a question pls about dual carriage ways. There’s a 50 speed limit on a dual carriageway and you get two other people in a way who join you what should be my speed limit? Most of the times I face the cars try to go parallel undead of speeding up. If I can slow down I do if there are vehicles behind me and not ready to slow down what should I do? Is there anything I’m doing wrong? Pls respond

      At 4:32 you took second exit to join A5 but if we want to go primark traffic lights which lane you should because right lane goes straight and middle goes left and straight which says arrow on ground

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  Před 4 lety

      Coming up the slip road and primark is on your left at the first exit. Your choice is the left lane first, but if there is a very long traffic jam then you could also use the middle lane to turn because the white arrows on ground allow you to, this would exit in the right lane.
      If you were coming from the right across the roundabout towards primark to take the second exit, as you approach the second exit you could also be in the right lane for it’s a dual exit, but if you get the chance to move across to left, take it.

      @JamesTravis  Před 8 lety

      Hi, You are correct, by 50mph you should be in 5th gear. If you wanted to reduce your speed from 50 mph to 30 mph then you would properly go down from 5th to 4th, or even down to 3rd. The size of the engine can be the difference between 4th and 3rd gear changing.

    • @shawnrahoon6789
      @shawnrahoon6789 Před 5 lety +1

      It's also if not more dangerous to make 4 or even 6 lane changes if you have a hogger in lanes 2 or 3. If all those in lanes 1,2 and 3 having to merge into 4 to pass a hogger it would lead to risk taking by slotting into gaps with in turn would cause tailgating. The only way to educate hoggers that they are committing a offence is to pass them on inside. It might also help if driving instructors putting videos on CZcams would clarify to it's viewers that undertaking is NOT illegal and if a collision was to occur due to the hogger changing lanes without mirror checking then it is the hogger is 100% at fault.

    Nice informative videos, but not too sure about the Americanism creeping in, ie acceleration lane! I believe the highway code and the theory test uses the usual term 'slip rd'. This probably still makes more sense, as acceleration lane may suggest there is no give way at the end, which often there is unless the slip rd becomes a lane. Keep up the good work
